Comments On The Eu-Canada Joint Interpretive Declaration On The Ceta, Gus Van Harten
Comments On The Eu-Canada Joint Interpretive Declaration On The Ceta, Gus Van Harten
Editorials and Commentaries
Comments are offered on the EU-Canada Joint Interpretive Declaration on the CETA (updated to account for versions of 5 October, 11 October, 13 October, and 22 October 2016). For eight reasons, I argue that the Declaration does very little to alleviate key concerns arising from the CETA's proposed special rights and privileges for foreign investors.

Cognitive Functioning Of Akwesasne Mohawk Adolescents Exposed To Pcbs, Joan Newman 4425055, Mia Gallo, Akwesasne Task Force On The Environment, Lawrence M. Schell
Journal of Indigenous Research
This study was carried out in partnership with Akwesasne Mohawks whose environment has been polluted with PCBs from industrial effluent. Using three cognitive tests (Woodcock Johnson Revised, Test of Memory and Learning, and Ravens Progressive Matrices), we investigated the cognitive functioning of 269 adolescents and related their scores to PCBs in their blood. Although the group of adolescents performed as the standardization sample of other adolescents of the same age in North America, we found that scores on three of their subtests (all involving memory) were negatively related to PCB body burden. There was an especially robust association of PCBs …

Investigating Elementary School Teachers’ Interactions Relating To Newcomer Emergent Bilingual Students, Amy Cain
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
Five of the top 16 counties in the United States with the fastest-growing Latino populations from 2000 to 2007 are in Georgia (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). The Georgia metropolitan area where the study occurred has more Latinos than Austin, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or Tucson (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). Particularly following the New Latino Diaspora (Hamann, Wortham, & Murillo, 2002; Murillo, 2002; and Villenas, 2002) schools in the Southeastern United States have more and more Spanish-speaking students (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). However, most classroom teachers have not received specialized training or professional development relating to these students (Ballantyne, …

RATIONALE: Nebivolol is known to have beta-1 blocker activity, but it was also suggested that it elicits relaxation of the peripheral arteries in part via release of nitric oxide (NO). However, the effect of nebivolol on the vasomotor tone of cerebral arteries is still unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of nebivolol on the diameter of isolated rat basilar arteries (BA) in control, in the presence of inhibitors of vasomotor signaling pathways of know action and hemolysed blood.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Vasomotor responses were measured by videomicroscopy and the intracellular Ca2+ by the Fura-2 AM ratiometric method. Under control conditions, …

Revised Scec Final Report On The New East Shoreline Strand Of The San Andreas Fault, Susanne U. Jänecke, Daniel K. Markowski
Geosciences Faculty Publications
This report consists of three parts: Original proposal (2011), provisional report (Janecke, 2013), and a final summary in the form of the MS thesis of Daniel Markowski (2016). The abstract herein is the abstract of Janecke's provisional report except that I updated the name of the fault to East Shoreline strand of the SAF. A different "Shoreline fault" is already in the Quaternary fault and fold database. See Markowski (2016) and Janecke et al. 2016 for additional updates.
Summary:
In 2013 Janecke submitted a provisional report to SCEC about our research along the newly identified East Shoreline strand of …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
The range of a species is determined by the balance of its demographic rates across space. Population growth rates are widely hypothesized to be greatest at the geographic center of the species range, but indirect empirical support for this pattern using abundance as a proxy has been mixed, and demographic rates are rarely quantified on a large spatial scale. Therefore, the texture of how demographic rates of a species vary over its range remains an open question. We quantified seasonal fecundity of populations spanning the majority of the global range of a single species, the saltmarsh sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus …

Siper, Vance Zemon, James Gordon, Julia George-Jones, Stacey Lurie, Jessica Zweifach, Teresa Tavassoli, A. Ting Wang, Jesslyn Jamison, Joseph D. Buxbaum, Alexander Kolevzon
Publications and Research
Objective There is a critical need to identify biomarkers and objective outcome measures that can be used to understand underlying neural mechanisms in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) offer a noninvasive technique to evaluate the functional integrity of neural mechanisms, specifically visual pathways, while probing for disease pathophysiology.
Methods Transient VEPs (tVEPs) were obtained from 96 unmedicated children, including 37 children with ASD, 36 typically developing (TD) children, and 23 unaffected siblings (SIBS). A conventional contrast-reversing checkerboard condition was compared to a novel short-duration condition, which was developed to enable objective data collection from severely affected populations …
Effect Of Cover Crops And Nitrogen Application Timing On Nutrient Loading And Concentration Through Subsurface Tile Drainage, Michael Douglas Ruffatti
Effect Of Cover Crops And Nitrogen Application Timing On Nutrient Loading And Concentration Through Subsurface Tile Drainage, Michael Douglas Ruffatti
Theses and Dissertations
It has been estimated that nitrate (NO3-N) leaching from artificially drained agricultural fields in the Upper Mississippi River Basin accounts for approximately 65% of nitrogen (N) delivered annually to the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the impact fertilizer application timing and cover crops (CC) adoption on the load and concentration of nutrients in subsurface drainage leachate. This experiment was conducted at the Illinois State University Nitrogen Management Field Station, in Lexington, IL. Treatments include a zero control (no N fertilizer and no cover crop), fall dominated N application (70% fall, 30% spring) with …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a new type of regulatory noncoding RNA that only recently has been identified and cataloged. Emerging evidence indicates that circRNAs exert a new layer of post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. In this study, we utilized transcriptome sequencing datasets to systematically identify the expression of circRNAs (including known and newly identified ones by our pipeline) in 464 RNA-seq samples, and then constructed the CircNet database (http://circnet.mbc.nctu.edu.tw/) that provides the following resources: (i) novel circRNAs, (ii) integrated miRNA-target networks, (iii) expression profiles of circRNA isoforms, (iv) genomic annotations of circRNA isoforms (e.g. 282 948 exon positions), …

The Tree House That Jack Built, Aylea Stephens
The Tree House That Jack Built, Aylea Stephens
Children's Book and Media Review
Jack built a tree house by the sea, but then many animals come to the tree house with jack. First it’s a fly, then a lizard, then a parrot, a cat, and so on. They have all come to hear Jack read a book. This particular book is about a boy who lives in a tree house by the sea and all of the animals are his friends. Starting with a twist on the familiar story of “the house that Jack built,” the story takes on its own identity in Jack’s tree house.
Thanksgiving Day Thanks, Aylea Stephens
Thanksgiving Day Thanks, Aylea Stephens
Children's Book and Media Review
Thanksgiving is coming, and Sam’s class couldn’t be more excited. Everyone knows of one special thing that they are grateful for, but Sam isn’t sure what his special thing is. Sam’s teacher, Mrs. Wright, wants everyone to write down something they are really grateful for while the class works on Thanksgiving projects like a pumpkin pie making contest, making place mats, and helping with a food drive. Sam is able to think of a great project: balloons just like the Thanksgiving parade on TV! Lots of wind might ruin Sam’s special project, but he is finally able to come up …

Slug Needs A Hug!, Liz Kazandzhy
Children's Book and Media Review
All Slug wants is a hug from his mom. When he doesn’t get it, he starts questioning why, and he goes to his other animal friends for advice. One by one, these creatures try to help make him more huggable—Kitten suggests becoming furrier, Bird offers some feathers and a beak, Pig says he needs a tail, and so on. After this intense makeover, and wearing this conglomerated costume, Slug returned home to show his mom his new look. Once she finally recognizes him, she insists that there’s no need to change who he is and that she loves him as …
Melissa's Octopus And Other Unsuitable Pets, Aylea Stephens
Melissa's Octopus And Other Unsuitable Pets, Aylea Stephens
Children's Book and Media Review
People can have all kinds of different pets. Melissa has an octopus, but it’s not very suitable because he makes such a mess in the bathroom. Thomas has a mole, but the mole is always making tunnels and so is difficult to find. Betty can’t ever find her chameleon. Arthur’s warthog does exactly what it wants. Caroline has to use a ladder to hug her pet giraffe, and Simon’s doesn’t know which end of his worm he is supposed to talk to. Peter’s elephant is sometimes way too heavy. With all of these unsuitable pets, though, a crocodile that could …
