Managing The Legacy Of Historical Land Use In Central Appalachia: Soil Health, Carbon Storage, And Restoration Across Disturbed Ecosystems, Kyra R. Dukich
Managing The Legacy Of Historical Land Use In Central Appalachia: Soil Health, Carbon Storage, And Restoration Across Disturbed Ecosystems, Kyra R. Dukich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historical mining, intensive timber harvesting, agriculture, and atmospheric acid deposition have left lasting impacts on soil health throughout the Central Appalachian region, reducing soil productivity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience. This thesis evaluated restoration strategies across two long-term research systems in West Virginia to determine how land-use history and soil amendments influence soil health, carbon dynamics, and ecosystem recovery. The first study examined reclaimed mine lands and marginal agricultural soils planted with switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) or willow (Salix spp.) and treated with biochar or inorganic fertilizer. Soil greenhouse gas production, aggregate stability, total soil C:N, pH, and soil organic matter …

Forces Of Movement: How Changing Perceptions Of Slavery And Freedom Affected Black Lives In The Mason-Dixon Borderland, 1861-1872, Rachael B. Nicholas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mason-Dixon Line, first surveyed between 1763 and 1767, became the symbolic “dividing line” between free and slave states in antebellum America. This perception of the Mason-Dixon Line allowed a larger borderland to grow around it: the Mason-Dixon Borderland, which consisted of northern Maryland, Washington, D.C., southern Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley (western Virginia and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia).
Americans used slavery and freedom as referents to make decisions about survival, military policy, politics, and freedom-seeking during the Civil War. Those decisions had consequences for their movement across the Mason-Dixon Borderland, causing it to change as …

Deposition And Diagenesis Of Permo-Triassic Gypsum From Wyoming And Texas: Saline Lake And Groundwater Systems Of Equatorial Pangea, Maya Yamei Bradford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Knowledge of gypsum textures and the processes that yield them is important for interpreting the history of environments, climates, and life on Earth. This is because gypsum textures are products of specific environmental, microbiological, and diagenetic processes, and because gypsum is relatively common in the Earth’s sedimentary record. Despite this significance, gypsum is relatively understudied. The fundamental goal of this dissertation is to advance our understanding of gypsum textures by presenting detailed, petrography-based investigations of Permo-Triassic gypsum from the continental interior of Pangea.
Gypsum is typical in the Permo-Triassic sedimentary record of tropical Pangea, where it is associated with red …
Divided Loyalties: Military Recruitment And Emancipation In Kentucky, Jacob Joseph Klinger
Divided Loyalties: Military Recruitment And Emancipation In Kentucky, Jacob Joseph Klinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores how Unionist Kentuckians leveraged their military recruitment to negotiate the scope of federal emancipation during the American Civil War. By 1863, the War Department’s need for troops superseded the racial sensitivities of inhabitants in loyal slave states like Kentucky by promising to free and enlist Black men if white recruits failed to fill the quota. Kentucky’s proslavery Unionists responded and white volunteerism surged by 23 percent, 10 percent more than the national average, to fill the quota and negate military emancipation. Kentucky leaders heralded the recruiting effort but struggled to sustain it alongside an uncredited militia which …

Phylogeography, Fungal Host Specificity, And Fitness In The Corallorhiza Maculata Species Complex, Hana Thixton-Nolan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mycoheterotrophic plants exploit fungi for most or all nutritional needs, providing a compelling system to address the evolutionary consequences of genome reduction, population-level variation, and germination requirements. I am using the widespread Corallorhiza maculata species complex to address questions of genomic variation, fungal host specificity, morphological variation, and germination requirements across the broad geographic range from Mexico to northern North America. This complex contains C. bulbosa, C. macrantha, and C. mertensiana, the latter with three varieties (maculata, occidentalis, and mexicana). These taxa vary in flowering time, floral morphology, and fungal associations. However, the degree …

Spatial analyses using Emergency Medical Services data to inform healthcare.
Jeffrey Pesarsick
Background
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) often serve as the initial entry point for patients into the healthcare system in the United States. Rural health disparities, geographic isolation, socioeconomic disadvantages, and operational challenges create disparities in access to EMS services. Disparities include prolonged response times, less resources available, and inequities in levels of care available. The overall goal of these series of projects was to quantify the extent to which operational challenges in EMS data impact health, and how EMS data could be used to identify neighborhood level trends …

Stacked Risks, Unequal Returns: Stratified Risk Allocation In Housing And Higher Education, Regina M. Lewis
Stacked Risks, Unequal Returns: Stratified Risk Allocation In Housing And Higher Education, Regina M. Lewis
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In the United States, public policy does more than distribute resources. It distributes risk. The same policy can create profoundly different consequences for different people because policies operate on landscapes shaped by generations of unequal investment and opportunity.
To explore this process, I introduce the Stratified Risk Allocation (SRA) Framework to demonstrate how facially neutral policies reproduce inequality by allocating risk across populations with unequal capacity to absorb it. Drawing on risk society theory, historical institutionalism, critical race theory, intersectionality, and stratification economics, the SRA framework distinguishes between Exposure, the likelihood of encountering policy-generated risk, and Capacity, the resources available …

The Role Of User Experience In Virtual Reality Flight Training: A Comparison With Pc-Based Simulation, Tianxin Zhang, Christina M. Frederick, Barbara Chaparro
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The current project explores how user experience (UX) in virtual reality (VR) flight simulation influences both cognitive learning outcomes and procedural skill acquisition when compared to traditional desktop-based simulation.. Using a quasi-transfer of training design, 48 student pilots were randomly assigned to VR, Desktop, or Control groups and trained on the Chandelle maneuver. UX was measured with the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), while training effectiveness was evaluated through a post-training knowledge test and recorded maneuver performance on a high-fidelity flight training device. Results indicated that the VR group reported significantly higher UX scores in Attractiveness, Stimulation, and Novelty, and showed …
Innovative Sovereignty: California Tribes' Use Of The Nonprofit Corporation, Stephen F. Diamond, Jennifer W. Kuan
Innovative Sovereignty: California Tribes' Use Of The Nonprofit Corporation, Stephen F. Diamond, Jennifer W. Kuan
South Dakota Law Review
Native American tribes have long sought, but not always received, federal recognition as sovereign Indian Nations. Recognition confers substantial financial and legal benefits including access to federally funded health services, education and housing. Sovereign status allows tribes to pursue business activity. Tribal sovereignty, however, has significant limitations. The recognition process is costly, time-consuming, highly politicized, and often uncertain. Federal law enforcement and health services that should follow recognition are chronically underfunded. We examine the efforts of Indian tribes in California’s Monterey County to use the nonprofit corporation form to establish clear property rights to land. We interview key participants and …
Pretrial Justice In Indian Country And Bordertowns-Including Rural Tribal Communities In The Bail Reform Conversation, Jordan Gross
Pretrial Justice In Indian Country And Bordertowns-Including Rural Tribal Communities In The Bail Reform Conversation, Jordan Gross
South Dakota Law Review
Pretrial detention rates in the United States are down, except in rural counties. Indigenous people are both over-represented and under-protected in settler-colonial criminal justice systems. Yet the criminal justice needs and experiences of rural and Indigenous people are largely overlooked in criminal justice reform research and discourse. I examined the role of rurality in bail administration in Pretrial Justice in Out-of-the-Way Places – Including Rural Communities in the Bail Reform Conversation. There I explained how bail reform measures centered on urban and suburban needs and demographics fail to address pretrial justice challenges and opportunities unique to rural communities. This Article …

Freedom Of Tribal Association, Andrea Nishi
Freedom Of Tribal Association, Andrea Nishi
South Dakota Law Review
In Morton v. Mancari, the Supreme Court upheld a statute granting hiring preference to Indian candidates on the grounds that it did so not on the basis of race but on the basis of affiliation with a tribe as a political entity. As the Court recognized, if such a law were struck down on equal protection grounds, the basis for all federal policy protecting Indian interests would be undermined. In Mancari, this reasoning was used to uphold a law that benefitted Indian candidates pursuant to the federal government’s recognized trust responsibility to Indian tribes. The logic of Mancari has since …

This paper delves into the escalating risks faced by urban coastal communities due to tidal and storm flooding, exacerbated by climate change-induced Sea Level Rise (SLR). Projections indicate a potential increase in sea levels by at least 3 feet by 2100, with historical data revealing an average annual rise of 1.2-1.7 mm since the 1900s. With over 300 million individuals inhabiting coastal areas, low-lying regions emerge as particularly vulnerable to the impacts of SLR. This accelerated rise amplifies the significant challenge of nuisance flooding, a local-scale issue aggravated by high tide and winds, leading to inundation, road closures, infrastructure deterioration, …

Unintended Consequences Of Estuarine Management Within The Trajectory Of Recovery: Examples From The Chesapeake Bay, Jessica S. Turner, Fei Da, Molly M. Mitchell
OES Faculty Publications
Estuaries are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, human populations, and economic activities such as fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. Managing estuarine systems often involves interventions to regulate sediment and nutrient inputs with the goal of improving water quality, and subsequently the economic values of the estuary. However, these management strategies can produce unintended consequences. The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary recovering from eutrophication which provides clear case studies for these patterns. In the Chesapeake Bay, decreased sediment inputs, resulting from shoreline stabilization and watershed modifications, can impair marsh resilience to sea level rise and disrupt sediment-light-algal interactions affecting water clarity. Likewise, …

Remote Sensing Of Particulate Organic Carbon And Phytoplankton Carbon In The Northern South China Sea, Xiaoju Pan, Tung-Yuan Ho, George T. F. Wong, Jen-Hua Tai, Lijuan Nie
OES Faculty Publications
Surface concentrations of particulate organic carbon (POC) and phytoplankton carbon (Cphy) in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) have been assessed successfully by remote sensing with appropriate regional tuning. Match-up comparisons between satellite derivations and field observations showed uncertainties of ± 28.5% for POC and ± 37.0% for Cphy. The satellite-derived climatological distributions are consistent with previous reports. In the open NSCS where phytoplankton growth is controlled primarily by the convective overturn, both POC and Cphy are higher in winter, associating with the effect of stronger northeast monsoons and surface cooling, than in summer, when …

Assessing The Diversity And Composition Of Crayfish Assemblages In The Ogeechee River Basin, Reginald Turner
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Crayfish assemblage composition in the southeastern United States is understudied relative to other aquatic taxa, such as aquatic insects and fishes, and the Coastal Plain watersheds of that region are particularly underrepresented in the contemporary literature on this topic. For example, although 38% of the crayfish species in Georgia are considered “species of greatest conservation need,” most of the distributional data used to make these designations are outdated, with some dating back over 50 years. This thesis sought to update our understanding of the contemporary distributions of crayfish species within the Ogeechee River Basin (ORB), a watershed in southeastern Georgia …

Untalented: What Is The Role Of “Talent” In Art Class?, Sean Bianchi
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The concept of talent in art education is widely accepted yet rarely challenged or questioned. This essay critically examines the construction of artistic talent perceptions, the sociohistorical roots of the term itself, and the implications of what talent does for art education. This speculative essay problematizes talent as a persuasive force over art students and art teachers alike, criticizes the accessibility of art to the naïve and art enthusiast alike, as well as the consequences of talent constructs over the future of artistic instruction within public education. Utilizing an aesthetic framework, I explore what the role of talent in art …

Mirroring Memory: Material, Reflection, And Becoming, Nila Mojaveri
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This thesis explores how memory shapes identity through material, reflection, and tactile processes. Drawing from my personal experience of migration from Iran and the emotional distance from home, the work examines memory as a shifting, layered, and embodied phenomenon rather than a fixed narrative. Through the use of mirror, clay, fabric, and paint, I investigate how materials can hold, reflect, and transform lived experience. Each material carries specific meaning: mirrors introduce fragmentation and reflection, clay records touch and grounding, fabric evokes softness and domestic memory, and paint creates atmosphere through layering and tone. Together, these materials form a visual …
