Wheat Dockage Content: Analysis Of Dockage And Its Relation To Fusarium Head Blight, Taghrid Saleh Alhumaid Jan 2016

Wheat Dockage Content: Analysis Of Dockage And Its Relation To Fusarium Head Blight, Taghrid Saleh Alhumaid

Food Safety

Hard red spring wheat crop grown in different locations in the US were surveyed for the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). DON is often found in wheat that is infected with the plant fungal disease Fusarium head blight. The contamination of wheat by DON is a major wheat industry concern since it affects human and livestock health. Furthermore, DON reduces wheat grain yield and quality. In this study, DON was measured using gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) in 1353 HRS wheat samples collected from 2013-2015. Results indicate that there was positive significant correlation (P<0.001) between DON content and damaged kernels (0.635) and total defects (0.445). However, for the three-year average, DON content had a weak positive significant correlation (P<0.001) with the percentage of wheat dockage (0.111). Overall, DON production had an effect on kernel damage and total defects, but DON production was not impacted by the percentage of wheat dockage.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella Jan 2016

Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.

Zines In The Classroom: Critical Librarianship And Participatory Collections, Robin Potter, Alycia Sellie Jan 2016

Zines In The Classroom: Critical Librarianship And Participatory Collections, Robin Potter, Alycia Sellie

Publications and Research

This lesson plan outlines using zines in a library classroom with a critical pedagogy approach. It was written based upon the teaching each author did with the Brooklyn College Library Zine Collection.

Burnout And Depression: Two Entities Or One, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Renzo Bianchi Jan 2016

Burnout And Depression: Two Entities Or One, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Renzo Bianchi

Publications and Research

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the overlap in burnout and depression. Method: The sample comprised 1,386 schoolteachers (mean age = 43; mean years taught = 15; 77% women) from 18 different U.S. states. We assessed burnout, using the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure, and depression, using the depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire. Results: Treated dimensionally, burnout and depressive symptoms were strongly correlated (.77; disattenuated correlation, .84). Burnout and depressive symptoms were similarly correlated with each of 3 stress-related factors, stressful life events, job adversity, and workplace support. In categorical analyses, 86% of the teachers identified as …

Job Stress, Inflammation, And Atherosclerosis: A Reflection, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 2016

Job Stress, Inflammation, And Atherosclerosis: A Reflection, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Stress in general has been associated with inflammation and atherosclerosis (Sapolsky, 2004; Slavich and Irwin, 2014). The accumulation of inadequately controlled studies has become a concern (Bianchi, 2016; Schonfeld & Bianchi, 2016). Stronger efforts should be made to take into account both empirically identified and theoretically likely confounders in this research field. Assessing the contribution of job-related factors to given outcomes without simultaneously considering the role of relevant non-job factors is unwarranted. Results from inadequately controlled studies can lead to our making ineffective, or even counter-productive, decisions in terms of public health policies.

Prairie Response To Canada Thistle Infestation, And Native Forb Response To Aminocyclopyrachlor, Travis Robert Carter Jan 2016

Prairie Response To Canada Thistle Infestation, And Native Forb Response To Aminocyclopyrachlor, Travis Robert Carter

Natural Resources Management

Prairie response to Canada thistle invasion was evaluated by comparison of forage yield between aminopyralid treated and non-treated infestations in North Dakota. In general, forage production was unaffected by Canada thistle in both grazed and wildland locations. The economic threshold was 37 stems m-2 for a treatment to be cost-effective. Canada thistle should still be controlled to improve overall flora quality. The susceptibility of 10 prairie forbs to aminocyclopyrachlor at 0, 35, 70, and 105 g ha-1 was evaluated in the greenhouse. Blue flag iris was tolerant and harebell was moderately tolerant to aminocyclopyrachlor. American licorice, prairie rose, purple prairie …

Grassland Bird Response To Landscape-Level And Site-Specific Variables In The Little Missouri National Grassland, Brian James Chepulis Jan 2016

Grassland Bird Response To Landscape-Level And Site-Specific Variables In The Little Missouri National Grassland, Brian James Chepulis

Natural Resources Management

Trend analysis from the North American Breeding Bird Survey indicates that the Sprague’s pipit (Anthus spragueii) and Baird’s sparrow (Ammodramus bairdii) populations have experienced severe annual declines of -3.5% and -3.0%, respectively, between 1966 and 2013. The Little Missouri National Grassland (LMNG) in western North Dakota is listed as an important breeding area for the Sprague’s pipit, Baird’s sparrow, and other grassland birds. Our objectives for this study were to provide a better understanding of the effects of landscape-level (e.g., oil development) and site-specific (e.g., vegetation structure) variables on sensitive grassland bird populations in the LMNG. We surveyed 60 study …

Creating A Leader Development Strategy For Lay Church Plant Leaders In The Texas Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Elton Demoraes Jan 2016

Creating A Leader Development Strategy For Lay Church Plant Leaders In The Texas Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Elton Demoraes

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Texas Conference has a strong emphasis on church planting. Since 2001 more than 115 churches have been planted throughout the conference. This rapid growth was possible because 107 of those churches were started by lay planters supported by an assigned coach. However, after studying the Texas Conference Church Plant database, we discovered that only 45% have experienced growth and 55% have plateaued or are declining. It appears that the reasons for this difference may be the lack of adequate coaching and training for the lay leader to enable effective leadership in the church plant.

Methodology

A leadership development …
