The Role Of Interdisciplinary Scholarship And Research To Meet The Challenges Facing Agriculture In The 21st Century, Joshua Jay Miller Nov 2016

The Role Of Interdisciplinary Scholarship And Research To Meet The Challenges Facing Agriculture In The 21st Century, Joshua Jay Miller

Doctor of Plant Health Program: Dissertations and Student Research

Throughout human history, scientific advancements have increased our understanding of the physical world. However, as our breadth of knowledge has increased, scholarship and research have become increasingly more specialized in order to add to the body of knowledge. University structures encourage this specialization through disciplinary learning and discovery. Although this model is necessary to continue growing the body of knowledge, the complex issues facing humanity, especially in regards to agriculture, require solutions that no single discipline can provide. These issues require an interdisciplinary approach to integrate the insights across multiple disciplines. Interdisciplinarity can be achieved through collaborative processes, but these …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Dystrophic calcifications may occur in patients with J uvenile Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathy (JIIM) as well as other connective tissue and metabolic diseases, but a reliable method of measuring the volume of these calcifications has not been established. The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of low dose, limited slice, Computed Tomography (CT) to measure objectively in-situ calcification volumes in patients with JIIM over time.

METHODS: Ten JIIM patients (eight JDM, two Overlap) with calcifications were prospectively recruited over a 2-year period to undergo two limited, low dose, four-slice CT scans. Calculation of the volume of calcifications …

Stimulus Threat And Exposure Context Modulate The Effect Of Mere Exposure On Approach Behaviors, Steven G. Young, Isaiah F. Jones, Heather M. Claypool Nov 2016

Stimulus Threat And Exposure Context Modulate The Effect Of Mere Exposure On Approach Behaviors, Steven G. Young, Isaiah F. Jones, Heather M. Claypool

Publications and Research

Mere-exposure (ME) research has found that initially neutral objects made familiar are preferred relative to novel objects. Recent work extends these preference judgments into the behavioral domain by illustrating that mere exposure prompts approachoriented behavior toward familiar stimuli. However, no investigations have examined the effect of mere exposure on approach-oriented behavior toward threatening stimuli. The current work examines this issue and also explores how exposure context interacts with stimulus threat to influence behavioral tendencies. In two experiments participants were presented with both mere-exposed and novel stimuli and approach speed was assessed. In the first experiment, when stimulus threat was presented …

Effect Of The Butyrate Prodrug Pivaloyloxymethyl Butyrate (An9) On A Mouse Model For Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Jonathan D. Edwards, Matthew E.R. Butchbach

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an early-onset motor neuron disease that leads to loss of muscle function. Butyrate (BA)-based compounds markedly improve the survival and motor phenotype of SMA mice. In this study, we examine the protective effects of the BA prodrug pivaloyloxymethyl butyrate (AN9) on the survival of SMNΔ7 SMA mice. Oral administration of AN9 beginning at PND04 almost doubled the average lifespan of SMNΔ7 SMA mice. AN9 treatment also increased the growth rate of SMNΔ7 SMA mice when compared to vehicle-treated SMNΔ7 SMA mice. In conclusion, BA prodrugs like AN9 have ameliorative effects on SMNΔ7 SMA mice.

Brief Compression-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Video And Simulation With Homemade Mannequin Improves Cpr Skills., Gregory K Wanner, Arayel Osborne, Charlotte H. Greene Phd

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training has traditionally involved classroom-based courses or, more recently, home-based video self-instruction. These methods typically require preparation and purchase fee; which can dissuade many potential bystanders from receiving training. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching compression-only CPR to previously untrained individuals using our 6-min online CPR training video and skills practice on a homemade mannequin, reproduced by viewers with commonly available items (towel, toilet paper roll, t-shirt).

METHODS: Participants viewed the training video and practiced with the homemade mannequin. This was a parallel-design study with pre and post training evaluations of CPR skills …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher Nov 2016

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher

The Qualitative Report

The objective of the study was to examine how surface acting is used by middle managers to manage the emotional displays of executives in the health industry in Australia. The research was located within a social constructionist epistemology and the theoretical construct used to structure the study was surface acting. Data was generated through qualitative interviews with 49 middle managers. Analysis was undertaken using grounded theory and thematic analysis. The main finding was that unlike male managers, female managers took on the role of managing the emotional displays of senior staff and used surface acting as the means of doing …

From Combat Zones To The Classroom: Transitional Adjustment In Oef/Oif Student Veterans, Lorrie Kato, Jeremy D. Jinkerson, Sarah C. Holland, Henry V. Soper

The Qualitative Report

With 600,000 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom enrolled in higher education with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, recognizing and responding to their predictable adjustment issues is imperative. Existing qualitative research has identified some transitional issues encountered by small groups of veterans. Because of qualitative research’s limited generalizability, however, themes may be viewed as more generalizable when corroborated by student veterans in different regions. In order to provide an in-depth description of the themes related to the post-deployment adjustment process, the first author conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 student veterans from a Southwestern community college who were returning to …

Mural Arts: Giving A Voice To The Voiceless, Olivia Bates Nov 2016

Mural Arts: Giving A Voice To The Voiceless, Olivia Bates

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

The history of mural arts cites the use of public images in visualizing global and local challenges and triumphs. From the prehistoric cave art in Lascaux Grotttoes, France to the magnificent works of Italian Renaissance artists, murals have transformed the art world by visually conveying social values, events, and transitions of historical times. Throughout the world, artists highlight inequality, invoke change, and give a voice to the voiceless through their images. In order to determine the value and meaning of public art in global and local communities, I researched and documented murals through online and in-person visits; compiling my visual …

Self-Care Behaviors Of Women Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed Methods Study, Susan Bartos Nov 2016

Self-Care Behaviors Of Women Living With Heart Failure: A Mixed Methods Study, Susan Bartos

Doctoral Dissertations

Self-care is paramount to the successful management of heart failure. Although recent trends in heart failure have shown a decline in hospitalizations and emergency room visits, observational unit admissions related to heart failure exacerbations continue to rise (Albert, 2016). Although nearly half (47%) of the heart failure population is female women are historically under-represented in heart failure research that guide best practice recommendations (Pressler, 2016). Therefore, the primary aim of this mixed methods study was to identify differences in women who demonstrate an adequate heart failure self-care maintenance (score >70) behaviors as compared to women who score inadequately (score < 69) as measured by the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) version 6.2. Quantitative data revealed a significant, parabolic relationship between heart failure self-care maintenance and self-care confidence scores. Qualitative analysis suggested that assuming an active or passive role in heart failure self-care plays an important role in women’s heart failure self-care maintenance. Mixed methods analysis revealed high heart failure self-care confidence levels may not reflect an adequate level of heart failure self-care maintenance behaviors. Further research is required to expand on the factors that were found to both facilitate and impede heart failure self-care and to continue to improve health outcomes for women with heart failure.

Accuracy Of Patient-Specific Organ Dose Estimates Obtained Using An Automated Image Segmentation Algorithm, Taly Gilat-Schmidt, Adam S. Wang, Thomas Coradi, Benjamin Haas, Josh Star-Lack

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The overall goal of this work is to develop a rapid, accurate, and automated software tool to estimate patient-specific organ doses from computed tomography (CT) scans using simulations to generate dose maps combined with automated segmentation algorithms. This work quantified the accuracy of organ dose estimates obtained by an automated segmentation algorithm. We hypothesized that the autosegmentation algorithm is sufficiently accurate to provide organ dose estimates, since small errors delineating organ boundaries will have minimal effect when computing mean organ dose. A leave-one-out validation study of the automated algorithm was performed with 20 head-neck CT scans expertly segmented into nine …

The Role Of The Egf Receptor And Its Ligands In Differentiation And 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Toxicity, Christina M. Campion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a highly lipophilic polyaromatic hydrocarbon and a persistent environmental contaminant. In the human epidermis, TCDD causes enhanced proliferation and altered, accelerated differentiation. However, epidermal differentiation, mediated by calcium (Ca), opposes and attenuates proliferative signaling, driven by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Using a monolayer cell culture model, confluent NHEKs were treated with high Ca (1.8 mM) or TCDD (10 nM). EGFR down-regulation, signaling, and proliferation were then examined to assess the proliferative capacity of differentiating skin versus pathophysiological, TCDD-mediated differentiation. We found that while Ca and TCDD caused marked (~50% and ~30%) loss of [125I]-EGF binding, …
