The Influence Of Diet And Oxidation On Calcium Retention Of The Mitochondria In Fresh Beef, Emery K. Wilkerson
The Influence Of Diet And Oxidation On Calcium Retention Of The Mitochondria In Fresh Beef, Emery K. Wilkerson
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Distillers grains (DG) contribute to cattle sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) membrane instability by increasing poly-unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in the SR membrane, possibly resulting in early postmortem calcium (Ca) leakage and improved tenderness. Mitochondria are relatively easy to isolate intact and provide the opportunity to study Ca in an SR model. The objective of this research was to determine the influence of diet and oxidation on Ca release from mitochondria. Cattle (n = 48) were fed a corn-based finishing diet with or without deoiled, dried DG (50% DM basis). Steaks from each strip loin were aged for 2, 8, …

The Potential Roles Of Long Noncoding Rnas (Lncrna) In Glioblastoma Development, Shuang Liu, Ramkrishna Mitra, Ming-Ming Zhao, Wenhong Fan, Christine M. Eischen, Feng Yin, Zhongming Zhao
Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) may contribute to the initiation and progression of tumor. In this study, we first systematically compared lncRNA and mRNA expression between glioblastoma and paired normal brain tissues using microarray data. We found 27 lncRNA and 82 mRNA significantly upregulated in glioblastoma, as well as 198 lncRNA and 285 mRNA significantly downregulated in glioblastoma. We identified 138 coexpressed lncRNA–mRNA pairs from these differentially expressed lncRNA and genes. Subsequent pathway analysis of the lncRNA-paired genes indicated that EphrinB–EPHB, p75-mediated signaling, TNFα/NF-κB, and ErbB2/ErbB3 signaling pathways might be altered in glioblastoma. Specifically, lncRNA RAMP2-AS1 had significant decrease of expression …

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
For the past 20 years, research on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (B-EF) has only implicitly considered the underlying role of environmental change. We illustrate that explicitly reintroducing environmental change drivers in B-EF research is needed to predict the functioning of ecosystems facing changes in biodiversity. Next we show how this reintroduction improves experimental control over community composition and structure, which helps to provide mechanistic insight on how multiple aspects of biodiversity relate to function and how biodiversity and function relate in food webs. We also highlight challenges for the proposed reintroduction and suggest analyses and experiments to better understand how …

Kentucky’s county animal shelter conditions have not been studied for over 20 years. Major goals of this study were to assess current conditions in Kentucky’s county shelters and determine the degree of compliance with Kentucky shelter laws. Additional information was gathered to determine the major problems and needs identified by shelter personnel and researchers. Data was used to determine if additional state funds or refinements and additions to current laws are warranted to ensure humane care of animals in Kentucky’s county shelters. Researchers consisted of a group of 6 veterinary students who traveled to all Kentucky county animal shelters. Ninety …
Jude's Enochian Apocalypse, Lucian López Osb
Jude's Enochian Apocalypse, Lucian López Osb
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Jude’s was an apocalyptic imagination much like that of the writer of Revelation, but he had no need to write his own apocalypse. In his brief epistle, written sometime before 62 CE, Jude revealed that the apocalyptic imagery fueling his own mythos was none other than that of Enoch and various other ancient stories of the Hebrew people.
Evaluating Language-Learning Mobile Apps For Second-Language Learners, Xiaojun Chen
Evaluating Language-Learning Mobile Apps For Second-Language Learners, Xiaojun Chen
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
As mobile technologies become more affordable and more advanced in function, researchers suggest that using mobile apps to assist English language learning are appropriate. This three-step evaluation study (designing a theory-driven rubric, selecting apps, and evaluating the apps) aims to investigate and evaluate the affordances of English language learning mobile apps for adult learners. The results of this evaluation study contribute to the literature of mobile learning targeting adult learners, and also broaden the knowledge body of integrating mobile learning into English Language Learning (ELL) classes.
Attributes Of Police Vehicle Crashes, David Lambert
Attributes Of Police Vehicle Crashes, David Lambert
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
While overall on-duty law enforcement deaths has decreased moderately from over 160 in 1980 to a level under 120 per year in the late 2000s, fatalities by motor vehicle collisions have steadily increased. This descriptive analysis examines police vehicle crashes during specific conditions such as emergency response, road surface, lighting, and weather in a large statewide police agency. Police vehicle crashes are most likely to occur on dry roads, in daylight conditions, and in clear weather on weekdays as opposed to weekends. Weather and lighting conditions are not the most frequent factors associated with cruiser crashes in this examination.
Integrating Row Covers And Hydronic Heating For High Tunnel Season Extension Vegetable Production, Shawn Jadrnicek
Integrating Row Covers And Hydronic Heating For High Tunnel Season Extension Vegetable Production, Shawn Jadrnicek
All Theses
Combining bottom heating of soil with inexpensive fabric row covers improves yields and prevents cold damage with lettuce and arugula. Two experiments were conducted to determining an ideal heating tube placement and row cover thickness to allow growers to optimize heating systems. Temperature sensors in the first experiment were 30 cm from heating tubes with and without medium thickness (28 g m-2) row covers. A second experiment compared temperatures under medium and thick (62 g m-2) row covers when sensors were placed directly above the heating tubes. Hydronic heat alone increased average minimum nighttime temperature 0.4 C 30 cm from …

On November 11, 2016 cancer claimed the life of longtime member and friend of NOU Betty Grenon, perhaps best remembered as our very intelligent, personable, meticulous treasurer and tenacious guardian of organization funds. Our records indicate Betty became a member in 1991. Her talents and qualifications (CPA and Nebraska's first female Certified Management Accountant) were soon recognized. She became NOU Treasurer in 1994, a position held until her death, except for a 3-year hiatus when her employment with Enron took her to Houston, Texas. NOU has benefited in a number of other ways from Betty's organizational skills and attention to …

Fall Field Report, August–November 2016, W. Ross Silcock
Fall Field Report, August–November 2016, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
As usual, there was quite a bit to chew over in the Fall Seasonal Report, although it was generally a pretty uneventful season, especially among waterfowl and shorebirds. The mild fall allowed some good counts to occur, such as the 20+ Surf Scoters, 465 meadowlarks in Garfield Co, and at least 11 White-winged Doves.
First State Records are hard to come by; amazing was an Anna's Hummingbird that showed up in the Manning Family's central Omaha yard. How many pass through the yards of non-birders undetected? Always a mind-boggling thought. A 3rd state record Costa's Hummingbird came to light from …

Finding The Best Remaining Black Hills Montane Grasslands, The First Step In Conservation, Hollis Marriott, Don Faber-Langendoen, David J. Ode
The Prairie Naturalist
Black Hills Montane Grassland is a rare and endangered plant community endemic to the Black Hills of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. It is restricted to higher elevations on the Limestone Plateau in the western part of the uplift. Early visitors to the Black Hills wrote glowing reports of flower-filled grasslands on the Limestone Plateau. Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer and his soldiers reveled in lush grass, and decorated the headgear of their horses with flowers (Custer 1875). Expedition botanist A. B. Donaldson “estimated the number of flowers in bloom in Floral Valley at 50, while an equal number …

The Prairie Naturalist
Lake Oahe, South Dakota, USA, landlocked fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) reproductive characteristics were examined over a 27 year period, from 1988 to 2015. Mean total lengths of spawning females ranged from 665 mm (1995) to 812 mm (2015) with considerable year-to-year variation. Post-spawn female weights varied, ranging from 2.02 kg (2000) to 5.55 kg (2015), with an overall mean of 3.04 kg. Fecundity peaked at 4,555 eggs per female in 2003, which was just 3 years after a low of 2,011 eggs per female in 2000. Relative fecundity based on female weight was greatest at 1,211 eggs/kg …
Diverse: An R Package To Analyze Diversity In Complex Systems, Miguel R. Guevara, Dominik Hartmann, Marcelo Mendoza
Diverse: An R Package To Analyze Diversity In Complex Systems, Miguel R. Guevara, Dominik Hartmann, Marcelo Mendoza
The R Journal
The package diverse provides an easy-to-use interface to calculate and visualize different aspects of diversity in complex systems. In recent years, an increasing number of research projects in social and interdisciplinary sciences, including fields like innovation studies, scientometrics, economics, and network science have emphasized the role of diversification and sophistication of socioeconomic systems. However, so far no dedicated package exists that covers the needs of these emerging fields and interdisciplinary teams. Most packages about diversity tend to be created according to the demands and terminology of particular areas of natural and biological sciences. The package diverse uses interdisciplinary concepts of …
Normal Tolerance Interval Procedures In The Tolerance Package, Derek S. Young
Normal Tolerance Interval Procedures In The Tolerance Package, Derek S. Young
The R Journal
Statistical tolerance intervals are used for a broad range of applications, such as quality control, engineering design tests, environmental monitoring, and bioequivalence testing. tolerance is the only R package devoted to procedures for tolerance intervals and regions. Perhaps the most commonly-employed functions of the package involve normal tolerance intervals. A number of new procedures for this setting have been included in recent versions of tolerance. In this paper, we discuss and illustrate the functions that implement these normal tolerance interval procedures, one of which is a new, novel type of operating characteristic curve.

Eicompare: Comparing Ecological Inference Estimates Across Ei And Ei:Rc, Loren Collingwood, Kassra Oskooii, Sergio Garcia-Rios, Matt Barreto

Social scientists and statisticians often use aggregate data to predict individual-level behavior because the latter are not always available. Various statistical techniques have been developed to make inferences from one level (e.g., precinct) to another level (e.g., individual voter) that minimize errors associated with ecological inference. While ecological inference has been shown to be highly problematic in a wide array of scientific fields, many political scientists and analysis employ the techniques when studying voting patterns. Indeed, federal voting rights lawsuits now require such an analysis, yet expert reports are not consistent in which type of ecological inference is used. This …

How Do Designers Of The Built Environment Attempt To Make Ecological Sustainability Sensory Legible?, Carly L. Bartow
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper attempts to provide a theoretical framework for making ecosystem function and ecologically sustainable design more perceptible or sensible to people through architecture and the built environment. Design features of the Bertschi School Science Wing and the Bullitt Center in Seattle, Washington are incorporated to illustrate the sensory legibility of ecological sustainability criteria. The criteria are available to designers to help educate a building's occupants on environmentally sustainable design and motivate more sustainable behavior.
Sovereign Invulnerability: Sexual Politics And The Ontology Of Rape, Jane Clare Jones
Sovereign Invulnerability: Sexual Politics And The Ontology Of Rape, Jane Clare Jones
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
As Rebecca Whisnant has noted, notions of “national…and…bodily (especially sexual) sovereignty are routinely merged in rhetoric and metaphor.†(2008:155) Departing from this observation, this project explores the ‘existential infrastructure’ of the ‘logic of sovereign integrity’ in which personhood is thought as analogous to jurisdiction over a bounded territorial enclosure. It traces the philosophical history of this logic, and unfolds the post-Heideggerian French critique of sovereignty as an analysis of how sovereign imperatives are animated by a drive to deny the vulnerabilities of constitutive ontological relation, and are thus implicated in violent cycles of disavowal and appropriation. It then applies this …
The Role Of Protein Kinase C In Mammalian Target Of Rapamycin Signaling And Its Therapeutic Implications In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Mengling Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, which integrates extracellular and intracellular signals, plays a key role in cell metabolism, growth and survival; therefore, the proteins in the signaling pathway must be tightly regulated in order to maintain cellular homeostasis. Conversely, dysregulation of key components of mTOR signaling pathway leads to increased cellular growth and proliferation, which is implicated in many human cancers. Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/ threonine kinases that regulate many cellular processes including proliferation and cell survival. It has been shown to regulate mTOR signaling in some human cancers. However, the mechanism …

Local Modeling Of Attributed Graphs: Algorithms And Applications, Bryan Perozzi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
It is increasingly common to encounter real-world graphs which have attributes associated with the nodes, in addition to their raw connectivity information. For example, social networks contain both the friendship relations as well as user attributes such as interests and demographics. A protein-protein interaction network may not only have the interaction relations but the expression levels associated with the proteins. Such information can be described by a graph in which nodes represent the objects, edges represent the relations between them, and feature vectors associated with the nodes represent the attributes. This graph data is often referred to as an attributed …
Mediating Trans/Nationalism: Japanese ‘Jun’Ai’ (Pure-Love) In Popular Media Representations | Mediating Trans/Nationalism: Japanese €˜Jun’Ai’ (Pure-Love) In Popular Media Representations, I-Te Rita Sung
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the jun’ai (pure-love) genre has flourished in Japan, both in works of popular literature and in film. This phenomenon coincides with a time when the country is seen by the media as being characterized by soshitsukan (sense of loss). In jun’ai films, the heroine is often the object of loss. This theme of loss in jun’ai therefore resonates with the Japanese social context, but this connection has not yet been fully elucidated. In this dissertation, I seek to explain why Japanese women, who are arguably treated as “other†within Japan, embody a transnationalism …

Abstract of the Thesis DNA Damage induces invasion of MCF-7 (Human Breast Adenocarcinoma) Cells by Ronald S. Chavez Master of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology Stony Brook University 2016 Breast Cancer is a common malignancy in American and European women, and approximately one-third of these women develop metastasis and die from the disease. Chemotherapy is widely used to treat breast cancer and is known to extend survival of patients. Despite this fact, a small percentage of cells can endure and gain resistance to these treatments. Clinicians have sought to increase the time and intensity of these doses to reduce …

What drives not merely the individual but our society as a whole? How do we regard our own experiences, and, as an extension, how does that affect how we relate to the experiences of another? How do our individual motivations affect our societal motivations and vice versa? These core questions serve as the catalyst for my work. By developing artwork with this line of inquiry in mind, which includes research into contemporary as well as historic social criticisms, I come closer to finding answers to the questions that fuel my artistic practice. Throughout the process, I mine the many ways …

Wen Zhengming’s Deep Snow in Guanshan Mountains, as many other landscape paintings in China, is usually interpreted and appreciated as the spirituality extended from the artist. It also relates the common value of aesthetics come from traditional Chinese philosophy, and the value system completes itself as a mature system of appreciating artworks. However, since traditional literature of art criticism and appreciation in China tends to be generalized, concise, and implicative, and there are certain viewpoints that are tacitly agreed among artists and art critics, it is often self-evident for people who are familiar with the system of Chinese aesthetics, but …

Molecular Strong Field Ionization Viewed With Photoelectron Velocity Map Imaging, Peter Sandor
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this thesis, work is presented on molecular strong-field ionization, during which an electron is removed from polyatomic molecules in the presence of strong laser fields. This is a process which is the basis of a number of experimental techniques to uncover electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules on the femtosecond and attosecond timescale. ’Strong’ refers to an electric field strength which leads to a response from the system which can not be modeled perturbatively. These fields can be easily produced in the focus of femtosecond laser radiation, as is done in this work. With the use of velocity map …
