CEAS Reprint Series for Rare and Out of Print Publications

For the first project in the Council on East Asian Studies’s reprint series for rare and out of print publications, we are pleased to introduce an electronic republication of Rereading Sōseki: Three Early Twentieth-Century Japanese Novels, a very influential work from 1998 on the celebrated Japanese novelist Natsume Sōseki, written by Reiko Abe Auestad of the University of Oslo. J. Keith Vincent of Boston University has written a new introduction, and Auestad has provided a new preface as well as a bibliography of recent critical studies on Sōseki. We would like to thank John Whittier Treat for recommending this …

Computationally Inexpensive Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (Oli) Pansharpening, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy Jan 2016

Computationally Inexpensive Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (Oli) Pansharpening, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy

GSCE Faculty Publications

Pansharpening algorithms fuse higher spatial resolution panchromatic with lower spatial resolution multispectral imagery to create higher spatial resolution multispectral images. The free-availability and systematic global acquisition of Landsat 8 data indicate an expected need for global coverage and so computationally efficient Landsat 8 pansharpening. This study adapts and evaluates the established, and relatively computationally inexpensive, Brovey and context adaptive Gram Schmidt component substitution (CS) pansharpening methods for application to the Landsat 8 15 m panchromatic and 30 m red, green, blue, and near-infrared bands. The intensity images used by these CS pansharpening methods are derived as a weighted linear combination …

Elasmobranchii: A Survey Study On The Impact Of Our Everyday Choices In Marine Environments, Zoe Davis Jan 2016

Elasmobranchii: A Survey Study On The Impact Of Our Everyday Choices In Marine Environments, Zoe Davis

Biology Honors Papers

Oceans cover two‐thirds of our total planet surface area, ignoring the significance of depth, and even so, humans affect and change the ocean daily. This change is not often intentional or conscious, but rather is usually indirect. The hypothesis that humans do not consider how their actions affect the ocean unless they are educated on the subject matter and/or live within 25 miles of a coastline was examined through two survey studies. The purpose was to observe actions that affected the ocean and see if there were any trends with participants knowing which actions were positive for the ocean or …

Advancements In The Measurement Of The Cryosphere Using Geophysics — Introduction, Andrew D. Parsekian, John Bradford, Georgios Tsoflias, Steven Arcone, Bernd Kulessa Jan 2016

Advancements In The Measurement Of The Cryosphere Using Geophysics — Introduction, Andrew D. Parsekian, John Bradford, Georgios Tsoflias, Steven Arcone, Bernd Kulessa

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Frozen regions of the earth are known as the cryosphere. The arctic, Antarctica, permafrost, ice sheets, and glaciers are some of the most challenging places to measure subsurface parameters, but they can also be some of the most important places to science and engineering research due to their susceptibility to environmental change. Ground-based, airborne, and space-borne geophysical methods are deployed to observe targets below the ground or in ice that may be difficult or impossible to measure using conventional direct observations and measurements. The papers in this special section address recent advances in instrumentation development and deployment and computational capabilities …

Taxonomic Notes On The Genus Sceliphron Klug (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) From Northern Vietnam, With Description Of A New Species, Phong Huy Pham

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A taxonomic study on the genus Sceliphron Klug in northern Vietnam is presented. A total of 3 species are recorded: S. deforme deforme (F. Smith, 1856); S. madraspatanum kohli Sickmann, 1894; and S. clypeatum sp. nov., which is described for the first time here. A key to the species based on morphological characters is given, and new distributional records are also provided.

Towards 2030 : A Framework For Building A World-Class Post-Compulsory Education System For Wales, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2016

Towards 2030 : A Framework For Building A World-Class Post-Compulsory Education System For Wales, Ellen Hazelkorn

Reports

This report is being produced at a significant and opportune juncture in the development of education in Wales, across the UK, and internationally. Around the world, education is widely recognised as bringing “significant benefits to society, not only through higher employment opportunities and income but also via enhanced skills, improved social status and access to networks.”2 Yet, today, globalization, technological and demographic change, and the combined effects of the prolonged nature of the Great Recession, resource absorption challenges, and accelerating economic competitiveness are placing considerable pressures on education to deliver and demonstrate better value and benefit for citizens and society.3 …

Involvement Of Nadh Oxidase In Biofilm Formation In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Xiuchun Ge, Xiaoli Shi, Limei Shi, Jinlin Liu, Victoria Stone, Fanxiang Kong, Todd Kitten, Ping Xu Jan 2016

Involvement Of Nadh Oxidase In Biofilm Formation In Streptococcus Sanguinis, Xiuchun Ge, Xiaoli Shi, Limei Shi, Jinlin Liu, Victoria Stone, Fanxiang Kong, Todd Kitten, Ping Xu

Microbiology and Immunology Publications

Biofilms play important roles in microbial communities and are related to infectious diseases. Here, we report direct evidence that a bacterial nox gene encoding NADH oxidase is involved in biofilm formation. A dramatic reduction in biofilm formation was observed in a Streptococcus sanguinis nox mutant under anaerobic conditions without any decrease in growth. The membrane fluidity of the mutant bacterial cells was found to be decreased and the fatty acid composition altered, with increased palmitic acid and decreased stearic acid and vaccenic acid. Extracellular DNA of the mutant was reduced in abundance and bacterial competence was suppressed. Gene expression analysis …

Assessing The Impact Of A Supermarket Shuttle Model On Supermarket Access Within Cabell County, West Virginia, Doug Wiley Jan 2016

Assessing The Impact Of A Supermarket Shuttle Model On Supermarket Access Within Cabell County, West Virginia, Doug Wiley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Will the implementation of a grocery shuttle impact supermarket access for residents of Cabell County, West Virginia? The concentration of supermarkets in the City of Huntington has led to a service gap in the outlying census block groups of the study area. Supermarket access is concentrated in the City of Huntington and may provide a positive outcome for families living within the city. The study assesses the impact of the implementation of a supermarket shuttle on supermarket access within the study area, through spatial analysis of supermarkets, transportation networks, and census block groups. The transportation network data and census block …

Rest, Sweet Nymphs: Pastoral Origins Of The English Madrigal, Danielle Van Oort Jan 2016

Rest, Sweet Nymphs: Pastoral Origins Of The English Madrigal, Danielle Van Oort

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis is an interdisciplinary study of the impact pastoral themes in art, literature, and music had on the stylistic and thematic development of the late-Renaissance English madrigal (ca. 1590–1620), specifically works by Elizabethan composers. Madrigals were profoundly influenced by poetry and visual art as the basis for text and subject matter. Consequently, many English madrigals, both light and serious forms, cultivated Arcadian themes presented in Italian idyllic art and literature of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. Works discussed throughout each chapter include Jacopo Sannazaro’s poetic collection, Arcadia (ca. 1489), Edmund Spenser’s seasonal eclogues, The Shepheardes Calender (1579), Oliver Isaac’s …
