The Zika Virus In The United States: A Comprehensive Review, Daniel R. Lindsey, Martin H. Greenberg
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: With a series of outbreaks spanning the globe, the Zika virus has transitioned, in a short time, from an obscure virus to a public health emergency. Locally transmitted Zika has reached the United States, leading to increased concern regarding further transmission and the potential impact on public health.
Methods: The present study was conducted to examine the propagation and effects of Zika in the United States by reviewing published literature regarding Zika in conjunction with updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To gauge the regional response, including prevention and control efforts, interviews were conducted with public …

A Guide To Developing National Mine Action Standards, Gichd
A Guide To Developing National Mine Action Standards, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
National Mine Action Standards (NMAS) are issued by a national mine action authority (NMAA) or an organisation acting on its behalf. They guide the management and implementation of mine action projects in in a safe, coordinated and efficient manner. NMAS must reflect the national situation posed by the hazards of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) both on land and in the water. They should also consider the environmental impact of these hazards, the situation of survivors and victims, as well as the legislation that supports a strategic response to these known hazards and their residual contamination. The aim …

Arthritis Is Developed In Borrelia-Primed And -Infected Mice Deficient Of Interleukin-17, Joseph Kuo, Thomas F. Warner, Erik Munson, Dean T. Nardelli, Ronald F. Schell
Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Interleukin-17 (IL-17) has been shown to participate in the development of Lyme arthritis in experimental mice. For example, neutralization of IL-17 with antibodies inhibits induction of arthritis in Borrelia-primed and -infected C57BL/6 wild-type mice. We hypothesized that mice lacking IL-17 would fail to develop Borrelia-induced arthritis. IL-17-deficient and wild-type C57BL/6 mice were primed with heat-inactivated Borrelia and then infected with viable spirochetes 3 weeks later. No swelling or major histopathological changes of the hind paws were detected in IL-17-deficient or wild-type mice that were primed with Borrelia or infected with viable spirochetes. By contrast, IL-17-deficient and wild-type mice …
Why Public Health Policy Should Redefine Consent To Assault And The Intentional Foul In Gladiator Sports, Jennifer A. Brobst
Why Public Health Policy Should Redefine Consent To Assault And The Intentional Foul In Gladiator Sports, Jennifer A. Brobst
Journal of Law and Health
This article considers in Part II the status and influence of public health research regarding the safety risks of gladiator sports and the field’s tendency to neglect the sports’ recognized medical and mental health benefits. In Part III, the historical trends in judicial interpretation of the scope of the criminal consent defense and civil doctrines of a privilege of consent to assault and assumption of the risk in the sports context are addressed. Finally, Part IV asserts the need to reform the civil and criminal defenses to intentional misconduct in sports through agency, judicial, and statutory reform, for the purpose …

La Influencia Del Mercado En La Crianza De Alpacas En Las Comunidades Alto Andinas De Pucará, Jessica Casale
Student Publications
Using a social-anthropological approach, through first-hand experiences living in the field and speaking with the subjects of this study, this paper investigates how the global economic market of alpaca wool has had effect on the traditional cultural practices of alpaca herders in the high Andean communities of Pucará, Peru. The results reveal a loss of traditional Andean herder’s practices and beliefs in the face of modernization, the inequality and exploitation within the wool market, and the influence of western economic ideologies. To preserve cultural practices and enhance the conditions of an alpaca herder, I suggest educating the communities on more …

Animals' foraging strategies are directly related to their fitness. Proposed models of optimal foraging assume that animals strategize in terms of maximizing benefits over the cost of acquiring resources. Ants are social insects that are comparable in biomass to humans inhabiting the plant. As such, it is crucial to understand the foraging strategies of such an influential member of the ecosystem. With the ever-increasing rate of urbanization and human encroachment, it is even more important to consider the foraging patterns of species inhabiting urban areas. In this study we investigate optimal foraging strategies in the pavement ant, Tetramorium caespitum. Specifically, …

Theology Faculty Research and Publications
The notes we have from Bernard Lonergan on the website www.bernardlonergan.com for his 1947-48 course on grace at the Jesuit Seminary in Toronto (now Regis College) are in two sets. They appear at 1600DTL040 and 16200DTL040. Translations by Michael Shields, with extensive editorial work by H. Daniel Monsour, are also available on the website, at 1600DTE040 and 16200DTE040. It is difficult, and in fact probably impossible without further external guidance, to put the two sets of notes in order and to relate them to each other. Fortunately, that guidance is available in the form of notes taken by Frederick Crowe …

Evolving Water Law And Management In The U.S.: Montana, Irma S. Russell
Faculty Works
The availability of water or the lack thereof has influenced the evolution of each state and the laws of each state. The development of water law naturally grew from the realities of water and other resources in different areas of the country and the need for water for industry, agriculture, and other enterprises. The evolution and development of water management in Montana provide a good example of water management in the western United States. From the beginnings of Montana and of the West as a region, water sat at the top of the list of essentials for human occupancy and …

Ham Sŏkhŏn And The Rise Of The Dynamistic Philosophy Of History In Korea, Halla Kim
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is show the systematic significance and function that the concept of history has in Ham Sokhon’s philosophy. Even though he was not the first philosopher of history in modern Korea, Ham enthusiastically presented and argued for the dynamic operation of the goal (telos) and force which he calls “Ssi-al”—the anonymous grassroots in the context of Korean history. In particular, the notion of suffering plays an important role in his teleological thinking, not by imposing a pessimistic outlook but rather as an integral part of the historical mission assigned to the Korean people. In the second …
Earth To Congress—The Pharmaceutical Patent System Is Broken—Pharma Patents Need Their Own Set Of Rules, Amber N. Sanges
Earth To Congress—The Pharmaceutical Patent System Is Broken—Pharma Patents Need Their Own Set Of Rules, Amber N. Sanges
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Congress enacted the Hatch-Waxman Act to address rising healthcare costs, while further encouraging pharmaceutical innovation. The Act allows generic drug manufacturers to bypass the lengthy and costly FDA approval process by relying on FDA approved brand name pharmaceuticals. As a result, brand name pharmaceutical manufacturers have engaged in certain acts, such as reverse payment settlements, to maintain market control pursuant to their exclusive patent rights. Therefore, this Act has resulted in a clash between brand name and generic pharmaceutical companies, which is harming consumers and implicating anti-trust concerns. Accordingly, this Comment proposes that Congress enact legislation, so that pharmaceutical patents—as …

Looking For Peace In The National Curricula Of The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Katerina Standish, Rula Talahma
Peace and Conflict Studies
What values do national curricular statements communicate related to peace, conflict, violence and nonviolence? Schools are places that teach morals and mind-sets—transmission belts—cultural establishments that can contribute to how a student learns (pedagogy) and what a student learns (curriculum). Informed by Curriculum Theory and Peace Education Theory this mixed-method study utilizes directive and summative content analysis to inspect the General Statement, Teachers Guide and Shari’a national curricular statements at the elementary and preparatory level (mandatory education) for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). It examines each document for three elements found routinely in peace education (PE): recognition of violence; addressing …

Renewable Chemicals And Bioproducts: A Potential For Agricultural Diversification And Economic Development, Henry Brockman
Bulletins 4000 -
Renewable chemicals are a new category of novel products: building blocks and ingredients for the production of chemicals produced from renewable feedstock and sustainable advanced manufacturing processes, leaving a smaller environmental footprint than traditional petrochemicals. Biologically based products are mainly non-food products derived from biomass.
Renewable chemicals represent a market opportunity predicted to grow from US$2.8 billion in 2011 to US$98.5 billion by 2020, driven by consumers demanding safer and more environmentally friendly products and the creation of a market advantage by using novel products in the manufacturing process. Renewable chemicals are a sustainable diversification option for rangeland irrigation precincts, …

Trail Vision: Utilizing Leopold As Environmental Equipment For Living, Kendall Elizabeth Barrett
Trail Vision: Utilizing Leopold As Environmental Equipment For Living, Kendall Elizabeth Barrett
Master's Theses
Hiking trails are one of the major ways citizens make observations about the natural world. An analysis of trail maintenance texts demonstrates a focus on concealment and camouflage of human construction and upkeep in National Scenic Trails. These practices are detrimental to environmentalism, since the resulting ideology frames nature as overly self-sufficient and not in need of human stewardship. Trail maintenance practices are analyzed in reference to the nature/culture dichotomy. Perceptions of nature’s self-healing ability are analyzed through a comparison of the oil spills in Santa Barbara during 1969 and 2015. An alternative approach is found through Aldo Leopold. Leopold …

Development And Implementation Of High Fidelity Human Models For The Investigation Of Blast And Non-Penetrating Projectile Impact, Candice F. Cooper
Development And Implementation Of High Fidelity Human Models For The Investigation Of Blast And Non-Penetrating Projectile Impact, Candice F. Cooper
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Military operations abroad have highlighted the effects of several types of physical traumas including traumatic brain injury and behind armor blunt trauma. While previous approaches toward understanding and mitigating trauma caused by blast or blunt impact relied upon physical testing of animal subjects, post mortem human subjects, or human tissue surrogates, recent advances in computational capability have spurred a growing area of research in computational investigations into wound injury and its mitigation. The development of high-fidelity human torso and head-neck-torso models are presented here. These models are employed in blast and non-penetrating projectile impact simulations in order to demonstrate the …

Standing Up For Legislators: Reevaluating Legislator Standing In The Wake Of Kerr V. Hickenlooper, William D. Gohl
Northwestern University Law Review
Hornbook constitutional law establishes that Congress and state legislatures are bodies of limited, enumerated powers, and common sense suggests they should get their act together and exercise them more often. But should legislators be permitted to sue in order to exercise their powers when another branch of government infringes on them unconstitutionally, or the body they represent unconstitutionally limits them? This Note argues that, at least in certain circumstances, they should. Following on the heels of the Tenth Circuit’s recent treatment of the issue in its Kerr v. Hickenlooper decisions, this Note proposes a redefinition of the legislator standing doctrine …
