Parental Experience-Based Change: Positive And Negative Changes In Monitoring, Expectations, Nurturing, And Discipline, Joseph S. Rand

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to create a measure of parent's perceptions of parental experience-based change (PEBC), or parents' perceptions of the changes they make to their parenting of secondborn children as a result of experiences with firstborn children. The measure assessed PEBC in the domains of monitoring, expectations, nurturing and discipline. Participants were 401 mothers or fathers of 2 or 3 adolescent children. Factor analyses revealed an 8 factor solution that assessed increasing and decreasing in each of the 4 domains. Criterion validity was evaluated using regression analyses to examine the relationships between each factor and parenting outcomes thought to be …

An Analysis Of Reflective Thinking In Teacher Candidates' Eportfolios, Cristina Salinas-Grandy Dec 2016

An Analysis Of Reflective Thinking In Teacher Candidates' Eportfolios, Cristina Salinas-Grandy

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Preparing the next generation of teachers to prepare students for the 21st Century is a challenging endeavor. Teacher candidates need to possess critical thinking and evidence-based pedagogical skills. It is believed that teacher reflection is the cornerstone to making informed decisions and timely modifications to daily instruction (Cochran-Smith, & Zeichner, K. 2005, Darling-Hammond, L. & Bransford, J., 2005 NBPTS, 2014; Schon, 1987;). What has been less examined is how an ePortfolio can be utilized as a tool to aid in the development of reflection among teacher candidates. This case study significantly contributes to our understanding of how to develop reflective …

The Case For Cultural Proficiency For Teachers Of Students Of Color Who Live In Poverty: A Policy Advocacy Document, Perry A. Finch Dec 2016

The Case For Cultural Proficiency For Teachers Of Students Of Color Who Live In Poverty: A Policy Advocacy Document, Perry A. Finch

Dissertations

This document explores how expanding educators’ cultural proficiency leads to increased learning opportunities for students of color who live in poverty. Through the development of culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, teachers might increase their abilities to meet the needs of previously disenfranchised students. A connection exists between differentiated instruction and culturally responsive instruction, as both require a heightened understanding of students’ schema, interests, and culture. This policy argues that increasing educators’ cultural proficiency should not be done simply to increase teacher effectiveness with instruction but rather because it is a moral obligation of schools.

Understanding The Effects Of Summer School, Technology, And 21st Century Skills On Student Academics, Jennifer Camilleri

Dissertations

District XYZ has hosted traditional summer school for more than 20 years to assist students not quite ready to advance to the next grade. The district has become more diverse, and many students end the school year without solid mastery of that grade’s objectives. Therefore, summer school is a pivotal time for these students who have not mastered the grade-level content to gain a solid foundation before moving on to the next grade. Because of both the changing needs of the district’s student population and the relatively short amount of time in which summer school occurs, technological tools that can …

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

The problems related to oil transportation are considered of the largest burdens that hinder the petroleum industry. Since the transportation of oil is mostly done using oil carrying vehicles or cargos, a system for monitoring those vehicles and tracking their position is needed. In this work a GPS based tracking and monitoring system will be presented. Moreover, the system will be able to store data about different parameters in regard to the cargo, and it will send that data using GSM networks by GPRS technology. In addition to that, this system is designed to be ambient intelligent by the means …

Robotic Arm Tracing Curves Recognized By Camera, Timothy Karl Findling Dec 2016

Robotic Arm Tracing Curves Recognized By Camera, Timothy Karl Findling

Theses and Dissertations

Applications such like soldering require robot arms to follow the soldering line as present on a surface. We assume here that the surface to be soldered is remote from the robotic arm, that the soldering is performed via a laser beam, and that the line to be followed can be a curve that may self-intersect (e.g. a crack in the material). We describe research conducted using a robotic arm pointing a laser for tracing a remote line on a smooth surface. The image of the line is converted to a one pixel width skeleton line generated from images using a …

Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh Dec 2016

Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh

Theses and Dissertations

Missiles and launch vehicle are trending towards becoming more slender in shape to reduce aerodynamic drag. Bending vibrations of the rocket body occur when a flying object with a large slenderness performs pitch or yaw command. The onboard Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) measures the attitude and the angular velocities of the deflected body as well as the rigid body motion and in turn feeds these signals back to the control loop. Feedback of the vibrating information degrades the control system stability and in the worst case makes the system unstable. These effects become more significant when the slenderness ratio of …

Improving Transitions Of Care From Hospital To Community Provider For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Laura Dale Thompson Dec 2016

Improving Transitions Of Care From Hospital To Community Provider For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Laura Dale Thompson

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Poorly coordinated care transitions result in nearly half of discharged patients’ experiencing at least 1 medication error and 1 in 5 Medicare beneficiaries readmitted within 30 days. Repercussions of suboptimal transitions of care greatly impact the nation’s economy costing between $12 billion and $44 billion annually. Ineffective handoffs between providers at hospital discharge contribute to suboptimal patient outcomes; therefore, strategies to improve transitions of care are necessary to provide quality care while decreasing health care expenditure. A quality improvement project was conducted on an inpatient surgical unit to decrease hospital readmissions and emergency department visits. Proposed interventions for patients with …

The Effects Of Shade On Growth, Development And Yield Of A Primocane Fruiting Blackberry, ‘Prime-Ark 45’ To Extend The Market Season, Olivia C. Caillouet

Horticulture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the effects of shade on ‘Prime-Ark 45’ blackberries (Rubus spp.) in greenhouse (GH) and field (FD) experiments aimed at improving fruit production in the southern United States Ozark Plateau region. Primocane blackberry production in the southern United States is limited in acreage of production as well as low yields by high temperatures during the bloom and early fruiting period, resulting in poor fruit set and poor fruit quality. Shade may have the potential to delay bloom and flowering to a more favorable season or by reducing temperatures that cause a poor fruit set and quality. Both …

The Influence Of Resin Rich Volumes On The Mechanical Properties Of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites, Grant Lewin Dec 2016

The Influence Of Resin Rich Volumes On The Mechanical Properties Of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites, Grant Lewin

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Glass fibre composite plates were manufactured using several methods to promote increasing levels of fibre volume fraction (Vf), inversely leading to a lower residual resin content and theoretically smaller resin rich volumes (RRV). The aim of this project is to determine the effect of resin rich volumes on the mechanical properties tested and whether they scale with the increase in Vf. Five test plates were manufactured, the first using hand-lamination (HL) with three further plates produced using resin infusion (RI), with infusion occurring under consolidation pressures of 300, 600 and 900mbar. The fifth plate was infused under full vacuum, ~1000mbar …

End-Of-Life Recycling Options For Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymers, Shannon Hall Dec 2016

End-Of-Life Recycling Options For Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymers, Shannon Hall

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This report covers the possible recycling options for end-of-life glass fibre reinforced polymers. Two forms (jigsaw and diamond bladed wet saw) of composite size reduction were compared to determine the most viable option. It was determined that the use of a jigsaw is essential due to its portability and low cost; being ≈36% less than the cost of the wet saw. Incineration with fibre recovery was performed at six different temperatures to determine which was the best to achieve complete resin decomposition. It was found that the most effective temperature, in terms of cost, burn-off time and effectiveness was 500°C. …

Modelling The Response Of Phytoplankton To Mesoscale And Submesoscale Processes At The Sub-Antarctic Front, Zoë E. Waring Dec 2016

Modelling The Response Of Phytoplankton To Mesoscale And Submesoscale Processes At The Sub-Antarctic Front, Zoë E. Waring

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This study extends a basic NPZ (Nutrient, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton) model to investigate the impact of turbulence on phytoplankton growth. Despite recent studies suggesting that submesoscale dynamics are crucial for the transfer of energy and nutrients across eddies, there are relatively few in situ studies and none, before now, at the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF) to the East of Drake Passage. This study draws on data collected at the SAF and predictions made by the model to give an insight into the processes governing phytoplankton growth across a cold core mesoscale eddy. Conductivity, temperature, nutrient and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) measurements were used to …

The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Potential Of Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) Nanoparticles On Human Sh-Sy5y Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Rebecca Allen Dec 2016

The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Potential Of Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) Nanoparticles On Human Sh-Sy5y Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Rebecca Allen

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are one of the most commonly used nanomaterials. They are used in plastics, sunscreens, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and the food industry due to their photocatalytic properties, high refractive index and generally unreactive nature. Their vast range of applications, and hence potential exposure to humans, raises concern over the safety of the nanomaterial. TiO2 nanoparticles have been extensively studied; however, their toxic effect on humans is still poorly understood, particularly the adverse effects they may have on the nervous system. In vivo studies have shown that TiO2 nanoparticles are able to enter the brain via circulation …

Factors Affecting The Quantity Of Social Interactions And Aggression In Captive Group Housed Asiatic Black Bears (Ursus Thibetanus), Lianne Ottewell Dec 2016

Factors Affecting The Quantity Of Social Interactions And Aggression In Captive Group Housed Asiatic Black Bears (Ursus Thibetanus), Lianne Ottewell

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This study observed a group of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) in a captive environment that differs greatly to standard zoological institutions. Rather than being housed alone or with one other, as is typical in captivity, two large groups of bears consisting of 24 individuals were observed in two different enclosures. Any instance of social behaviour was noted down, both positive and negative, to determine the extent to which social relationships form and whether these animals have the capacity to live in large groups, regardless of their supposed solitary nature. The results indicated that the duration of social interactions were …

Callosal Connectivity And Interhemispheric Bilateral Advantage: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study, Sophie Clarke Dec 2016

Callosal Connectivity And Interhemispheric Bilateral Advantage: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study, Sophie Clarke

The Plymouth Student Scientist

There is wide acknowledgement that the cerebral hemispheres do not operate in isolation when processing complex visual stimuli (Singh, 2000; Schulte & Muller-Oehring, 2010). Patterns of interhemispheric communication are believed to be integral to such cognitive abilities, yet the circumstances under which communication takes place and the nature of information being processed is poorly understood. This experiment addresses the role of interhemispheric communication regarding inter-individual differences in underlying white matter (WM) relating to the matching facial identity. Several studies have already documented the role of WM in processing abilities such as with differences in gender, age and disease (Schulte & …

Fugro Seacore: Airlift Pump Modelling Proposal, Matthew Hobson Dec 2016

Fugro Seacore: Airlift Pump Modelling Proposal, Matthew Hobson

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This Project reviews options available to Fugro Seacore (fugro), an over water drilling contractor, for predicting the operability of Airlift pumps. This is particular a problem during projects conducted from Jack-Up Barges in areas with large tidal ranges. By reviewing literature and attempting to construct both mathematical and CFD models it is concluded that CFD is too complex for the speed of calculation Fugro require when tendering for projects. In literature a mathematical model is found however further work will be needed to ensure this can be applied to Fugro’s large scale pumps. This is because while Fugro operate in …
