Data Analysis For Driving Pattern Identification And Driver's Behavior Modeling In A Freeway Work Zone, Hari Narayanan Vijaya Raghavan Nadathur
Data Analysis For Driving Pattern Identification And Driver's Behavior Modeling In A Freeway Work Zone, Hari Narayanan Vijaya Raghavan Nadathur
Masters Theses
"A variety of methods are used by Departments of Transportation (DOT) for informing drivers about upcoming work zones. One such method is work zone signage configuration. Signage plays an important role in work zones to provide guidance to drivers when conditions on the road vary from normal. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of different configurations, by law, before implementation of new signage designs that deviate from the national standards.
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is a compilation of national standards for all traffic control devices, including road markings, highway signs, and traffic signals. In …
Miscellaneous Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Delegates From 1670 To 1750, William Hamilton Bryson
Miscellaneous Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Delegates From 1670 To 1750, William Hamilton Bryson
Law Faculty Publications
In 1971, G. I. O. Duncan published a learned and useful book entitled The High Court of Delegates. This excellent treatise describes the jurisdiction, administration, procedures, and records of this court with exceptional clarity. In 2004, the substantive law of the Court of Delegates was fully and admirably expounded by R. H. Helmholz in The Oxford History of the Laws of England, Volume 1, The Canon Law and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction from 597 to the 1640s. For the next step in the study of this court to be taken, more of the source materials from this court needs to be made …
Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Chancery In The Middle Ages, William Hamilton Bryson
Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Chancery In The Middle Ages, William Hamilton Bryson
Law Faculty Publications
If the history of the law is to be properly written, it must be based upon the primary legal sources. One of the primary source materials of the law is the reports of cases. These are particularly important because here is the best evidence of the judges’ legal reasoning. The court records kept by the clerks of the courts do not give this information as, indeed, it is not their purpose to do any more than record the results of a particular lawsuit for future use. They primarily serve the purpose of res judicata; their value as judicial precedent …
Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Exchequer From 1604 To 1648, William Hamilton Bryson
Reports Of Cases In The Court Of Exchequer From 1604 To 1648, William Hamilton Bryson
Law Faculty Publications
Before the year 2000, there were in print only two modest collections of reports of cases in the Court of Exchequer dating before the accession of King George I in 1714. These are the reports of Sir Richard Lane (d. 1650) and those of Thomas Hardres (d. 1681). Combined, they cover only 28 years, and the number of cases is quite minuscule compared to the other high courts of justice at Westminster. This extreme paucity of printed materials has given a false impression of unimportance of the Court of Exchequer. While it is certainly true that this court did not …

This study aimed to analyze the profile of female Brazilian domestic workers in Massachusetts, USA, through a description of their working conditions and sel-frated health. This was a cross-sectional study of 198 domestic workers in Massachusetts, recruited with “snowball” sampling. The instrument addressed participants’ demographic characteristics, work conditions, and self-rated health. Data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0. Among the interviewees, 95.5% were women, 62.1% were 30 to 49 years of age, and 55.6% were undocumented. Documented and undocumented participants showed statistically significant differences in demographics, work conditions, …
The K-12 Funding Crisis, Kimberly J. Robinson
The K-12 Funding Crisis, Kimberly J. Robinson
Law Faculty Publications
Current discussions about K-12 education often highlight the reforms that seek to improve the quality of schooling. Some of these measures—the common-core standards, teacher evaluation, and, most recently, the Every Student Succeeds Act—undoubtedly have the potential to improve educational opportunities for students. However, what is often missing from education reform conversations is how these reforms can create sustainable changes to the education system. We believe the system's very foundations are broken, and school funding is one of the most pressing issues in need of repair.
Between Legitimacy And Control: Challenges And Recusals Of Arbitrators And Judges In International Courts And Tribunals, Chiara Giorgetti
Between Legitimacy And Control: Challenges And Recusals Of Arbitrators And Judges In International Courts And Tribunals, Chiara Giorgetti
Law Faculty Publications
Challenges of judges and arbitrators in international courts and tribunals is a vastly understudied subject. To correct this imbalance, this Article makes three novel contributions. First, and for the first time, it details and compares challenge procedures across a variety of international courts and tribunals, including both permanent and ad hoc institutions. Second, it provides unique data on challenges and provides a detailed analysis of their outcomes. Third, it makes two concrete recommendations that should be adopted as baseline requirements to improve and harmonize existing challenge procedures: (1) it proposes that an external or semi-external institution take decisions on challenges, …

The Rhetor's Audience Is Also A Fiction : A Unified Theory Of Rhetorical Situation And A Universal Example, Erica Leigh Durian
The Rhetor's Audience Is Also A Fiction : A Unified Theory Of Rhetorical Situation And A Universal Example, Erica Leigh Durian
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines rhetorical situation theory. Drawing upon previous literature ranging from the original Bitzer-Vatz-(Consigny) debate through recent genre studies on rhetorical situation, I present a modified version of rhetorical situation theory in light of the common ideas, disputes, strengths, and limitations of earlier works. I begin with a review of important literature in Chapter Two in order to illustrate both the similarities and differences in other theories. Then, in Chapter Three, I discuss the importance of audience, particularly fictional audiences, to the rhetorical situation. I present a modified version of rhetorical situation theory in Chapter Four and illustrate the …
Publish Or Perish : Linguistic Policies And The Picard Language Of France, Marcy Taylor Kersch
Publish Or Perish : Linguistic Policies And The Picard Language Of France, Marcy Taylor Kersch
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The rise of the French language from dialect to standard has shared the same trajectory as the French nation. But to postulate "une nation, une langue" is to discount the survival of the various regional languages that exist within metropolitan France. Regional languages, in spite of claims otherwise, are alive, albeit not always well. This thesis will focus specifically on the Picard language spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. Picard and French can be described as collateral languages, sharing a common origin but developing differently into two distinct languages, each with its own unique morphological, syntactical, and lexical characteristics. …
Dancing With Mnemic Neglect : New Insights Into The Paradigm, Bettina Zengel
Dancing With Mnemic Neglect : New Insights Into The Paradigm, Bettina Zengel
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Self-protection motivation is seen as a cause of the mnemic neglect phenomenon, the reduced recall for self-threatening information as compared to other-referent negative information. The phenomenon is well established, but there are still many areas that would benefit from further exploration. For example, while several moderators of the mnemic neglect phenomenon have been found, regulatory focus has not yet been considered. Furthermore, the assumed cognitive processes that underlie the mnemic neglect phenomenon are generally seen as occurring because of processes occurring during the encoding phase of information processing. However, it is possible that recall processes that occur after information storage …
Demographic Characteristics As Predictors For Early Program Success, On-Time Completion, And Nclex-Rn Success In A Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Program, Nancy Petges
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the extent to which selected demographic characteristics (nontraditional student, English as a second language [ESL], male student, and first generation student) predict early-program success, successful on-time completion, and NCLEX-RN success in baccalaureate nursing education for a sample of students at a Midwestern university. To determine the relationships among study variables, correlational analysis was used. Logistic regression was utilized to examine the relationship of the predictive variables (nontraditional student, ESL student, male student, and first-generation student) to the outcome variables (early-program success, successful on-time completion, and NCLEX-RN success). In addition, descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency (mean, …
Resistant Acts : Challenges Of Older And Chronically Ill Mexican Women Living In 21st-Century United States, Lucy Sosa
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Older and chronically ill Mexican women living in a 21st century working class neighborhood confront many challenges. The challenge of being older and chronically ill are exacerbated by the multiple socially constructed identities of difference they embody, such as, race, gender, class, linguistic competence, immigration and educational status. In their search for health and wellbeing, these embodied differences constructed for the women a number of care-searching, care-receiving and health outcome experiences that reveal the effect these differences can have in the lives of members of a vulnerable population. The women's experiences also reveal their determination to gain access to affordable, …

Why Do We Need To Learn This? : An Investigation Of The Association Between Science Teachers' Use Of Utility Value Statements And Students' Immediate And Global Perceptions Of Science Utility, Stephen Spaulding Kafkas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Science teachers have many opportunities to influence their students' science utility value beliefs throughout the course of their instruction. However, many of them refrain from making statements regularly about the usefulness of the content they are teaching, and it is unclear how effective such statements are in influencing student beliefs. This study examined the week-to-week and global relationship between five dimensions of teachers' utility value statements (frequency, clarity, target, purpose, and temporality) and their students' utility value beliefs. The week-to-week relationship was assessed by the clarity of utility value expressed in six essays students produced. More global changes in students' …

"Anonymous" And Frame Construction In Social Media, Justin Yates
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Social movement organizations operate and communicate using new mediums, such as the use of social media. Anonymous is a non-hierarchical online activist group with unidentified members that engages in exploiting technology toward politically motivated goals. This study examined how a group without formal structure or identifiable members frames its activities as "righteous." Specifically, this study examined the rhetoric of a non-hierarchical online activist group with unidentified members and how it frames its activities as just. This study explored the challenges in maintaining and creating righteous rhetoric for a group with online, non-hierarchical, and unidentified members. Using social movement framing theory …

This study investigated the relationship between fifth grade students' computer-adaptive assessment performance (TAP) scores when a computer-adaptive eLearning platform was assigned for homework along with a self-regulated learning (SRL) treatment intervention. The adaptive learning theoretical model and the TAP conceptual framework supported the rationale for the utilization of the digital computer-adaptive systems of learning and assessing. In addition, the study examined the predictive ability of the Measures Strategy Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) a self-reporting survey on MAP assessment performance scores. The theory of SRL provided the foundation for the strategies implemented in this study. The participants consisted of three fifth-grade classes …
A Bird For The Ages : National Concupiscence In The Work Of John Milton, Doug Depalma
A Bird For The Ages : National Concupiscence In The Work Of John Milton, Doug Depalma
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the religious concept of concupiscence in the work of John Milton from Comus to Samson Agonistes with a special focus on Milton's political tracts and histories. I suggest in readings of Comus, Eikonoklastes, and The Ready and Easy Way that we find Milton interacting with concupiscence in a different way as his experiences in the British Commonwealth advanced. In the Comus we find Milton willing to forgive the concupiscent Lady, yet in Eikonoklastes and The Ready and Easy Way, Milton describes the "thralls" that dominate his later prose work in a keenly concupiscent manner such that the …

A Covert War At Sea : Piracy And Political Economy In Malaya, 1824-1874, Scott C. Abel
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Piracy around the Malay Peninsula during the 19th century was extraordinarily prevalent and resulted in the death and loss of liberty for an untold number of people. This essay examines the connections between the piracy of this era and the political economies of the Straits Settlements and the Malay states in the region. Malays pirates often had the support of local rulers who required the goods and slaves brought back by pirates to reinforce their own political and socio-economic positions. The piratical system supported by the rulers was a component of the overall Malay economic system known as kerajaan economics, …
Altering State Intolerance Of Uncertainty And Its Influence On Checking Behavior, Hannah Faleer
Altering State Intolerance Of Uncertainty And Its Influence On Checking Behavior, Hannah Faleer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous mental disorder characterized by the presence of obsessions and compulsions that can have debilitating effects on the lives of individuals affected by it. Whereas obsessions and compulsions can fixate on nearly any subject, they tend to cluster around certain themes (e.g., cleaning, checking, symmetry). From a cognitive-behavioral perspective, certain dysfunctional beliefs or attitudes are believed to contribute to the etiology and maintenance of OCD. One of these beliefs is intolerance of uncertainty (IU), the tendency for an individual to avoid ambiguous situations and view him or herself as unable to cope in the face …
An Analysis Of The Great Melting Pot In American World War Ii Propaganda : Germans, Japanese, And Italians Need Not Apply, Crystal Sturgeon
An Analysis Of The Great Melting Pot In American World War Ii Propaganda : Germans, Japanese, And Italians Need Not Apply, Crystal Sturgeon
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This research studied the implications of the metaphor of the American melting pot and how those implications can be seen even today. The main artifacts are propaganda from World War II, specifically The Ducktators, Der Fuehrer's Face, and a propaganda poster. I also consider the modern day image of the salad bowl and examine how a great deal of the xenophobia and ethnic prejudice in World War II is still alive and well, although perhaps in a slightly different form and focused on different groups. I also examine the rhetorical devices used in World War II propaganda and how they …
Differences Among Subgroups In Concurrent And Predictive Validity Of Timed Oral Reading Fluency Measures And Informal Reading Inventories On Performance On Computer Adaptive Assessments Of Reading, Paul J. Perry
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Recent legislation such as No Child Left Behind and the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) increasingly pressure teachers and schools to be accountable for instructional time in the form of improved test scores. As a result, students are given an increasing variety of assessments in a given school year in an attempt to measure academic growth over time. These assessments frequently occur in the form of curriculum-based measures (CBM) of oral reading fluency, informal reading inventories (IRIs), computer adaptive tests (CATs) of reading, and annual high stakes assessments of reading ability. While a review of the literature reveals a well-established …

Do Anxious Applicants Become Lower Performing Employees?, Elora C. Voyles
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Numerous studies have found that anxious applicants perform less well in interviews and subsequently receive lower ratings and are less likely to be hired compared to non-anxious applicants. However, no studies have yet examined if applicants who are anxious during the interview subsequently perform less well on the job compared to non-anxious applicants. In this laboratory study, work task performances of participants who appear anxious and/or report anxiety during simulated interviews were compared to those who did not appear anxious and/or did not report anxiety. The results of this study showed that interview anxiety was negatively related to interview performance; …

Clerics In Arms : Militant Catholicism And Religious Violence In France, 1584-1598, Gregory D. Bereiter
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the participation of Catholic clergy in religious violence and sectarian conflict at the height of the French Wars of Religion, a series of protracted armed conflicts that ravaged the kingdom of France between 1562 and 1629. It aims to produce a cultural history of clerical militancy at the height of these disastrous wars, when a "Holy League" of extremist Catholics formed across France with the twin goals of eradicating French Protestantism and preventing the crown from passing to a Protestant "heretic," Henri de Navarre. The dissertation investigates the violent practices of militant Catholic clergy in the 1580s …
