Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a serious complication of continuous peritoneal dialysis (CPD) which can lead to poor vision and blindness. We report a five-year-old girl who had undergone a bilateral nephrectomy at the age of one year and was on home CPD. She was referred to the Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2013 with acute bilateral vision loss, preceded by a three-day history of poor oral intake. At presentation, the patient had severe systemic hypotension. An ophthalmological examination revealed severe bilateral visual impairment and NAION. She was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone …

Writing Scotland's Future: Speculative Fiction And The National Imagination, Timothy C. Baker Nov 2016

Writing Scotland's Future: Speculative Fiction And The National Imagination, Timothy C. Baker

Studies in Scottish Literature

Explores the fictional treatment of future Scotlands in the wake of the 2014 Referendum, through discussion of varied speculative novels or stories by Graham Dunstan, Paul Johnston, Ken Macleod, Matthew Fitt, Julie Bertagna, Momus, Andrew Crumey, A.L.Kennedy, Michael Faber, and Sarah Hall, arguing that "the relation between Scottish literature and Scottish politics is more complex than is often thought," that "rather than simply commenting on current political situations, much contemporary Scottish fiction offers a rethinking of politics entirely," and that "Scotland’s future is not, and cannot be, confined to a single narrative."

Marketing Ideas That Could Improve Adoptions And Reduce Return Rates Of Dogs In Shelters In The State Of Michigan, Bryan Klemett Nov 2016

Marketing Ideas That Could Improve Adoptions And Reduce Return Rates Of Dogs In Shelters In The State Of Michigan, Bryan Klemett

Honors Theses

Dogs have always been something that attracts people’s attention. It is hard to decide whether it is their fur, their cuteness, or their personality that makes them lovable. The area I chose to conduct my research is in marketing. Since dogs are man’s best friend, what other better way is there to do a thesis than on something so lovable? This research entails marketing ideas that could increase adoption rates while reducing return rates of animals at shelters in the State of Michigan.

I chose this topic because as it is stated earlier, I am a dog lover. I have …

Relapse Of Multiple Myeloma Presenting As Lower Lip Numbness, Yusra M. Al-Riyami, Abdulaziz Bakathir, Khalil Al-Azri, Faisal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an uncommon malignancy characterised by the proliferation of clonal plasma cells. There are few published reports describing the extramedullary presentation of MM manifesting primarily in the head and neck region. In addition, the occurrence of an isolated relapse of MM in these sites is exceedingly rare. We report a 56-year-old female who presented to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2010 with sudden-onset numbness of the lower lip. She had a history of MM in remission following chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Clinical and radiographic examinations were indicative of a possible relapse of …

Coexistence Of Autism Spectrum Disorders Among Three Children With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex : Case Reports And Review Of Literature, Amna Al-Futaisi, Ahmed Idris, Abeer Al-Mamari, Watfa S.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem neurocutaneous disorder inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and characterised by benign tumours in the brain and other vital organs such as the heart, eyes, kidneys, skin and lungs. Links between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and TSC have been postulated for many decades, with TSC considered to be one of the main syndromic causes of ASD; however, precise confirmation of a relationship between these two disorders required validated diagnostic tools. Fortunately, accurate evaluation of this relationship is now possible with standardised criteria for ASD diagnosis. We report three children who presented to the …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

A ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (RSVA) is a rare cardiac anomaly. Traditionally, RSVAs were repaired surgically; however, percutaneous transcatheter closure is the current treatment of choice. We report two cases of RSVA which were closed using this approach. The first case was a 45-year-old female who presented to the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2014 with a RSVA in the right ventricle. The second case was a 39-year-old male who was admitted to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, in 2015 with a large multifenestrated RSVA extending into the right ventricle outflow tract. Each patient underwent transcutaneous cardiac catheterisation …

Hepatitis C Screening In The Homeless Population Of Philadelphia, Adam Zimilover Nov 2016

Hepatitis C Screening In The Homeless Population Of Philadelphia, Adam Zimilover

CwiC Posters

Hepatitis C is a viral infectious disease that is a major cause of liver disease around the world. By the 1970s, it was recognized that many hepatitis cases were not due to the known hepatitis A or hepatitis B viruses. It was not until 1989 when the virus, then known as non--‐A, non--‐B hepatitis, was identified as a new distinct virus, hepatitis C. The virus has seven major genotypes, with genotype 1 causing about 75% of cases in the United States. By 1990, a screening test for the virus was developed, and within a year, the first treatment for the …

Decentralization And Health: Case Studies Of Kenya, Pakistan, And The Philippines, Christina E. Lewis, David Clarke, Jd, Maryam Bigdeli, Phd

CwiC Posters

Decentralization, defined by the World Bank (2001) as, “the transfer of authority and responsibility for public functions from the central government to intermediate and local governments or quasi-‐independent government organizations and/or the private sector,” is a movement that has gained much traction in recent history. For many countries undergoing decentralization, a major driver has been a desire to increase the role and participation of local governments in the decision-‐making space. In doing this, it is hoped to create governance structures that are more accountable and responsive to the people. For health, decentralization has been touted as a potential way to …

Public Health Considerations And The Culture Of Alcohol In Vietnam, Daniel Baquet Nov 2016

Public Health Considerations And The Culture Of Alcohol In Vietnam, Daniel Baquet

CwiC Posters

The problem of alcohol in Vietnam is interesting when considering the culture surrounding alcohol throughout the country, particularly amongst men. In 2010, Vietnamese men drank 12.1 liters of pure alcohol per capita, while women drank only 0.2 liters (WHO, 2014). The WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health stated, “Vietnam’s national drinking patterns … are among the most fatal with the highest possible score for alcohol-attributable years of life lost,” a metric which includes liver cirrhosis, road traffic crashes, and the prevalence of alcohol use disorders and alcohol dependence (WHO, 2014). In addition, domestic alcohol production in Vietnam has …

• Immediately after the Vietnam War ended in 1975, Vietnam experienced economic turmoil and famine as the roots of industrialization began to grip the nation.

• In 1986, the government declared a rapid transition from a planned to a market economy would take hold. The ensuing change caused further increased industrial development and a subsequent growth of the emerging market economy. 1

• To this day, Vietnam’s GDP is rising yearly at a rapid rate.

• For this reason, much of Vietnam has been developed in a relatively short amount of time (since the end of the war) but much …

Teaching Critical Thinking With Problem-Based Learning, Christopher Cureton Nov 2016

Teaching Critical Thinking With Problem-Based Learning, Christopher Cureton

DNP and Student Works

Critical thinking (CT) capabilities are crucial for the contemporary nurse and vital for the delivery of safe patient care. As health care and technology continue to evolve, so must the teaching methods used by educators to develop the CT abilities of nursing students. Teaching methods must be interactive, student-focused, and address the various learning needs of diverse student populations. The review of the literature found that the active teaching strategies of problem-based learning (PBL) and case studies are effective in promoting CT development in nursing students. The evidence-based teaching project proposes the use of PBL case studies as the primary …

Mclean, Richard C. Peralta, Sarah E. Null, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The aims of the original proposed project remain the same, that is, to test the hypothesis that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for stormwater harvesting is a technically feasible, socially and environmentally acceptable, economically viable, and permittable option for developing new water supplies for arid Western urban ecosystems experiencing increasing population, and climate change pressures on existing water resources. The project is being carried out via three distinct but integrated components that include: 1) Monitoring of existing distributed Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) harvesting schemes involving a growing number of demonstration Green Infrastructure (GI) test sites; 2) Integrated stormwater/vadose zone/groundwater/ ecosystem services …

Unsettled: How Climate Change Challenges A Foundation Of Our Legal System, And Adapting The Legal State, Victor B. Flatt

BYU Law Review

One of the fundamental goals of law is to end disputes. This push to “settlement” is foundational and has historically worked to increase societal efficiency and justice by engendering legitimate expectations among the citizenry. However, the efficient nature of much legal finality, settlement and repose only exists against a background of evolution of the physical environment that is predictable and slowpaced. That background no longer exists. The alteration of the physical world, and thus, the background for our societal structure and decisions, is accelerating rapidly due to human-caused climate change. This creates a mismatch between the law’s tendency to finality …

Alarm Fatigue In The Ward, J Edworthy, M Kristensen, E Ozcan

School of Psychology

This article addresses the need of including acoustical perspectives in the debate on alarm fatigue within the healthcare domain. We show how conceptualisations and proposed solutions to alarm fatigue are unequally distributed across what could be called the ‘alarm chain’: a generic model of the core structural elements and dynamic relations that constitute any alarm scenario. A focal point in the alarm chain – the ‘alarm mediation cleft’ – seems to divide the alarm fatigue literature from the segment of the alarm literature that deals with auditory alarm design. The current healthcare discourse on alarm fatigue is centred around the …
