Loving The Unlovable Body In Yamanaka's Saturday Night At The Pahala Theatre, Christa Baiada Sep 2016

Loving The Unlovable Body In Yamanaka's Saturday Night At The Pahala Theatre, Christa Baiada

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Lois-Ann Yamanaka’s award-winning yet remarkably neglected Saturday Night at the Pahala Theatre (1993) explores female adolescence and coming of age in a rich, polyphonic collection of verse novellas. “Loving the Unlovable Body” focuses on Yamanaka’s treatment of this transition as a fully embodied, fraught, and often painful experience by expicating the uses of several tropes used to express girls’ experiences of their bodies: eating, voice, eyes, fragmentation, and marking/naming. These metaphors contribute to the development of a complex range of possibilities from devastating to hopeful, presented in juxtaposition and interplay, for girls’ relationships to their culturally denigrated bodies and the …

How Did The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Affect Coastal And Continental Shelf Ecosystems Of The Gulf Of Mexico?, Steven Murawski, John E. Fleeger, William F. Patterson Iii, Chuanmin Hu, Kendra L. Daly, Isabel C. Romero, Gerardo Toro-Farmer Sep 2016

How Did The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Affect Coastal And Continental Shelf Ecosystems Of The Gulf Of Mexico?, Steven Murawski, John E. Fleeger, William F. Patterson Iii, Chuanmin Hu, Kendra L. Daly, Isabel C. Romero, Gerardo Toro-Farmer

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill originated at the base of the continental shelf in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM), but large quantities of the oil were transported to the shelf (≤200 m water depth) and into coastal waters (herein defined as ≤15 km from the coast). Water-column effects were generally limited to the period of the ongoing oil releases, although, due to an extensive oil sedimentation event (“dirty blizzard”), effects on the benthos have the potential to be chronic, especially in soft sediments. Impacts on phytoplankton, zooplankton, and ichthyoplankton were relatively short-lived, and the abundance and species composition …

Selecting Exemplar Recordings Of American Sign Language Non-Manual Expressions For Animation Synthesis Based On Manual Sign Timing, Hernisa Kacorri, Matt Huenerfauth Sep 2016

Selecting Exemplar Recordings Of American Sign Language Non-Manual Expressions For Animation Synthesis Based On Manual Sign Timing, Hernisa Kacorri, Matt Huenerfauth

Presentations and other scholarship

Animations of sign language can increase the accessibility of information for people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), but prior work has demonstrated that accurate non-manual expressions (NMEs), consisting of face and head movements, are necessary to produce linguistically accurate animations that are easy to understand. When synthesizing animation, given a sequence of signs performed on the hands (and their timing), we must select an NME performance. Given a corpus of facial motion-capture recordings of ASL sentences with annotation of the timing of signs in the recording, we investigate methods (based on word count and on delexicalized sign …

Multi-Modality American Sign Language Recognition, Chenyang Zhang, Yingli Tian, Matt Huenerfauth Sep 2016

Multi-Modality American Sign Language Recognition, Chenyang Zhang, Yingli Tian, Matt Huenerfauth

Presentations and other scholarship

American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual gestural language which is used by many people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. In this paper, we design a visual recognition system based on action recognition techniques to recognize individual ASL signs. Specifically, we focus on recognition of words in videos of continuous ASL signing. The proposed framework combines multiple signal modalities because ASL includes gestures of both hands, body movements, and facial expressions. We have collected a corpus of RBG + depth videos of multi-sentence ASL performances, from both fluent signers and ASL students; this corpus has served as a source for …

Meridians 14:2, Sonia E. Alvarez, Kia Lilly Caldwell, Agustín Lao-Montes

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

As anthropologist Christen Smith contends in her contribution to this issue, "Because of the tendency to over-emphasize the experiences of English-speaking Black women" within the global project of Black feminist studies, Afro-Latin American women's voices have been "muted," despite the fact that they "have made significant theoretical and philosophical interventions that could potentially change the way that we think about gendered racial politics transnationally." Cognizant that feminist academics and activists in the United States and the global North, including many U.S.-African Americans and other feminists of color, often lack access to the critical insights and innovations developed by Black feminist …

Insights Into The Molecular Roles Of Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans (Hspgs-Syndecans) In Autocrine And Paracrine Growth Factor Signaling In The Pathogenesis Of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Rajendra Ghardbaran Sep 2016

Insights Into The Molecular Roles Of Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans (Hspgs-Syndecans) In Autocrine And Paracrine Growth Factor Signaling In The Pathogenesis Of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Rajendra Ghardbaran

Publications and Research

Syndecans (SDC, SYND) comprise a group of four structurally related type 1 transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) that play important roles in tumorigenic processes. SDCs exert signaling via their protein cores and their conserved transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains or by forming complexes with growth factors (GFs). In classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (cHL), a lymphoid neoplasm of predominantly B cell origin, SDC1 and SDC4 are the active SDCs, and a number of GF (vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, etc.) signaling pathways have been studied. However, despite extensive pre-clinical and clinical research on SDC-mediated GF signaling in many cancer types, there …

Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Assessment Of The Las Palmas, Chile Tailings Failure, Tristan Reyes Gebhart Sep 2016

Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Assessment Of The Las Palmas, Chile Tailings Failure, Tristan Reyes Gebhart

Master's Theses

Assessment of post-liquefaction residual strength is needed for the development of empirically-based, predictive correlations for earthquake engineering design. Previous practice commonly assigned negligible strengths to liquefied materials for engineering analysis, producing overly-conservative designs. Increasingly available case history data, and improved analytical tools have allowed for more accurate and less overly-conservative estimation of soil residual strength, improving empirical predictive models. This study provides a new case history to the limited suite of (approximately 30) liquefaction failure case histories available for post-liquefaction in-situ strength predictive correlations.

This case history documents the Las Palmas gold mine tailings dam failure, resulting from seismic-induced liquefaction …

Physically Effective Fiber Threshold, Apparent Digestibility, And Novel Fecal Microbiome Identification Of The Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys Pardalis), Breanna Paige Modica

Master's Theses

Particle size distribution of diet, feces, and change from diet to feces, as well as apparent digestibility (aDig, %) of selected nutrients, and novel fecal microbiome identification of mature female leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis, n = 16) fed exclusively one of three, nutritionally complete, pelleted diets were evaluated in a blind, complete randomized design study. Two diets included insoluble fiber (powdered cellulose) consisting of either 2.0 mm or 0.2 mm length. Insoluble fiber provides nutritional and physical benefits to both the animal host and the microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fiber length was used as a …

A 3-D Multiplex Paper-Microfluidic Platform, Mitchell Patrick Young Sep 2016

A 3-D Multiplex Paper-Microfluidic Platform, Mitchell Patrick Young

Master's Theses

3-D paper-based microfluidic devices (micoPADs) are small and portable devices made out of paper that offer a promising platform for diagnostic applications outside of a laboratory. These devices are easy to use, low cost, require no power source, and capable of detecting multiple targets simultaneously. The work in this thesis demonstrated the ability of a 3-D paper-microfluidic platform to simultaneously detect 5 targets. Rubber cord stock was used in conjunction with an acrylic housing unit to apply pressure along the edge of the channel. The indirect pressure application was successful in promoting vertical fluid flow between layers. Average channel development …

The Curative Power Of Play: The Voices Of Therapists Around The World, Nancy Riedel Bowers, Winnie Pak Wan Yeung, Anna Lee Bowers

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

It is important for all therapists to be culturally sensitive to children and their eco-systems as well as to be aware of the current trends and the changing application of play as a healing agent. The focus of this study is on the development of a current description of play by therapists from a global perspective through a thematic analysis of focus groups resulting in an explanation of how play contributes to healing and the practice of therapy. In this study, the naturalistic method of qualitative research (Bowers, 2009; Lincoln & Guba, 1985) was applied to the study of play …

Message from President: Academe is not immune to the new epidemic of affiliation. Often enough, thinking people choose careers in higher education owing in part to a desire to escape the avalanche of demographic labels—race; class; gender; ethnicity; income; educational level; zip code and associated social status; favorite URLs—that rolls over individuality and buries free thinking. Academe, many hope, provides the last bastion for individual achievement. The quest for liberty, whether from imposed group identities or mass movements, is, as revolutionaries soon discover, not so easy as expected. Even dissidents want to belong to something. Surprisingly, academic folk prize affiliation …

Effects Of Estradiol-17Β Or Dihydrotestosterone On Cell Types In Equine Pituitaries Staining For Prolactin, Growth Hormone, Or Both, M. Saeed Rahmanian, Donald L. Thompson

Faculty Publications

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. Ovariectomized pony mares were treated with vehicle (controls), estradiol-17β (estradiol), or dihydrotestosterone (DHT) daily for 21 days in summer, and the pituitary content of prolactin and growth hormone (GH) and the numbers of cells staining immunocytochemically for prolactin (lactotropes), GH (somatotropes), or both hormones (mammosomatotropes) were assessed. Treatments did not alter (P > .1) plasma prolactin concentrations over the 21 days. Estradiol treatment increased (P < .05) the pituitary content of prolactin several-fold relative to controls and DHT-treated ponies. The number of lactotropes was also increased (P < .05), as was the number of mammosomatotropes (P < .05). Treatment with DHT did not alter (P > .1) any prolactin characteristic. The number of somatotropes was not altered by either treatment (P > .1) nor was the pituitary content of GH (P > .1). Given that the mass of prolactin accumulation …

Short-Interval Cortical Inhibition And Rhetoric And The Law, Or The Law Of Rhetoric: How Countries Oppose Novel Tobacco Control Measures At The World Trade Organization, Raphael Lencucha, Jeffrey Drope, Ronald Labonte

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

The tobacco industry has developed an extensive array of strategies and arguments to prevent or weaken government regulation. These strategies and arguments are well documented at the domestic level. However, there remains a need to examine how these arguments are reflected in the challenges waged by governments within the World Trade Organization (WTO). Decisions made at the WTO have the potential to shape how countries govern. Our analysis was conducted on two novel tobacco control measures: tobacco additives bans (Canada, United States and Brazil) and plain, standardized packaging of tobacco products (Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, EU and UK). We analyzed …

Optimizing Gdna Purification And Qpcr Techniques For Specific Detection And Enumeration Of Probiotic Bacteria, Katelynn C. Lee, Jennifer Vanderkelen, Christopher Kitts

STAR Program Research Presentations

Probiotics are live microorganisms, like bacteria and yeast, which are thought to provide health benefits when ingested. Large manufacturers produce blends of probiotics for supplementing the diets of agriculturally important animals. Commercial probiotic products are labeled with the number of cells present at the time of manufacture. Our assignment was to develop an assay which can be used to quantify the number of specific lactic acid bacteria present in certain probiotic products, thus verifying the number reported on the product labels. This quantification process involves isolating genomic DNA (gDNA) from the given samples and then running the DNA through a …

Faculty Publications

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. Plant biomass has become an important source of bio-renewable energy in modern society. The molecular structure of plant cell walls is difficult to characterize by most atomic-resolution techniques due to the insoluble and disordered nature of the cell wall. Solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy is uniquely suited for studying native hydrated plant cell walls at the molecular level with chemical resolution. Significant progress has been made in the last five years to elucidate the molecular structures and interactions of cellulose and matrix polysaccharides in plant cell walls. These studies have focused on primary cell walls of growing …

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS. Identifying drivers of infectious disease patterns and impacts at the broadest scales of organisation is one of the most crucial challenges for modern science, yet answers to many fundamental questions remain elusive. These include what factors commonly facilitate transmission of pathogens to novel host species, what drives variation in immune investment among host species, and more generally what drives global patterns of parasite diversity and distribution? Here we consider how the perspectives and tools of macroecology, a field that investigates patterns and processes at broad spatial, temporal and taxonomic scales, are expanding scientific …

Plants producing antisense or double-stranded RNA molecules that target specific genes of eukaryotic pests or pathogens can become protected from their attack. This beneficial effect was also reported for plant-fungus interactions and is believed to reflect uptake of the RNAs by the fungus via an as yet unknown mechanism, followed by target gene silencing. Here we report that wheat plants pre-infected with Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) strains containing antisense sequences against target genes of the Fusarium head blight (FHB) fungus F. culmorum caused a reduction of corresponding transcript levels in the pathogen and reduced disease symptoms. Stable transgenic wheat …

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric disorder that often features impairments in cognitive function, and these cognitive symptoms can be important determinants of functional ability. Vortioxetine is a multimodal antidepressant that may improve some aspects of cognitive function in patients with MDD, including attention, processing speed, executive function, and memory. However, the cause of these effects is unclear, and there are several competing theories on the underlying mechanism, notably including regionally-selective downstream enhancement of glutamate neurotransmission and increased acetylcholine (ACh) neurotransmission. The current work sought to evaluate the ACh hypothesis by examining vortioxetine's ability to reverse scopolamine-induced impairments …
