The Components Of Attentiveness In Oncology Care, Klaartje Klaver, Andries Baart
The Components Of Attentiveness In Oncology Care, Klaartje Klaver, Andries Baart
The Qualitative Report
This article presents the first findings of a qualitative empirical study of caregivers' attentiveness in hospital oncology care. It takes a care ethical perspective, in which attentiveness is considered an indispensable element of good care. The data are derived from participant observation at the oncology department of a general hospital in the Netherlands. The analysis shows a descriptive exploratory model of attentiveness, which comprises a coherent set of the clusters perception (A), object finding (B), and space for attentiveness (C). The methodological output of this article is an important one: the presented descriptive model of attentiveness promotes further research into …
Pregnancy And Childbirth Practices Among Immigrant Women From India: “Have A Healthy Baby”, Rama Cousik, M. Gail Hickey
Pregnancy And Childbirth Practices Among Immigrant Women From India: “Have A Healthy Baby”, Rama Cousik, M. Gail Hickey
The Qualitative Report
In India, practices relating to pregnancy, childbirth and child development have been rooted in cultural beliefs and traditions that are based on knowledge contained in ancient Indian texts. Many Indians residing across the globe continue to observe these practices. Some may find it challenging to do so when they are residing abroad, away from familiar surroundings and separated from their extended families. A small body of research exists that shows that migrant Indian women do observe traditional maternal practices based on cultural beliefs, but there is a need to learn more about how this knowledge is acquired, disseminated and preserved. …

ISER Reports
This assessment evaluates the effects of future climate change on a select set of ecological systems and ecosystem services in Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and Chugach National Forest regions. The focus of the assessment was established during a multi-agency/organization workshop that established the goal to conduct a rigorous evaluation of a limited range of topics rather than produce a broad overview. The report explores the potential consequences of climate change for: (a) snowpack, glaciers, and winter recreation; (b) coastal landscapes and associated environments, (c) vegetation, (d) salmon, and (e) a select set of wildlife species. During the next half century, directional …

Group Analysis In Practice: Narrative Approaches, A Phoenix, J Brannen, H Elliott, J Smithson, Et Al
Group Analysis In Practice: Narrative Approaches, A Phoenix, J Brannen, H Elliott, J Smithson, Et Al
School of Psychology
Working in groups is increasingly regarded as fruitful for the process of analyzing qualitative data. It has been reported to build research skills, make the analytic process visible, reduce inequalities and social distance particularly between researchers and participants, and broaden and intensify engagement with the material. This article contributes to the burgeoning literature on group qualitative data analysis by presenting a worked example of a group data analysis of a short extract from an interview on serial migration from the Caribbean to the UK. It describes the group's working practices and the different analytic resources drawn upon to conduct a …

Disaster Relief: A Monitoring & Evaluation Framework For Kopan Monastery, Shiva-Nandan Arens
Disaster Relief: A Monitoring & Evaluation Framework For Kopan Monastery, Shiva-Nandan Arens
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The April 2015 Nepal earthquake was the largest such event since 1934. It killed thousands, injured tens of thousands, and left an estimated two million homeless. The property damage was estimated to be equivalent to 25% of Nepal’s GDP. The chaos caused by the earthquake was soon compounded by a complex political gridlock and resulting blockade, which has only recently been resolved. In this catastrophic setting, the non-governmental organization response was difficult to coordinate, and occurred with reduced capacity due to inadequate or total lack of access to resources. Kopan Monastery temporarily shifted the locus of its work to the …

Togiak Archaeological Site Hair Samples- What Species?, Clare Super
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The Molecular Anthropology lab at UMT will conduct DNA analysis on ancient hairs to determine what species they came from. Dr. Kristen Barnett, an anthropology postdoctoral scholar, obtained these samples from the Old Togiak archaeological site, the location of the half mile long remains of an ancient village on the southwest coast of Bristol Bay, Alaska. The site contains 62 house mounds and has been studied using surface/subsurface mapping technology and thirty-six core samples. In ten of those core samples, eleven unidentified hairs were found. I will be assisting in mitochondrial DNA analysis of the hairs, focusing at first on …

Faunal Analysis Of Togiak Archaeological And Paleoecological Project: How Ecology Affects Indigenous Subsistence Practices In The Arctic Wetlands, Dougless Skinner
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The Togiak Archeological and Paleoecological Project (TAPP) is an initiative to learn about the ancient life-ways of the Yup'ik indigenous peoples of Togiak, Alaska. TAPP is a collaborative project driven by the Togiak community and their interests in understanding and documenting their own past lifeways at the Old Togiak Village. Thirty-five core samples were collected from a series of pre-colonial house structures at the Old Togiak Site in the summer of 2015 and analyzed at the University of Montana. Faunal remains recovered from the cores were examined during this time along with stone tools, botanical remains, pollen, and a variety …

Reawakening In Bundelkhand: Cultural Identity In Orchha And The Effects Of Tourism On Its Creation, Preservation, And Loss, Brenton David Kalinowski
Black & Gold
The purpose of this study is to explore the roots of the cultural identity of the Indian town of Orchha today, and with that context in place, to analyze the influence tourism has had in Orchha in the past twenty years. In particular, how tourism has created new cultural identity, how it has influenced a movement towards the preservation of cultural identity, but also how it has threatened loss of cultural identity. The research was conducted using a combined historical and ethnographic approach, using both archival research and ethnographic techniques. Throughout the study, and as this paper shows, the medieval …
The Colonial Roots Of The Racial Fetishization Of Black Women, Caren M. Holmes
The Colonial Roots Of The Racial Fetishization Of Black Women, Caren M. Holmes
Black & Gold
In my research, I examined the history of sexual debasement and abuse of black women throughout American history and its influence of modern racial fetishization. In my paper, I explore the influence of European colonial thought on these modern realities. I argue that the conquest and feminization of the New World led to the dehumanization and conquest of African women who were perceived by colonialists to be byproducts of manifest destiny. My research reflects how the sexual debasement experienced by black women throughout American history has led to the racial fetishization prevalent today. I also consider how this history of …

Cladistically Modeling Oldowan Assemblages: Preliminary Insights And Issues, Corey L. Johnson
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Phylogenetics are useful for modeling cultural evolutionary relationships between taxa and can be used to reveal patterns of change reflected in the archaeological record. Lithic technology represents an ideal subject for phylogenetic analyses of culture because of its ubiquitous use in hunter-gatherer and early hominin populations, its ecological and memetic malleability, and the vast literature regarding the roughly 3.3 million-year-old lithic archaeological record. The Lower Paleolithic (~3.3-0.6 Ma) archaeological record provides important insight into early hominin evolution and behavior regarding landscape use, migration, and cognitive complexity. Although Lower Paleolithic stone-tools are less morphologically diverse than subsequent technologies, a considerable amount …

Creating The Campesino: United States’ Influence On Agrarian Reform During The 1952-1953 Bolivian National Revolution, Carly J. Campbell
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Throughout 1952 and 1953, Bolivia experienced a violent National Revolution. The Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) rose to power on the platform of universal suffrage, nationalization of tin mines, and the breakup of Bolivia’s traditional agricultural system. On August 2, 1953, President Estenssoro of the MNR signed Agrarian Reform into law before a crowd of indigenous leaders, who celebrated the victorious moment. In appearances, the new government had fulfilled its promise of land redistribution, enfranchising the long-oppressed indigenous population.
However, the underlying presence of the United States convoluted reform. Unlike many other Latin American countries during the post-WWII era, the new …

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
How Are We Impacting Communities In Short-Term International Service Immersion Programs?, Eliza Wethey
How Are We Impacting Communities In Short-Term International Service Immersion Programs?, Eliza Wethey
Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)
The presentation will allow participants to critically examine service immersion and service-learning programs in an international context. While impacting students is an important outcome of international service immersion programs, equally important is our impact on communities. How are we considering the needs of the community partners we are working with? How are we ensuring the sustainability of the programs after our short-term involvement. How are we preparing students for work in these contexts?
This presentation will explore these questions in the context of Virginia Tech and VT Engage's international programs and give suggestions for how we can implement more sustainable …

Powerful Women And Misogynistic Subplots: Some Comments On The Necessity Of Checking The Primary Sources, Tracy Adams
Powerful Women And Misogynistic Subplots: Some Comments On The Necessity Of Checking The Primary Sources, Tracy Adams
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Many women formerly regarded as harridans, vixens, or worse by historians throughout the ages have been rehabilitated in recent years. It is therefore discouraging to find old narratives of female promiscuity, intriguing, incompetence, frivolity, cupidity, obesity) continuing to circulate, in the form of what we might think of as female "subplots" in larger histories. When the woman in question is not the star of the study she is often subject to outdated stereotypes gleaned from old studies. This essay, focusing on a number of very recent subplots that recycle verifiably incorrect assumptions about Isabeau of Bavaria (1371-1435), queen of mad …

Confronting Evil: The Psychology Of Secularization In Modern French Literature, Scott M. Powers
Confronting Evil: The Psychology Of Secularization In Modern French Literature, Scott M. Powers
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Confronting Evil: The Psychology of Secularization in Modern French Literature holds that the concept of evil is central to the psychology of secularism. Drawing on notions of secularization as a phenomenon of ambivalence or dualism in which religion continues to exist alongside secularity in exerting influence on modern French thought, author Scott M. Powers enlists psychoanalytic theory on mourning and sublimation, the philosophical concept of the sublime, Charles Taylor's theory of religious and secular "cross-pressures," and William James's psychology of conversion to account for the survival of religious themes in Baudelaire, Zola, Huysmans, and Céline. For Powers, Baudelaire's prose poems, …

Variation In Stem Mortality Rates Determines Patterns Of Above-Ground Biomass In Amazonian Forests: Implications For Dynamic Global Vegetation Models, Michelle O. Johnson, David R. Galbraith, Manuel Gloor, Hannes De Deurwaerder, Matthieu Guimberteau, Anja Rammig, Kirsten Thonicke, Hans Verbeeck, Celso Von Randow, Bradley O. Christoffersen
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Understanding the processes that determine above-ground biomass (AGB) in Amazonian forests is important for predicting the sensitivity of these ecosystems to environmental change and for designing and evaluating dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). AGB is determined by inputs from woody productivity [woody net primary productivity (NPP)] and the rate at which carbon is lost through tree mortality. Here, we test whether two direct metrics of tree mortality (the absolute rate of woody biomass loss and the rate of stem mortality) and/or woody NPP, control variation in AGB among 167 plots in intact forest across Amazonia. We then compare these relationships …
A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Genetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome sequences yield contrasting pictures of the movement of peoples into the Pacific Islands, with mtDNA suggesting rapid migration and a lack of admixture with indigenous Melanesian populations, and the Y-chromosome data maintaining a higher level of admixture due to a slower rate of migration. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is the matrilocal residency pattern practiced by early Pacific settlers, in which Melanesian men were brought into settler communities to intermarry with local women. If matrilocal residency was practiced, male populations will exhibit higher within-groups variance and lower between-group variance than female populations. …

The Bridge River Dogs: Interpreting Adna And Stable Isotope Analysis Collected From Dog Remains, Emilia Tifental
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Excavations at the Bridge River site have been on-going since 2003, increasing our understanding of the communities that inhabited the Middle Fraser Canyon, British Columbia, over 1,000 years ago. The most recent excavation at Housepit 54 in the summer of 2014 supplied further data regarding relationships between people and their dogs. Dogs are well documented in the Middle Fraser Canyon through both archaeological excavations and traditional knowledge. A household's possession of a dog has been linked to other prestigious materials, and therefore been interpreted as an indicator of wealth and status. The present study was aimed at further investigation of …
