An Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Implications Of Dewey’S Ecological Thinking, Simon Jorgenson Jul 2016

An Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Implications Of Dewey’S Ecological Thinking, Simon Jorgenson

Occasional Paper Series

My primary purpose is to (re)examine Dewey in the context of contemporary conceptions of ecology and environmental education. With this in mind, I will focus primarily on what Dewey has to say about the natural world, beginning with his general philosophy and moving through several of his educational works.

Caroline Pratt: Progressive Pedagogy In Statu Nascendi, Jeroen Staring

Occasional Paper Series

This article explores two themes in the life of Caroline Pratt, founder of the Play School, later the City and Country School. These themes, central to Harriet Cuffaro’s values as a teacher and scholar, are Pratt’s early progressive pedagogy, developed during experimental shopwork between 1901 and 1908; and her theories on play and toys, developed while observing children play with her Do-With Toys and Unit Blocks between 1908 and 1914. Focusing on her early and previously unexplored writings, this article illustrates how Caroline Pratt developed a coherent theory of innovative progressive pedagogy.

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy Jul 2016

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this chapter I argue that teaching, as we now understand the term, is historically and cross-culturally very rare. It appears to be unnecessary to transmit culture or to socialize children. Children are, on the other hand, primed by evolution to be avid observers, imitators, players and helpers—roles that reveal the profoundly autonomous and self-directed nature of culture acquisition (Lancy in press a). And yet, teaching is ubiquitous throughout the modern world—at least among the middle to upper class segment of the population. This ubiquity has led numerous scholars to argue for the universality and uniqueness of teaching as a …

Detection Of Zoonotic Enteropathogens In Children And Domestic Animals In A Semirural Community In Ecuador., Karla Vasco, Jay P Graham, Gabriel Trueba

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

UNLABELLED: Animals are important reservoirs of zoonotic enteropathogens, and transmission to humans occurs more frequently in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where small-scale livestock production is common. In this study, we investigated the presence of zoonotic enteropathogens in stool samples from 64 asymptomatic children and 203 domestic animals of 62 households in a semirural community in Ecuador between June and August 2014. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to assess zoonotic transmission of Campylobacter jejuni and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC), which were the most prevalent bacterial pathogens in children and domestic animals (30.7% and 10.5%, respectively). Four sequence types …

Using Regression-Based Effect Size Meta-Analysis To Investigate Coral Responses To Climate Change, Niklas Alexander Kornder Jul 2016

Using Regression-Based Effect Size Meta-Analysis To Investigate Coral Responses To Climate Change, Niklas Alexander Kornder

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Attempts to quantify the effects of ocean acidification and warming (OAW) on scleractinian corals provide a growing body of response measurements. However, placing empirical results into an ecological context is challenging, owing to variations that reflect both natural heterogeneity and scientific bias. This study addresses the heterogeneity of climate change induced changes in coral recruitment and calcification. To discern scientific bias and identify drivers of the remaining heterogeneity, 100 publications were analyzed using a combination of weighted mixed effects meta-regression and factorial effect size meta‑analysis. A linear model was applied to quantify the variation caused by differing stress levels across …

Phosphogenesis Associated With The Shuram Excursion: Petrographic And Geochemical Observations From The Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation Of South China, Huan Cui, Shuhai Xiao, Chuanming Zhou, Yongbo Peng, Alan J. Kaufman, Rebecca E. Plummer Jul 2016

Phosphogenesis Associated With The Shuram Excursion: Petrographic And Geochemical Observations From The Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation Of South China, Huan Cui, Shuhai Xiao, Chuanming Zhou, Yongbo Peng, Alan J. Kaufman, Rebecca E. Plummer

Faculty Publications

© 2016 Elsevier B.V. The Ediacaran Period witnessed one of the largest phosphogenic events in Earth's history. Coincidently, some phosphorite deposits in South China are associated with the largest-known carbon isotope negative excursion (i.e., Shuram Excursion), suggesting an intimate coupling of the biogeochemical carbon and phosphorous cycles. However, the geomicrobiological linkage between these anomalies remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the phosphorite samples from the uppermost Doushantuo Formation in South China. Carbon isotope compositions of authigenic calcite cements and nodules in the phosphorites are as low as –34‰ (VPDB). Petrographic and geochemical investigations indicate that the 13C-depleted carbonates …

Enhancing Phosphate Adsorption By Mg/Al Layered Double Hydroxide Functionalized Biochar With Different Mg/Al Ratios, Ronghua Li, Jim J. Wang, Baoyue Zhou, Mukesh Kumar Awasthi, Amjad Ali, Zengqiang Zhang, Lewis A. Gaston, Altaf Hussain Lahori, Amanullah Mahar Jul 2016

Enhancing Phosphate Adsorption By Mg/Al Layered Double Hydroxide Functionalized Biochar With Different Mg/Al Ratios, Ronghua Li, Jim J. Wang, Baoyue Zhou, Mukesh Kumar Awasthi, Amjad Ali, Zengqiang Zhang, Lewis A. Gaston, Altaf Hussain Lahori, Amanullah Mahar

Faculty Publications

Mg/Al ratio plays a significant role for anion adsorption by Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides (Mg/Al-LDHs) modified biochar. In this study, Mg/Al-LDHs biochar with different Mg/Al ratios (2, 3, 4) were prepared by co-precipitation for phosphate removal from aqueous solution. Factors on phosphate adsorption including Mg/Al ratio, pH, and the presence of other inorganic anions were investigated through batch experiments. Increasing Mg/Al ratio in the Mg/Al-LDHs biochar composites generally enhanced phosphate adsorption with Langmuir adsorption maximum calculated at 81.83 mg phosphorous (P) per gram of 4:1 Mg/Al-LDHs biochar at pH 3.0. The adsorption process was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. …

Pragmatism And The Mass Public, Richard T. Longoria Jul 2016

Pragmatism And The Mass Public, Richard T. Longoria

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article examines public opinion as it relates to the primary tenets of the pragmatic philosophy. Anti-foundationalism, fallibilism, and an emphasis on practical consequences are observed in American public opinion. In addition, there is strong support for pragmatic politics in America. The evidence suggests that pragmatism is a common cultural attribute in American society.

José Efraín Ríos Montt: A Guatemalan Nightmare, Ryan Melson Jul 2016

José Efraín Ríos Montt: A Guatemalan Nightmare, Ryan Melson

Theses and Dissertations

In Guatemala, dictator Efrain Rios Montt's seventeen month regime, from 1982 to 1983, had countless human rights violations. After being deposed from leadership in 1983, Rios Montt's supporters have displayed enduring loyalty to him. As a result of this, Rios Montt's beliefs and desires have held considerable political and social wealth in Guatemala's political and social spheres. Rios Montt's political and social power in Guatemala has given him impunity within the justice system. The Guatemalan justice system has created a fractured state, and paved the way for more violence.

Assessment Of Potential Risks Of Dietary Rnai To A Soil Micro-Arthropod, Sinella Curviseta Brook (Collembola: Entomobryidae), Huipeng Pan, Linghua Xu, Jeffrey E. Noland, Hu Li, Blair D. Siegfried, Xuguo Zhou

Entomology Faculty Publications

RNAi-based genetically engineered (GE) crops for the management of insect pests are likely to be commercialized by the end of this decade. Without a workable framework for conducting the ecological risk assessment (ERA) and a standardized ERA protocol, however, the utility of RNAi transgenic crops in pest management remains uncertain. The overall goal of this study is to assess the risks of RNAi-based GE crops on a non-target soil micro-arthropod, Sinella curviseta, which could be exposed to plant-protected dsRNAs deposited in crop residues. Based on the preliminary research, we hypothesized that insecticidal dsRNAs targeting at the western corn rootworm, …

Predicting Choices In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Learning Rules And The Two-Armed Bandit, Isabel Lucia Rojas-Ferrer Jul 2016

Predicting Choices In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Learning Rules And The Two-Armed Bandit, Isabel Lucia Rojas-Ferrer

Theses

Animals must make estimates about possible resources in order to choose the resource which will save them time and energy while conferring high energetic content. In order to make the most optimal decision, foragers must use various parameters to come up with an accurate estimate for each possible alternative. Learning rules allow us the possibility of analyzing which parameters animals may be using in order to make the best decision. We use compare known learning rules (i.e. Linear Operator Rule, Relative Payoff Sum Rule, Perfect Memory) and experimental data extracted from bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) subjected to a two armed bandit …

Induced Phytoextraction Of Lead From Contaminated Soils By Panicum Virgatum, Enhanced With Edta, Citric Acid, Benomyl, Propiconazole And Nitric Oxide, Adrianna E. Beavers

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Soil lead (Pb) contamination represents a major environmental and public health risk. Conventional Pb remediation methods are typically expensive and risk further environmental damage. Phytoextraction has emerged as an alternative heavy metal remediation method with the potential for reducing both economic cost and negative environmental effects. For this study, North American native switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) was chosen due to its ability to achieve high biomass yields across a variety of climates and environmental conditions. The switchgrass plants in this study were treated with chemical chelates, fungal suppressants, and nitric oxide (NO) donors with the intent of optimizing Pb …

The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher Jul 2016

The Death Penalty And The Fifth Amendment, Joseph Blocher

NULR Online

In this essay, Blocher considers recent developments that have given new hope to those seeking constitutional abolition of the death penalty. Some supporters of the death penalty continue to argue, as they have since Furman v. Georgia, that the death penalty is constitutional because the Fifth Amendment explicitly contemplates it. The appeal of this argument is obvious, but Blocher argues that its strength is largely superficial and also mostly irrelevant to the claims being made against the constitutionality of capital punishment. At most, the references to the death penalty in the Fifth Amendment may reflect a founding-era assumption that …

Toward A More Loving Framework For Literacy Education, Clio Stearns Jul 2016

Toward A More Loving Framework For Literacy Education, Clio Stearns

Occasional Paper Series

In this provocative and moving essay, Clio Stearns, a Bank Street educated teacher, toggles back and forth between moments with her young daughter who daily grows more attached to books and moments with her fifth grade students who remain disconnected from her carefully chosen texts. Refracted through a psychoanalytic lens and a deeply caring heart, Stearns’ description of her classroom practices offers a canny account of all that she must give up in order to see through and past her students’ resistance. In a surprising turn of events she learns to join with her students as they become curious …
