Can Skeletal Morphology Support New Molecular Phylogenies Of Antedonidae (Crinoidea: Comatulida)?, Brenna Hays
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Antedonidae (Crinoidea: Comatulida) is the largest of extant crinoid families; it currently includes ~155 accepted species in 50 genera and accounts for ~23% of extant crinoid species (~29% of feather stars) and 27% of genera. Molecular phylogenies have returned the family as polyphyletic, with several clades scattered among non-antedonid sister groups (Hemery 2011, Hemery et al. 2013, Rouse et al. in prep.). Traditional morphological characteristics are thus inadequate for reconstructing relationships among taxa. SEM imaging was used in an effort to discover new diagnostic features that will support the molecular data, focusing on skeletal ossicles within the calyx, specifically the …

The moringa tree Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree cultivated across the lowland dry tropics worldwide for its nutritious leaves. Despite its nutritious reputation, there has been no systematic survey of the variation in leaf nutritional quality across M. oleifera grown worldwide, or of the other species of the genus. To guide informed use of moringa, we surveyed protein, macro-, and micro- nutrients across 67 common garden samples of 12 Moringa taxa, including 23 samples of M. oleifera. Moringa oleifera, M. concanensis, M. stenopetala, an M. concanensis X oleifera hybrid, and M. longituba were highest in protein, with M. …

Haloarchaeal Species Genesis: Diversity, Recombination, And Evolution, Nikhil Ram Mohan
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation discusses a working model for species genesis in Haloarchaea based on evidence obtained from multiscale analyses of Haloarchaeal communities and populations. First, a spatial distribution analysis of the haloarchaeal communities using both PCR amplified environmental gene marker as well as metagenomic comparisons reveal unique haloarchaeal communities in geographically distant hypersaline environments. Similar to eukaryotes, endemism is apparent in haloarchaea. However, unlike the eukaryotes, there is neither a distance-decay relationship nor is there a similarity in haloarchaeal communities based on whether they are from lakes or salterns. Second, temporal analysis on one haloarchaeal community reveals stability in the community …

Toxoplasma gondii actively invades host cells and establishes a parasitophorous vacuole (PV) that accumulates many proteins secreted by the dense granules (GRA proteins). To date, at least 23 GRA proteins have been reported, though the function(s) of most of these proteins still remains unknown. We targeted gene knockouts at ten GRA gene loci (GRA1-10) to investigate the cellular roles and essentiality of these classical GRA proteins during acute infection in the virulent type I RH strain. While eight of these genes (GRA2-9) were successfully knocked out, targeted knockouts at the GRA1 and GRA10 loci were not …

Typically, 0.1% of the total number of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the main olfactory epithelium express the same odorant receptor (OR) in a singular fashion and their axons coalesce into homotypic glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Here, we have dramatically increased the total number of OSNs expressing specific cloned OR coding sequences by multimerizing a 21-bp sequence encompassing the predicted homeodomain binding site sequence, TAATGA, known to be essential in OR gene choice. Singular gene choice is maintained in these ‘‘MouSensors.’’ In vivo synaptopHluorin imaging of odor-induced responses by known M71 ligands shows functional glomerular activation in an M71 …

Minimizing The Dynamic Load Of High Contact Ratio Spur Gear Using Profile Modification, Srijana Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
One of the major concern in the design of power transmission gear is the reduction of gear dynamic load. Research on gear noise and vibration has revealed that the basic mechanics of noise generated from gearing is gear box vibration excited by the dynamic load. This thesis studies the effect of tooth spacing errors on the dynamic load of high contact ratio spur gear subjected to unideal loading conditions. Spur gear is the simplest kind gear available. Spur gears have their teeth parallel to the axis of rotation and are used for transmitting power between two parallel shafts. Three types …

Do Forest Commons Contribute To International Environmental Initiatives? A Socio-Ecological Analysis Of Nepalese Forest Commons In View Of Redd+, Harisharan Luintel
Dissertations and Theses
Forests in developing countries have the potential to contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change, promote biodiversity and support the livelihoods of rural, local people. Approximately one-fourth of such forests are under the control of local communities, which primarily manage forests for subsistence and to meet their livelihood needs. The trend of bottom-up community control is increasing through the adoption of decentralization reforms over the last 40 years. In contrast, the United Nations has introduced the top-down program, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) for the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon and the sustainable management of …

A Portrait Of Raymond Brutinel As A Young Man (Part I): The Future Machine Gun Commander In Edmonton, Alberta, 1905-1914, Cameron Pulsifer
Canadian Military History
Raymond Brutinel remains one of the Canadian Corps’ most intriguing and little understood senior officers. A fair amount has been written about his service with the Canadian Corps, which generally portrays him as a significant commander and military innovator. But his life before he joined the Canadian military largely remains a mystery, which Brutinel himself did little to clear up. He had emigrated from France to Edmonton, Alberta in 1905 and lived there until the outbreak of war. Yet little is known in detail about this formative period of his life. Based largely upon Edmonton-based sources, the following aims to …

Replacement of fishmeal with soy-based protein alternatives has produced the need to determine nutritional requirements of aquaculture species to appropriately formulate and supplement aquafeeds. Compared to fishmeal, soybean meal is deficient in methionine, an essential amino acid. Thus, the methionine requirement of a high-value and soy-tolerant species, the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) at a near harvestable size (>200 g) was evaluated. Six semi-purified, isonitrogenous and isocaloric, experimental diets were formulated based on the whole-body amino acid (AA) profile of the Florida pompano with incremental inclusions of methionine (0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.1, 1.3, and 1.5 g 100 g …

New Findings
- What is the central question of this study? What is the functional relevance of OPN isoform expression in muscle pathology?
- What is the main finding and its importance? The full‐length human OPN‐a isoform is the most pro‐inflammatory isoform in the muscle microenvironment, acting on macrophages and myoblasts in an RGD‐integrin‐dependent manner. OPN‐a upregulates expression of tenascin‐C (TNC), a known Toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist. Blocking TLR4 signalling inhibits the pro‐inflammatory effects of OPN‐a, suggesting that a potential mechanism of OPN action is by promoting TNC–TLR4 signalling.
Although osteopontin (OPN) is an important mediator of muscle remodelling in health …

Reproductive Ecology Of Dragonfishes (Family: Stomiidae) In The Gulf Of Mexico, Alex D. Marks
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The most speciose group of fishes in the Gulf of Mexico is the dragonfishes (Family: Stomiidae). These fishes are dominant mesopelagic predators occurring throughout the world’s oceans, including the Antarctic seas. Little is known regarding their reproductive ecology, a consequence attributed to insufficient sample sizes of mature adults due to inadequacies of sampling gear; larger, sexually mature stomiid adults are more adept at net avoidance, thereby obfuscating synoptic reproductive biology studies. Between 2010-2011, the Offshore Nekton Sampling and Analysis Program was initiated in the northern Gulf of Mexico over all four seasons using a discrete-depth sampling system (MOCNESS) and a …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper examines the way in which non-human animals are constructed as unwanted object through human language, culture and economic system, and how such construction in return affects the lives of the animals. The paper aims to think through the entangled interconnected relationship among animals, humans and environment on both the conceptual and material levels. It argues that animals are deeply enmeshed in capitalist system while the animal-garbage connection can be traced in etymological, cultural, and economic and ecological systems. In order to reflect on our culture, globalization, and modernity, an Indian documentary film, The Plastic Cow, by Kunal Vohra, …

Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University
We document the first record of Hypostomus cf. niceforoi in Central America. Two specimens of these suckermouth armored catfishes were collected in Lake Nicaragua (Nicaragua) and identified as H. cf. niceforoi. Hypostomus niceforoi is endemic to Andean streams of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru. We hypothesize that its introduction in Central America is related to the aquarium trade, as is the case of other armored catfish species introductions.

How Does Composting At School Change The Way Middle School Students Perceive Their Ability To Positively Impact The Earth?, Katie Lynn Pangborn
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project is: how does composting at school change the way middle school students perceive their ability to positively impact the earth? The motivating factor for this capstone was the lack of awareness middle school students seem to have in regards to the waste they create and how to handle their waste. This capstone delves into the impacts of service learning combined with environmentalism. Since service learning is most impactful when it is student-led, students brainstormed ideas around waste management at their school and concluded that composting should be part of the plan. Students designed, …
