The Relationship Between Invasive Annual Grasses And Biological Soil Crust Across Eastern Washington, Jarrett B. Cellini
The Relationship Between Invasive Annual Grasses And Biological Soil Crust Across Eastern Washington, Jarrett B. Cellini
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Invasive annual grasses cause ecological and economic damage across the western US and are a focal point in restoration and management plans. Managing invasion resistance of natural areas is critical to maintaining their biodiversity and function. Climate change is expected to shift species interactions, including invasive annual grasses, and may alter invasion resistance. One component of invasion resistance is biological soil crust (biocrust), which has been shown to limit Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) in arid regions. However, biocrust has been less studied in semiarid regions and its effects on other invasive annual grasses, such as Ventenata dubia, have never been studied. …

What’S Art Got To Do With It?: A Rebellious Lawyer Mindset In Transactional Practice, Patience A. Crowder
What’S Art Got To Do With It?: A Rebellious Lawyer Mindset In Transactional Practice, Patience A. Crowder
Scholarly Works
The geography and demographics of poverty have changed significantly over the last 20 years to trigger a national conversation about race and class and inequality. This conversation compels the need to examine anew the pervasiveness of race and class discrimination- in both traditionally obvious and nonobvious settings. Calling on rebellious lawyering principles, this Article recognizes that the comprehensive examination of questions of inequality requires the consideration and exploration of remedies that extend beyond the realm of litigation to contemplate transactional advocacy in the public interest-and presents a rebellious lawyer mindset in transactional practice.
Economic Inequality And College Admissions Policies, David Orentlicher
Economic Inequality And College Admissions Policies, David Orentlicher
Scholarly Works
As economic inequality in the United States has reached unprecedented heights, reformers have focused considerable attention on changes in the law that would provide for greater equality in wealth among Americans. No doubt, much benefit would result from more equitable tax policies, fairer workplace regulation, and more generous spending policies.
But there may be even more to gain by revising college admissions policies. Admissions policies at the Ivy League and other elite American colleges do much to exacerbate the problem of economic inequality. Accordingly, reforming those policies may represent the most effective strategy for restoring a reasonable degree of economic …
The Use Of Remote Sensing Technologies And Models To Study Pollutants In Pdn Region, Suhail Mahmud
The Use Of Remote Sensing Technologies And Models To Study Pollutants In Pdn Region, Suhail Mahmud
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Using a suite of modeling techniques and instrumentation we study the atmospheric pollutants in the PdN Region. The first objective of this work was to measure hemi-spherically integrated, spectrally resolved solar photon flux (actinic flux) between the wavelengths 300 and 700 nm, and use the measured actinic flux to improve air quality simulations. Actinic flux was measured in the PdN region in order to calculate photolysis rate coefficients for different pollutants. The improved photolysis rate coefficients were then integrated into a photochemical air quality model (CAMx) in order to improve air quality forecasting. We present the simulations performed for a …
Privacy As An Atmosphere Of Freedom, Andrew Faris
Privacy As An Atmosphere Of Freedom, Andrew Faris
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
One of the great challenges of liberal society is determining the balance between the interests of society and individual freedom. Courts often have a difficult choice between conflicting interests like privacy and freedom of speech. When this happens, it is important that courts do not overlook one of these vital interests in favor of another that may be equally important but less understood. The philosopher John Stuart Mill is a well-known advocate of complete freedom of speech, so much so that he has been quoted to this effect by the Supreme Court, which has valued free speech over privacy. However, …
Pan-Arabism And The United Arab Republic, Michael Habib
Pan-Arabism And The United Arab Republic, Michael Habib
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
This thesis seeks to analyze Pan-Arabism through the lens of the United Arab Republic. I argue that even though the UAR faced many internal issues, it ultimately failed due to external pressures. I argue this to provide a new perspective on the Middle East and the Arab world, by showing how it came to be as it is. I organize my thesis into four chapters: I. Introduction: Arab Unity and its Limits, II. The Marriage of Syria and Egypt, III. The UAR and the Cold War IV. The Collapse of the United Arab Republic. I analyze the factors that brought …

The Fishery And Ecology Of Cittarium Pica In The West Indies, Reuban James-Allen Macfarlan
The Fishery And Ecology Of Cittarium Pica In The West Indies, Reuban James-Allen Macfarlan
Open Access Dissertations
Cittarium pica, the West Indian Top Shell or “whelk,” is an understudied but culturally and ecologically important intertidal gastropod in the Caribbean. The species faces overexploitation and possible extirpation in much of its range due to a confluence of factors including life-history traits, a diffuse artisanal fishery, and lack of basic scientific knowledge. The undocumented, unregulated, and unreported nature of artisanal and small-scale commercial harvesting of this species renders its study quite different from that of other more recognizable species such as conch or spiny lobster. Here I have compiled four manuscripts that address specific questions related to the …

Designing Policies To Spur Economic Growth: How Regional Scientists Can Contribute To Future Policy Development And Evaluation, Carlianne Patrick, Amanda Ross, Heather Stephens
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Policymakers at all levels of government try to design policies to promote economic growth. Many of these policies have a goal of attracting new businesses to an area, as new businesses are considered a key driver of local economic growth. An emerging literature suggests that such policies have heterogeneous effects on economic growth, both in terms of how the effect of the same policy may vary across locations as well as how different policies spur different types of growth. In this chapter, we discuss the insights provided by the existing literature on the effect of government policy on local economic …
Voting Behavior On Carbon Pollution From Power Plants, Joshua C. Hall, Elham Erfanian, Caleb Stair
Voting Behavior On Carbon Pollution From Power Plants, Joshua C. Hall, Elham Erfanian, Caleb Stair
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Environmental regulation is a polarizing issue. In 2014, a bill came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives that would limit the powers of the Environmental Protection Agency. This empirical note identifies the characteristics that influenced the voting behavior of House Representatives on this bill. Political party, educational background, the location quotient of the mining industry in the representative’s state, and the amount of emissions in the Representative’s state are considered. A member’s political party is the primary factor influencing voting behavior but the location quotient of the mining industry also plays an important role.

Can Liberalization Of Local Food Marketing Channels Influence Local Economies? A Case Study Of West Virginia’S Craft Beer Distribution Laws, Trey Malone, Joshua C. Hall
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Over the past decade, local food systems have been identified as having a significant influence on regional economies. Using a recent change in West Virginia’s craft beer distribution laws as a case study, we show that although employment might not experience a statistically significant change due to additional legalized marketing channels, wages did experience a significant increase. Our findings suggest that state economies might benefit from reducing restrictions on small, local producers.
Comparing The Quality Of End Of Life Cancer Care In The Medicare Population Prior To And After The Enactment Of The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement And Modernization Act Of 2003, Rene Jooste
All ETDs from UAB
Reimbursement for chemotherapy could account for two thirds of the income for oncologists in private practice. The Medicare prescription drug improvement and modernization act of 2003 (MMA) brought about a dramatic change in the way physicians were reimbursed for delivering chemotherapy in an attempt to slow the skyrocketing costs of drugs and Medicare costs for covering these drugs . The MMA reduced Medicare reimbursements for covered outpatient prescription drugs from 95% to 85% of the average wholesale price. In 2005, a new payment system was instituted that reimbursed fee-for-service providers for drugs at the national average sales price plus 6%. …

Root Knot Nematodes (Meloidogyne Incognita) Interaction With Selected Asteraceae Plants And Their Potential Use For Nematode Management, Sydney Mwamba
All Master’s Theses
The southern root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is one of the highly polyphagous species of many cultivated plants. The losses associated with RKNs in small holder vegetable farms are not quantified but may range between 30-100% in tropical and subtropics. Application of broad spectrum nematicides is the common method of control and are to be highly toxic to humans and pollute the environment, hence the need for safer alternatives for small scale crop production systems. Biological control especially the use repellent plants is an environmentally safe option. Plants from the Asteraceae family have phytotoxic for nematode management. Investigations were conducted …
Branding Taxation, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine
Branding Taxation, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine
Articles
Branding is important not only to businesses, but also to the economy. The intellectual property laws and tax laws should thus further the legitimate goals of encouraging and protecting brand investments while maintaining a sound tax base. Intellectual property protections for branding depend on advertisement and enforcement, both of which demand significant amounts of private investment by firms. Although one would expect similar tax treatments of both categories of investment, the categories are actually treated as vastly different for federal income tax purposes. Additionally, tax distinctions also exist within each category. The result is that some branding investments are expensed and …
Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski
Creative Capitalism And Human Trafficking: A Business Approach To Eliminate Forced Labor And Human Trafficking From Global Supply Chains, Dana Raigrodski
Articles
A great amount of revenue generated by businesses in the global economy can be linked to the trafficking and enslavement of human beings. Yet, the current discourse on human trafficking fails to recognize the magnitude of benefit consumers, businesses, and economies gain from the work of forced and trafficked labor. Moreover, the limited efforts that seek to address this situation have focused on ways to encourage businesses to voluntarily adopt more socially responsible practices. These measures have had only limited success, and are generally believed to be in tension with the for-profit purposes of businesses.
Hence, the task of convincing …
Sovereignty And Subsistence: Native Self-Government And Rights To Hunt, Fish, And Gather After Ansca, Robert T. Anderson
Sovereignty And Subsistence: Native Self-Government And Rights To Hunt, Fish, And Gather After Ansca, Robert T. Anderson
Articles
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) was passed in 1971 to extinguish aboriginal rights of Alaska Natives and provide compensation for those rights extinguished. Instead of vesting assets (land and money) in tribal governments, Congress required the formation of Alaska Native corporations to receive and hold these assets. A major flaw in the settlement was the failure to provide statutory protections for the aboriginal hunting, fishing, and gathering rights extinguished by ANCSA. Moreover, while ANCSA did not directly address Alaska Native tribal status or jurisdiction, the Supreme Court interpreted the Act to terminate the Indian country status of ANCSA …

Quantifying The Impact Of Human Visitation In Two Cave Chambers On Mona Island (Puerto Rico): Implications For Archaeological Site Conservation, R. M. Vieten, A. Winter, Alice V.M. Samson
KIP Articles
Recent archaeological research has discovered well preserved historic and pre-Columbian art covering numerous walls inside caves on Mona Island. Human visits can pose a serious threat to the long term conservation of these fragile engravings and paintings by increasing condensation corrosion rates. The quantification of environmental changes to caves related to human visitation is relevant for prediction of condensation corrosion processes and cave site management policies. This study addresses the threat of increased condensation corrosion to cave art. Data collected in two caves show changes in cave air temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) caused by …

Regional Political Power In Florida, Bradley J. Caouette
Regional Political Power In Florida, Bradley J. Caouette
Honors Undergraduate Theses
According to well-known political science professors in Florida universities, the only constitutional mandate to which the Florida Legislature must adhere is to pass a balanced budget (MacManus, Jewett, Bonanza, & Dye, 2015, p. 184). The process begins with each of Florida’s state agencies crafting their individual budgets almost as soon as the new budget year takes effect (July 1). These budgets are submitted to the Governor’s office where they are reviewed by staff and then ultimately submitted to the legislature (p. 243). During the budget process, legislators are careful to ensure that they procure state dollars, oftentimes referred to as …
