The Rise And Rise Of Neurosurgery: Academic Journey Of A Young Department In A Developing Country, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim, Hamid Hussain Rai Hussain Rai

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

The Section of Neurosurgery, part of the Department of Surgery, and the Mind and Brain Service Line at the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, has come a long way since its recognition in mid-90s. Although the program itself was recognized in late 90’s and the first resident graduated in 2004, it wasn't until 2008 that it assumed its current shape of a formal, structured training program. Currently it has six full-time faculty members, one part-time faculty member, two instructors, and a team of 12 residents. Following are few of the innovations introduced within the program over the last few years.

Did Bp Atone For Its Transgressions? Expanding Theory Of “Ethical Apology In Crisis Communication, Audra Diers-Lawson, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Ethical communication during crisis response is often assessed by external perceptions of the organization's intentions, rather than an assessment of the organization's communicative behaviors. This can easily lead researchers to draw editorial conclusions about an organization's ethics in crisis response rather than accurately describing its communicative behaviors. The case of BP's 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico provides a prime example for the importance of accurately assessing the ethical content of an organization's crisis response because the ethics of BP's response have been discussed in news and academic sources; yet little direct examination of the ethical content in …

Gene Duplication And Divergence Produce Divergent Mhc Genotypes Without Disassortative Mating, Donald C. Dearborn, Andrea B. Gager, Andrew G. Mcarthur, Morgan E. Gilmour, Elena Mandzhukova, Robert A. Mauck Sep 2016

Gene Duplication And Divergence Produce Divergent Mhc Genotypes Without Disassortative Mating, Donald C. Dearborn, Andrea B. Gager, Andrew G. Mcarthur, Morgan E. Gilmour, Elena Mandzhukova, Robert A. Mauck

All Faculty Scholarship

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) exhibit heterozygote advantage in immune defence, which in turn can select for MHC-disassortative mate choice. However, many species lack this expected pattern of MHC-disassortative mating. A possible explanation lies in evolutionary processes following gene duplication: if two duplicated MHC genes become functionally diverged from each other, offspring will inherit diverse multilocus genotypes even under random mating. We used locus-specific primers for high-throughput sequencing of two expressed MHC Class II B genes in Leach's storm-petrels, Oceanodroma leucorhoa, and found that exon 2 alleles fall into two gene-specific monophyletic clades. We tested for disassortative vs. …

Hearing Is Believing: Birds Learn Fear, Christopher B. Sturdy, Darren S. Proppe

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Although it is known that animals attend to the vocalizations of others (referred to as eavesdropping), what has been missing, or at least left experimentally unproven, until now is whether animals can learn new associations between a signal and a threat. Here Magrath and colleagues (Current Biology, 25(15), 2047–2050, 2015) have for the first time conducted a field experiment that demonstrates just this: superb fairy-wrens learned to associate a novel vocalization with a predator.

Gouldian Finch Breeding Surveys 2016: Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project - Weaber Plain Development Area, Sarah R. Pryke

Irrigated Agricultural Development in the North

As part of the requirement for State approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Gouldian Finch Management Plan (GFMP), a baseline assessment and on-going monitoring of the endangered Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae) is required during the construction and operation of the Ord River Irrigation Area Weaber Plain Development Project in the eastern Kimberley, Western Australia. This report details the findings from surveys of Gouldian finches during their annual breeding season (2016).

A Nominal Credit: Why Donor Recognition Should Not Limit The Deductibility Of Section 170 Charitable Contributions, Benjamin J. Imdieke

ACTEC Law Journal

In figuring their federal income tax liability, individuals are generally entitled to deduct from gross income the amount of their charitable contributions. Charities often recognize such donors for their gifts by associating donor names with the projects such donors make possible. In 2015, Lincoln Center made headlines when it recognized David Geffen's $100 million gift by placing his name on what the Center had previously named Avery Fisher Hall. The story renewed a debate over whether donor recognition should affect the amount of such donor's charitable deduction and, is so, how. This article argues that donor recognition should not affect …

Summoning The State: Northern Farmers And The Transformation Of American Politics In The Mid-Nineteenth Century, Ariel Ron Sep 2016

Summoning The State: Northern Farmers And The Transformation Of American Politics In The Mid-Nineteenth Century, Ariel Ron

History Faculty Publications

A vast agricultural reform movement emerged in the northeastern countryside during the antebellum era. The massive popularity of state and county agricultural fairs, starting in the late 1840s, formed the most visible manifestation of this phenomenon, while the earlier rise of an independent agricultural press formed its essential precondition. Surprisingly, historians have paid relatively little attention either to the social determinants or to the political consequences of the agricultural reform movement. Socially, the movement was rooted in a set of economic conditions and the thick print and associational networks characteristic of what I call the “Greater Northeast.” This article thus …

Toward A Thomistic Environmental Ethic: How Aquinas's Metaethic Provides The Groundwork For An Environmentally And Zoologically Responsible Moral System, William Merle Green Sep 2016

Toward A Thomistic Environmental Ethic: How Aquinas's Metaethic Provides The Groundwork For An Environmentally And Zoologically Responsible Moral System, William Merle Green

Masters Theses

While the trend in contemporary discussions of environmental ethics is often to dispense with traditional anthropocentric conceptions of morality in favor of more biologically and ecologically inclusive perspectives, I will argue that Natural Law Theory and Virtue Ethics, both integral components of the moral philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, provide the groundwork for an ecologically and zoologically responsible ethic. Thus, utilizing the core of Aquinas’s ethical system, I will attempt to construct a robust moral framework that is Thomistic in every important sense while at the same time satisfies the sufficiency conditions for a successful environmental code of conduct.

A Documented Occurrence Of Black Rail (Laterallus Jamaicensis) In Nebraska, Cody Mcgregor, Eric Bruster, Mary Bomberger Brown, Lauren R. Dinan, Joel G. Jorgensen

Nebraska Bird Review

Black Rails (Laterallus jamaicensis) are the smallest of the rails found in North America. Even though they are broadly distributed in coastal tidal and inland freshwater marshes, they are rarely seen and consequently are poorly known. They prefer areas of moist soil interspersed with scattered small pools of shallow water surrounded by fine-stemmed rushes, grasses, and sedges for use during migratory stopover and nesting. All populations of Black Rail have declined precipitously over the past century due to the draining of marshes and wetlands and demands on water resources. In 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated …

Summer Field Report, June–July 2016, W. Ross Silcock Sep 2016

Summer Field Report, June–July 2016, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This was a routine summer, if there is such a thing. Items of interest involved some rarities, most of which were distributional and temporal, some range changes, and a few issues that triggered more discussion than usual.

The only mega-rarity was Nebraska's second Swallow-tailed Kite; this species has apparently moved northward on the Great Plains in the last couple of years. Distributional rarities included the 3rd record for the east of Long-billed Curlew, a White-eyed Vireo in Cherry Co, the 2nd fall Yellow-throated Vireo record for the Panhandle, the 6th Cherry Co record for Purple Martin, and the 5th and …
