Porcelain Gallbladder : Decoding The Malignant Truth, Norman O. Machado Nov 2016

Porcelain Gallbladder : Decoding The Malignant Truth, Norman O. Machado

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Gallbladder calcification, also referred to as porcelain gallbladder, has received significant attention in the medical literature due to its perceived role in increasing the risk of developing a gallbladder carcinoma. However, recent reports raise questions challenging this purported high risk. While previous studies reported a concomitant incidence of gallbladder cancer in porcelain gallbladder ranging from 7–60%, more recent analyses indicate the incidence to be much lower (6%). Based on evidence in the current literature, a prophylactic cholecystectomy is not routinely recommended for all patients with porcelain gallbladder and should be restricted to those with conventional indications, such as young patients. …

Social Interaction In Mixed-Income Developments: Relational Expectations And Emerging Reality, Mark L. Joseph Nov 2016

Social Interaction In Mixed-Income Developments: Relational Expectations And Emerging Reality, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

In many cities, public housing has come to exemplify concentrated urban poverty and the social problems associated with it. One major policy response to addressing these problems is the demolition and redevelopment of public housing complexes as mixed-income communities. Several theoretical propositions that lie behind this policy are based on assumptions about the ways in which living among higher-income residents can lead to relationships and interactions that may benefit poor people. Based on in-depth qualitative research in two mixed-income developments in Chicago, this paper explores the dynamics of social interaction in an effort to better understand the processes and factors …

Examining The Relationship Of Selected Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy And Their Praxis Scores, Doris H. Wheat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite the increasing number of motivated students enrolling into teacher education programs, teacher attrition continues to be high. Although teachers tend to perform best after five years of experience, nearly 50% of teachers entering the profession leave within the first five years. Consequently, it is important for researchers and practitioners to determine the factors that explain attrition and identify strategies that increase retention of teachers. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the impact of academic performance, licensure levels, and demographic characteristics on the self-efficacy of undergraduate pre-service teachers enrolled in a dual licensure program at a university …

Risk-Taking Behavior In Adolescence: Exploring The Roles Of Family, Peers, And School, Andrea Ladoris Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Adolescence is filled with continuous transitions and growth. Many adolescents are at-risk for involvement in risk-taking behavior due to insufficient socially supportive relationships to and within multiple social environments. Research has revealed specific contextual factors that are protective against and may even reduce various types of risk-taking behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between contextual factors and risk-taking behavior using a nationally representative sample of adolescents. Ecological theory and attachment theory were used as frameworks for viewing and understanding adolescent risk-taking behavior. Data for this study were taken from the Wave 1 and Wave 2 in-home …

The Prospective Associations Of Stress, Depression, And Social Support With Smoking Cessation And Relapse Among Low-Income Pregnant Women, April Lasha Nellum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Maternal smoking is one of the most preventable causes of adverse birth outcomes and poses substantial health risks for both the mother and child. Evidence suggests that increased stress and depression is associated with smoking behaviors, including smoking cessation and smoking relapse. However, few studies have prospectively examined these associations and no studies have examined neighborhood crime, an important stressor for many low-income women, as a predictor of smoking cessation and relapse among this population. The primary objective of this study was to examine the prospective associations between stress, depression, and pre- and postpartum smoking cessation, and postpartum relapse among …

Teacher-Leaders' Perceptions Of Principal Instructional Leadership Practices In Two Mid-South Charter High Schools, Frednardo Doryell Davis Nov 2016

Teacher-Leaders' Perceptions Of Principal Instructional Leadership Practices In Two Mid-South Charter High Schools, Frednardo Doryell Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While leadership, most importantly instructional leadership, is very important to the success of schools, it is just as important for principals to display instructional leadership behaviors. Instructional leaders are responsible for creating a shared vision, observing instructional and giving quality feedback, allocating educational resources, making decisions that are both driven by data and address the School Improvement Plan (SIP) to positively impact the instructional program, creating positive school, student and adult cultures, and nurturing adult learning and building teacher capacity (Stronge, Richard, & Catano, 2008).These things should be evident in the instructional program and displayed behaviors should be recognized by …

Global Role Of Cyclic Amp Signaling In Ph-Dependent Responses In Candida Albicans, Jeffrey M. Hollomon, Nora Grahl, Sven D. Willger, Katja Koeppen, Deborah A. Hogan Nov 2016

Global Role Of Cyclic Amp Signaling In Ph-Dependent Responses In Candida Albicans, Jeffrey M. Hollomon, Nora Grahl, Sven D. Willger, Katja Koeppen, Deborah A. Hogan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Candida albicans behaviors are affected by pH, an important environmental variable. Filamentous growth is a pH-responsive behavior, where alkaline conditions favor hyphal growth and acid conditions favor growth as yeast. We employed filamentous growth as a tool to study the impact of pH on the hyphal growth regulator Cyr1, and we report that downregulation of cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling by acidic pH contributes to the inhibition of hyphal growth in minimal medium with GlcNAc. Ras1 and Cyr1 are generally required for efficient hyphal growth, and the effects of low pH on Ras1 proteolysis and GTP binding are consistent with diminished …

5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Five-point scales have been used in treating pain, anger, anxiety and educationally for children on the Autism Spectrum. Because 5-point scales are visual and match abstract ideas with numbers, they are well-suited for use with children of all ages. They can easily be implemented in a variety of settings, including by parents at home. Participants will learn how to develop, use, and monitor 5-point scale interventions; see different case studies applications; and explore applications within an RTI/MTSS framework. Case studies for individual and class-wide intervention from grades PK – 12 will be shared.

“Pbis Teams Suggest Training For Secondary And Tertiary Prevention”, Kiarra Givhan, Kathryn Leavitt

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) uses a multi-tiered, problem-solving framework with evidence-based strategies to promote positive student outcomes (Sugai and Simonsen, 2012, p.2). The secondary (Tier 2) and tertiary (Tier 3) levels of PBIS provide support to students who are not responding to school-wide and class-wide strategies. To get a better idea of how Tiers 2 and 3 are implemented, and what could make implementation better, a qualitative study was conducted with PBIS Teams. PBIS Teams represent an integral part of implementation, and it is important to gain insight from those who play such a role.

This presentation will …

Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

I had moved to Atlanta the age of 21 in 2003 with my aunt. Though I was 21 physically, emotionally I behaved at the level of a 14-year-old. I also lacked basic social skills and maturity. While others around me often pointed it out, I could not understand what they were talking about. So my aunt often role played by showing me how I would act. That got me interested in wanting to improve my social skills.

Meanwhile I had attending various programs at the Emory Autism Center where Toni Thomas and Dr, Lauren Castriota taught the difference between what …
