Pedagogical Instruction For Beginning Male Singers Addressed Through Analysis And Application Of Stephen Foster's Song Repertoire, Jeffrey James Wienand

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis is designed to aid teachers in choosing repertoire for students, analyzing pedagogical appeal of repertoire selections, and applying them to a technical regimen. Creating a pedagogical analysis of a song prior to assigning it to a student will aid in the effectiveness of technique acquisition and application. This essay employs this strategy using seven songs of Stephen Foster and applying them to hypothetical students. These students are limited to male singers at a beginning level.

Multi-Level Predictors Of Obesity And Diet In Multi-Ethnic Populations, Tali Elfassy Nov 2016

Multi-Level Predictors Of Obesity And Diet In Multi-Ethnic Populations, Tali Elfassy

Open Access Dissertations

The obesity epidemic in the United States is a major public health issue. Poor socio-economic conditions such as poverty or living under financial stress may adversely influence health outcomes such as obesity, and often disproportionately impact ethnic minority populations. Further, individuals living in poverty are often exposed to environments that promote unhealthy diet and obesity. Such obesogenic environments are characterized by increased exposure to foods high in sodium and low in potassium which may also be independently associated with obesity. Yet these associations have not been adequately explored, especially among ethnic minority populations. The current dissertation seeks to explore: 1) …

Willson V. Black-Bird Creek Marsh Co., 25 U.S. 245 (1829): An Early Test Of The Dormant Commerce Clause, Michael P. Collins Jr. Nov 2016

Willson V. Black-Bird Creek Marsh Co., 25 U.S. 245 (1829): An Early Test Of The Dormant Commerce Clause, Michael P. Collins Jr.

Legal History Publications

In 1822, Delaware authorized the Blackbird Creek Marsh Company to bank and drain the Blackbird Creek in New Castle County. Subsequently, Thompson Wilson and others destroyed the structure built by the marsh company. The marsh company subsequently sued Mr. Wilson for the damage to its property. The parties eventually appealed their dispute to the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court held that Delaware’s authorization to bank and dam the creek did not conflict with the federal government’s exclusive authority to regulate commerce between the several states. Ultimately, the Court decided Willson in a manner inconsistent with its earlier …

Simulating The Spread Of The Common Cold, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

This modeling scenario guides students to simulate and investigate the spread of the common cold in a residence hall. An example floor plan is given, but the reader is encouraged to use a more relevant example. In groups, students run repeated simulations, collect data, derive a differential equation model, solve that equation, estimate parameter values by hand and through regression, visually evaluate the consistency of the model with their data, and present their results to the class.

Core Competencies Across The Profession, Shannon D. Jones, Beverly Murphy Nov 2016

Core Competencies Across The Profession, Shannon D. Jones, Beverly Murphy

MUSC Faculty Bookshelf

In this chapter, we explore the changing landscape of librarianship and the essential competencies needed for success in the profession. Drawing on literature and professional association frameworks, we examine how these competencies have been defined, applied, and adapted in response to technological advancements and evolving user expectations. We emphasize the increasing importance of both technical and interpersonal skills, as well as the necessity for cultural competence and lifelong learning. Additionally, this chapter addresses the gaps between theory and practice and highlights the importance of regularly reassessing competencies to ensure that librarians remain relevant, impactful, and responsive to the changing needs …

White Deaths Exceed Births In One-Third Of U.S. States, Rogelio Saenz, Kenneth M. Johnson Nov 2016

White Deaths Exceed Births In One-Third Of U.S. States, Rogelio Saenz, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Rogelio Sáenz and Kenneth Johnson report that there were more white deaths than births in seventeen states in 2014, compared to just four states in 2004. This is the highest number of states with white natural decrease (more deaths than births) in U.S. history. Several of these states are among the nation’s most populous and urbanized. The rising number of older adults, the falling number of women of childbearing age, and lower fertility rates diminished the number of white births and increased the number of white deaths. The authors conclude with a discussion of the major …

Voice Pitch Elicited Frequency Following Response In Chinese Elderlies, Shuo Wang, Jiong Hu, Ruijuan Dong, Dongxin Liu, Jing Chen, Gabriella Musacchia, Bo Liu

All Faculty Scholarship

Background: Perceptual and electrophysiological studies have found reduced speech discrimination in quiet and noisy environment, delayed neural timing, decreased neural synchrony, and decreased temporal processing ability in elderlies, even those with normal hearing. However, recent studies have also demonstrated that language experience and auditory training enhance the temporal dynamics of sound encoding in the auditory brainstem response (ABR). The purpose of this study was to explore the pitch processing ability at the brainstem level in an aging population that has a tonal language background. Method: Mandarin speaking younger (n = 12) and older (n = 12) adults were recruited for …
