The findings of this study included, but are not limited to, the passionate approach the study group …
Informational Aspects Of Audiovisual Identity Matching, Lauren Wood Mavica
Informational Aspects Of Audiovisual Identity Matching, Lauren Wood Mavica
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this study, we investigated what informational aspects of faces could account for the ability to match an individual’s face to their voice, using only static images. In each of the first six experiments, we simultaneously presented one voice recording along with two manipulated images of faces (e.g. top half of the face, bottom half of the face, etc.), a target face and distractor face. The participant’s task was to choose which of the images they thought belonged to the same individual as the voice recording. The voices remained un-manipulated. In Experiment 7 we used eye tracking in order to …

Investigating Approaches To Media Literacy: An Analysis Of Media Literacy Organizations, Michael Francis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Media literacy is a competency needed for success in the 21st century yet a clear purpose does not exist that is useful in curriculum design. The purpose of this study was to investigate a combined (eclectic) approach to media literacy education according to selected international media literacy organizations. Determining an eclectic approach from subject area experts will be useful in designing and integrating media literacy curriculum. Methodologically, this study was a qualitative content analysis and is thematic in nature using a constant comparative method of analysis. Supporting frameworks were established through standards based curriculum development and Schwab’s (1969, 1971, 1973, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
My intention for this show is to explore the effect of alienation that ironically is being produced by social media. The principal concept is developed around shame, sharing, and notoriety on three different social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram. This show explores the social media perception of myself in the realms of human interaction, identity, and memory in social media through the critical appropriation of the languages of design and photography. The installation with four Facebook profile pictures in large scale and framed looks at the way a personal image can convey the impression of widely different personalities. …

Managed Discourse: Legitimizing Principal Identity And Agency, Matias Arellano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Given the demands of the era of accountability and standardization, the purpose of this study was to explore how educational leaders construct their identity and agency. The study utilized overlapping post-structural and critical theoretical frameworks on identity and agency to analyze how high school principals interpret and enact comprehensive school reform rhetoric and their state’s educational leadership standards. In addition to several cycles of coding, a critical discourse analysis was performed with the input of the participants’ high schools in order to further analyze the form and function of discourses, socially situated meanings, and ideologies that constitute being an educational …
Mhysa Or Monster: Masculinization, Mimicry, And The White Savior In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Rachel Hartnett
Mhysa Or Monster: Masculinization, Mimicry, And The White Savior In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Rachel Hartnett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Song of Ice and Fire is unarguably one of the most popular fantasy series of all time. Notwithstanding its success, the series has only recently begun to be analyzed critically. George R.R. Martin’s books are often celebrated for breaking many of the tropes common in fantasy literature. Despite this, the series is nonetheless a product of a genre that has been shaped by white, male authors. Using such prominent postcolonial scholars as Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Homi Bhabha, and Albert Memmi, I analyze the five published books of Martin’s series. I argue that although Martin seems to be aware …

King Charles III of Spain implemented a series of Enlightenment reforms throughout his domain following the 1763 defeat of the Seven Years War Among the royal officials sent to enact these reforms in the Caribbean, the Crown dispatched Field Marshal Alejandro O’Reilly to the colony of Puerto Rico Historians have attributed to his 1765 inspection, or visita, and subsequent report, or memoria, the foundations for a turning point in the island’s history Despite the historical consensus that has lauded O’Reilly’s recommendations, this inspector-general does not merit the credit that historians consistently have given him Agrarian and economic patterns such as …
Seeds Of Brightness: Poetic Memory In James Joyce’S Ulysses, Laura Quinlan Dejong
Seeds Of Brightness: Poetic Memory In James Joyce’S Ulysses, Laura Quinlan Dejong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation examines the process of “poetic memory” in James Joyce’s Ulysses, a term chosen by Italian philologist Gian Biagio Conte to describe allusive processes in the poetry of classical texts, specifically the epic. Conte examines and classifies the epic codes and norms residing within and constituting the classical epic genre. These change with each successive epic according to the author’s culture. The allusive process enables an author’s dialogue with his or her predecessors, which has implications for the establishment of textual authority. By applying Conte’s system of epic codes and norms toward a reading of Ulysses, it is possible …
Silence, Expression, Manifestation: Developing Female Desire And Gender Balance In Early Modern Italian, English, And Spanish Drama, Mitchel Baccinelli
Silence, Expression, Manifestation: Developing Female Desire And Gender Balance In Early Modern Italian, English, And Spanish Drama, Mitchel Baccinelli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Renaissance and Baroque drama offers a view into gender dynamics of the time. What is seen is a development in the allowed expression and manifestation of desire by females, beginning from a point of near silence, and arriving at points of verbal statement and even physical violence. Specifically, in La Mandragola by Niccolò Machiavelli, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega, there appears a chronological progression, whereby using desire and its expression as a metric in conjunction with modern concepts of gender and sexuality to measure a shift in relation to what is and is …

In each of those stages, the data were examined using a cyclical and recursive process of investigation-interpretationintegration- illustration. By the completion of the conceptualization stage, a theory was developed to describe the interdependence of the four influential factors that shape and sustain teacher …
Testing Momentum Enhancement Of Ribbon Fin Based Propulsion Using A Robotic Model With An Adjustable Body, Ian L. English
Testing Momentum Enhancement Of Ribbon Fin Based Propulsion Using A Robotic Model With An Adjustable Body, Ian L. English
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A robotic ribbon fin with twelve independent fin rays, elastic fin membrane, and a body of adjustable height was developed for this thesis specifically to test the 1990 theory put forth by Lighthill and Blake that a multiplicative propulsive enhancement exists for Gymnotiform and Balisiform swimmers based on the ratio of body and fin heights. Until now, the theory has not been experimentally tested. Proof of such a momentum enhancement could have a profound effect on unmanned underwater vehicle design and shed light on the evolutionary advantage to body-fin ratios found in nature, shown as optimal for momentum enhancement in …

The Legitimacy Of Cookbooks As Rhetoric Of Southern Culture, Cynthia Carrico-Rausch
The Legitimacy Of Cookbooks As Rhetoric Of Southern Culture, Cynthia Carrico-Rausch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Community cookbooks operate through a rhetoric of place as ways of thinking about belonging and influencing communal identities. They reveal much about a community, including the sharing of memories and tradition, geographical identification, and representation of socio-cultural hierarchies and habits. For that reason, this paper advances the claim that the discourse and visuality in community cookbooks, specifically the cookbooks 200 Years of Charleston Cooking, Charleston Receipts, and Charleston Receipts Repeats published during the height of a renaissance in Southern literature, influenced the identity of “Southerness” which, taken in conjunction with place, space, and time has resulted in a unification of …

Until now, no systematic research has focused on the differential effects of selfefficacy on academic achievement in monolingual and bilingual undergraduate college students. The present study aimed to investigate this relationship, as well as contribute additional insight on whether the academic self-efficacy of monolingual and bilingual undergraduate …
The Terror Of Utopia: Examining Doubles As The Source For Cognition In Margaret Atwood’S Fiction, Rosemary Toulas
The Terror Of Utopia: Examining Doubles As The Source For Cognition In Margaret Atwood’S Fiction, Rosemary Toulas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Much has been written about the effectiveness of speculative fiction, especially utopian works. In this thesis I will examine the source of fear in Margaret Artwood’s works The Handmaid’s Tale and Oryx and Crake using Sigmund Freud’s “The Uncanny” to illustrate the terror of doubles as they appear in the novels. The terror in The Handmaid’s Tale comes from the descriptions of distorted physical environments, while the horror in Oryx and Crake emanates from the familiar yet twisted animals and characters found inside the corporate compounds. Through the recognition of these doubles as uncanny, Atwood’s work moves readers to cognition …
The Temple In Jerusalem Idealized And The Historic- Synagogue-Institution: A Study In Synagogue Purposes In An American Context, Kenneth Brander
The Temple In Jerusalem Idealized And The Historic- Synagogue-Institution: A Study In Synagogue Purposes In An American Context, Kenneth Brander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation sketched key structural-functional design characteristics of the Temple in Jerusalem as they emerge from archeological finds, academic scholarship, and rabbinic literary and legal traditions. It illustrated numerous embodied and functional parallels, with detailed descriptions of two successful American Synagogues drawing on the documents of social history, one built and led by the leadership of a lay community and the other dominated by a renowned Rabbi. Both synagogues seem to have inherited, continued, and celebrated venerable purposes that the rise of synagogues once took over from the ideals of the destroyed Temple in Jerusalem. Synagogues become successful institutions when …

According to higher education preparation standards, students who complete master’s preparation programs in student affairs should not only be acquiring skills and knowledge, they should be socialized into the field of student affairs Master’s level preparation programs in college student personnel or higher education leadership are often coupled with a graduate assistantship so that students are able to obtain valuable theory-to-practice experience This additional experience becomes complementary to the work the graduate student is doing in the classroom and thus becomes a practical learning opportunity After completing a preparation program, a former master’s student will most likely move into an …
Verb Memory And Text Comprehension, Lamiya Khan
Verb Memory And Text Comprehension, Lamiya Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Kersten, Earles, and Berger (2015) reported a distinction between two kinds of motion representations. Extrinsic motions involve the path of a person or object, with respect to an external frame of reference. Intrinsic motions involve the manner in which the various parts of a person or object move. They found that intrinsic motions are encoded and remembered with the corresponding actor performing the motions in a unitized memory representation. Extrinsic motions are encoded as separate memory representations, making them more difficult to accurately associate with the correct actor. In the proposed experiment, I will examine the generality of this distinction …
Creating A Religious Divide: Journeys Through Hell In British And American Science Fiction, Advitiya Sachdev
Creating A Religious Divide: Journeys Through Hell In British And American Science Fiction, Advitiya Sachdev
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Science fiction, like any other genre, is sub-divided into categories. Yet scholars in the field have long debated the existence of multiple, regional sf genres. The most critiqued of these classifications is between sf produced in Britain, and America. Though Britain remains the birthplace of sf, American author have undoubtedly left a mark on the genre. Scholars mark this difference in the writing styles and themes of authors in these regions. To examine this difference, I analyze two authors that have worked on a common theme: religion and in particular, the concept of hell. Evaluating the arguments put forth by …

Early Childhood Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Children’Scognitive Development And Developmentally Appropriatepedagogical Practices: Understanding The Role Of Clinicalexperiences, Courtney Beers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The quality of early caregiving and educational environments has a significant effect on children’s later cognitive outcomes. Early childhood teachers are an important determining factor in the quality of these environments. Due to inconsistencies in practice across the early childhood field, there is a call for better prepared teachers. Teacher preparation itself is criticized for its lack of innovative and effective practices. While research finds that more effective teacher preparation programs are those that are steeped in clinical practice, these types of experiences are inconsistent and fragmented in the early childhood field. Part of the issue is the lack of …
