From Tears To Tiers: Mental Health & Pbis In Schools, Jason W. Byars, Kelly Petaccio
From Tears To Tiers: Mental Health & Pbis In Schools, Jason W. Byars, Kelly Petaccio
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Students living with a mental illness are more likely to drop out of school, enter the juvenile justice system, and die by suicide. In light of recent national tragedies in schools there is a sense of urgency to develop policies and procedures for the early detection of students living with a mental illness. School systems throughout the nation are incorporating Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) into their educational network in order to improve school climate. Within the framework of PBIS are tiered behavioral supports to address the needs of students, regardless of their emotional wellness. Layering the efforts of …

A Glimpse Into The Future Of Library Research, Tina H. Buck
Illuminations
Doing research or helping others do research is part of daily life for many people in the university, a known and familiar activity. For a few people, though, the prospect of doing research or helping others to do so is part of the new life they are imagining for themselves after they earn their master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS). The author corresponded with three MLIS students currently working at the John C. Hitt Library in staff positions to learn about the future of library research through their eyes.

This study will explore the relationship between LGBTQ+ identifying students’ expectations of and experiences with allies, and their perceptions of campus climate. LGBTQ+ ally training programs and visibility of LGBTQ+ allies contribute to both campus climate and LGBTQ+ students’ perceptions of that climate, leading to more positive and healthy college experiences. However, it is not clear that current practice in training and educating allies truly reflects the needs of LGBTQ+ identifying students.
While research is available for the design and implementation of ally training programs, there is little to no research on what LGBTQ+ identifying students expect of allies, nor …

Advanced Surveillance Technologies: Privacy And Evidentiary Issues, Tina Zheng
Advanced Surveillance Technologies: Privacy And Evidentiary Issues, Tina Zheng
Cornell Law School J.D. Student Research Papers
Surveillance technology, which encompasses a large array of technologies used to observe individuals’ activities and communications, has advanced at a rapid pace and is becoming more widely available in the general marketplace. This trend is potentially caused by increasing fears of terrorism following the September 11 attacks as well the ability of surveillance technology manufacturers to produce the technology at lower costs. Although surveillance technology has long been used by the military and government intelligence agencies, the use of this technology by law enforcement and now private individuals in areas not of national security concern is new and raises privacy …

Dominican Scholar Milestone: 100,000 Downloads In Calendar Year, Sarah Gardner, Dave Albee
Press Releases
Since Thanksgiving of 2015, research by Dominican faculty and students has been downloaded by more than 100,000 people in over 190 countries through Dominican Scholar, a free online institutional repository. Dominican Scholar was created to showcase and share the intellectual, professional, and artistic skills of Dominican faculty and students, and the depth of their knowledge in their field of study. A majority of the research papers and master’s theses are deposited by students and discovered via Google Search. Many are presented at Dominican’s annual Scholarly and Creative Works Conference in the spring.

Extracting Vibration Characteristics Of A Guitar Using Finite Element, Modal Analysis, And Digital Image Correlation Techniques, Kiran Patil, Javad Baqersad, Daniel Ludwigsen, Yaomin Dong
Physics Publications
The sound quality generated by the guitar depends on the vibration characteristics (i.e. natural frequencies and mode shapes) of this instrument. Thus, it is of particular interest to the guitar manufacturers to be able to obtain global information about the characteristics of the guitar. Traditional sensors can only measure at discrete locations. However, digital image correlation (DIC) can measure full-field data on the surface of the structure. In the current paper, a finite element (FE) model of a guitar with free boundary configurations was developed using quadratic solid elements. An eigensolution was performed on the FE model to determine its …

T-cell receptors (TCRs) have emerged as a new class of therapeutics, most prominently for cancer where they are the key components of new cellular therapies as well as soluble biologics. Many studies have generated high affinity TCRs in order to enhance sensitivity. Recent outcomes, however, have suggested that fine manipulation of TCR binding, with an emphasis on specificity may be more valuable than large affinity increments. Structure-guided design is ideally suited for this role, and here we studied the generality of structure-guided design as applied to TCRs. We found that a previous approach, which successfully optimized the binding of a …

olid stress and tissue stiffness affect tumour growth, invasion, metastasis and treatment. Unlike stiffness, which can be precisely mapped in tumours, the measurement of solid stresses is challenging. Here, we show that 2D spatial maps of the solid stress and the resulting elastic energy in excised or in situ tumours with arbitrary shapes and a wide range of sizes can be obtained via three distinct and quantitative techniques that rely on the measurement of tissue displacement after disruption of the confining structures. Application of these methods in models of primary tumours and metastasis revealed that (i) solid stress depends on …

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARSs) are a superfamily of enzymes responsible for the faithful translation of the genetic code and have lately become a prominent target for synthetic biologists. Our large-scale analysis of >2500 prokaryotic genomes reveals the complex evolutionary history of these enzymes and their paralogs, in which horizontal gene transfer played an important role. These results show that a widespread belief in the evolutionary stability of this superfamily is misconceived. Although AlaRS, GlyRS, LeuRS, IleRS, ValRS are the most stable members of the family, GluRS, LysRS and CysRS often have paralogs, whereas AsnRS, GlnRS, PylRS and SepRS are often absent …
