An Examination Of The Neural Unreliability Thesis Of Autism, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Gizely Andrade, John J. Foxe
An Examination Of The Neural Unreliability Thesis Of Autism, John Butler, Sophie Molholm, Gizely Andrade, John J. Foxe
Articles
An emerging neuropathological theory of Autism, referred to here as “the neural unreliability thesis,” proposes greater variability in moment-to-moment cortical representation of environmental events, such that the system shows general instability in its impulse response function. Leading evidence for this thesis derives from functional neuroimaging, a methodology ill-suited for detailed assessment of sensory transmission dynamics occurring at the millisecond scale. Electrophysiological assessments of this thesis, however, are sparse and unconvincing. We conducted detailed examination of visual and somatosensory evoked activity using high-density electrical mapping in individuals with autism (N = 20) and precisely matched neurotypical controls (N = 20), recording …

Building A Knowledge Economy: Are Hungary’S Educational Reforms The Right Approach?, Jörg Dötsch
Building A Knowledge Economy: Are Hungary’S Educational Reforms The Right Approach?, Jörg Dötsch
Economic and Business Review
Technology and global connectivity are leading to accelerating dynamics of the global economy. One of the underlying driving forces is the increasing importance of immaterial resources. This has exhaustively discussed under keywords such as “knowledge economy” or the increase of “knowledge intensity”. The following paper discusses the appropriateness of the youngest reforms in Hungary’s higher education system against the background of a modern knowledge economy. It focuses on higher education and presents preconditions, goals and the institutional framework of a “dual approach”. It briefly treats the current situation in Hungary regarding key aspects of its competitiveness and summarizes the actual …

Teaching Problem Solving And Critical Thinking Skills In An Inclusion Classroom, Bethany C. Miele
Teaching Problem Solving And Critical Thinking Skills In An Inclusion Classroom, Bethany C. Miele
Senior Honors Theses
Teaching critical thinking and problem solving skills in any classroom is crucial to the success of the students in that classroom. Students need to learn these skills at an early age to be academically and professionally successful in the future. In an inclusion classroom, these skills are even more important for the academic future of every general and special education student. First, teachers must understand the definition of problem solving and critical thinking skills and what these skills look like in an elementary classroom. Then, teachers need to learn different strategies to teach both of these crucial skills in a …
An Analysis Of The Application Of Project Management In Different Ministry Models, Ryan L. Flora
An Analysis Of The Application Of Project Management In Different Ministry Models, Ryan L. Flora
Senior Honors Theses
Project management provides guidelines for the implementation of systems to make processes more effective and efficient. One emerging field in which project management application benefits are being discovered is ministry and nonprofits, specifically Christian ministry. Although there are many different denominations in Christianity, they can all essentially be separated into two categories: Seeker Oriented Ministries, and Traditional Ministries. This thesis will attempt to provide a synopsis of the applications of project management in both ministry types, as well as a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between the two styles.
Retelling Inspired Stories: An Overview Of Preaching Biblical Narrative, Michael L. Frye
Retelling Inspired Stories: An Overview Of Preaching Biblical Narrative, Michael L. Frye
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis serves as an overview of preaching narrative passages of Scripture. The stories in the Bible are powerful and impacting when preached properly. Expositional preaching is the most effective model from which to preach narrative because exposition respects the nature and form of narrative as a genre of literature. The interpretation of narratives must be approached in a unique way to accommodate the literary elements and plot development of each story. Once the big idea of a biblical story has been discovered, the preacher must present the passage in narrative form, contrasting a traditional sermon outline of several points. …

The Role Of Diverse Strategies In The Sustainability Of Online Communities, Lingfei Wu, Jacopo A. Baggio, Marco A. Janssen
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
Online communities are becoming increasingly important as platforms for large-scale human cooperation. These communities allow users seeking and sharing professional skills to solve problems collaboratively. To investigate how users cooperate to complete a large number of knowledge-producing tasks, we analyze Stack Exchange, one of the largest question and answer systems in the world. We construct attention networks to model the growth of 110 communities in the Stack Exchange system and quantify individual answering strategies using the linking dynamics on attention networks. We identify two answering strategies. Strategy A aims at performing maintenance by doing simple tasks, whereas strategy B aims …

Maurice's Love, Peggy Wood
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
“By linking their love to the past he linked it to the present” (Forster 745).
E. M. Forster’s Maurice is a widely read and taught text that features homosexuality in Edwardian England. The focus of this thesis is an in-depth analysis of Maurice’s character, with a specific emphasis on the character’s coming out process. The coming out process is still a significant issue in today’s world. Hate crimes, ostracism, and many other negatives can be associated with the coming out process that is not entirely different from what Maurice Hall faced. This statement is easily supported by historical accounts and …
In Contradiction With Culture: A Study Of French Vegetarians, Robert Schumaker
In Contradiction With Culture: A Study Of French Vegetarians, Robert Schumaker
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This paper examines the relationship between modern French vegetarians and the vast French culinary tradition. Historically composed of meat, dairy, and animal by-products, French cuisine is at odds with a growing trend to become vegetarian or vegan, a movement which embraces greener and more compassionate ethics. The research is divided into three sections: animal rights, ecology, and personal health, these being the most popular reasons one adopts a vegetarian or vegan diet. In each category, the French tradition is contrasted with the behaviors and thoughts of French vegans or vegetarians. The purpose of this project is to highlight how French …

From Love Canal To The Flint Water Crisis: Government, Public Opinion, And Environmental Crises, Sarah Hughey
Honors Theses
After the rise of the modern-day environmental movement, environmentalism in the United States focused more and more on issues and crises related to the areas in which people lived and to the aspects that impacted public health. In particular, the crisis at Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York during the late 1970s and early 1980s provided a starting point to the awareness and activism of modern environmental history. Recently, an environmental crisis related to drinking water occurred in Flint, Michigan in the mid-2010s that showcases how various aspects of the environmental movement have developed over time since the Love …
Retinal Ganglion Cell Neuroprotection Induced By Neuropharmacological Agents In An In-Vivo Model Of Glaucoma, Quinn Ameel
Retinal Ganglion Cell Neuroprotection Induced By Neuropharmacological Agents In An In-Vivo Model Of Glaucoma, Quinn Ameel
Honors Theses
Recent discoveries from this lab have demonstrated that activation of alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChRs) on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in the retina is linked to neuroprotection of RGCs that are typically lost in glaucoma-like conditions. Various chemical agents have been produced to increase overall neurotransmission of ACh from cholinergic neurons. DMP-543 is an agent that increases calcium release from cholinergic synaptic terminals. Donepezil is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that inhibits the breakdown of ACh in the synaptic cleft, prolonging ACh’s effect. In this study, the neuroprotective activity of these two agents was analyzed at the synapse between starburst amacrine …
Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Master's Projects and Capstones
Asthma is the most common pediatric condition in the United States, and a child's home environment plays an impactful role in the triggering of asthma exacerbations (Harper et al., 2015). Current emergency department (ED) ideology focuses on symptoms management, with little time spent on education, and virtually no attention paid to the home environment. Evidence shows that programs which incorporate home environmental assessments into asthma patient education produce a reduction in annual ED visits, fewer missed school days, decreased use of rescue medications, and improvements in quality of life (Gruber K.J., et al, 2016, Hollenbach J.P. & Cloutier M.M., 2015, …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
A review of the effects of generational poverty on the development of children and the well-being of their families is compared with nine years of experience by Generation One, a non-profit organization that operates a school and a revitalization program in the Third Ward of Houston, Texas. Analysis of student behavior and the level and quality of parent involvement points to the children’s lack of self-control (tantrums, disruptions, etc.) and their parents’ limited engagement in school or the community as the key barriers to their learning. In the research of brain/cognitive, language/literacy, personal-social, emotional, and physical development, as well as …

In 1997, Samsung received an $80 million tax abatement to build a plant in Austin, Texas amid the promise of “high paying jobs.” People were excited about the company coming to town and there was great buzz, but then they learned that most of the jobs would pay minimum wage. At a meeting of non-profits gathered to learn more about the Samsung jobs and to help them recruit, the company said that they also needed $1 million to train an advance group of 100 workers for six weeks. In addition to forgoing $80 million in tax revenue that this growing …

Perceptions Of Effectiveness Of School Counselors With Former Graduates In A Trio College Program, Marguerite Ohrtman Dr., Sarah Cronin, Erik Torgerson, Marin Thuen, Emily Colton
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The context and variables that affect at-risk students are constantly changing. It is imperative that school counselors understand the risk factors for students and the cultural and social contexts the individual lives within. Working with at-risk students is even more challenging with the millennial generation. The culture in this generation promotes instant gratification as society has reinforced that all individuals will succeed. At-risk students in this generation can be in disbelief of even being at-risk and may assume that others will solve their problems. Federally funded TRIO programs have shown to a positive impact on at-risk student development. Although there …
