Effects Of Service-Learning On Kinesiology Students' Attitudes Toward Children With Disabilities, José Santiago, Jihyun Lee, Emily Roper
Effects Of Service-Learning On Kinesiology Students' Attitudes Toward Children With Disabilities, José Santiago, Jihyun Lee, Emily Roper
Faculty Publications
Contact theory (Allport, 1954) served as the framework to investigate undergraduate kinesiology students’ attitudes toward children with disabilities after a service-learning (SL) experience. Fifty-one undergraduate kinesiology students enrolled in an adapted physical education (APE) course served as the experimental group, and 31 undergraduate kinesiology students enrolled in an introductory kinesiology course served as the control group. The Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale–Form A (Yuker, Block, & Younng, 1970) was administered at three different times: before, during, and after the SL. A mixed-design ANOVA revealed that there were no statistically significant main or interaction effects for gender, group, and time on …
Frit-Core Beads In North America, Karlis Karklins
Frit-Core Beads In North America, Karlis Karklins
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Among the earliest European beads to reach North America is a distinctive group generally referred to in the archaeological literature as frit-core or frit-cored, so called because their interiors consist of sintered sand rather than solid glass. Likely produced in France, they are restricted to northeastern North America and have short temporal ranges, making them ideal chronological indicators for the latter part of the 16th century and the very early 17th century.

The Fichtelgebirge Bead And Button Industry Of Bavaria, Karlis Karklins, Sibylle Jargstorf, Gerhard Zeh, Laure Dussubieux
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Venice and Bohemia are generally considered to be the principal bead manufacturers of Europe. Yet Germany, especially the Fichtelgebirge region of northeastern Bavaria, produced large quantities of glass beads for the world market beginning in the 15th century, if not even earlier, and continued to do so well into the 20th century. The Fichtelgebirge industry is especially notable for two things: 1) the utilization of furnace-winding technology which, based on our current knowledge, was not employed to a significant degree elsewhere in Europe during the post-medieval period, and 2) the localized use of Proterobas, a greenish igneous rock, to produce …
Beads At The Place Of White Earth - Late Neolithic And Early Chalcolithic Aktopraklık, Northwestern Turkey, Emma L. Baysal
Beads At The Place Of White Earth - Late Neolithic And Early Chalcolithic Aktopraklık, Northwestern Turkey, Emma L. Baysal
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The site of Aktopraklık in northwestern Turkey was inhabited during the Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic periods, from the mid-7th to mid-6th millennia B.C. The site lies in a region that came to link Anatolia with Europe through the introduction of early farming practices and has already provided much information about the groups which inhabited the area along with their domesticated plants and animals. Although scientific techniques have led to recent breakthroughs in our understanding of the dynamics of change in the region, it is material culture that continues to form the foundation of archaeological research into daily life. Aktopraklık …

Are Strong States Key To Reducing Violence? A Test Of Pinker, Ryan Murphy
Are Strong States Key To Reducing Violence? A Test Of Pinker, Ryan Murphy
Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research
STEVEN PINKER CLAIMS in The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011) that nearly all social-scientific evidence tells us violence is declining. This paper makes no claims against Pinker’s main argument; criticisms of it having been addressed elsewhere (Pinker 2015). However, one secondary hypothesis Pinker puts forward is that the development of strong states was a key factor in the decline of violence (2011, 42). Summarizing his reading of the evidence, Pinker writes, “[t]he reduction of homicide by government control is so obvious to anthropologists that they seldom document it with numbers… It goes without saying that people that have been …

Socialization To Academic Language In A Kindergarten Classroom, Colleen E. Gallagher
Socialization To Academic Language In A Kindergarten Classroom, Colleen E. Gallagher
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Recognizing the importance of academic language for students’ success in schools, this article reports on an investigation of how narrative-focused literacy events in the classroom provide opportunities for academic language socialization. Data were collected from one public elementary school in a major metropolitan area in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Participants include an intact kindergarten class of 16 students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and their teacher. The results of the investigation revealed that sharing time provides opportunities for socialization to academic register through: (1) requiring that students successfully navigate the academic language demands of the interaction, …
Boundary Formation And Cultural Construction: How Do Chinese Andindian Immigrant Converts Understand Religious Identity?, Di Di
Sociology
Most scholars study immigrants' religious lives in a vacuum, paying little attention to the religious lives of people who switch from one religious tradition to another. This article relies on interviews with Chinese and Indian immigrant converts in the U.S. to provide a unique comparative perspective on the religious lives of Asian immigrant converts, with a specific focus on their identity construction processes. Findings indicate that Chinese and Indian immigrants establish different types of boundaries, but form similar cultural content within their identities. I debunk the assumption in existing theories that religious conversion is an either/or transition.

Art Above 66° 33', Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois
2016-2017
66˚ 33' is the latitude of the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, and this exhibition considers these geographic areas as inspiration for the visual arts. In addition, it utilizes the visual arts as a mode by which to encourage viewers to more deeply engage with the planet’s most northerly and southerly regions. It considers the issues, history and environment of the regions, spanning media, process and subject – from the figural to the abstract, tactile to sound, analog to digital.
This exhibition was a collaboration with the Augustana Center for Polar Studies.

Exiles Of Heteronormativity: Queer Reproduction And Female Same-Sex Families In Singapore, Nur Adlina B. Maulod
Exiles Of Heteronormativity: Queer Reproduction And Female Same-Sex Families In Singapore, Nur Adlina B. Maulod
Open Access Dissertations
In Singapore, same-sex desires and practices are treated as antithetical to the Family. This dissertation challenges the rhetorical monolith of the traditional family by documenting intimate stories of alternative reproduction from the experiences of female citizens who have been treated as exiles of heteronormative kinship.

Defining America: Chicano/Latino Influence, Hope Jackson-Doney
2016 Symposium
With the 2016 Presidential Elections, immigration has become a hot topic of discussion among the presidential candidates as they debate what actions to take with respect to undocumented population residing in the United States. This study examines the ways in which Latina/os and immigrants have defined and redefined the American culture. Using peer review academic sources, this work explores the cultural development of Latina/os in the United States and how this group constitutes a critical foundation of American society. This works illustrates how the United States is known as the melting pot of cultures for many generations and Latina/o immigrants …

Dental Fluorosis And Fluoride In Consumable Products, Katarina Wasley
Dental Fluorosis And Fluoride In Consumable Products, Katarina Wasley
2016 Symposium
The question on whether on fluoride should be added to consumable products has already been a topic of discussion; one criticism that has been offered to the use of fluoride is the incidence of dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is when the enamel has, in its mild forms, either visible white spots, flecks, or streaks. Dental fluorosis is caused by the overconsumption of fluoride during the developmental stage of the permanent tooth’s enamel. The fluoride that can cause this can come from multiple sources, including such sources as drinking water (either naturally occurring or as an additive), dental products that contain …
Book Review Of Anthony Corbeill: Sexing The World: Grammatical Gender And Biological Sex In Ancient Rome, Matthew P. Loar
Book Review Of Anthony Corbeill: Sexing The World: Grammatical Gender And Biological Sex In Ancient Rome, Matthew P. Loar
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Why is patria (“fatherland”) a feminine noun? How is it that virtus (“courage”), though etymologically linked with the masculine vir, is also a feminine noun? And more vexingly, what is it about a book (liber) that makes it masculine instead of, say, neuter? When first-year Latin students ask these sorts of questions, our immediate impulse is to reassure them that grammatical gender is just that—grammatical. Trying to divine some underlying sexual characteristic that makes courage feminine or a book masculine is not only futile but also counterproductive to early language learning. As I tell my own students: …
