The Effect Of Entrepreneurial Orientation On Smes Growth And Export In Israeli Peripheral Regions, Yanay Farja, Eli Gimmon, Zeevik Greenberg Jan 2016

The Effect Of Entrepreneurial Orientation On Smes Growth And Export In Israeli Peripheral Regions, Yanay Farja, Eli Gimmon, Zeevik Greenberg

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This research explores the influence of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on SMEs located at core and peripheral regions, by focusing on a single dimension of EO: proactiveness. We conducted a quantitative study of 626 Israeli SMEs. Business growth, as measured by the rate of change in number of employees, was found to be significantly higher in the core region. As expected, proactiveness was found to strongly affect SME growth as well as firm expansion to international markets. Our analysis shows that the difference in business growth between regions can be attributed also to a lower level of owners’ proactiveness in peripheral …

A Morphometric Analysis Of Arceuthobium Campylopodum And Arceuthobium Divaricatum (Viscaceae), Robert L. Mathiasen, Shawn C. Kenaley, Carolyn M. Daugherty Jan 2016

A Morphometric Analysis Of Arceuthobium Campylopodum And Arceuthobium Divaricatum (Viscaceae), Robert L. Mathiasen, Shawn C. Kenaley, Carolyn M. Daugherty

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Although the classification of pinyon dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium divaricatum, Viscaceae) has not been controversial to any extent since Engelmann described it in 1878, a recent taxonomic treatment has included this species in western dwarf mistletoe (A. campylopodum). While pinyon dwarf mistletoe is only known to parasitize pinyon pines (Pinus subsection Cembroides), western dwarf mistletoe as it has been known since the late 1800s is a principal parasite of Pinus ponderosa and P. jeffreyi and has never been observed parasitizing pinyon pines. With reservations about the recent classification of pinyon dwarf mistletoe and its treatment …

Coal Geology: The Origin Of Coal, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

Coal Geology: The Origin Of Coal, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

Coal forms from the tissues of plants with the major contributor being the woody tissues, cellulose and lignin, from trees growing in fresh-water wetlands. Land plants first evolved during the early Devonian and by the end of the period had adapted to most terrestrial environments. Beginning in early Pennsylvanian time, vast portions of the eastern portion of Laurentia were covered with coal-forming swamps and bogs, environments that were to be repeated throughout the remainder of the Paleozoic Era and again in the Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary Periods. It was during these times that the combination of climatic conditions and wetland …

A Geology Field Trip, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

A Geology Field Trip, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

oduction to Field Trip I had several objectives in mind when I prepared this field trip. I want to develop in you an interest, an understanding, and an appreciation of geology of the region. I want to show you differences between three of the basic physiographic provinces within Appalachia, the Low Plateau, the High Plateau, and the Appalachian Mountain Section of the Valley and Ridge Province. I also want to show you the role that the kinds and structures of the underlying rocks plays in the formation of the topography of a region in order to have you better understand …

Kinds Of Volcanoes, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

Kinds Of Volcanoes, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

By definition, a volcano is a conical structure that builds around a volcanic vent. A volcanic vent is an opening from which molten rock and gases erupt. According to the definition, there is no size requirement. There are volcanoes that you can span with your legs while on the other hand, there is Mt. Fiji.

The West Virginia's Valley And Ridge Physiographic Province: An Overly Simplistic Introduction, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The West Virginia's Valley And Ridge Physiographic Province: An Overly Simplistic Introduction, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

Anyone who has driven across West Virginia has noticed major changes in the lay of the land. In the western portion of the State the landscape belongs to the Appalachian Plateaus Physiographic Province. But what constitutes a plateau? According to the Glossary of Geology, a plateau is a dissected (stream carved) upland underlain by horizontal strata. In the case of the Appalachian Plateau, it is a relatively flat to gently rolling surface with an average elevation of about 900 feet underlain by gently folded to flat-lying sedimentary rocks. But what is a physiographic province? Again, according to the Glossary of …

Earth's Place In Space, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

Earth's Place In Space, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

I've always thought that a story should start at the beginning. Since this book is the story of Earth, we will start at the beginning. According to the astronomers, in the beginning, there was no need for geology because there were no minerals or rocks; there was no Earth; there was no Sun; there were no stars or planets. According to the astronomers, there was a time when even our present universe didn't exist. In the 1920s, the Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaitre hypothesized that everything presently contained within the entire Universe was once compressed into in a sphere he called …

The Pennsylvanian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Pennsylvanian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

In many respects, the mountain building of the Acadian Orogeny never really came to an end. Following the collision of Avalonia with the eastern margin of Laurasia with the subsequent creation of the Acadian Highlands, Gondwana and South America, now joined together into a single continent, were approaching from the east and south respectively. Even before the continent-continent collision that would occur at the close of Permian time, the highlands of Acadia along the eastern margin of Laurasia and Llanoria along the southern margin were being maintained as uplands in response to the compressional forces generated by the converging continents. …

The Ordovician Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Ordovician Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

The Ordovician Period extends in time from 505 million years ago until 438 million years ago. You will remember from our discussions of the Cambrian that the Ordovician Period of time and the Ordovician System ofrocks was suggested by Professor Lapworth as a means of solving the dilemma presented by Murchison and Sedgewick as to the "ownership" of a section of rock that both claimed when Murchison wanted to include the upper portion of Sedgewick's Cambrian System as the lower portion of his Silurian System. Sedgewick, you will remember, responded by demanding that the lower portion of his Silurina System …

The Jurassic Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Jurassic Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

During the Jurassic Period, Europe was covered by a shallow sea in which a rich fauna was encapsulated in sequences of limestones and shales. These Jurassic rocks were the training ground for many of the early geologists as they began to formulate some of the basic precepts of geology. Foremost amongst these was William Smith (1769-1839) who was the first to discover how to use fossils to correlate between separated outcrops. He gained his knowledge and understanding of fossils in his profession of a surveyor and in the building of canals throughout southern England where the canals were cut into …

Oceans And Shorelines, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

Oceans And Shorelines, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

Until 1872 when H.M.S, Challenger, a British warship converted for research, made its historic voyage, relatively little was known about the oceans. The voyage, funded by the British government, was mandated to chart the depth of the ocean, measure the various ocean currents, amass data on the composition of the ocean's water and bottom sediments, and collect information on ocean life. At the time of the voyage, except for a few soundings, almost nothing was known about the ocean bottom. Most scientists of the day had considered the vast expanses of the deep ocean basins to be nothing more than …

Sarawak Chinese Literature In Taiwan Or Local Sarawak Chinese Literature: A Perspective From Regional Experience Towards Rainforest Writing, S.L. Chai Jan 2016

Sarawak Chinese Literature In Taiwan Or Local Sarawak Chinese Literature: A Perspective From Regional Experience Towards Rainforest Writing, S.L. Chai

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The concept of 'Sinophone literature' reminds us that in this new century, the ideology of literary history is no longer stringent, as a result, the geographical view of literature should be changed accordingly as well. When we agree that Sarawak Chinese literature does not belong to Mahua literature, can we then classify all Sarawak Chinese literature into one category? This is the main argument of the paper. This paper consists of three parts. The first part discusses what does the strengthening of indigenous Sarawak Chinese literature mean based on the characteristics of the island of Borneo. The second part divides …

Tapping The Power Of Analogy: From Geographer To Quality Management Strategist, A.G. Fauza Jan 2016

Tapping The Power Of Analogy: From Geographer To Quality Management Strategist, A.G. Fauza

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Setting up and institutionalizing a quality framework alongside a quality management system in a higher education institution is an enormous challenge. This is not only due to the fact that quality assurance is a contested concept in higher education but also due to the acute lack of experts and human resources required of such an exercise. Often time universities have to resort to the academicians and academic leadership as strategic thinkers for this purpose. The University of Malaya (UM) is of no exception. From the very initial stage, UM has relied on academicians in the development of the quality management …

The Direction His Eyes Are Facing: An American Geography, Amelia R. Gramling Jan 2016

The Direction His Eyes Are Facing: An American Geography, Amelia R. Gramling

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

This paper tracks the archetypical figure of the conquistador across the historical impressions and canonical depictions left in his wake since European “explorers” like Columbus sailed into an unidentified land mass five hundred years ago and ushered the New World into the Imperial age. Through diverse and disparate set of sources--from pop culture to Columbus' log books--this paper maps conquest across the mythology of the American nation, weaving school shooters manifestos in with fictionalizations of the American West in with personal interviews and memoir to complicate and challenge the American understanding of nation—our gendered mappings of power and identity then …

Effect Of Coal Fly Ash Leachate On The Bioluminescence Intensity Of Vibrio Fischeri, Shiro Ikeda, Irena Kostova, Hideaki Sekine, Yoshika Sekine Jan 2016

Effect Of Coal Fly Ash Leachate On The Bioluminescence Intensity Of Vibrio Fischeri, Shiro Ikeda, Irena Kostova, Hideaki Sekine, Yoshika Sekine

Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive

Coal fly ash is a residue of coal-fired thermoelectric power plants (TPPs) and is mostly dumped in ash ponds or landfill sites, even though it potentially contains significant amounts of water-soluble hazardous contaminants. Bioassay using the bioluminescent bacterium *Vibrio fischeri* is known to be applicable for assessing the short-term and sublethal toxicity of complex mixtures without the need for precise chemical characterization. However, this type of bioassay is potentially adversely influenced by the pH-induced protein denaturation of cells. Because coal fly ash leachates often have alkaline or acidic properties, when applying the *V. fischeri*-based bioassay to the samples, we need …

United States National Park Service: Publications

Aim: Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) experienced one of the most extensive and rapid post-glacial plant migrations in western North America. We used plant macrofossils from woodrat (Neotoma) middens to reconstruct its spread in the Central Rocky Mountains, identify other vegetation changes coinciding with P. ponderosa expansion at the same sites, and relate P. ponderosa migrational history to both its modern phylogeography and to a parallel expansion by Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma).

Location: Central Rocky Mountains, Wyoming and Montana, and Black Hills, Wyoming and South Dakota, USA.

Methods: Plant macrofossils were analysed in …

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this chapter, discussion of key socio-cultural aspects that affect learning will be considered from two complementary perspectives:

• Aspects that may help learning, especially if adequately exploited by the teacher. • Aspects that may hinder learning, especially if not adequately contrasted by the teacher.

Thirteen papers written by authors from ten countries were accepted for Theme 3. For presentation and discussion, the papers accepted for Theme 3 were divided into subgroups according to their main focus. We are aware that it is not possible to make distinct groups of papers as there are several overlaps in the classification, but …

Rape In Alaska, Caitlin Williams Jan 2016

Rape In Alaska, Caitlin Williams

Undergraduate Research Journal

The National Crime Victimization Survey shows that Alaska has the highest number of sexual assaults of all U.S. states. Rape is a paramount problem in Alaska, for Alaska triples the national average of reported rapes (at 27 per 100,000). In addition, according to the 2014 Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault’s Dashboard, only 33.5 percent of reported forcible rapes resulted in an arrest. Data indicates that Alaska has a high population of Alaska Native (or ANs) women that are assaulted by both AN men and non-AN men. This research examines the core reasons behind the high incidence of AN …

The Israelite Roots Of Atonement Terminology, T. Benjamin Spackman Jan 2016

The Israelite Roots Of Atonement Terminology, T. Benjamin Spackman

BYU Studies

When Latter-day Saints speak of atonement, they use vocabulary drawn from the scriptures, including common verbs like atone, save, and redeem, and the corresponding nouns atonement, savior, salvation, redeemer, and redemption. There are other, perhaps more vivid, words for salvific acts, such as the Book of Mormon references to being “snatched” (Mosiah 27:28–29; Alma 26:17).1 Such rare terms in scripture have not found place in LDS discourse, which tends to use the most common terms related to atonement interchangeably. While they are indeed at some level synonymous, their distinctive meanings gesture toward …

Exploring Adolescents’ Perception Of Accessibility And Its Influence On Park Use, Z. Mahdiar, M.M. Dali Jan 2016

Exploring Adolescents’ Perception Of Accessibility And Its Influence On Park Use, Z. Mahdiar, M.M. Dali

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The fundamentals of urban planning suggest that accessibility to public open spaces, particularly the parks, is supposed to contribute to the increased use of them. Accessibility is a difficult and complex concept to define and measure. Moreover, literature review shows few researches have defined the concept of accessibility from the perspectives of potential park users and its influence on individuals’ behavior. This study aims to define factors adolescents find important in perceiving whether a park is accessible and the influence of accessibility on the use of urban parks for adolescents aged 15-18. This qualitative study’s findings are based on interviews …

Geographic Information System (Gis) Modeling Approach To Determine The Fastest Delivery Routes, M. Abousaeidi, R. Fauzi, R. Muhamad Jan 2016

Geographic Information System (Gis) Modeling Approach To Determine The Fastest Delivery Routes, M. Abousaeidi, R. Fauzi, R. Muhamad

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

This study involves the adoption of the Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling approach to determine the quickest routes for fresh vegetable delivery. During transport, fresh vegetables mainly deteriorate on account of temperature and delivery time. Nonetheless, little attention has been directed to transportation issues in most areas within Kuala Lumpur. In addition, perishable food normally has a short shelf life, thus timely delivery significantly affects delivery costs. Therefore, selecting efficient routes would consequently reduce the total transportation costs. The regression model is applied in this study to determine the parameters that affect route selection with respect to the fastest delivery …
