First-Year Experience: International Students, Kaitlyn M. Gentling Jan 2016

First-Year Experience: International Students, Kaitlyn M. Gentling

Capstone Collection

International students come from various backgrounds, academic ability, English fluency, and knowledge of American and academic culture. Through a series of student surveys and interviews with both students and international education professionals, this capstone attempts to meet the need that international students are expressing at Worcester State University (WSU). One way international educators can attempt to fill this gap is through building a First-Year Experience (FYE) program that is uniquely for international students. The FYE will start as a series of workshops called International Student & Scholar Workshop Series. The workshops will cover the areas students said they were lacking …

Got Inclusion? How Inclusive Is Your Organization? Assessing Inclusion Through The Icat: Inclusion Capacity Assessment Tool For Organizational Capacity, Charlotte Taylor Westfall

Capstone Collection

Inclusion is a popular buzzword in development, but how can organizations evaluate and learn from their internal practices to better meet the needs of a more diverse population? In order for organizations to assess their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for growth, organizational development and capacity tools, if conducted in a participatory way, are essential for revealing this information through the process of evaluation and learning. In this course-linked Capstone, social inclusion and capacity assessments are thematic focuses. The paper will begin by briefly tracing the origins and context of social inclusion and then establish the definitions, reasoning and practice behind …

A Variety Of State-Level Procedures, Practices, And Policies: Arbitration In Early America Symposium, Carli N. Conklin Jan 2016

A Variety Of State-Level Procedures, Practices, And Policies: Arbitration In Early America Symposium, Carli N. Conklin

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article seeks to explore the history of arbitration more in depth by taking a close look at the historical procedures, practices, and policies of arbitration in three states: Kentucky, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Each state developed a complex system of arbitration that included multiple arbitration procedures drawn from English law. Each state had unique geographic, political, social, religious, or commercial conditions that influenced not only the development of arbitration in that state, but also arbitration practice and the policy goals surrounding its use. A closer look at arbitration in early America reveals that, rather than one history of American …

Understanding The Roots, Methods And Consequences Of Islamic Radicalization In Kosovo, Agnesa Dalipi Jan 2016

Understanding The Roots, Methods And Consequences Of Islamic Radicalization In Kosovo, Agnesa Dalipi

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis examines the root causes of the appeal of violent Islamic extremism that led to the surge of foreign fighters from Kosovo to Syria and Iraq. The subject of Islamic foreign fighter recruitment is a nascent area of research. From the analysis of the phenomenon in Kosovo, this thesis seeks to extrapolate insights that can be applied more broadly to the debate over whether the success in the Islamic State's recruitment is a result of religious or socioeconomic factors, or a combination of both. Understanding the causes will enable counterterrorist analysts and in both Kosovo and other countries to …

Varying The Variance: How New York City Can Solve Its Housing Crisis And Optimize Land Use To Serve The Public Interest, Nathan T. Boone Jan 2016

Varying The Variance: How New York City Can Solve Its Housing Crisis And Optimize Land Use To Serve The Public Interest, Nathan T. Boone

Brooklyn Law Review

As Millennials repopulate American cities and seek jobs in creative industries, housing affordability has risen to the forefront of urban policy battles. Major conflicts exist between homeowners, renters, municipal governments, and growing industries regarding the proper way to grapple with an influx of new capital, both financial and human. New York City is a prime example of this problem. Housing cost increases have exceeded income increases, leaving a large percentage of New Yorkers “rent burdened.” This note seeks to examine a likely cause of the present problem: zoning and variance systems that limit the ability of private land owners to …

Tagging The Lanham Act: Protecting Graffiti Art From Willful Infringement, Maribeth A. Smith Jan 2016

Tagging The Lanham Act: Protecting Graffiti Art From Willful Infringement, Maribeth A. Smith

Brooklyn Law Review

Graffiti has transformed over the last several decades from a sign of urban blight to a sign of artistic expression. As a result of this shift, clothing designers and other players in fashion have begun to use images of “street art” as part of their lines. This leaves graffiti artists with no way of protecting their art, especially because of the illegal nature of graffiti. This note examines current sources of law that can be used to protect artists from this infringement. Artists have unsuccessfully argued under both moral rights and copyright theories. However, copyright and moral rights analyses do …

Student-Athletes Vs. Ncaa: Preserving Amateurism In College Sports Amidst The Fight For Player Compensation, Audrey C. Sheetz Jan 2016

Student-Athletes Vs. Ncaa: Preserving Amateurism In College Sports Amidst The Fight For Player Compensation, Audrey C. Sheetz

Brooklyn Law Review

While student-athletes are the backbone of the $11 billion college sports industry, they do not currently receive any of this revenue derived from the use of their names, images, and likenesses. The National College Athletic Association’s mission is to maintain the amateur status of student-athletes. In doing so, it precludes student-athletes from receiving any type of compensation outside of the actual cost of tuition. Amateurism, as a concept, promotes the distinction between professional and student athletes, and is the crux of the NCAA’s argument for prohibiting the compensation of student-athletes. Recently, however, the controversy surrounding the amateur status of college …

A Culture For All: Servant Class Behaviour At The Swan River In The Context Of The British Empire, S Burke Jan 2016

A Culture For All: Servant Class Behaviour At The Swan River In The Context Of The British Empire, S Burke

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Tim Mazzarol’s 1978 paper ‘Tradition, Environment and the Indentured Labourer in early Western Australia’1 is one of the earliest specific works that attempted to identify the psyche of the first British colonists at Swan River and the ‘cultural baggage’—those fears, beliefs and backgrounds—they brought with them. About 80 per cent of the adult colonists to the Swan River were described by authorities as belonging to laboring and trade occupations. These might be called the servant or working classes, and are hereafter simply referred to in this paper as the servant class. Mazzarol discussed the interaction of the servant class with …

The Art Of Well-Regulated Freedom: Rousseau And Cortázar, Braden M. Goveia Jan 2016

The Art Of Well-Regulated Freedom: Rousseau And Cortázar, Braden M. Goveia

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the most influential philosophers of eighteenth-century Europe. In 1762 Rousseau published his treatise on education titled Emile. In Emile, Rousseau argues that people require an education that returns them to themselves. He demonstrates how he could take on an ordinary boy (Emile) as his pupil and experiment with the possibility of raising him into an autonomous adult, both morally and intellectually. In 1963, Julio Cortázar published Hopscotch in its original Spanish title Rayuela. Cortázar wrote Hopscotch in a way that allows the reader to decide what role, if any, the last ninety-eight …

Informational Efficiency And The Reaction To Terrorism: A Financial Perspective, Nicholas Roland Jan 2016

Informational Efficiency And The Reaction To Terrorism: A Financial Perspective, Nicholas Roland

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this study is to measure the message terror organizations hope to convey using the financial markets as a proxy of measurement to determine patterns within the marketplace and the effects on the terrorists’ ability to deliver a desired message due to the increased use of digital devices and access to instantaneous news, seen over the past decade. Using death count, geographic location, and event type, this study identified 109 attacks between 1985 and 2015 to be analyzed against 5 market indices and 5 securities. Measuring the effects within a 10-day sample window from the time of the …

Personal Agency Inspired By Hardship: Bilingual Latinas As Liberatory Educators, Amanda Morales, Gail Shroyer Jan 2016

Personal Agency Inspired By Hardship: Bilingual Latinas As Liberatory Educators, Amanda Morales, Gail Shroyer

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This qualitative multiple case study focused on eleven non-traditional, bilingual, Latinas within a teacher education program. The study explored various factors that influenced participants’ desire to pursue and ability to persist as pre-service teachers. The overarching theme identified among participant discourse was personal agency inspired by hardship. Findings indicated that, as a result of their cultural and experiential understandings, participants enacted culturally responsive teaching with their Latino/a students. Furthermore, participants demonstrated a strong sense of personal agency to improve the educational outcomes of culturally and linguistically diverse students and a desire to advocate specifically on behalf of English learner Latino/a …

Note, Establishing Rule Of Law Through Informal Justice Systems And Development Programs, Patrick Akers Jan 2016

Note, Establishing Rule Of Law Through Informal Justice Systems And Development Programs, Patrick Akers

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

Rule of law occurs when a government and its citizens are bound by and abide by the law. Rule of law has no one-size-fits-all approach, and any initiative must take into account cultural norms and how institutions and individuals are incentivized. Informal justice systems are best positioned to do this, particularly for the poor and indigenous ethnic groups. While informal justice systems are criticized for human rights violations and elite capture, among other things, some of these shortfalls are adequately addressed through existing development programs, which are most effective when subject to market forces and when they utilize participatory accountability …
