Potential Biomarkers To Predict Fertility In Dairy Cattle, Melissa Jill Wise Jan 2016

Potential Biomarkers To Predict Fertility In Dairy Cattle, Melissa Jill Wise

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The aim of this study was to use leukocyte counts and haptoglobin concentrations in blood, milk, and uterine luminal secretion as biomarkers of health status and to associate those biomarkers and milk yield with reproductive success in dairy cattle. The study used a commercial dairy milking three times daily. One hundred and twenty six (25 primiparous and 101 multiparous) Holstein dairy cows were used. Reproductive success was evaluated with variables measured at three time points: [20-26 (prebreeding), 54-60 (breeding), and 90-96 (pregnancy diagnosis) days in milk (DIM)]. Variables included concentrations of leukocytes from blood, milk [measured by QScout Farm Lab …

Assessment Of Clarias Gariepinus As A Biological Control Agent Against Mosquito Larvae, Buze Chala, Berhanu Erko, Abebe Animut, Abraham Degarege, Beyene Petros

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of insecticide resistant mosquitoes renewed interest in investigating the use of larvivorous fish as a biological control agent. The potential of Clarias gariepinus fish in controlling Anopheles arabiensis and culicine larvae was assessed under laboratory and semi-field conditions.

RESULTS: Small size (15-20 cm) C. gariepinus fish consumed greater number of mosquito larvae than the large size fish (25-40 cm) in the multivariate regression model (β = 13.36, 95 % CI = 4.57, 22.15). The Anopheles larvae consumed was greater in number than the culicines larvae consumed by the fish (β = 12.10, 95 % CI …

The Difference That Art Makes, Mariana Ortega Jan 2016

The Difference That Art Makes, Mariana Ortega

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In the following essay I discuss Monique Roelofs’s The Cultural Promise of the Aesthetic. I show that Roelofs’s rich and complex notion of the aesthetic, informed by promises, modes of address, and aesthetic relationality, offers an important and novel way of understanding the aesthetic within a context attuned to questions of difference. I point out that Roelofs’s analysis may be enhanced by notions theorized by Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldúa, and María Lugones. Moreover, I raise a question regarding the intricate link between Roelofs’s notion of the aesthetic and morality

The Multiple Meanings Of San Diego's Little Italy: A Study Of The Impact Of Real And Symbolic Space And Boundaries On The Ethnic Identities Of Eight Italian Americans, Thomas Joseph Cesarini Jan 2016

The Multiple Meanings Of San Diego's Little Italy: A Study Of The Impact Of Real And Symbolic Space And Boundaries On The Ethnic Identities Of Eight Italian Americans, Thomas Joseph Cesarini

Dissertations

The literature suggests that identifying with a particular place can promote a sense of ethnic identity. This study focused on eight Italian American community members’ perceptions of San Diego’s Little Italy as both a container and creator of ethnic identity. The study addressed a) how the participants define and convey their Italian American ethnic identity and b) how the participants perceive the role of San Diego’s Little Italy pre-redevelopment and post-redevelopment in creating and shaping their sense of being Italian American.

The study employed a case-study design. Ethnohistoric accounts of life experiences were gathered from participants selected through convenience and …

Exploring The Lived Experience Of Male-To-Female Transgender Youth Accessing Trans-Related Healthcare In Los Angeles, Marcel Fomotar Jan 2016

Exploring The Lived Experience Of Male-To-Female Transgender Youth Accessing Trans-Related Healthcare In Los Angeles, Marcel Fomotar

Dissertations

Background: According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (2015), LGBTI individuals delay healthcare treatment because they fear stigmatization or because they believe many healthcare professionals lack knowledge and experience working with LGBTI individuals. The phenomenon of living as a transgender person and accessing trans-related healthcare is understudied.

Aim: To explore the perceived meaning of accessing transgender-related healthcare among transgender youth.

Method: A phenomenological qualitative design grounded on Husserl’s descriptive phenomenology was used to explore the ascribed meaning associated to accessing trans-related healthcare services among transyouth as they experienced and perceived it. A purposive and thematic sample of Male-to-Female transyouth …

Quieting The Sharholders' Voice: Empirical Evidence Of Pervasive Bundling In Proxy Solicitations, James D. Cox, Fabrizio Ferri, Colleen Honigsberg, Randall S. Thomas Jan 2016

Quieting The Sharholders' Voice: Empirical Evidence Of Pervasive Bundling In Proxy Solicitations, James D. Cox, Fabrizio Ferri, Colleen Honigsberg, Randall S. Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

The integrity of shareholder voting is critical to the legitimacy of corporate law. One threat to this process is proxy “bundling,” or the joinder of more than one separate item into a single proxy proposal. Bundling deprives shareholders of the right to convey their views on each separate matter being put to a vote and forces them to either reject the entire proposal or approve items they might not otherwise want implemented.

In this Paper, we provide the first comprehensive evaluation of the anti-bundling rules adopted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) in 1992. While we find that the …

The Dod Law Of War Manual And Its Critics: Some Observations, Charles J. Dunlap Jr. Jan 2016

The Dod Law Of War Manual And Its Critics: Some Observations, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

The U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) new Law of War Manual has generated serious debate about its treatment of a variety of issues including human shields, the status of journalists, cyber operations, the precautions to be taken prior to attacks and even the role of honor in war. Although this article does not purport to be a comprehensive response to every critique of the Manual and, indeed, cites opportunities for its improvement, it nevertheless concludes that on balance the Manual provides an excellent, comprehensive and much-needed statement of DoD’s view of the lex lata of the law of war.

Lethality, Public Carry, And Adequate Alternatives, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller Jan 2016

Lethality, Public Carry, And Adequate Alternatives, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the relationship between lethality and the right to bear arms, and considers how that relationship might be shaped by the availability of non-lethal alternative weapons. Prior scholarship has asked whether the Second Amendment includes a right to carry non-lethal “Arms.” An important set of related questions remains: does the Second Amendment necessarily include a right to arm oneself publicly with lethal force, if non-lethal alternatives are available? And how should one evaluate the adequacy of those alternatives?

The Supreme Court As A Filter Between International Law And American Constitutionalism, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2016

The Supreme Court As A Filter Between International Law And American Constitutionalism, Curtis A. Bradley

Faculty Scholarship

As part of a symposium on Justice Stephen Breyer’s book, “The Court and the World,” this essay describes and defends the Supreme Court’s role as a filter between international law and the American constitutional system. In this role, the Court ensures that when international law passes into the U.S. legal system, it does so in a manner consistent with domestic constitutional values. This filtering role is appropriate, the Essay explains, in light of the different processes used to generate international law and domestic law and the different functions served by these bodies of law. The Essay provides examples of this …

Pricing Contract Terms In A Crisis: Venezuelan Bonds In 2016, Elena Carletti, Paolo Colla, Mitu Gulati, Steven Ongena

Faculty Scholarship

As of this writing in June 2016, the markets are predicting Venezuela to be on the brink of default. On June 1, 2016, the 6 month CDS contract traded at about 7000bps which translates into a likelihood of default of over 90%. Our interest in the Venezuelan crisis is that its outstanding sovereign bonds have a unique set of contractual features that, in combination with its near-default status, have created a natural experiment. This experiment has the potential to shed light on one of the long standing questions that sits at the intersection of the fields of law and finance, …

Does Brexit Spell The Death Of Transnational Law?, Ralf Michaels Jan 2016

Does Brexit Spell The Death Of Transnational Law?, Ralf Michaels

Faculty Scholarship

The British leave vote in the referendum on EU membership has important implications for how we think about law . The vote must be viewed as a manifestation of a globalized nationalism that we find in many EU member states and many other countries. As such, it is also a challenge of the idea of transnational law, forcefully introduced in Jessup’s book on Transnational law 60 years ago. In this paper, I suggest that the hope to return from transnational law to the nation state of the 19th century is nostalgic and futile. However, I argue that transnational law has …

The Moral Psychology Of Copyright Infringement, Christopher Buccafusco, David Fagundes Jan 2016

The Moral Psychology Of Copyright Infringement, Christopher Buccafusco, David Fagundes

Faculty Scholarship

Numerous recent cases illustrate that copyright owners sue for infringement even when an unauthorized use of their work causes them no economic harm. This presents a puzzle from the perspective of copyright theory as well as a serious social problem, since infringement suits designed to remedy non-economic harms tend to stifle rather than encourage creative production. While much scholarship has critiqued copyright’s economic theory from the perspective of authors’ incentives to create, ours is the first to explore this issue from the perspective of owners’ motivations to sue for infringement. We turn to moral psychology, and in particular to moral …

Errant Romanticism: Queering Gender And Sexuality In British Literature, 1790-1840, Teresa M. Pershing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Error is both a purposeless wandering and a purposeful identification of a mistake. Each chapter analyzes texts from the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries which feature female characters and the epilogue turns to the autobiographical writing of a man in the 21st-century. Chapters on William Godwin's memoirs of Mary Wollstonecraft, Amelia Alderson Opie's Dangers of Coquetry , Anne Plumptre's Something New, Harriet Martineau's Illustrations of Political Economy, and Thomas Beatie's autography Labor of Love feature characters---both real and fictional--- who destabilize what Bourdieu calls "collective[ly] misrecogn[ized]" understandings of identity as truth/error and "either/or." Utilizing notions of error developed by Zachary Sng …

Evaluating The Effect Of Feed Mixing And Sampling Methodologies On Nutrient Analysis And The Inclusion Of A Novel Protease In Broiler Diets, Danielle A. Reese Jan 2016

Evaluating The Effect Of Feed Mixing And Sampling Methodologies On Nutrient Analysis And The Inclusion Of A Novel Protease In Broiler Diets, Danielle A. Reese

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Proper poultry feeding requires a homogenous mixture of macro and micro ingredients to ensure feed nutrients are being supplied to meet bird requirements. Samples of complete feed may be taken during manufacture and analyzed for nutrient content in order to estimate if nutrients are present in feed in accordance to diet formulation. However, variables associated with mixing and feed sampling may influence the results of nutrient analysis, thus over or under estimating the formula comparison. The objective of this study was to vary mix time, sample location, sample number, and sample blending technique on nutrient analysis. Ingredients were mixed in …

Interpreting Consultation: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service And Native American Perceptions Of Engagement Practices, Benjamin Barron Richardson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Federal land management agencies are legally required to consult Native American tribes when administering policies that may have tribal implications. Many laws and directives regarding consultation exist, yet agreement on its practical application and management implications remain ambiguous. An ongoing consultation conundrum is occurring in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), where the US Fish & Wildlife Service (Service) has proposed to remove the grizzly bear from the Endangered Species List. Several tribal groups residing within or maintaining cultural ties to the region have contested the movement. The grizzly bear controversy has exposed larger issues implicit to consultation, such as tribal …

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman Jan 2016

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A 2003 paper by Stanley and Powell reported depressed rates of origination and extinction in marine invertebrates during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) as compared to background rates during the Paleozoic. In their paper, trilobites were used as a specific example to support the hypothesis of sluggish evolutionary rates. Thus, can their hypothesis be tested using a different fossil group? Using an updated version of the crinoid database from Sepkoski's 2002 compendium of fossil marine genera, adding data from multiple sources, rates of origination, extinction, and genus duration were calculated at the stage level for the interval from the …

The Effect Of Physicochemical Properties On The Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Induced Genotoxicity And Carcinogenesis, Katelyn J. Siegrist

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are one of the most exciting industrial materials of our time. They are used in life-saving medical therapeutics and many commercial products that could make day-to-day life seem effortless. However, previous toxicological research has demonstrated this material to be significantly genotoxic in both in vitro and in vivo models and potentially carcinogenic in the lung. The unique physiochemical properties of MWCNT make respiratory exposures likely in workers. Combining the genotoxic effects with the potential for lung deposition in the workplace, MWCNT should be considered as a potential health hazard. Altering the physiochemical properties of MWCNT has …

New Australian Plants And Animals. An Exhibition - And - Physiology, Phenomenology And Photography: Picturing The Indeterminate Within An Australian Art Practice. An Exegesis, Michael Gray

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This practice-led research project investigates indeterminate aspects of perception related to human vision and postcolonial conditioning. Through an inventive range of lens-based artworks, the research draws parallels between preconscious visual phenomena and the subjective experience of non-indigenous Australians of multiple generations.

The resulting body of creative work, New Australian Plants and Animals, can be seen to approach preconscious visual phenomena derived from the physiology of the human eye through the use of primitive photographic lens technology. This process is applied to the subject matter: introduced plants and partially naturalised migrants. This synthesis of subject and materials creates new insights …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Much of what is known about the molecular evolution of vertebrate vision comes from studies of mammals, birds and fish. Reptiles (especially snakes) have barely been sampled in previous studies despite their exceptional diversity of retinal photoreceptor complements. Here, we analyze opsin gene sequences and ocular media transmission for up to 69 species to investigate snake visual evolution. Most snakes express three visual opsin genes (rh1, sws1, and lws). These opsin genes (especially rh1 and sws1) have undergone much evolutionary change, including modifications of amino acid residues at sites of known importance for spectral tuning, with several tuning site combinations …

"In Luther’s lectures on the biblical creation account as found in Genesis 1:1 through 2:4, it was not so much the concept of “creation out of nothing,” but the idea of ultimate creation, preservation, and governance by God’s spoken word that formed the main emphasis. Thus, many of the themes touched on in these lectures center in Luther’s picture of God’s nature and character."
