Cell-To-Cell Transmission Of Dipeptide Repeat Proteins Linked To C9orf72-Als/Ftd., Thomas Westergard, Brigid K Jensen, Xinmei Wen, Jingli Cai, Elizabeth Kropf, Lorraine Iacovitti, Piera Pasinelli, Davide Trotti

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Aberrant hexanucleotide repeat expansions in C9orf72 are the most common genetic change underlying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). RNA transcripts containing these expansions undergo repeat-associated non-ATG translation (RAN-T) to form five dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs). DPRs are found as aggregates throughout the CNS of C9orf72-ALS/FTD patients, and some cause degeneration when expressed in vitro in neuronal cultures and in vivo in animal models. The spread of characteristic disease-related proteins drives the progression of pathology in many neurodegenerative diseases. While DPR toxic mechanisms continue to be investigated, the potential for DPRs to spread has yet to be determined. …

Consciousness And The Unity Of Mind, Mark Rowlands Oct 2016

Consciousness And The Unity Of Mind, Mark Rowlands

Animal Sentience

Several types of objection have been raised against the arguments I presented in my target article, “Are animals persons?” Among the objections are the following: (1) the claim that animals are persons is of little significance, (2) my use of the Lockean conception of the person is questionable, (3) whether a creature qualifies as a person is a matter of social construction rather than objective fact, (4) reflective consciousness is more important than I realize, (5) my reliance on implicit self-awareness in the account of personhood is ill-advised, (6) my account entails that too many creatures qualify as persons, and …

Part II also examines the implications for web start-ups seeking to exploit existing, publicly available data if the Northern District eventually holds against 3Taps Inc. at trial or on summary judgment. Finally, Part III proposes a statutory solution that creates a safe harbor within the CFAA for users accessing public computer systems, effectively removing these defendants from the purview of the CFAA. This …

The Case Against Income Tax Exemption For Nonprofits, Michael Fricke

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

In order to discuss the current state of affairs in the nonprofit world, Part I of this Article addresses how nonprofits are treated under the law and the various income tax exemption defenses that have been proffered over the years. Then, Part II investigates the problems raised by organizations that take advantage of their tax exemption, but decline to use their revenue for their exempt purposes. This problem has been addressed infrequently in academic literature, but Part III reviews other proposed reforms that might affect this issue. Part IV lays out the proposed solution, and Part V examines the …

Exploring How Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Online Social Bookmarking To Envision Literacy In The Disciplines, Jamie Colwell, Kristen Gregory

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study considers how pre-service teachers envision disciplinary literacy through an online social bookmarking project. Thirty secondary pre-service teachers participated in the project through an undergraduate literacy course. Online bookmarks and post-project reflections were collected and analyzed using a constant comparative approach to determine emergent themes. Results suggest varying levels of disciplinary knowledge among pre-service teachers, influences of pre-service teachers' envisionments on posted bookmarks, and considerations about standardized testing in disciplinary literacy instruction. Implications for teacher education are discussed in light of these results.

Women's Role In Enhancing Innovation In Livestock Farming: A Gender Perspective, Amailuk Joseph R., Nasubo Fred E., Njeri Njoroge E. Oct 2016

Women's Role In Enhancing Innovation In Livestock Farming: A Gender Perspective, Amailuk Joseph R., Nasubo Fred E., Njeri Njoroge E.

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Livestock accrues benefits to women that include food, income and insurance against crop failure. This gives rise to the need for gender-friendly policies that promote and encourage women to own livestock. Women remain in the ranks of poor livestock keepers, although they make up two-thirds of the population of livestock keepers. Factors that influence livestock productivity among women range from rights to land, access to high yield breeds, application of new technologies and practices, access to education and extension services, and rigid cultural systems among others. These factors handled in a gender sensitive manner would go a long way to …

Effects Of Parasitism And Mite Control Methods On European Starling Development, Aderinsola Oluwasikemi Odetunde Oct 2016

Effects Of Parasitism And Mite Control Methods On European Starling Development, Aderinsola Oluwasikemi Odetunde

Theses and Dissertations

Certain developmental stressors can lead to developmental trade-offs in young organisms. Hematophagous ectoparasites are a common stressor experienced by European starlings, and we wished to explore what aspects of an ectoparasite infestation drove trade-offs. The first part of this study was to test the hypothesis that blood loss was the sole mediator of trade-offs due to hematophagous ectoparasite infestation. We used nestlings that were exposed to mites in the nests, nestlings in mite-reduced nests experiencing supplementary blood loss, and nestlings in mite reduced nests with no supplementary blood loss. We also used a new heat treatment to reduce mites in …

Benefits And Limitations Of Evidence-Based Dentistry In The Indian Context, Varun Suri, Vanita Suri Oct 2016

Benefits And Limitations Of Evidence-Based Dentistry In The Indian Context, Varun Suri, Vanita Suri

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The American Dental Association defines the evidence-based dentistry (EBD) as “an approach to oral health care that requires the integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient’s oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist’s clinical expertise and the patient’s treatment needs and preferences” [1]. Nowadays, evidence-based care is regarded as the gold stan- dard in health care delivery. Published reports of research pro- jects constitute the basis of EBD. They are analyzed systemati- cally in meta-analysis.

Softening The Blow Of Social Exclusion: The Responsive Theory Of Social Exclusion, Gili Freedman, Kipling D. Williams, Jennifer S. Beer Oct 2016

Softening The Blow Of Social Exclusion: The Responsive Theory Of Social Exclusion, Gili Freedman, Kipling D. Williams, Jennifer S. Beer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Social exclusion is an interactive process between multiple people, yet previous research has focused almost solely on the negative impacts on targets. What advice is there for people on the other side (i.e., sources) who want to minimize its negative impact and preserve their own reputation? To provide an impetus for research on the interactive nature of exclusion, we propose the Responsive Theory of Social Exclusion. Our theory postulates that targets and sources’ needs are better maintained if sources use clear, explicit verbal communication. We propose that sources have three options: explicit rejection (clearly stating no), ostracism (ignoring), and ambiguous …

System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenberg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen Oct 2016

System Branding In Three Public Libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Charlotte Mecklenberg Library, And Richland Library, Patrick Roughen

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This research examines the development of the system brands of three public libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Richland Library, and Charlotte Mecklenberg Library. A system brand may be defined as the overall brand of a library system, as opposed to any of its sub-brands, such as those associated with individual library services, branches, departments, and events. Using a descriptive, case study approach, this research characterizes the efforts behind branding in these library systems.

The North American Sea Ducks: Their Biology And Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 2016

The North American Sea Ducks: Their Biology And Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard

Zea E-Books Collection

The 21 species of sea ducks are one of the larger subgroups (Tribe Mergini) of the waterfowl family Anatidae, and the 16 species (one historically extinct) that are native to North America represent the largest number to be found on any continent, and also the largest number of endemic sea duck species native to any continent.

Although generally not important as game birds, the sea ducks include some economically important birds such as the eiders, the basis for the Arctic eiderdown industry and a historically important food source for some Native American cultures. They also include what is probably the …

Differences In Memory Functioning Between Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And/Or Focal Epilepsy., Sylvia E Lee, Michelle Y Kibby, Morris J Cohen, Lisa Stanford, Yong Park, Suzanne Strickland

Publications

Prior research has shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy are frequently comorbid and that both disorders are associated with various attention and memory problems. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted comparing the two disorders in one sample to determine unique versus shared deficits. Hence, we investigated differences in working memory (WM) and short-term and delayed recall between children with ADHD, focal epilepsy of mixed foci, comorbid ADHD/epilepsy and controls. Participants were compared on the Core subtests and the Picture Locations subtest of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS). Results indicated that children with ADHD displayed intact verbal WM and long-term …
