A Stylistic Analysis Of Protohistoric Polychrome Ceramics From The Lower Mississippi Valley, Karla Oesch
A Stylistic Analysis Of Protohistoric Polychrome Ceramics From The Lower Mississippi Valley, Karla Oesch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The unique nature of ceramics from the Lower Mississippi Valley provides an important basis for detailed ceramic studies that aid researchers in understanding processes of social change. These ceramic assemblages, especially those dating to the Protohistoric period, will be the focus of this research. Ceramic vessels from Coahoma, Lee, and Phillips Counties, will be used to compile a database of design motifs, in addition to other ceramic characteristics. Using the available radiocarbon dates from these sites, my research will help to better understand the chronological placement of specific ceramic characteristics. Furthermore, my research will not only supplement ceramic chronologies, but …
Silent Resistance: The History And Resonance Of 19th Century Photographs Of Native Americans, Maria Carmela Ferguson
Silent Resistance: The History And Resonance Of 19th Century Photographs Of Native Americans, Maria Carmela Ferguson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although nineteenth-century photographs of Native Americans were often created to portray romanticized images of a "vanishing race," they can also represent the agency of those pictured. In this paper, Ipresent research on a collection of photographs taken of Osage Indians by George W. Parsons in Pawhuska, Indian Territory, during the late nineteenth-century. In order to support my claim that the photographs in the collection are examples of silent resistance practiced by Native Americans, Idiscuss the history of representation of Native Americans and highlight elements of Osage culture illustrated by the photographs. In doing so, I demonstrate how the images illustrate …
Pragmatism, Professionalization, And Privatization In The Administration Of The Memphis Zoo, 1906-2016, Rita M. Hall
Pragmatism, Professionalization, And Privatization In The Administration Of The Memphis Zoo, 1906-2016, Rita M. Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Memphis Zoo was founded in 1906 and has developed over the past 110 years through three distinctive administrative paradigms. This paper examines the power structures in a semi-biographical, top-down historical approach to seek answers as to why the zoo developed in the ways that it did. The earliest superintendents were pragmatic choices by the Park Commission, selected for their availability, willingness, and interest in or experience with wild animals. Many of them gained this experience through circus work, lending a showmanship air to the presentation of the zoo in its first several decades. The opening of higher education possibilities …
A Study Of The Improvisational Style Of Theodore "Fats" Navarro, 1949–1950, Russell C. Zimmer
A Study Of The Improvisational Style Of Theodore "Fats" Navarro, 1949–1950, Russell C. Zimmer
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
This study analyzes improvisatory techniques of Theodore “Fats” Navarro (1923-1950). Live improvised solos of the trumpeter from 1949-1950 were examined to better understand the improvisational style through the analysis of transcribed solos. Chapter one gives a brief overview of Navarro’s brief professional career and why he was chosen as the subject of this study. Chapter two sets out the methodology for this study and reviews related literature to the study of Fats Navarro. Chapter three provides a brief background of each performance from which the transcriptions were selected. Chapter four identifies those aspects of his improvisation that occur often harmonically, …
Self-Identified Feminist Mothers' Naming Practices For Their Children: Accepting Being "As Feminist As Everyone" Else, Amy Eshleman, Jean Halley
Self-Identified Feminist Mothers' Naming Practices For Their Children: Accepting Being "As Feminist As Everyone" Else, Amy Eshleman, Jean Halley
Publications and Research
In this study, we apply the complexities of feminism to feminists’ choices regarding the surnames of their children. Along with other progressive movements, feminism acknowledges that names matter. Across diverse perspectives within feminism, we do not want to be called girls, but women. We do not want to be called chairmen, but chair or chairperson. We want the title we earned, Dr., or the title we share with all women, Ms., not Miss or Mrs. Given this awareness, and given feminist scholars’ privileged position in the world, we examine the often-patrilineal naming decisions of self-identified feminist faculty members.

Offline Student Political Activism: Supported Or Thwarted By Online Political Engagement?, Nicole M. Jovicevic
Offline Student Political Activism: Supported Or Thwarted By Online Political Engagement?, Nicole M. Jovicevic
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Social media is an integral part of everyday life for the current generation of college-age students. Researchers debate whether the time invested into these sites has a positive or negative influence on offline political activism. Drawing on an original survey of undergraduate students at Illinois Wesleyan University, this study finds that online political engagement has a significant, positive relationship with offline political activism, and this relationship holds even when controlling for the respondent’s political efficacy and natural political inclination. There is a positive relationship between online and offline political activism for students who believe that social media is an appropriate …

Imperial Ethiopia: Conquest And The Case Of National Articulation, Hawi T. Tilahune
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
The general assumption holds that war played a critical role in the state-building processes of Western European nation-states. In light of this assumption, this paper explores the predatory theory and the centrality of war in the processes of institutional and social development in Ethiopia. Due to the experiences of colonialism and the perceptions of what constitute a “legitimate” warfare, Tilly’s Bellicist account is rarely tested on the African continent. In this paper, I argue that European experiences of state-building provide pivotal and applicable insights into the state-formation processes of Ethiopia. More precisely, these insights shed light to the dual processes …

What Do Men Want? Re-Examining Whether Men Benefit From Higher Fertility Than Is Optimal For Women, Cristina Moya, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear
What Do Men Want? Re-Examining Whether Men Benefit From Higher Fertility Than Is Optimal For Women, Cristina Moya, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Several empirical observations suggest that when women have more autonomy over their reproductive decisions, fertility is lower. Some evolutionary theorists have interpreted this as evidence for sexual conflicts of interest, arguing that higher fertility is more adaptive for men than women. We suggest the assumptions underlying these arguments are problematic: assuming that women suffer higher costs of reproduction than men neglects the (different) costs of reproduction for men; the assumption that men can repartner is often false. We use simple models to illustrate that 1) men or women can prefer longer interbirth intervals (IBIs), 2) if men can only partner …

Women’s education has emerged as a central predictor of fertility decline, but the multiple possible mechanisms by which education can affect fertility have not been subject to detailed comparative investigation across multiple sites. In this paper, we use structural equation modelling to examine potential pathways between education and fertility in three different geographic locations: Matlab, Bangladesh; San Borja, Bolivia; and rural Poland. Using a comparable set of variables we show that the pathways by which education affects fertility differ in important ways, yet also show key similarities. In particular, we find that across all three contexts, education affects age at …
Robust Modeling Of Continuous Four Dimensional Affective Space From Eeg Recording., Rakib Al-Fahad
Robust Modeling Of Continuous Four Dimensional Affective Space From Eeg Recording., Rakib Al-Fahad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Context-specific interpretation and description of emotions and affective states are critical in designing assistive solutions and affect enabled software agents. Despite the limitations, four-dimensional affective space (Valence, Arousal, Dominance, and Like) are adequate for practical applications. In this thesis, we present a systematic way of analyzing and modeling continuous four-dimensional affective space from EEG recording. Main findings are (but are not limited to): (i) determining functional brain areas and frequency bands that are relevant in modeling affective space, (ii) select a set of most relevant features for each dimensions of the 4-D affective space using recursive feature elimination (RFE) and …
A Descriptive Study Of Career Perceptions Of Diverse Freshmen Students In A First-Year Experience Course, Clay Andrew Woemmel
A Descriptive Study Of Career Perceptions Of Diverse Freshmen Students In A First-Year Experience Course, Clay Andrew Woemmel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined archival data gathered from freshmen students who completed a career exploration unit in a first-year experience course during a four-year time span (2011-2014) in an effort to determine how levels of career confidence differed among students based upon race, gender, and place of college residence. Four specific research questions were examined: (1) How does confidence in the ability to identify the skills necessary for a desired career differ among freshment students based on race, gender, and collegiate residental status; (2) How does confidence in chosen academic major vary among freshmen students based on race, gender, and collegiate …

Macromammalian Faunas, Biochronology And Palaeoecology Of The Early Pleistocene Main Quarry Hominin-Bearing Deposits Of The Drimolen Palaeocave System, South Africa, Justin W. Adams, Douglass S. Rovinsky, Andy I. R. Herries
KIP Articles
The Drimolen Palaeocave System Main Quarry deposits (DMQ) are some of the most prolific hominin and primate-bearing deposits in the Fossil Hominids of South Africa UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discovered in the 1990s, excavations into the DMQ have yielded a demographically diverse sample of Paranthropus robustus (including DNH 7, the most complete cranium of the species recovered to date), early Homo, Papio hamadryas robinsoni and Cercopithecoides williamsi. Alongside the hominin and primate sample is a diverse macromammalian assemblage, but prior publications have only provided a provisional species list and an analysis of the carnivores recovered prior to 2008. Here we …
How Education Level And Willingness To Learn Affect Older Adults In Their Use Of Mobile Technology In Southwest Idaho, Kimberly Neagle
How Education Level And Willingness To Learn Affect Older Adults In Their Use Of Mobile Technology In Southwest Idaho, Kimberly Neagle
College of Arts and Sciences Presentations
As a person’s age increases, their use of technology decreases (Casado- Muñoz, 2015), which can hinder their access to resources, such as medical care, online products and services, and basic communication. For 90% of American adults, the use of mobile technology is a part of daily life (Pew Research Center, 2014). Previous research shows that if seniors have higher education levels and willingness to learn, they are more likely to use technology (Bailey & Sheehan, 2009). This project will examine how education levels affect a senior’s use of technology, and how their willingness to learn affects their adoption of mobile …
