Management Strategies In Farrowing House To Improve Piglet Pre-Weaning Survival And Growth, Ramon Muns Vila, Padet Tummaruk Sep 2016

Management Strategies In Farrowing House To Improve Piglet Pre-Weaning Survival And Growth, Ramon Muns Vila, Padet Tummaruk

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Post-partum and lactation are the most complex periods in the swine production chain. Newborn pigs are highly vulnerable due to relatively low body weight at birth and physiological immaturity. Most of the management strategies performed in farrowing houses are oriented to ensure a proper level of colostrum intake by the piglets. Colostrum is essential as an energy source and to provide passive immunity to piglets. Different farrowing supervising protocols have been comprehensively investigated to reduce early mortality as well as to assist newborn piglets in obtaining an optimal amount of colostrum and milk. However, little is known of the benefits …

Differential Protein Expression In Haemolymph Of First-Stage Red Sternum Mud Crabs (Scylla Serrata), Pattarawadee Srimeetian, Suriyan Tunkijjanukij

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is one of the important commercial aquatic animals in Thailand. A cause of death in crab farm is red sternum syndrome. The aim of this research was to characterize differential protein expression in the haemolymph of normal mud crabs and first-stage red sternum mud crabs using gel filtration chromatography on a Sephacryl S-200 chromatography column for protein purification. Results showed that the haemolymph of the red sternum mud crabs presented two fractions (F1 and F2) that were not found in that of the normal mud crabs. Subsequently, these peak fractions were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) …

Prevalence Of Clostridium Perfringens Β2-Toxin In Sheep And Goat Population In Punjab, Pakistan, Mudassar Mohiuddin, Zahid Iqbal, Sajjad Ur Rahman

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Clostridium perfringens presents persistent threat to small animals in causing moderate to severe enterotoxemia. The pathogenicity of C. perfringens depends on the production of four major toxins. In addition to the major toxins, beta2 (β2) toxin, a minor toxin, is also produced by some strains of C. perfringens. In this study, a total of 107 fecal samples collected from healthy and diseased sheep and goats were cultured and processed for biochemical analysis. On the basis of biochemical characterization, 61 isolates were confirmed as C. perfringens. In order to detect C. perfringens types, multiplex PCR assay was carried out for the …

Genetic parameters were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure based …

A Phylum-Level Phylogenetic Classification Of Zygomycete Fungi Based On Genome-Scale Data, Merlin M. White Sep 2016

A Phylum-Level Phylogenetic Classification Of Zygomycete Fungi Based On Genome-Scale Data, Merlin M. White

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Zygomycete fungi were classified as a single phylum, Zygomycota, based on sexual reproduction by zygospores, frequent asexual reproduction by sporangia, absence of multicellular sporocarps, and production of coenocytic hyphae, all with some exceptions. Molecular phylogenies based on one or a few genes did not support themonophyly of the phylum, however, and the phylum was subsequently abandoned. Here we present phylogenetic analyses of a genome-scale data set for 46 taxa, including 25 zygomycetes and 192 proteins, and we demonstrate that zygomycetes comprise two major clades that form a paraphyletic grade. A formal phylogenetic classification is proposed herein and includes two phyla, …

Reconsidering Attachment In Context Of Culture: Review Of Attachment Studies In Japan, Kazuko Y. Behrens

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This paper revisits the attachment controversies, reexamining the debates regarding attachment phenomenon being universal or culture-specific, and reconsiders whether it is possible to conduct culturally sensitive attachment research in non-Western societies while incorporating systematic empirical designs to enable replications across cultures. The goal of this paper is to improve our understanding about the clash between the fields and achieve consensus regarding the value of attachment research while acknowledging the limitations of attachment research in certain cultural contexts. The cultural debate will focus on one non-Western culture – Japan – where the controversy began. Finally, this review proposes the way in …

The Effects Of Surrounding Positive And Negative Experiences On Risk Taking, Sandra L. Schneider, Sandra Kauffman, Andrea Ranieri Sep 2016

The Effects Of Surrounding Positive And Negative Experiences On Risk Taking, Sandra L. Schneider, Sandra Kauffman, Andrea Ranieri

Psychology Faculty Publications

Two experiments explored how the context of recently experiencing an abundance of positive or negative outcomes within a series of choices influences risk preferences. In each experiment, choices were made between a series of pairs of hypothetical 50/50 two-outcome gambles. Participants experienced a control set of mixed outcome gamble pairs intermingled with a randomly assigned set of (a) all-gain, (b) all-loss, or (c) a mixture of all-gain and all-loss gamble pairs. In both experiments, a positive experience led to reduced risk taking in the control set and a negative experience led to increased risk taking. These patterns persisted even after …

Bringing Mothers And Fathers Together: Undergraduate Studies In Anthropology And Sociology, Angela Castañeda, Matthew Oware Sep 2016

Bringing Mothers And Fathers Together: Undergraduate Studies In Anthropology And Sociology, Angela Castañeda, Matthew Oware

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

As social scientists in a combined Sociology and Anthropology department at a small liberal arts institution, we approach research questions on mothering and fathering from our respective disciplines. In the summer of 2014 we made plans to experiment with a first year seminar that would bring our distinct courses together: Oware’s Man Up: Unpacking Manhood and Masculinity, and Castañeda’s Global Perspectives on Reproduction and Childbirth. In the fall of 2014, we combined our courses over two-weeks to discuss the roles of fathering and mothering in our research agendas. As we suspected, our courses were unevenly represented on their own with …

Genetic Amplification: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Its Problems And Uses, Drew Mcwilliams Sep 2016

Genetic Amplification: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Its Problems And Uses, Drew Mcwilliams

Honors Projects

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), also called real-time PCR, has become a cornerstone of DNA analysis, enabling detection of minute amounts of nucleic acids (Whittwer et. al, 1997). In 1983, Kary Mullis developed a new method of genetic amplification—the polymerase chain reaction [PCR] (Bartlett & Stirling, 2003). A little over 20 years later, PCR now is a common and often crucial technique used in medical and biological research laboratories for a variety of applications. Some of these applications include DNA cloning for sequencing, DNA-based phylogeny, the diagnosis of hereditary diseases, the identification of genetic fingerprints (used in forensic sciences and …

Translanguaging In The Writing Of Emergent Multilinguals, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba Sep 2016

Translanguaging In The Writing Of Emergent Multilinguals, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article discusses the findings of an empirical study that investigated the writing practices in a multilingual, rural, fourth-grade classroom in Kenya. The study was undergirded by Bakhtin’s heteroglossia. Analysis of texts indicated that these emergent multilinguals used multiple semiotic resources to maximize the chances of meeting the communicative goals through translanguaging. However, the translanguaging process in writing was a tension-filled process in terms of language separation and correctness. The emergent multilingual writer went through tensions in the process of finding a balance between authorial intentions and the authoritarian single voicedness required by the school and the national curriculum. The …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The aim of current research work on micro air vehicles is to realize their autonomous control, i.e. building a library for a lookup table that would apply to micro electronics. In doing so, comprehensive flight tests need to be carried out. In this study, a four-wing flapping MAV is built and a multi-discipline approach is used to design the MAV model. Precision manufacturing technology is introduced here. The finished micro air vehicle has a weight of 8 g and is tested for flight by remote control. The micro air vehicle can perform both hovering and forward flight with high maneuverability. …

Antipsychotic Drugs On Maternal Behavior In Rats, Ming Li Sep 2016

Antipsychotic Drugs On Maternal Behavior In Rats, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rat maternal behavior is a complex social behavior. Many clinically used antipsychotic drugs, including the typical drug haloperidol and atypical drugs clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, aripiprazole and amisulpride, all disrupt active maternal responses (e.g. pup retrieval, pup licking and nest building) to various extents. In this review, I present a summary of recent studies on the behavioral effects and neurobiological mechanisms of antipsychotic action on maternal behavior in rats. I argue that antipsychotic drugs at the clinical relevant doses disrupt active maternal responses primarily by suppressing maternal motivation. Atypical drug-induced sedation also contributes to their disruptive effects, especially that on …

Global Civil Society: Challenges Of Security And Policing, Brian F. Kingshott, Jan B. Kingshott Sep 2016

Global Civil Society: Challenges Of Security And Policing, Brian F. Kingshott, Jan B. Kingshott

Peer Reviewed Publications

Globalization broadly refers to the expansion of global linkages, the organization of social life, global consciousness; and an expectation of global societal norms and behaviors underpinned by just laws. The democratization of established and emerging nation states identified challenges of security for its citizens. Emerging nation states require a stable government supported by a comprehensive security apparatus that supports its citizenry. That support is provided by a policing paradigm that embraces the state and private security agencies. The authors discuss the challenges facing the security industry and a law enforcement community policing paradigm that is inclusive, transparent, and accountable.

Lived Experiences Of Reintegration: A Study Of How Former Prisoners Experienced Reintegration In A Local Context., Sylvia Brand Sep 2016

Lived Experiences Of Reintegration: A Study Of How Former Prisoners Experienced Reintegration In A Local Context., Sylvia Brand

Doctoral

Notwithstanding prison populations generally being characterised by a high degree of marginalisation and socio-economic disadvantage –– the concept of reintegration pertains to the notion that prisoners eventually return to the community to live crimefree and productive lives. That so many are outside the realm of mainstream society, it can be argued that to expect prisoners to “reintegrate” back into society poses somewhat of a conundrum –– as most were never fully integrated into society to begin with. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach this thesis investigates the experience of reintegration in a small city (population = 119,230) from in-depth interviews with …
