Threatened And Invasive Reptiles Are Not Two Sides Of The Same Coin, Reid Tingley, Peter J. Mahoney, Andrew M. Durso, Aimee G. Tallian, Alejandra Moran-Ordonez, Karen H. Beard

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The ‘two sides of the same coin’ hypothesis posits that biological traits that predispose species to extinction and invasion lie on opposite ends of a continuum. Conversely, anthropogenic factors may have similar effects on extinction and invasion risk. We test these two hypotheses using data on more than 1000 reptile species.

A Comparison Of Accounting Fraud Before And After Sarbanes-Oxley, Kayla Dowd

Honors Program Theses and Projects

(Introduction): Within all trades of business, the potential for the perpetration of accounting fraud within companies is unfortunately not an infrequent occurrence. Accounting fraud is the “intentional misrepresentation or alteration of accounting records regarding sales, revenues, expenses, and other factors for a profit motive such as inflating company stock values, obtaining more favorable financing, or avoiding debt obligations” (Business Dictionary). The reasons for the frequent phenomenon of accounting fraud are countless. To name a few: greed, lack of transparency, poor management information, and poor accounting internal controls signify some of the various explanations for accounting fraud (Frost 1). Whether or …

The Participant Effects Of Private School Vouchers Across The Globe: A Meta-Analytic And Systematic Review, M. Danish Shakeel, Kaitlin Anderson, Patrick J. Wolf

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

School voucher programs (a.k.a. opportunity scholarships) are scholarship programs - frequently government funded - that pay for students to attend private schools of their choice. Many private school vouchers programs have been initiated around the world with the goal of increasing the academic performance of students. Voucher programs are often viewed as a way to increase achievement and satisfaction for individual students and families, while at the same time creating competitive pressures that encourage other schools in the area to improve. Countries like Chile and India have developed extensive school voucher programs. While many studies have been conducted on school …

Age Re-Assessment Of The Cave Bear Assemblage From Urşilor Cave, North-Western Romania, Marius V. Robu May 2016

Age Re-Assessment Of The Cave Bear Assemblage From Urşilor Cave, North-Western Romania, Marius V. Robu

International Journal of Speleology

The most common methods used for assessing the relative age of a cave bear bone assemblage are the P4/4 index (morphodynamic index of the cave bear fourth premolar), the K-index and the Index of Plumpness (both used for cave bear’s 2nd metatarsal). Preliminary work on this (Robu et al., 2011), for Urşilor Cave (NW Romania), has indicated one of the youngest European cave bear populations. As the number of extracted fossil bones from the palaeontological excavation increased recently, a re-assessment of the of the age of the cave bear assemblage is necessary. 206 cave bear fourth …

Challenges Developing Biologics For The Prevention And Treatment Of Infectious Diseases Impacting Global Health, Steven Hadley May 2016

Challenges Developing Biologics For The Prevention And Treatment Of Infectious Diseases Impacting Global Health, Steven Hadley

Cell Culture Engineering XV

Biologics have enjoyed tremendous success as products in high income countries of the world. However the high cost of these products today prevent their use in low income countries and with the notable exception of palivizumab there has been little commercial interest in developing biologics for infectious diseases that are prevalent in these geographies. Recent advances in the study of HIV, malaria, pertussis and Ebola highlight the potential of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for prevention or treatment of these diseases. The evolution of the industrialized CHO process over the past 30 years to satisfy market demands for mAbs is remarkable. The …

Beyond Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learned Information In Forodhani Park, Jaimie Lynn Mulligan

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This ethnographic study examines Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Mji Mkongwe (Stone Town), Zanzibar, and how ecological knowledge shared by locals on the island is formed and is shared among locals in a park setting. Using a framework of political ecology, this study specifically highlights ecological pressures of local population growth, global climate change on a local scale, and local economic changes as the key drivers for the creation and cultural importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge. To discover both the ecological pressures and the examples of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, I conducted semi-structured, open-ended interviews in Forodhani Park, a public park on …

Information Seeking Practices Of Parents: Exploring Skills, Face Threats And Social Networks, Betsy Disalvo, Parisa Khanipour Roshan, Briana B. Morrison

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Parents are often responsible for finding, selecting, and facilitating their children's out-of-school learning experiences. One might expect that the recent surge in online educational tools and the vast online network of information about informal learning would make this easier for all parents. Instead, the increase in these free, accessible resources is contributing to an inequality of use between children from lower and higher socio-economic status (SES). Through over 60 interviews with a diverse group of parents, we explored parents' ability to find learning opportunities and their role in facilitating educational experiences for their children. We identified differences in the use …

No Soy De Aquí, Ni Soy De Allá: How Stateless Individuals In The Dominican Republic Construct National Identity, Lindsay Wright

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Resolution 12, a piece of national legislation in the Dominican Republic, retroactively revokes citizenship from individuals whose ancestors came to the country illegally. The resolution was proposed in 2007, signed into law in 2008, and ratified in 2013, rendering a large number of Dominican-born individuals stateless. Using the framework of Communication Theory of Identity (CTI), the researcher analyzed the communication processes and cultural elements stateless individuals utilize to form their national identity. The researcher used a qualitative approach to gather data, which were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Responses from the participants, provided through in-depth individual interviews, indicate that …

Markers Of Social Movement Success: The Case Of Dominican Citizenship After Resolution 12, Kylie N. Skorupa

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Social movements are the basis for social change, started when a group challenges political authority and ending when its goals have finally been met. Social movement theory names many factors commonly found in social movements such as movement structure, leadership, framing, symbolic representation, resources, transnational activism, political opportunity, and media coverage, as well as many indicators of success including advocacy, public awareness, and policy change. It is vital to understand the indicators of success and their interplay within the movement to evaluate how a movement achieved success. This thesis seeks to examine these eight factors within the social movement MONDHA, …

Recurrent Mutations Of T-Cell Receptor And Co-Stimulatory Signaling Proteins In Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas, Joseph Rohr May 2016

Recurrent Mutations Of T-Cell Receptor And Co-Stimulatory Signaling Proteins In Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas, Joseph Rohr

Theses & Dissertations

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) comprise a heterogeneous group of mature T-cell neoplasms with a poor prognosis. Recently, mutations in TET2 and other epigenetic modifiers as well as RHOA have been identified in these diseases, particularly in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). CD28 is the major co-stimulatory receptor in T-cells which, upon binding ligand, induces sustained T-cell proliferation and cytokine production when combined with T-cell receptor stimulation, through many signaling molecules including VAV1. This thesis identifies recurrent mutations in CD28 in PTCLs, as well as mutations in VAV1. Two residues of CD28 – D124 and T195 – were recurrently mutated in 11.3% …
