The Geology Of West Virginia, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Geology Of West Virginia, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

This is not meant to be a geology textbook but rather a discussion that will help you understand what you see around you every day or if you take a trip around the State. For example, you're on your way to work or to class or you are going shopping. Most likely, you're driving down a wide valley surrounded by hills. What do the hills look like? Why does the topography change as you go from one part of the State to another? In my opinion, of all the states that make up Appalachia, West Virginia is the most interesting …

The Cenozoic Era, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Cenozoic Era, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

It has been said that the modem world unfolded during the Cenozoic Era. It is true that every feature of the modem landscape was formed during the Cenozoic Era. The Alps and the Himalaya have literally risen from the ocean floor. The Rocky mountains have been formed, worn away and re-uplifted to their present heights. The Appalachian Mountains that had formed at the close of the Paleozoic and worn away by the end of the Triassic, were uplifted and sculpted into their present form during the Cenozoic. All the other mountains of the world were also elevated and sculpted to …

The Devonian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

The Devonian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

Until the 19th century, the rocks exposed throughout the provinces of Devonshire and Cornwall in southwestern England had long been considered to be Carboniferous in age because of their content of fossil plants. Closer investigation by Murchison and Sedgwick in 1836, however, showed that only the uppermost portion of these rocks contained fossil plants. Because the lower portion of the rock sequence was devoid of plant fossils, was highly deformed, and resembled the rocks of northwest Wales which they had recently studied, Murchison and Sedgwick assigned the rocks to the Cambrian System. However, local fossil collectors had submitted fossil corals …

Geologic History Of West Virginia, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine Jan 2016

Geologic History Of West Virginia, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine

Readings and Notes

The exposed rocks and those that underlie the surface of West Virginia record approximately 300M years of Earth history. This may sound like a very long period of time, but in reality, it only represents about 7% of the total age of Eai1h. Before we undertake a discussion of the geologic history of West Virginia, there are some basic topics we should review in order to fully appreciate what will follow. To that end, the following topics will be discussed: 1) The Origin of Earth, 2) The Response of Rocks to Stress, 3) Some Basic Characteristics of Sedimentary Rocks, 4) …

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

March 3, 2016. Ellen Wohl, Department of Geosciences, Colorado State University.

“Messy Rivers are Healthy Rivers”

Perceptions of river health are influenced by expectations regarding the appearance of a natural river, but appearance depends on geomorphic context and river history. I examine how physical complexity – messiness – influences river health, how human activities simplify rivers and compromise river health, and how we can restore complexity and ecosystem services provided by rivers.

Wohl is a Fellow of both the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union and has received many awards, including the Gladys W. Cole Memorial Award …

Social Disparities In Exposure To Point-Of-Sale Cigarette Marketing, Mohammad Siahpush, Evi A. Farazi, Jungyoon Kim, Tzeyu L. Michaud, Aaron Yoder, Ghada Soliman, Melissa Tibbits, Minh N. Nguyen, Raees A. Shaikh Jan 2016

Social Disparities In Exposure To Point-Of-Sale Cigarette Marketing, Mohammad Siahpush, Evi A. Farazi, Jungyoon Kim, Tzeyu L. Michaud, Aaron Yoder, Ghada Soliman, Melissa Tibbits, Minh N. Nguyen, Raees A. Shaikh

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

While most ecological studies have shown that higher levels of point-of-sale (POS) cigarette marketing are associated with larger proportions of residents from lower socioeconomic and minority backgrounds in neighborhoods, there are no studies that examine individual-level social disparities in exposure to POS cigarette marketing among smokers in the United States. Our aim was to examine these disparities in a Midwestern metropolitan area in the United States. We conducted a telephone survey to collect data on 999 smokers. Cigarette marketing was measured by asking respondents three questions about noticing advertisements, promotions, and displays of cigarettes within their respective neighborhoods. The questions …

PURPOSE: To assess the biometric validity and reliability of heart rate (HR) and energy expenditure (EE) recorded by the first-generation Apple Watch (42mm) and Microsoft Band during submaximal aerobic exercise on a treadmill at steady-state. METHODS: Twenty-three participants (16 males, 7 females; mean age: 22.7 +/- 3.8 years …

The Material Ethics Of Juana Manuela Gorriti’S Peregrinaciones De Una Alma Triste, Elisabeth L. Austin Jan 2016

The Material Ethics Of Juana Manuela Gorriti’S Peregrinaciones De Una Alma Triste, Elisabeth L. Austin

Decimonónica

Juana Manuela Gorriti’s novella Peregrinaciones de una alma triste (1876) opens in a most Romantic vein: Laura, the protagonist, suffers from tuberculosis and is subjected to arsenic poisoning by her doctor in an attempt to cure her.1 As her doctor prescribes “mañana doble dosis; triple, pasado mañana” (4), he declares, with the zeal of a true believer, “niña mía [. . .] desde hoy comienza usted a tomar para curarse aquello que a otros da la muerte: el arsénico. Arsénico por la mañana, arsénico en la tarde, arsénico en la noche…¡Horrible! ¿no es cierto?” (4). The lovesick Laura promptly …

The Flâneur In Paris And Mexico City: Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera’S Transnational Search For Modern Beauty, Kelly Comfort Jan 2016

The Flâneur In Paris And Mexico City: Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera’S Transnational Search For Modern Beauty, Kelly Comfort

Decimonónica

In their introductory chapter to Geomodernisms: Race, Modernism, Modernity, Laura Doyle and Laura Winkiel examine the relevance of “place, proximity, [and] position” to diverse modernist discourses and invite a “dialogue about ‘placedness’” to constitute their proposed rethinking of modernist studies (1). By breaking modernism “open” into something they call “geomodernisms,” Doyle and Winkiel advocate for “a locational approach to modernisms’ engagement with cultural and political discourses of global modernity” (3). I take up their concern with literary works that display “a self- consciousness about positionality” in the present analysis of two chronicles by Mexican modernista author Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera …

The Mapmaker’S Dilemma In Evaluating High-End Inequality, Daniel N. Shaviro Jan 2016

The Mapmaker’S Dilemma In Evaluating High-End Inequality, Daniel N. Shaviro

Faculty Articles

The last thirty years have witnessed rising income and wealth concentration among the top 0.1% of the population, leading to intense political debate regarding how, if at all, policymakers should respond. Often, this debate emphasizes the tools of public economics, and in particular optimal in-come taxation. However, while these tools can help us in evaluating the issues raised by high-end inequality, their ex-treme reductionism—which, in other settings, often offers significant analytic payoffs—here proves to have serious drawbacks. This Article addresses what we do and don’t learn from the optimal income tax literature regarding high-end inequality, and what other inputs might …

Burden Of Diarrhea In The Eastern Mediterranean Region, 1990–2013: Findings From The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2013, Ibrahim Khalil, Ali Shafqat Akanda, Et Al

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Diarrheal diseases (DD) are leading causes of disease burden, death, and disability, especially in children in low-income settings. DD can also impact a child’s potential livelihood through stunted physical growth, cognitive impairment, and other sequelae. As part of the Global Burden of Disease Study, we estimated DD burden, and the burden attributable to specific risk factors and particular etiologies, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) between 1990 and 2013. For both sexes and all ages, we calculated disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), which are the sum of years of life lost and years lived with disability. We estimate that over 125,000 …

Bakken Crude Oil And The Changing Logistics Of The American Oil Industry, Austin Rau Jan 2016

Bakken Crude Oil And The Changing Logistics Of The American Oil Industry, Austin Rau

Independent Research

The extraction of Bakken crude oil in the Williston Basin of North Dakota is transforming how petroleum is shipped. Before 2008, North American oil was carried primarily via pipeline from source regions to refineries along the Gulf Coast or to metropolitan areas close to consumers. The current pipeline system is ill-equipped to accommodate massive volumes of oil from this previously low producing region. Lack of infrastructure and high demand for “light tight oil” (LTO) led to the use of railroads as a means of moving the product to refineries across the nation. Transporting oil via rail over long distances was …

Undiagnosed Pulmonary Obstruction And Restriction And Dust Exposure: Pilot Investigations Examining The Relationship Among Agricultural Workers, Caroline E. Holsinger Jan 2016

Undiagnosed Pulmonary Obstruction And Restriction And Dust Exposure: Pilot Investigations Examining The Relationship Among Agricultural Workers, Caroline E. Holsinger

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive disease that is characterized by limited airflow.1 In the United States (U.S.) alone, COPD is the third leading cause of death.2,3 While smoking remains the strongest risk factor for COPD, 20 percent of patients who die from COPD have never smoked.5–7 The American Thoracic 3 Society showed that about 15% of COPD cases might be attributable to workplace exposure.8 Agricultural dust exposure has long been recognized as a cause of decreased respiratory function, and exposures to both forms of dust may exacerbate other important risk factors of COPD and lead to the …

Reconciling Patent Law And Traditional Knowledge: Strategies For Countries With Traditional Knowledge To Successfully Protect Their Knowledge From Abuse, Ameera Haider Jan 2016

Reconciling Patent Law And Traditional Knowledge: Strategies For Countries With Traditional Knowledge To Successfully Protect Their Knowledge From Abuse, Ameera Haider

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

Traditional knowledge is a form of innovation that does not fit neatly into Western notions of property. Underdeveloped countries with significant traditional knowledge lack property protection for their traditional knowledge and are often not compensated for the technology arising from this form of knowledge. This Note outlines the tension arising from the differing incentives that underlie patent and traditional knowledge systems, and recommends methods of reconciling those tensions. First, this Note advocates that countries develop national libraries of the knowledge embodied in their staple agricultural products. Next, countries should create statutes to establish a method by which outside parties can …

Numbers of Career and Technical Education (CTE) completers have continually dropped at the participating schools for the past five years. Five categories of placement after graduation were studied including the following: college, employment, postsecondary vocational training, military, and no placement. Archival data were gathered from postgraduate surveys conducted by high schools as required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Data were collected for graduates in 2011, 2012, and 2013 from four area high schools that …

How Many Kinds Of Birds Are There And Why Does It Matter?, George F. Barrowclough, Joel Cracraft, John Klicka, Robert M. Zink Jan 2016

How Many Kinds Of Birds Are There And Why Does It Matter?, George F. Barrowclough, Joel Cracraft, John Klicka, Robert M. Zink

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Estimates of global species diversity have varied widely, primarily based on variation in the numbers derived from different inventory methods of arthropods and other small invertebrates. Within vertebrates, current diversity metrics for fishes, amphibians, and reptiles are known to be poor estimators, whereas those for birds and mammals are often assumed to be relatively well established. We show that avian evolutionary diversity is significantly underestimated due to a taxonomic tradition not found in most other taxonomic groups. Using a sample of 200 species taken from a list of 9159 biological species determined primarily by morphological criteria, we applied a diagnostic, …

The Narrowing Of Federal Power By The American Political Capital, David Fontana Jan 2016

The Narrowing Of Federal Power By The American Political Capital, David Fontana

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Essay -- prepared for a symposium hosted by the William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal on the future of the District of Columbia -- argues that American federal power can be better understood by considering the features of the metropolitan area that houses the most important parts of the American federal government. In other American metropolitan areas and in most capital metropolitan areas elsewhere in the world, local life features multiple and diverse industries. Washington is the metropolitan area that houses the most important parts of the American federal government, and Washington is dominated by the government and …

Dynamic Governance In Theory And Application, Part I, Robert L. Glicksman, David L. Markell Jan 2016

Dynamic Governance In Theory And Application, Part I, Robert L. Glicksman, David L. Markell

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article is the first of two that grapple with a central policy challenge facing the administrative state: how to govern in times of dynamic change, when challenges, and opportunities to address them, are both shifting rapidly. The article suggests that, conceptually, process design that is likely to produce effective regulatory governance requires attention to three key distinct but interrelated variables – the actors who are or should be involved in program implementation in different capacities, the mechanisms (legal and otherwise) available to promote good governance, and the tools available to advance desired results. To demonstrate the value of the …

Gender And The Sharing Economy, Naomi Schoenbaum Jan 2016

Gender And The Sharing Economy, Naomi Schoenbaum

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

While the sharing economy has been celebrated as a flexible alternative to traditional employment for those with family responsibilities, especially women, it presents challenges for gender equality. Many of the services that are “shared” take place in the context of intimacy, which can have substantial consequences for transacting, particularly by enhancing the importance of identity of both the worker and the customer. Expanding on previous research on intimate work — a critical area that exists largely in limbo between the law of the market and the law of the family — this Article, written for the Cooper-Walsh Colloquium, explores the …

Class-Based Affirmative Action, Or The Lies That We Tell About The Insignificance Of Race, Khiara Bridges Jan 2016

Class-Based Affirmative Action, Or The Lies That We Tell About The Insignificance Of Race, Khiara Bridges

Faculty Scholarship

This Article conducts a critique of class-based affirmative action, identifying and problematizing the narrative that it tells about racial progress. The Article argues that class-based affirmative action denies that race is a significant feature of American life. It denies that individuals - and groups - continue to be advantaged and disadvantaged on account of race. It denies that there is such a thing called race privilege that materially impacts people’s worlds. Moreover, this Article suggests that at least part of the reason why class-based affirmative action has been embraced by those who oppose race-based affirmative action is precisely because it …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Climatic variables not only directly affect the interannual variability (IAV) in net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) but also indirectly drive it by changing the physiological parameters. Identifying these direct and indirect paths can reveal the underlying mechanisms of carbon (C) dynamics. In this study, we applied a path analysis using flux data from 65 sites to quantify the direct and indirect climatic effects on IAV in NEE and to evaluate the potential relationships among the climatic variables and physiological parameters that represent physiology and phenology of ecosystems. We found that the maximum photosynthetic rate was the most important factor …

Long-Term Patterns Of Air Temperatures, Daily Temperature Range, Precipitation, Grass-Reference Evapotranspiration And Aridity Index In The Usa Great Plains: Part Ii. Temporal Trends, Meetpal S. Kukal, Suat Irmak

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Detection of long-term changes in climate variables over large spatial scales is a very important prerequisite to the development of effective mitigation and adaption measures for the future potential climate change and for developing strategies for future hydrologic balance analyses under changing climate. Moreover, there is a need for effective approaches of providing information about these changes to decision makers, water managers and stakeholders to aid in efficient implementation of the developed strategies. This study involves computation, mapping and analyses of long-term (1968-2013) county-specific trends in annual, growing-season (1st May- 30th Sept.) and monthly air temperatures [(maximum (Tmax), …
