Rituals And Performance In Gastronomy, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau Jan 2016

Rituals And Performance In Gastronomy, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

I would like to explore, in this paper, the performative and ritualistic aspects of gastronomy and sharing meals. Because eating is something we have to do quite often, it is filled with a social function that is very culture dependent. At the same time, in every culture, we find some performative and ritualistic elements associated with eating and sharing a meal.

In this paper, I will interrogate the performative and ritualistic aspects of family meals as well as meals that have a function like a meeting or a reunion. In a second part, I will explore how some chefs articulate …

Fostering Campus Diversity And Advancing The Internationalization Of Education On College And University Campuses, Sherwood Thompson, Timothy Forde Jan 2016

Fostering Campus Diversity And Advancing The Internationalization Of Education On College And University Campuses, Sherwood Thompson, Timothy Forde

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper discusses the challenges that institutions of higher education face in educating and preparing students to work and live in an increasingly diverse global population. This concept-oriented discussion does not intend to provide detailed theoretical or experimental development and analysis. Instead, this paper presents an innovative paradigm that attempts to embrace many nuances associated with the terms diversity and globalization in the literature. The paper posits the internationalization of education as a strategy that can help universities demonstrate their commitment to educating students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Other strategies include targeted recruiting of highly competent international faculty …

Establishing Waist-To-Height Ratio Standards From Criterion-Referenced Bmi Using Roc Curves In Low-Income Children, Ryan D. Burns, Timothy A. Brusseau, Yi Fang, You Fu, James C. Hannon Jan 2016

Establishing Waist-To-Height Ratio Standards From Criterion-Referenced Bmi Using Roc Curves In Low-Income Children, Ryan D. Burns, Timothy A. Brusseau, Yi Fang, You Fu, James C. Hannon

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to establish health-related waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) cut-points associating with FITNESSGRAM’s body mass index (BMI) criterion-referenced standards in low-income children. A secondary aim was to examine the classification agreement between the derived WHtR cut-points and various cardiometabolic blood markers using current recommendations. Participants were 219 children from low-income schools (mean age = 10.5 ± 0.6 years). Waist circumference, height, weight, and cardiometabolic blood markers were collected in a fasting state before school hours. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine WHtR cut-points that associated with a child meeting FITNESSGRAM’s age- and sex-specific criterionreferenced …

Tradition With A Capital "T": The Value Of Campus Traditions, Morgan K. Morris Jan 2016

Tradition With A Capital "T": The Value Of Campus Traditions, Morgan K. Morris

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

This study explored the value of campus traditions in higher education. Literature regarding tradition and campus traditions has answered the question “what is tradition?”, analyzed the emphasis on tradition in the Southern United States, and investigated the role of tradition in higher education. This original research sought to survey student, personnel, and general perceptions of the value of campus traditions in higher education through a qualitative, phenomenological approach focused on a single campus tradition. In order to obtain a holistic perspective, the researcher conducted a review of archival resources and interviews with students, faculty, staff, and administrators connected to the …

Bones Don’T Lie: Historical And Forensic Comparisons Of Wellesley College’S Human Skeletal Anatomy Teaching Collection, Isabel Starr Jan 2016

Bones Don’T Lie: Historical And Forensic Comparisons Of Wellesley College’S Human Skeletal Anatomy Teaching Collection, Isabel Starr

Honors Thesis Collection

Combining archival research and osteological data collected from skulls in the Wellesley College human skeletal anatomy teaching collection, we investigate how the composition of individuals’ age, sex, and ancestral background compares with and exists in relation to other skeletal anatomy teaching collections of the early 20th century. Archival research at Wellesley College and the Ward Archives at the University of Rochester shows that the Wellesley collection was most likely compiled through a variety of purchases and donations between 1870 and 1956, with two major purchases in 1914 and 1916. Through analysis of metric and nonmetric cranial data in FORDISC, we …

The Victim/Perpetrator Continuum: Understanding The Roles And Experiences Of Female Combatants In Colombia’S Armed Conflict, Savitri Restrepo Alvarez Jan 2016

The Victim/Perpetrator Continuum: Understanding The Roles And Experiences Of Female Combatants In Colombia’S Armed Conflict, Savitri Restrepo Alvarez

Honors Thesis Collection

In December 2015, supported by the Schiff fellowship, I traveled to Colombia to interview recently demobilized female FARC guerillas participating in state reintegration programs. Estimates suggest that 40% of the combatants in Colombia’s decades-long conflict are women. However, the complex role that women have played has largely been overlooked. Much of the literature on conflict resolution assumes a dichotomy in which women are either ‘victims’ or ‘perpetrators.’ In reality, the distinction between these absolute categories is never entirely clear. The purpose of my trip was to examine women’s particular experiences as combatants, looking at the circumstances that led them to …

Echoes, Marissa Klee-Peregon Jan 2016

Echoes, Marissa Klee-Peregon

Honors Thesis Collection

In a corner of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, just off the main medieval art gallery, there is a small room ending in an apse with a 12th century Catalonian fresco. In a 12th century church in Catalonia, Spain, there is an apse that once held the fresco now in the MFA. Now, rather than paint and plaster or bare walls, the church’s apse holds a photographic reproduction of the fresco. The gallery recalls the church with its empty apse, and the church recalls the gallery in the MFA.

Echoes recalls both.

The works in Echoes, images drawn …

The Ethics Of Historic Preservation, Erich Hatala Matthes Jan 2016

The Ethics Of Historic Preservation, Erich Hatala Matthes

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article draws together research from various sub-disciplines of philosophy to offer an overview of recent philosophical work on the ethics of historic preservation. I discuss how philosophers writing about art, culture, and the environment have appealed to historical significance in crafting arguments about the preservation of objects, practices, and places. By demonstrating how it relates to core themes in moral and political philosophy, I argue that historic preservation is essentially concerned with ethical issues.

Transforming Narratives Through “Live”: A Pastoral Model Of Care For Women In Sex Work, Nkiruka Okafor Ihm

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This work, “Transforming Narratives Through “Live”: A Pastoral Model of Care for Women in Sex Work,” seeks to provide the Church with a pastoral response from the narratives of the women doing sex work as streetwalkers in Nigeria. The work uses the four steps of practical theological model of Rick Osmer to describe, interpret, theologize, and strategize on pastoral care of women in sex work. The literature review, both descriptive and interpretive, examines the perception of agency as exercised by the women in sex work through the work of scholars, writings by women in sex industry, the different pastoral models …

Distinguishing Offshore Bird Hunting From Beach Scavenging In Archaeological Contexts: The Value Of Modern Beach Surveys, Kristine Bovy, Jessica E. Watson, Jane Dolliver, Julia K. Parrish Jan 2016

Distinguishing Offshore Bird Hunting From Beach Scavenging In Archaeological Contexts: The Value Of Modern Beach Surveys, Kristine Bovy, Jessica E. Watson, Jane Dolliver, Julia K. Parrish

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Determining whether seabirds recovered from coastal shell middens were obtained via active hunting or scavenging of beached carcasses is a challenge for archaeologists. Traditional methods have included analyzing skeletal part frequencies, abundance, age profiles, and contextual evidence. The assumption has been made, based on limited biological data, that an assemblage of carcasses scavenged from the beach will have more wing elements, and fewer legs and heads. Few studies, however, have embraced modern beaching data to verify this assumption and assess the potential faunal resources available for scavenging. We analyze the skeletal part representation of modern beached birds observed by the …

Presentation Of The Issue On Cuisine & Performance, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

"Gastronomy is an important part of our culture. The way we eat says a lot about who we are, what culture has shaped us, and the choices we have made concerning our food and the way we eat it. Gastronomy is surrounded by many rituals, and we often perform the way we eat. Besides, since we need to eat every day, we are engaged in rituals and performative acts related to gastronomy every day."

Gender and Women's Studies Faculty Publications

This article is an analysis of law enforcement identified cases of human trafficking in Rhode Island from 2009 to 2013. Information was collected from police and court records, prosecutors’ press releases, and reports in the media. During this period, there was one case of forced labor of a domestic worker and six cases of domestic sex trafficking. Many of the characteristics of the Rhode Island cases were consistent with other human trafficking cases in the United States. Discussions of key findings include (a) outcomes of a criminal case using a new human trafficking statute on fraud in foreign contracting and …

Rethinking The Concept Of “Information Literacy”: A German Perspective, Rares G. Piloiu Jan 2016

Rethinking The Concept Of “Information Literacy”: A German Perspective, Rares G. Piloiu

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the original and diverse approaches to the concept of information literacy in the German academic world. Unlike the American notion of information literacy, whose pedagogy, methodology and conceptualization follow guidelines set forth by powerful professional organisations such as ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) and ALA (American Library Association), the German notion of information literacy is still negotiated on an interdisciplinary market of ideas ranging from communication science to didactics and from cultural anthropology to epistemology. An awareness of this international perspective on information literacy is timely, given the …

The Legal And Medical Ethical Entanglements Of Infant Male Circumcision And International Law, Paul Mclaughlin Jan 2016

The Legal And Medical Ethical Entanglements Of Infant Male Circumcision And International Law, Paul Mclaughlin

Scholarly Works

The practice of infant male circumcision has been debated by legal and medical experts for years. The practice, once seen as a social norm, has come under opposition by children’s rights, legal, and medical organisations around the world. In order to meet the requirements of international treaty law and allow infant male children the fullest opportunity for self determination, infant male circumcision must be treated under the law and by medical practitioners with the same degree of opposition that female genital mutilation has received.
