Linear, Narrative-Plot Development In The Song Of Songs—Part Two, Richard M. Davidson Jan 2016

Linear, Narrative-Plot Development In The Song Of Songs—Part Two, Richard M. Davidson

Faculty Publications

This article examines the linear, narrative-plot development in the Song of Songs. Evidence is first given supporting several hermeneutical presuppositions which underpin this study: (1) the unity of the Song, revealed especially in its exquisitely designed symmetrical literary macrostructure; (2) Solomonic authorship of the Song, written early in his reign while he was still monogamous; (3) King Solomon and Pharaoh’s daughter (Shulamit) as the couple in the Song; and (4) a literal (not allegorical) interpretation of the Song as human love poetry. Building upon these presuppositions, this article explores text-indicators for the historical narrative-plot progression of the Song, building largely …

Time To Move The Goalposts? Do We Need New Targets For Developing I.V. Anaesthetics?, J. R. Sneyd

More Faculty of Health Research

Time to move the goalposts? Do we need new targets for developing intravenous anaesthetics? Widespread use of intravenous hypnotics for induction of anaesthesia dates from 1934 when thiopentone was introduced. Since then a handful of agents have come and gone with only propofol and ketamine enjoying common use in addition to some residual administrations of thiopentone and etomidate, During the 30 years since propofol was introduced in 1986, number of candidate hypnotics and propofol reformulations have been evaluated but none have yet achieved commercial success or significant clinical impact. During this period developmental objectives built on the shortfalls of thiopentone …

Palmitate-Induced Changes In Energy Demand Cause Reallocation Of Atp Supply In Rat And Human Skeletal Muscle Cells., Raid B. Nisr, Charles Affourtit Jan 2016

Palmitate-Induced Changes In Energy Demand Cause Reallocation Of Atp Supply In Rat And Human Skeletal Muscle Cells., Raid B. Nisr, Charles Affourtit

School of Biomedical Sciences

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been associated with obesity-related muscle insulin resistance, but the causality of this association is controversial. The notion that mitochondrial oxidative capacity may be insufficient to deal appropriately with excessive nutrient loads is for example disputed. Effective mitochondrial capacity is indirectly, but largely determined by ATP-consuming processes because skeletal muscle energy metabolism is mostly controlled by ATP demand. Probing the bioenergetics of rat and human myoblasts in real time we show here that the saturated fatty acid palmitate lowers the rate and coupling efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation under conditions it causes insulin resistance. Stearate affects the bioenergetic parameters …

This paper presents the results from two ring-tests addressing the feasibility, robustness and reproducibility of a reproduction toxicity test with the freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis (RENILYS strain). Sixteen laboratories (from inexperienced to expert laboratories in mollusc testing) from nine countries participated in these ring-tests. Survival and reproduction were evaluated in L. stagnalis exposed to cadmium, tributyltin, prochloraz and trenbolone according to an OECD draft OECD Test Guideline. In total, 49 datasets were analysed to assess the practicability of the proposed experimental protocol, and to estimate the between-laboratory reproducibility of toxicity endpoint values. The statistical analysis of count data (number of …

Differences In The Timing Of Cardio-Respiratory Development Determine Whether Marine Gastropod Embryos Survive Or Die In Hypoxia., Tabitha S. Rudin-Bitterli, John I. Spicer, Simon D. Rundle Jan 2016

Differences In The Timing Of Cardio-Respiratory Development Determine Whether Marine Gastropod Embryos Survive Or Die In Hypoxia., Tabitha S. Rudin-Bitterli, John I. Spicer, Simon D. Rundle

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Physiological plasticity of early developmental stages is a key way by which organisms can survive and adapt to environmental change. We investigated developmental plasticity of aspects of the cardio-respiratory physiology of encapsulated embryos of a marine gastropod,Littorina obtusata, surviving exposure to moderate hypoxia (PO2 =8 kPa) and compared the development of these survivors with that of individuals that died before hatching. Individuals surviving hypoxia exhibited a slower rate of development and altered ontogeny of cardio-respiratory structure and function compared with normoxic controls (PO2 >20 kPa). The onset and development of the larval and adult hearts were delayed in chronological time …

Effect Of Phenylephrine On The Accommodative System, Jj Esteve-Taboada, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, P Bernal-Molina, Et Al Jan 2016

Effect Of Phenylephrine On The Accommodative System, Jj Esteve-Taboada, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, P Bernal-Molina, Et Al

School of Health Professions

Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. During accommodation the pupil constricts to increase the depth of focus of the eye and improve retinal image quality. Researchers have traditionally faced the challenge of measuring the accommodative properties of the eye through a small pupil and thus have relied on pharmacological agents to dilate the pupil. Achieving pupil dilation (mydriasis) without affecting the accommodative ability of the eye (cycloplegia) could be useful in many clinical and research contexts. Phenylephrine …

The Lego System Makes Co-Creation Painless For The Lego Group, Seth A. Peacock Jan 2016

The Lego System Makes Co-Creation Painless For The Lego Group, Seth A. Peacock

UROP Posters

Co-creation is using consumers to help innovate with a product. While the methodology of co-creation has been extensively researched, different products’ relative suitability to co-creation is rarely examined. This research examines the LEGO Group’s co-creation efforts including LEGO Ideas, LEGO Factory, LEGO Mindstorms NXT, and LEGO Architecture. These programs’ reliance on LEGO’s versatility, modularity, adult fan community, and fan LEGO building expertise are evaluated and compared to other firm’s co-creation efforts. The adult LEGO community’s custom LEGO creations, including fan-designed and fan-sold sets, commissioned sculptures, and LEGO robotics development all constitute consumer innovation independent of the firm; the LEGO Group …

The Impact Of Urbanization On Mosquito-Borne Viruses, Nikhita Puthuveetil Jan 2016

The Impact Of Urbanization On Mosquito-Borne Viruses, Nikhita Puthuveetil

UROP Posters

Mosquito-borne diseases such as yellow fever, dengue, and West Nile are rapidly emerging across the globe. Their emergence is often aided by the growth of their vector population, or the organisms that transmit the virus to the host. Urbanization and land use often destroys the habitat of the virus and its vector. However, the virus and its vector often survive despite the changes to its environment. The goal of this paper is to find out exactly how urbanization and changes in land use affect mosquito-borne viruses and how these viruses survive despite the destruction of their habitats. To understand how …

Chemical signatures that can indicate growth medium recipes or other key aspects of the production conditions are an important goal for forensic and biodefense agencies. In this study, Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) profiles were analyzed from Bacillus thuringiensis spores grown five different published medium recipes. B. thuringiensis was chosen due to its biochemical, structural, and genetic similarity to B. anthracis, a Biosafety Level III select agent and the organisms used in the Amerithrax attacks in 2001. The relative abundance of 13 different fatty acid biomarkers, spanning four structure classes, was compared across all spore samples. Differences in the …

Mohr, G. Ermidis, R. Julian, F. Yousefian, E. W. Helge, N. R. Jørgensen, J. Fulford, K. M. Knapp, P. Krustrup

School of Health Professions

We aimed to study whether short-duration vibration exercise or football sessions of two different durations acutely changed plasma markers of bone turnover and muscle strain. Inactive premenopausal women (n=56) were randomized to complete a single bout of short (FG15) or long duration (FG60) small sided football or low magnitude whole body vibration training (VIB). Procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (P1NP) was increased during exercise for FG15 (51.6±23.0 to 56.5±22.5 μg·L−1, mean ± SD, P<0.05) and FG60 (42.6±11.8 to 50.2±12.8 μg·L−1, P<0.05) but not for VIB (38.8±15.1 to 36.6±14.7 μg·L−1, P>0.05). An increase in osteocalcin was observed 48 h after exercise (P<0.05), which did not differ between exercise groups. C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen was not affected by exercise. Blood lactate concentration increased during exercise for FG15 (0.6±0.2 to 3.4±1.2 mM) and FG60 (0.6±0.2 to 3.3±2.0 mM), but not for VIB (0.6±0.2 to 0.8±0.4 mM) (P<0.05). Plasma creatine kinase increased by 55±63% and 137±119% 48 h after FG15 and FG60 (P<0.05), but not after VIB (26±54%, NS). In contrast to the minor elevation in osteocalcin in response to a single session of vibration exercise, both short and longer durations of small sided football acutely increased plasma P1NP, osteocalcin, and creatine kinase. This may contribute to favorable effects of chronic training on musculoskeletal health.

Farmers’ Perception On The Health And Environmental Benefits Of Organic Rice Production In The Philippines: Implications For Further Policy Research, Guinevere T. Madlangbayan, Agnes C. Rola

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

Conventional rice production with the use of chemicals was found to have negative externalities both to the farmers’ health and the farming environment. Organic agriculture technologies were developed to minimize such impacts. This paper explores the empirical support of the health and environmental benefits of organic agriculture by generating data from a survey of rice farmers and focus group discussions in rice farming communities. The respondents came from rice farming areas in the country where early adoptors of the organic rice farming system were located. The results of the analysis suggest that farmers fail to recognize the relationship between the …

An Exploration Of The Use Of Photovoice-Inspired Techniques To Facilitate Narrative Leadership In A Small Group Of Middle-Aged Women, Michelle M. Zive

Dissertations

Leadership often is defined as a persuasive relationship. Over the last two decades, narrative leadership has been viewed in the Leadership Studies literature as a source of persuasion. Narrative leaders use stories to impact others in both large-scale political and social movements, as well as in large-scale organizations. Even as this has been happening, the field also has begun to re-conceptualize leadership as a group rather than an individual process, a view of leadership sometimes characterized as shared leadership. There is limited understanding of whether narrative leadership operates in shared leadership situations and a dearth of literature about specific techniques …
