Inter-Color Npr Lines: A Comparison Of Rendering Techniques, Donald G. Herring Dec 2016

Inter-Color Npr Lines: A Comparison Of Rendering Techniques, Donald G. Herring

Open Access Theses

Renders of 3D scenes can feature lines drawn automatically along sharp edges between colored areas on object textures, in order to imitate certain conventional styles of hand-drawn line art. However, such "inter-color lines" have been studied very little. Two algorithms for rendering these lines were compared in this study - a faster one utilizing lines baked into the textures themselves and a more complex one that dynamically generated the lines in image space on each frame - for the purpose of determining which of the two better imitated traditional, hand-drawn art styles and which was more visually appealing. Test subjects …

The Impact Of Moving From Two-Person To Four-Person Teams On Seventh-Grade Students’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards School, Zachary B. Sedgwick Dec 2016

The Impact Of Moving From Two-Person To Four-Person Teams On Seventh-Grade Students’ Attitudes And Beliefs Towards School, Zachary B. Sedgwick

All NMU Master's Theses

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the impact moving seventh-grade students from two-person to four-person teams had on students’ attitudes and beliefs towards school. The review of literature provided the reader a brief analysis of the history of the middle school philosophy and teaming, recommendations for schools to address the unique needs of early adolescents, a review of key literature regarding middle level programing and structure, and a discussion highlighting the importance and impact of smaller learning communities. Two main theories makeup the framework for this report: Social Cognitive Theory and Human Relations Theory. The …

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer Dec 2016

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer

All NMU Master's Theses

The P300 subcomponent, P3b, is an event related potential detected at the scalp surface when a working memory comparison results in differences between the contents of working memory and incoming stimulus information. Previous research has indicated that as infrequent targets become more difficult to detect (morphologically similar to a frequent non-target stimulus) the P300 becomes attenuated. fMRI research has also indicated increased prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during P300 generation. To examine the relationship between P3b amplitude and PFC activity participants performed an easy and difficult target detection task in both EEG and NIRS called the oddball. The EEG and behavioral …

Effective School Leadership Practices In Schools With Positive Climates In The Age Of High-Stakes Teacher Evaluations, Kristina M. Hansen Dec 2016

Effective School Leadership Practices In Schools With Positive Climates In The Age Of High-Stakes Teacher Evaluations, Kristina M. Hansen

All NMU Master's Theses

The purpose of this research project was to understand the leadership practices and characteristics of school leaders within schools identified as having a positive school climate. In this qualitative study, three focus groups of teachers were interviewed and asked a series of questions about their principals’ professional practices and characteristics. The building principals from these schools were also interviewed individually. These responses were scripted and analyzed using an open-coding model and then compared to recent educational leadership literature. Key findings from this research include professional practices and characteristics of principals in schools with positive climate, as well as recommendations for …

Minor Transnational Writing In Ireland, Borbála Faragó Dec 2016

Minor Transnational Writing In Ireland, Borbála Faragó

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Minor Transnational Writing in Ireland" Borbála Faragó investigates the poetic work of some of Ireland's migrant writers through the lens of minor transnationalism. Ireland's peculiar migration history where there are two quite distinct groups of inward migrants, requires careful rethinking of terminology. Faragó proposes to circumnavigate the binary approach of investigating center versus periphery and instead look for lateral connections between marginalized groups. Reading the works of Ireland's internal others brings to the fore issues of authenticity, ethics, and identity that can foreground some of the ambiguities inherent in transnational studies today. Interpreting the oeuvre of these …

Uas Surveillance Criticality, Kyle Snyder, William Semke, Jim Gregory, Michael Wing, Mohammad Moallemi, J. W. Bruce

Aviation Faculty Publications

The integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace system (NAS) poses considerable challenges. Maintaining human safety is perhaps chief among these challenges as UAS remote pilots will need to interact with other UAS, piloted aircraft, and other conditions associated with flight. A research team of 6 leading UAS research universities was formed to respond to a set of surveillance criticality research questions. Five analysis tools were selected following a literature review to evaluate airborne surveillance technology performance. The analysis tools included: Fault Trees, Monte Carlo Simulations, Hazard Analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), and Human-in-the-Loop Simulations. The Surveillance …

Designing A Datawarehousing And Business Analytics Course Using Experiential Learning Pedagogy, Gottipati Swapna, Venky Shankararaman Dec 2016

Designing A Datawarehousing And Business Analytics Course Using Experiential Learning Pedagogy, Gottipati Swapna, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Experiential learning refers to learning from experience or learning by doing. Universities have explored various forms for implementing experiential learning such as apprenticeships, internships, cooperative education, practicums, service learning, job shadowing, fellowships and community activities. However, very little has been done in systematically trying to integrate experiential learning to the main stream academic curriculum. Over the last two years, at the authors’ university, a new program titled UNI-X was launched to achieve this. Combining academic curriculum with experiential learning pedagogy, provides a challenging environment for students to use their disciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle real world problems and issues …

Directly Comparing Handoff Protocols For Pediatric Hospitalists, Elizabeth H. Lazzara, Robert Riss, Brady Patzer, Dustin C. Smith, Y. Raymond Chan, Joseph R. Keebler, Sarah D. Fouquet, Evan M. Palmer

Publications

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Handoff protocols are often developed by brainstorming and consensus, and few are directly compared. We hypothesized that a handoff protocol (Flex 11) developed using a rigorous methodology would be more favorable in terms of clinicians’ attitudes, behaviors, cognitions, or time-on-task when performing handoffs compared with a prevalent protocol (Situation Background Assessment Recommendation [SBAR]).

METHODS: Using a between-groups, randomized control trial design (Flex 11 versus SBAR) during a pilot study in a simulated environment, 20 clinicians (13 attending physicians and 7 residents) received 3 patient handoffs from a standardized physician, managed the patients, and handed off the patients …

Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams Dec 2016

Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams

Research Papers

Generations of readers have bought and shared space inside the wedding pages in newspapers, and the introduction of same-sex wedding announcements has not always been granted immediate access. Although polls show same-sex marriage has become more generally accepted by society, the lifestyle and complete inclusion have been perceived as being directly challenged by newspaper policies and legislative efforts to pass religious freedom restoration acts. This paper explores the history of the wedding lifestyles pages, the evolution of media coverage surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and the recent wave of a religious freedom restoration act in Indiana and …

Developing An Abac-Based Grant Proposal Workflow Management System, Milson Munakami Dec 2016

Developing An Abac-Based Grant Proposal Workflow Management System, Milson Munakami

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In the advent of the digital transformation, online business processes need to be automated and modeled as workflows. A workflow typically involves a sequence of coordinated tasks and shared data that need to be secured and protected from unauthorized access. In other words, a workflow can be described simply as the movement of documents and activities through a business process among different users. Such connected flow of information among various users with different permission level offers many benefits along with new challenges. Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated as skilled and motivated attackers both insiders and outsiders are equipped with …
