Combining Physical Therapy And Podiatry For A Patient With Plantar Fasciitis: A Case Report, Kathleen Barnes, Kirsten Buchanan Dec 2016

Combining Physical Therapy And Podiatry For A Patient With Plantar Fasciitis: A Case Report, Kathleen Barnes, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

One million cases of plantar fasciitis (PF) are reported annually in the United States. Studies have separately investigated the effectiveness of physical therapy (PT) interventions as well as steroid injections from podiatry – but not in conjunction with each other. There is a lack of research investigating an interdisciplinary approach utilizing PT and podiatry for PF. This case report investigated an interdisciplinary approach combining physical therapy and podiatry utilizing steroid injections in the treatment of a patient with plantar fasciitis.

Application Of Manual Therapy Utilizing Maitland Principles In The Rehabilitation Of A Patient Following Rotator Cuff Repair, Kehinde Aderibigbe, Brian T. Swanson Dec 2016

Application Of Manual Therapy Utilizing Maitland Principles In The Rehabilitation Of A Patient Following Rotator Cuff Repair, Kehinde Aderibigbe, Brian T. Swanson

Case Report Posters

In the United States, more than 500,000 rotator cuff repairs and shoulder arthroscopies are performed annually. Following surgery, physical therapy (PT) often utilizes various manual therapy (MT) and therapeutic exercise (TE) interventions. Post-operatively, accessory joint mobilizations (AJM) help to prevent adhesions and may decrease excitability of central nociceptive pathways. However, there is no consensus about the most appropriate postoperative utilization and timing of MT following surgery. Maitland describes a framework for clinical decision making that is patient-centric and focuses on frequent reassessment to guide the application of manual therapy. In this framework, comparable signs are identified at initial evaluation, and …

Urology Articles

Approximately 50% of prostate cancers are associated with gene fusions of the androgen-regulated gene TMPRSS2 to the oncogenic erythroblast transformation-specific (ETS) transcription factor ERG. The three-dimensional proximity of TMPRSS2 and ERG genes, in combination with DNA breaks, facilitates the formation of TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusions. However, the origins of DNA breaks that underlie gene fusion formation in prostate cancers are far from clear. We demonstrate a role for inflammation-induced oxidative stress in the formation of DNA breaks leading to recurrent TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusions. The transcriptional status and epigenetic features of the target genes influence this effect. Importantly, inflammation-induced de novo genomic …

Decision-Making In The Foster Care System, Julie E. Bertram Dec 2016

Decision-Making In The Foster Care System, Julie E. Bertram

Dissertations

This study documented and analyzed the processes of mental health treatment decision-making, in the context of family support teams, within the foster care system. The research questions explored engagement, perceptions, and self-rated empowerment among family support teams that serve adolescent foster youth with mental health concerns. The sample consisted of 23 participants from core support teams and 36 other adolescent and adult team members who were involved in the study. Data collection methods included observations at family support team meetings and court hearings, 34 semi-structured individual interviews, a self-rated empowerment scale, and informal conversations in the field. Analysis of non-survey …

The Microbiome Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791): Temporal And Spatial Variation, Environmental Influences, And Its Impact On Host Physiology, Melissa L. Pierce Dec 2016

The Microbiome Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791): Temporal And Spatial Variation, Environmental Influences, And Its Impact On Host Physiology, Melissa L. Pierce

Doctoral Dissertations

Prokaryotic communities are ubiquitous in every environment on earth. In the oceans they are integral to a number of biogeochemical processes and form the base of marine food webs. Microbes have also coevolved with eukaryotes, aiding in a variety of host functions including digestion and nutrient absorption, development of the immune system, and protection against pathogens. The disruption of these microbial communities, especially in the gut, has been linked to altered health statuses and physiological functions in a range of hosts. The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), is a valuable economic and ecological resource in near-shore environments. As a …

Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales Dec 2016

Pathways To A Brighter Future: Narratives Of Latino Students’ Perceptions At Community College, Columba Myra Gaytan-Morales

Theses and Dissertations

Helping Latino students into leadership roles begins with a college experience. Latino students are the largest and fastest growing student population within community colleges, yet they are less likely to graduate. Blame is often placed on minority students and their families for the students’ poor academic performance. Deficit thinking models have impacted this way of thinking and this adds to the variety of factors that prevent students’ from successfully completing a college degree. An analysis of nine Latino students’ college experiences was examined to determine the types of barriers that were evident. Critical Race Theory and Latino Critical Race narrative …

Examining Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 8 Teacher Practices And Perceptions Regarding Using Facebook And Twitter For Parent-Teacher Communication, Heidi L. Gruber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive, survey research was to examine pre-Kindergarten–Grade 8 teacher’s perceptions regarding their preparedness, propensity, and felt value of using Facebook and Twitter for parent–teacher communication. The 38 participants completed the Teacher Presurvey, followed by an online instructional intervention, which was proven effective in showing teachers how to use Facebook and Twitter for parent–teacher communication, through Teacher Postsurvey data. Data from the Teacher Presurvey and Postsurvey were used to examine three research questions. In the study, the researcher also investigated teacher perceptions of the benefits of using social media, and solicited what they perceived to be …

Mold In Residences And The Associated Respiratory Diseases/Symptoms Among Occupants, Bhavin Vinod Chauhan Dec 2016

Mold In Residences And The Associated Respiratory Diseases/Symptoms Among Occupants, Bhavin Vinod Chauhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Indoor mold may cause asthma and other respiratory symptoms; however, no study has been conducted in homes in Memphis. This study aims to monitor indoor mold exposure and explore its relationship to respiratory symptoms/illnesses. Environmental monitoring was conducted in 15 homes (9 with visible mold and 6 without) in Shelby County. Indoor environmental samples included ground and air vent dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), real-time particulate matter (PM), CO2, relative humidity (RH), and temperature. In laboratory, mold in dust samples were analyzed using an Endpoint PCR and VOCs on a thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) system. No association was found …

Effects Of 17 Β-Estradiol And Progesterone On Acropora Cervicornis And Porites Astreoides Growth And Reproduction, Joshua L. Stocker

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Reef-building coral populations throughout the world are being threatened by numerous stressors and continue to decline. As potent endocrine-disrupting compounds, exogenous sex steroid contamination has been a largely overlooked stressor to corals. Previous research indicates these compounds are prevalent in marine environments, fluctuate annually along with reproductive cycles, can bioaccumulate, and have had variable effects on growth and reproduction in several cnidarian species. This project had three primary objectives: (1) establish environmental estradiol and progesterone concentrations in Broward County and lower Florida Keys reef environments, (2) conduct 17 β-estradiol and progesterone larval assays on P. astreoides larvae to determine the …
