Ideal Elves? Expressing A 3-Dimensional Personality In A 2-Dimensional Space, David Tauber, Joshua Wanner Apr 2016

Ideal Elves? Expressing A 3-Dimensional Personality In A 2-Dimensional Space, David Tauber, Joshua Wanner

Student Research Symposium

Published in 2007, the Ideal Elf is a classic article studying character creation in Online Games. It used quantitative methods to address the difference between the idealize self of individuals surveyed, and the online characters they create. In their survey they found the difference between an individuals ideal self and the traits of the character they created was considerably smaller than the difference between the difference between the individual’s ideal self and their actual self. From this they suggested the creation of characters in game is partially a way for individuals to express their ideal selves. Our research attempted to …

Locating The Nez Perce Trail In Carbon County, Montana, Amy M. Miller Apr 2016

Locating The Nez Perce Trail In Carbon County, Montana, Amy M. Miller

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The Nez Perce National Historic Trail (NPNHT), used by Chief Joseph and “Non-Treaty Nez Perce” during the Nez Perce War of 1877, reaches from Wallowa Lake, Oregon to the Canadian border near Chinook, Montana. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Billings, Montana Field Office, the University of Montana (UM), and the Montana State University-Billings (MSU-B) surveyed a region where the Nez Perce Trail passed through lands that are currently managed by BLM’s Billings Field Office. This presentation will focus on the methods used to locate this section of the NPNHT and the outcomes of the findings. Fieldwork included pedestrian survey …

In Search Of Askia Mohammed, Joe Wilson Apr 2016

In Search Of Askia Mohammed, Joe Wilson

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

This is my MA thesis. I contextualized the Songhay oral history concerning king Askia Mohammed. I placed the folk lore in cultural and historical context to illustrate that the Epic of Askia Mohammed is a complex work of mythology that communicates difficult and complicated information in easily understandable "picture stories." These stories are not at all factual and often distort the historical narrative, but they do so in order that the audience is entertained, cultural norms are reinforced, and the historical account is preserved in a culturally approved framework.

Social Studies With Presence: Technology Use In Kentucky Classrooms, Lesia Lennex, Andrew Perrin

Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)

When reviewing literature for this research, it became clear that literature on the subject of technology in social studies classrooms falls into one of two main categories: how to use types of technology and teachers needing more training in technology use. This research centers on the data collected from a survey sent to Kentucky social studies teachers about their technology use in their classrooms. The initial plan for this research was to find any correlations between standardized test scores and technology use in the social studies. For this reason, surveys were intended only for 5th, 8th, …

The Hetzel-Hunter Quarry: A Case Study In The Use Of Photogrammetry To Reevaluate Previously Excavated Sites, Catherine G. Kinsley Apr 2016

The Hetzel-Hunter Quarry: A Case Study In The Use Of Photogrammetry To Reevaluate Previously Excavated Sites, Catherine G. Kinsley

Theses & Honors Papers

Archaeology is constantly evolving and as new technologies develop it becomes possible to examine sites in ways that were previously unknown. Photogrammetry, a still-developing technology, has the potential to become an invaluable tool that can provide new information when applied to sites that were excavated more than 50 years ago. The Hetzel-Hunter quarry in Clifton, Virginia is a prehistoric soapstone quarry that was originally excavated in 1894 by the Bureau for American Ethnography. By using photogrammetry to produce a 3D map of the site that details aspects ranging from the general shape of the quarry to the grooves in the …

Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project: 2015 Field Season, John Cardinal, Erika Loveland Apr 2016

Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project: 2015 Field Season, John Cardinal, Erika Loveland

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Our current research design is oriented toward identifying evidence of eighteenth-century activities in the vicinity of Fort St. Joseph and collecting architectural data to understand the building styles and construction techniques at the site. Excavations have identified eighteenth-century artifacts throughout the Niles vicinity, although most of the archaeological materials contemporaneous with the fort have been found adjacent to a series of fireplaces uncovered since 2002.

Six 1 x 2 meter units were opened this field season in locations where we expected to intercept walls in order to ascertain the size, orientation, construction methods, and contents of the buildings associated with …

North American Entomophagy, Joohi Schrader, Dennis G. A. B Oonincx, Maria Pontes Ferreira Apr 2016

North American Entomophagy, Joohi Schrader, Dennis G. A. B Oonincx, Maria Pontes Ferreira

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications

Eating insects is not a common Northern American practice today. However, in the past a variety of insect species was consumed in Northern America (north of Mexico including Greenland). The aim of this literature review is to provide an historical overview of North American entomophagy based upon both peer and non-peer reviewed sources on this topic. Regional differences in insect consumption and reasons for being underreported are discussed. We show that North American natives, and in certain cases colonists, collected and consumed a large variety of edible insects. These are categorized per order and where available, information on how these …

Les Phalanges Libanaises: Identity Construction And The Perception Of The Self & Other, Aseel Yehiya Azab Apr 2016

Les Phalanges Libanaises: Identity Construction And The Perception Of The Self & Other, Aseel Yehiya Azab

The Undergraduate Research Journal

The purpose of this paper is to study the identity construction of the Lebanese Phalange Party, postulating that its view of the Other is deeply entrenched within its own development. Strongly regarded as a model of Fascist thought and action, the Phalange, as a popular manifestation of Maronite nationalist thought, Lebanonism, seems to be destined for eternal clash with a similarly endless Other, but this latter is not formulated on religious basis only: the conceptual idea behind the other remains the same throughout the Kataeb’s history of conflict, but its face changes as the nature of the threat to the …

Tooth development and stem cells Tooth is an essential organ in humans. Tooth development spans from the embryonic to the adolescent stage and can last for more than 10 years, which represents possibly the longest duration among all the human organs.1 The whole tooth development process ranges from the initial oral epithelium thickening to root formation and eruption.1 Early tooth development results in rapid cell proliferation to provide sufficient cell number for populating the organ. The key events during later developments are involved in the differentiation of 'tooth-specific' cells such as ameloblasts, the epithelial origin cells that produce enamel, and …

Mediating Our Future: The Role Of The Land Buy-Back Program In Rebuilding Confidence And Strengthening Trust Between Tribal Nations And The United States Government, Brieann West Apr 2016

Mediating Our Future: The Role Of The Land Buy-Back Program In Rebuilding Confidence And Strengthening Trust Between Tribal Nations And The United States Government, Brieann West

Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary

The role that government regulatory agencies like the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs played in enforcing Native American land leasing and land rights issues has changed substantially over the past five years. Current changes include, empowering American Indian tribes to exercise autonomy over tribal land leases, and the introduction of the Land Buy-Back program. Despite these positive strides, several questions remain; including, how reuniting previously divided allotments of land and placing them in trust will impact the current trust relationship? Should tribes have more say over which fractionated land allotments receive purchase offers and how these lands will …
