Alternative Governance Structures In Megacities: Threats Or Opportunities?, Diane E. Chido Ms. Nov 2016

Alternative Governance Structures In Megacities: Threats Or Opportunities?, Diane E. Chido Ms.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S. military recognizes that it will be required to engage in dense urban areas in the near future, whether under combat, stabilization, or disaster response conditions. The military also recognizes that it is not prepared to effectively operate within such complex terrain and populations. Alternative governance structures, which can be ethnic- or religious-based civil society groups or even organized criminal networks, emerge to provide basic services when the state fails to govern effectively. Leaders of these groups maintain control through various means including violence, coercion, and service provision or through tribal, religious, or other cultural ties and structures.

Armintxe Basque Cave Artwork: The Latest Find Oct 2016

Armintxe Basque Cave Artwork: The Latest Find

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Ancient cave paintings reaching back more than 14,000 years were recently found below the Basque town of Lekeitio (Bizkaia). The fifty images were found etched into stone at the Armintxe cave, depicting animals rarely seen in Paleolithic art, such as lions. Experts from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia made the discovery, and believe that they share many of the same characteristics as previous cave artwork in the Basque Country, suggesting close contact among these people who shared in the creation of these cave etchings.

Calculating Ethnicity Through The U.S. Census: The Basque Case, William A. Douglass

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

In preparation for the 1980 U. S. Census, the U.S. Census Bureau revamped considerably the way it defined, collected, and reported the ancestry of the American population. A long form of the census schedule was developed for application to one in six households. Prior to 1980, Basques were masked under Spanish nationals and French nationals in the final census reports and Basque-Americans were not distinguished at all. This article considers how Basque ethnicity came to be parsed and reported in three fashions—“Basque, Spanish,” “Basque, French,” and “Basque, n.e.c.” (e.g. “not elsewhere classified”). So it was now possible for Americans to …

Expression, Purification, And Crystallization Of An Endoxylanase From Bacteroides Vulgatus, Jesslyn Park, Jason Hurlbert

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

Sustainable sources of energy are growing in demand as fossil fuels are rapidly expended. One such energy source is fuel ethanol generated from the fermentation of plant biomass by engineered bacterial biocatalysts. The creation of a biocatalyst capable of converting nearly any plant matter to fuel ethanol requires the identification of novel enzymes capable of degrading specific carbohydrate polymers and cloning these enzymes into a bacterial host. This study seeks to structurally characterize a novel xylanase of glycosyl hydrolase family 30 (GH30) from Bacteroides vulgatus, a bacterium found in the human gut microbiome, via x-ray crystallography. The gene for …

Determination Of Phylo-Group Diversity Of Escherichia Coli In Environmental Sand Samples Collected From A South Carolina Beach, Savannah A. Moritzky, Victoria Frost, Matthew Heard

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a common bacterial species that can persist in many environments found around the world. One environment where it can be found that is of particular concern is an oceanic beach, where it can serve as an indicator of both fecal and microbial pollution. While the majority of strains of E. coli are non-pathogenic to humans, some phylo-groups are associated with virulent strains and could cause disease. Therefore, it is of critical concern that we determine where this E. coli is coming from and whether it is potentially harmful to human health and well-being. In this …

Exploring The Community Impact Of Service-Learning Project Teams, Brent J. Goertzen Ph.D., Justin Greenleaf Ph.D., Danielle Dougherty

Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this project was to study community partners' perceptions of the impact of service-learning projects, by studying the ways in which “service-learning project teams” (SLPT) impacted the communities and organizations where they worked. Researchers purposefully selected 16 community partners (CP) who had direct experience working with and supervising service-learning project teams to take part in semi-structured interviews regarding their experiences. Analysis of the transcribed interviews resulted in 15 themes that were divided into two categories. These findings are intended to be a starting point for further research regarding the community impact of service-learning.

Evaluation Champions: What They Need And Where They Fit In Organizational Learning, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Evaluation champions in four state Extension systems described needs for training and support and perspectives on building evaluation capacity in their organization as part of a larger interview study exploring their roles, growth, and motivations. These 40 evaluation leaders identified needs for basic and advanced evaluation skills training, technical assistance, and practical learning via mentoring and project teams. Recommendations for organizational change in evaluation capacity included “top-down” investments in communication, training, and practical support, as well as increased “bottom-up” efforts by champions like themselves to advocate, model best practice, and contribute to training and mentoring peers. Implications for professional development …

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish Oct 2016

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish

Anthropology ETDs

Sleep problems afflict millions world-over. Treating this has been difficult because there is no consensus definition for “normal” sleep. People can vary in their personal sleep need, but the determinants of variation in sleep duration are largely unknown, as is the criteria to determine how much variation is normal. Given that most diurnal mammals (including primates) appear to sleep from sunset to sunrise, the leading explanation for sleep pathology in the post-industrial world has been that electronics, especially light illuminating devices, substantially reduce sleep duration. This assertion has heretofore only been tested experimentally. This research aims to resolve this issue …

Abstract

In recent years, consumer interest in locally or regionally produced foods has been growing. This study analyzed consumer attitudes and beliefs on local or regional livestock products in Florida. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 404 participants from counties in Florida. They were assessed by descriptive statistics, including chi-square tests. Most participants believed using chemicals in locally or regionally produced beef or goat meat was at minimum a somewhat serious hazard. Thus, many were willing to pay more for meat certified as locally or regionally produced. Moreover, most agreed or strongly agreed with statements on meat attributes. …

This study sought to investigate the effects of mechanical unloading on myocardial energetics and the metabolic perturbation of heart failure (HF) in an effort to identify potential new therapeutic targets that could enhance the unloading-induced cardiac recovery. The authors prospectively examined paired human myocardial tissue procured from 31 advanced HF patients at left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implant and at heart transplant plus tissue from 11 normal donors. They identified increased post-LVAD glycolytic metabolites without a coordinate increase in early, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates. The increased pyruvate was not directed toward the mitochondria and the TCA cycle for complete …
