A repeated-measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to evaluate change in comprehension performance from pretest to posttest, mean differences in comprehension performance between the two groups, and group differences in comprehension growth from pretest to …

The Food Pyramid : Mexicans, Agribusiness, Governments And Communities In The Midwest Migrant Stream, Katie Sutrina-Haney Jan 2016

The Food Pyramid : Mexicans, Agribusiness, Governments And Communities In The Midwest Migrant Stream, Katie Sutrina-Haney

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

As recent scholarship and even popular works and documentaries demonstrate, the United States public is largely unaware how our food ends up on our table. While some popular works found in bookstores explore where our food comes from, these works rarely analyze the role of labor and specifically the system of the migrant farmworker stream. Workers in the field make possible the complex process from the growth of produce to the selling of food to consumers. By the 1960s, communities and states in the Midwest reacted to editorialized and documented condemnation of the living and working conditions of migrant farmworkers …

The Almost-Invariant Halfspace Problem, Ben Wallis Jan 2016

The Almost-Invariant Halfspace Problem, Ben Wallis

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Let X be a complex, infinite-dimensional Banach space and T : X → X a continuous linear operator. A closed subspace Y of X such that Y and X/Y both have infinite dimension is called a halfspace. We say that Y is almost-invariant under T if there is a finite-rank linear operator F : X → X such that (T + F)Y ⊆ Y; in this case, the minimum possible rank of F is called the defect. If (T +K)Y ⊆ Y for some compact linear operator K : X → X then we say that Y is essentially-invariant under …

Jane Austen Uncensored : A Critical And Pedagogical Study Of Austen's Letters For The College Classroom, Amanda Smothers Jan 2016

Jane Austen Uncensored : A Critical And Pedagogical Study Of Austen's Letters For The College Classroom, Amanda Smothers

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A vast amount of literary critical and scholarly work on Jane Austen's writing, including her juvenilia, has been published. However, insufficient attention has been paid to her extant letters and their significance. This dissertation redresses the imbalance and is the first extensive critical, scholarly discussion of Jane Austen's correspondence and their pedagogical applications. In order to rectify the disparity, this dissertation examines Jane Austen's surviving letters to determine how to contextualize them historically and biographically and in relation to her fiction for college composition and undergraduate literature courses. Background information on letter writing in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century …

John Dos Passos And The Individual, Michael K. Yetter Jan 2016

John Dos Passos And The Individual, Michael K. Yetter

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The career of John Dos Passos, twentieth-century modernist, American fiction writer, can be separated into two distinct phases: the early liberal political writer and the late-in-life conservative Republican political writer. The entirety of Dos Passos's fiction is devoted to two topics: America and the individual. Due to the author's dramatic change in political philosophy, critics are troubled when reconciling these two phases; however, the critical consensus is that the one constant between early and later novels is his devotion to the plight of the individual. Dos Passos himself echoes this assessment. Closer examination of Dos Passos's fiction reflects that this …

Understanding Directed Self-Placement As It Relates To Student Persistence And Success, Tonya M. Troka

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Increasing college completion rates is important not only for institutions of higher learning, but also for the nation. Success in the first year and persistence to second year are vital to increasing these completion rates. One aspect of the first-year experience is placement into math, reading and writing courses. A majority of college freshman are placed using standardized placement exams that determine if they take pre-college or college-level courses. Directed self-placement (DSP) is an alternative placement method that is being utilized in lieu of standardized placement exams at a small selection of institutions within the U.S. A secondary analysis was …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Several uprisings against some long-term dictatorships in the Arab region took place during the year of 2011. The phenomenon, commonly known as the Arab Spring, started in December 2010 in Tunisia, a small North African Arabic country that was going through tough economic times. The domino effect of the Tunisian revolution spread quickly through the region. Almost all Arab countries witnessed political unrest and protests demanding reforms, but in a few of them--- Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Yemen---the situation escalated to the level of popular revolution. The Arab Spring phenomenon opened the door for studies on collective behavior and revisiting …

Machiavelli And Manhood : A Study Of Effeminacy In The "Discourses On Livy" And "Mandragola", Alyssa Morren Jan 2016

Machiavelli And Manhood : A Study Of Effeminacy In The "Discourses On Livy" And "Mandragola", Alyssa Morren

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the linkages between effeminacy and women in Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy and Mandragola. In the Discourses, Machiavelli creates a masculine ideal without sufficiently articulating the prerequisites necessary to fulfill that ideal. However, he does not hesitate to deem things that do not meet those standards as effeminate. Effeminacy is a trait that can be ascribed to things as well as people, and appears to be the antithesis of the behavior Machiavelli wants to encourage. While effeminacy typically connotes a disparagement of men as well as women, it is difficult to tell if that is indeed what Machiavelli …

Specifically, it analyzes the documents that represent a wide variety of information which circulated within the War Department's administrative networks. I connect these sources to the work of a new group of civilian agents, the premier commis, and utilize them to infer in what manner they were able to effectively manage a rapidly increasing volume of information materials and to influence state development in a profound manner. This examination found all of these sources to be increasing …

Mass Mobilization And The Breakdown Of Democratic Regimes : Egypt And Indonesia In A Comparative Perspective, Testriono Jan 2016

Mass Mobilization And The Breakdown Of Democratic Regimes : Egypt And Indonesia In A Comparative Perspective, Testriono

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Why do elite conflicts in new democratic countries produce divergent political outcomes? Under what conditions do elite conflicts lead to the survival or the breakdown of democracy? Previous studies emphasize structural, institutional, and elite factors in explaining democratic breakdown, while overlooking popular mobilization as a factor. In proposing the interaction of two variables, elite conflict and mass mobilization, this thesis argues the divergent levels of the embeddedness of mass mobilization in elite conflict during political crisis result in either the survival or the breakdown of democratic regimes. I examine Egypt and Indonesia because they underwent severe elite conflict but had …

Potent Legacies : The Transformation Of Irish American Politics, 1815-1840, Mathieu W. Billings Jan 2016

Potent Legacies : The Transformation Of Irish American Politics, 1815-1840, Mathieu W. Billings

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores what "politics" meant to Irish and Irish American Catholic laborers between 1815 and 1840. Historians have long remembered emigrants of the Emerald Isle for their political acumen during the 19th century---principally their skills in winning municipal office and mastering "machine" politics. They have not agreed, however, about when, where, and how the Irish achieved such mastery. Many scholars have argued that they obtained their political educations in Ireland under the tutelage of Daniel O'Connell, whose mass movement in the 1820s brought about Catholic Emancipation. Others have claimed that, for emigrant laborers in particular, their educations came later, …
