Proactive Or Predetermined?: Contextualizing Color-Blind Policing Practices In New York City, Rachel E. Lautenschlager
Proactive Or Predetermined?: Contextualizing Color-Blind Policing Practices In New York City, Rachel E. Lautenschlager
Open Access Theses
Since the widespread growth of proactive policing strategies across the United States during the 1990s, community members and scholars alike have critiqued these law enforcement techniques for their injurious effects on minority communities. Prior research has established that suspect and neighborhood characteristics influence police decision making and stop outcomes, with Blacks and Latinos faring worse than their White counterparts. What remains largely unknown, however, are the underlying mechanisms driving these disparities. This study approaches the problem by conducting a neighborhood-level analysis of the reasons that police officers provided for making 4.5 million stops over a period of twelve years as …

Totality And Infinity—Nationalism And The Face: An Ethnographic Exploration In The Republic Of Turkey And State Of Israel, Charles Phifer Nicholson Jr.
Student Scholarship
This paper argues that the historical roots and current manifestations of secular and religious nationalism in the Republic of Turkey and the State of Israel are well understood in light of Emmanuel Levinas’ concept of totality. Furthermore, as discovered through ethnographic research collected concerning the lived experiences of ethnic and religious minorities in these nations, it posits that the best response to these all-encompassing, exclusive worldviews is found in the reality of the human face, as conceptualized by Levinas in connection with his notion of infinity.
The foundation and primary source of this project is ethnographic research collected in the …

Understanding Transgender Community: Locating Support And Resiliency Using The Minority Stress Model, Rosalind D. Kichler
Understanding Transgender Community: Locating Support And Resiliency Using The Minority Stress Model, Rosalind D. Kichler
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The minority stress model (Meyer 2003) predicts stigmatized minorities, like transgender persons, suffer worse mental health due to exposure to discrimination. However support from similarly stigmatized others can ameliorate the effect of discrimination stress. Although gender and sexual minorities are often assumed to have access to and support from “the” LGBTQ community or “the” transgender community, many may not understand themselves as members of this community nor feel supported by it. Therefore it is essential to interrogate what community means to LGBTQ persons, particularly to transgender people for whom a paucity of literature exists. Based on in-depth interviews with 10 …
Extended Gamut Printing In Flexographic Packaging And The Impact Of Brand Management, Andrew Bogan
Extended Gamut Printing In Flexographic Packaging And The Impact Of Brand Management, Andrew Bogan
Honors Theses
Flexography is the dominant print process in regards to the reproduction of packaging products. Packaging, particular the color and graphics, is an essential tangible element for brand owners striving for brand management. Extended gamut printing is a printing technique that can produce high color saturations on packaging samples, which can have positive implications for brand management. Currently, most information on extended gamut printing is proprietary, making it very difficult for non-print industry members to obtain and utilize information relating to the benefits of extended gamut printing. The aim of this study was to provide evidence that packaging samples with extended …

Geographic Distribution Of Maternal Group B Streptococcus Colonization And Infant Death During Birth Hospitalization: Eastern Wisconsin, Jessica J. F. Kram, Dennis J. Baumgardner, Kiley B. Vander Wyst, Melissa A. Lemke
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose
Maternal group B Streptococcus (GBS) can be transmitted from a colonized mother to newborn during vaginal delivery and may or may not contribute to infant death. This study aimed to explore the geographic distribution and risk factors of maternal GBS colonization and infant death during birth hospitalization.
Methods
We retrospectively studied mothers with live birth(s) in a large eastern Wisconsin hospital system from 2007 through 2013. Associations between maternal and neonatal variables, GBS colonization and infant death were examined using chi-squared, Mann-Whitney U and t-tests. Multivariable logistic regression models also were developed.
Results
Study population (N = 99,305) had …

Reducing Nitrate Pollution By Redirecting Farm Runoff Into The Subsurface Of An Herbaceous Riparian Buffer Zone., Tamru Girma Taye
Theses and Dissertations
In areas dominated by agricultural land use, excess nitrate is one of the leading contributors to water pollution. Tile drains, installed to drain crop root zones for maximum yield, fast track the introduction of nitrate-laden water into a nearby stream. Due to the risks elevated levels of nitrate pose to an ecosystem and its inhabitants, the following project explores a method of reducing nitrate pollution. One that can do it as close to the source of the pollution as possible.
A tile draining a 60acre farm in central Illinois was redirected to discharge its contents through subsurface flow into an …

A Middle Miocene Rhinoceros Find In Transylvania: 19Th Century Forgotten Correspondence, Vlad A. Codrea, Márton Venczel
Studia UBB Geologia
The single report in Romania of the Middle Miocene rhinoceros Brachypotherium brachypus, a rare species in our country or elsewhere in Europe, is from Petros locality in Hațeg basin. This find is an old one, nearly a century and half ago. A fragmentary letter written by the Hațeg naturalist Ádám Buda to Prof. Antal Koch retrieved in the Paleontological Museum of Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca brings some light about this find. The letter was probably written around 1881-1882 and reveals the active exchanges of scientific data between the professor from Cluj and country people interested in natural sciences.

The One Health initiative is a global effort fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to address challenges in human, animal, and environmental health. While One Health has received considerable press, its benefits remain unclear because its effects have not been quantitatively described. We systematically surveyed the published literature and used social network analysis to measure interdisciplinarity in One Health studies constructing dynamic pathogen transmission models. The number of publications fulfilling our search criteria increased by 14.6% per year, which is faster than growth rates for life sciences as a whole and for most biology subdisciplines. Surveyed publications clustered into three communities: one used …

Woods, Sidewalks, Highways, And Homes: Boundaries, Intersections, And Spaces Of Agency In African American Children's Literature, Rachel Leigh Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation seeks to define how place and space figure into key African American children's literature texts of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. After sketching a brief history of this genre, this project explores how African American children's literature can be imagined as an intersection between African American literature written for adults and (mainstream) children's literature written primarily for a white audience, so the creation of African American children's texts involves the construction of a crossroads between these two points. These works create their own spaces and develop specific meanings and uses for traditional literary landscapes. The spaces highlighted …

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley
The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The reclamation of the Missouri Bootheel began in the early twentieth century with the formation of the Little River Drainage District, a publicly incorporated district that stretches across six counties in the Missouri Bootheel. The formation of the district occurred after timber companies deforested much of the land in the late nineteenth century. The district employed skilled engineers and contractors who used large dragline excavators to dig more than six hundred miles of ditches and canals. The formation of the district and the infrastructure it created altered and controlled the natural environment thereby facilitating the development of sustainable agriculture in …

“In The End We All Come To Be Cured Of Our Sentiments”: Violence And Cultural Anxiety In Cormac Mccarthy’S Border Trilogy, Stephen Michael Turner
Student Theses and Dissertations
Each of Cormac McCarthy’s works contain unflinching violence and gore. A majority of McCarthy critics agree that the presence of violence within his work remain disconnected from each novel's plot and theme. This examination of Cormac McCarthy's "Border Trilogy" illustrates the political and historical relationship between the United States and Mexico, as represented through various characters within the trilogy, and also explores the role that cultural anxiety plays as a primary motivator for violence. The loss of a certain way of life is a major concept found within McCarthy’s work, and the “Border Trilogy” serves as a meditation on this …

Biology Faculty Research
A central challenge in global ecology is the identification of key functional processes in ecosystems that scale, but do not require, data for individual species across landscapes. Given that nearly all tree species form symbiotic relationships with one of two types of mycorrhizal fungi – arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi – and that AM- and ECM-dominated forests often have distinct nutrient economies, the detection and mapping of mycorrhizae over large areas could provide valuable insights about fundamental ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, species interactions, and overall forest productivity. We explored remotely sensed tree canopy spectral properties to …

Belarus After Communism: Where To Now?, Preslav Mantchev
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper examines the political development of Belarus since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Attention is devoted to the country’s internal politics, along with its foreign relations. Especially scrutinized is the de-facto dictatorial rule of president Alexander Lukashenko, along with the deteriorated relations between Belarus and powerful European states including Russia. A thorough historical context is provided, which identifies political violence and demographic change as causal factors for the country’s current political environment.
