50 Years After The War On Poverty: Successes Should Inspire The Next Bold Steps For Poor Children, Olivia Golden Dec 2016

50 Years After The War On Poverty: Successes Should Inspire The Next Bold Steps For Poor Children, Olivia Golden

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Safety net programs emerging from the War on Poverty and later antipoverty efforts such as Head Start, Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), among others have reduced poverty, and strengthened longer-term outcomes for poor children, leading to better health and greater economic success into adulthood. Unfortunately, despite the strong positive effect of these public programs, the poverty rate is still too high, particularly among America’s next generation of children and young adults. Struggling with economic insecurity is now a typical experience for America’s next generation, with the overwhelming majority of low-income households …

Circumstantial Disconnection: Homelessness And Parental Relationships With Children, Jonathan Holland, David Branham Sr. Dec 2016

Circumstantial Disconnection: Homelessness And Parental Relationships With Children, Jonathan Holland, David Branham Sr.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

This article looks at homeless individuals to see how they think their residential situation affects their relationship with their non-homeless children. Using a survey of 75 homeless parents in Houston, Texas this analysis finds that homeless parents of non-homeless children believe that their living situation has a detrimental impact on their relationship with their children. While many respondents felt that they had a good relationship with their children the chances of maintaining a good relationship were less for respondents with adult children than minor children. While a majority of respondents with children felt that finding housing stability would help their …

Task Persistence: A Potential Mediator Of The Income-Achievement Gap, Sara S. Whipple, Christine K. Genero, Gary W. Evans Dec 2016

Task Persistence: A Potential Mediator Of The Income-Achievement Gap, Sara S. Whipple, Christine K. Genero, Gary W. Evans

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background: The pervasive gap in achievement among impoverished children has been investigated primarily in terms of parental investments, specifically parent to child speech and other forms of cognitive stimulation (e.g., toys, print materials). This research extends that literature by considering the role of a non-cognitive factor, namely task persistence, in the income-achievement gap. Using task persistence as the hypothesized mediator, duration of childhood in poverty is used to predict two educational variables - perceived academic competence and educational attainment. Although bivariate relationships between each of the variables have been demonstrated in past research, a full model linking task persistence with …

Trends In Child Poverty By Race/Ethnicity: New Evidence Using An Anchored Historical Supplemental Poverty Measure, Laura Nolan, Irwin Garfinkel, Neeraj Kaushal, Jaehyun Nam, Jane Waldfogel, Christopher Wimer

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Official poverty statistics have been criticized, however, for being based on an outdated measure of poverty (Blank, 2008; Citro and Michael, 1995). First put into use in the 1960s, the official poverty measure’s (OPM) concept of needs has been updated for inflation but still reflects the living standards, family budgets, and family structures of that time. Moreover, when tallying family resources, the OPM misses key government programs such as Food Stamps and tax credits that have expanded since the 1960s. For these reasons, the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) implemented an improved “supplemental poverty measure” (SPM) …

Integrating Physiological And Reflex Biomarkers Of Fishing Capture Stress In Coastal Shark Species, Jacob M. Jerome Dec 2016

Integrating Physiological And Reflex Biomarkers Of Fishing Capture Stress In Coastal Shark Species, Jacob M. Jerome

Open Access Theses

In both commercial and recreational fisheries, many sharks are captured and released alive due to harvest regulations, the capture of non-target species, or conservation ethics. Nevertheless, released individuals may suffer post-release fitness loss or even mortality due to capture stress. Additionally, some of these species that would otherwise be intended for release are found dead upon capture. Understanding physiological and behavioral responses of sharks to capture stress is important for determining best fishing practices and for establishing effective management strategies. In this study, I investigated sub-lethal effects of capture through monitoring blood glucose, lactate, hematocrit and reflex impairment on four …

Physical Therapy And Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In A Patient With Multiple Co-Morbidities – A Case Report, Jeanine Manubay, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

Traditional physical therapy (PT) interventions can be challenging to implement in the complex patient with multiple comorbidities. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a behavioral therapy technique used to change obstructive behaviors and improve functional and emotional health. CBT has shown positive outcomes in patients with cancer and elderly patients with depression, but has not been studied in conjunction with PT in medically complex patients. The purpose of this case report was to document the utilization and outcomes of CBT along with traditional physical therapy for a medically complex patient diagnosed with end stage renal disease and multiple co-morbidities.

Physical Therapy And Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In A Patient With Multiple Co-Morbidities – A Case Report, Jeanine Manubay

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is grounded in the premise that by altering a patient’s negative thought processes, one can improve functional and emotional health. When multiple co-morbidities limit traditional physical therapy interventions, CBT may be a consideration. While CBT has shown benefits in patients with cancer and others, there is a lack of research investigating its effectiveness in conjunction with physical therapy (PT) in the medically complex patient. The purpose of this case report was to document the outcomes of CBT along with traditional PT for a medically complex patient diagnosed with end stage renal disease and …

Use Of Functional Strengthening, Balance Training, And Stretching In The Treatment Of A Patient Following A T11-L5 Spinal Fusion: A Case Report, Anna Sidloski

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Lumbar spinal fusion surgery has been utilized to manage levels of low back pain and instability. However, pain often persists post-operatively. Evidence supports the use of Transverse Abdominis recruitment in patients with LBP. Research demonstrates strengthening the hip musculature may allow for improved outcomes for those who experience LBP. There is limited research focusing on lower extremity strengthening, flexibility, and balance training in a patient following a T11-L5 spinal fusion. Case Description: The patient was a 68-year-old male presenting to physical therapy eight weeks’ status post T11-L5 spinal fusion with ~45 degrees forward-flexed posture, weak lower extremity …

Rangsutra: Creating A Social Return On Investment, Grace Matthews Dec 2016

Rangsutra: Creating A Social Return On Investment, Grace Matthews

Miller Center Fellowship

In the business world an ROI, or return on investment, measurement is used to track what financial gains investors are getting out of their investments. SROI, on the other hand, is a social return on investment. Social enterprises can report impact in many different formats. One of these formats is an SROI, which connects the financial inputs to the social outcomes by looking at specific investments and reporting social impact in a dollar value.

Although Rangsutra has been making an effort to track their social impact more efficiently and reliably, looking into an SROI would be useful to measure the …

Lgbtq+ Affirming Locations Of Greenville County, C.J. Lane

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

This project explores the LGBTQ+ Affirming Locations of Greenville county. An LGBTQ+ affirming location is best summarized by this response, “It's a comfortable and welcoming place where it doesn't only feel like LGBT+ people are just being tolerated”. This response was taken from a survey I sent out to LGBTQ+ Groups in the Greenville area and shows why it is important to identify locations in the Greenville county area. With people coming out and looking for support it is important for to know where they will not be discriminated against. The goal is to make a viewable map that can …

The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton Dec 2016

The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

Resilience to climate change serves as an indicator of the effectiveness of organic farming practices. Resilience means that an area is able to return to a stable state after a disturbance. In this context, it means that the area is able to function regularly even in the face of climate change, an instance that affects species health and biodiversity. By mapping the locations of organic farms across the southeastern United States along with the resilience scores of areas as evaluated by The Nature Conservancy and comparing this map to farm locations and biodiversity measures, we are able to determine the …

A Comprehensive Physical Therapy Program For Adult-Onset Dystonia: A Case Report, Karissa Wells, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

Dystonia can present with symptoms of involuntary muscle contractions, resting tremors, and diminished muscular control. Patients with dystonia can present similarly to patients with Parkinson’s disease due to the association with the basal ganglia. While there is significant research on physical therapy (PT) interventions for patients with Parkinson’s disease there is limited research on the PT evaluation and treatment of patients with dystonia. The purpose of this case report was to describe a comprehensive PT regimen, based on Parkinson’s disease research, for a patient diagnosed with adult-onset dystonia.

Spatial Distribution Of High Obesity Rates In South Carolina, Tom Bennett Dec 2016

Spatial Distribution Of High Obesity Rates In South Carolina, Tom Bennett

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

In 2015, the rate of adult obesity in South Carolina was nearly 32%, which places South Carolina as the 13th worst state when it comes to the prevalence of adult obesity. Along with overall rates of adult obesity, South Carolina has the 8th highest high school student obesity rate with 16.3% of high school students being obese. These statistics are troubling because obesity is a primary cause of Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other negative health effects. These health care issues then affect supply and demand for health care, advertising, physical exercise, and many other market segments, …

Soundscape Mapping: Spatial Variability Of Sound At Furman University, Alec Schindler Dec 2016

Soundscape Mapping: Spatial Variability Of Sound At Furman University, Alec Schindler

Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations

Looking at the entire soundscape and studying its spatial variability can often give us important information about the health of the ecosystem. However, most previous studies only measure sound intensity, and are therefore limited in their depiction of the soundscape. Another tool for mapping soundscapes is SPreAD-GIS. This tool models sound propagation in an area. However, previous studies have only used it to evaluate the effects of noise pollution, but not applied it towards depicting the soundscape as a whole. I mapped the soundscape of Furman University’s campus using sound intensity as well as many different soundscape indices in order …

The Nmda Receptor Glun2c Subunit Controls Cortical Excitatoryinhibitory Balance, Neuronal Oscillations And Cognitive Function, Subhash C. Gupta, Aparna Ravikrishnan, Jinxu Liu, Zhihao Mao, Ratnamala Pavuluri, Brandon G. Hillman, Pauravi J. Gandhi, Dustin J. Stairs, Ming Li, Rajesh R. Ugale, Daniel T. Monaghan, Shashank M. Dravid

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Despite strong evidence for NMDA receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction as an underlying factor for cognitive disorders, the precise roles of various NMDAR subtypes remains unknown. The GluN2Ccontaining NMDARs exhibit unique biophysical properties and expression pattern, and lower expression of GluN2C subunit has been reported in postmortem brains from schizophrenia patients. We found that loss of GluN2C subunit leads to a shift in cortical excitatory-inhibitory balance towards greater inhibition. Specifically, pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of GluN2C knockout mice have reduced mEPSC frequency and dendritic spine density and a contrasting higher frequency of mIPSCs. In addition a greater number …

The Use Of Manual Therapy In The Treatment Of A Patient With Chronic Low Back Pain And Sciatica: A Case Report, Elia N. Darazi Dec 2016

The Use Of Manual Therapy In The Treatment Of A Patient With Chronic Low Back Pain And Sciatica: A Case Report, Elia N. Darazi

Case Report Posters

Low back pain (LBP) is the second most common cause of disability in adults with total costs estimated to be between $100 and $200 billion annually on the US economy. The prevalence of chronic LBP rose significantly over a 14-year interval (1992 to 2006), from 3.9% to 10.2%. Treatment of LBP may be conservative or surgical, with conservative being the mainstream initial treatment before a consideration of a surgical option. A surgical option is usually recommended when there is evidence of worsening nerve damage. In a physical therapy (PT) outpatient setting, chronic LBP is one of the most common conditions …
