Synthesis Of Biphasic Calcium Phosphate And Its Behaviour In Simulated Body Fluid, Bui X.V, Thang T.D Dec 2016

Synthesis Of Biphasic Calcium Phosphate And Its Behaviour In Simulated Body Fluid, Bui X.V, Thang T.D

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The main goal of this study is to elaborate and evaluate the physicochemical properties of the synthetic biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powder: an associate compound of hydroxyapatite (HA): Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP): Ca3(PO4)2. The new compound BCP has two advantages: high bioactivity (HA) and fast biodegradation (β-TCP). The obtained powder of BCP was prepared by the precipitate method. XRD analysis confirmed the synthetic material contained both HA and β-TCP crystalline phases. SEM images showed that the small particles of HA attached to bigger particles of β-TCP in the structure morphology of BCP. The in vitro experiment was carried out …

Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble Dec 2016

Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble

Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies

Throughout her career, Joyce Carol Oates has resisted the urge of others to label her a feminist writer, insisting that she be considered a writer, independent of biological gender. As America’s “chronicler of the middle class,” she has given voice to countless invisible female character types, but this is only one concern among many. Oates is incredibly active, but rather than to actively incite, she uses her prolific pen to create testimonies to contemporary American life, seeking particularly to give voice to the voiceless among us. In spite of the notions of crime and justice being central to her fiction …

Assessing The Impact Of A Constructed Wetland Biome On The Ecosystem Health Of Cedar Run, Thomas Vasilopoulos, Casey Lee Dec 2016

Assessing The Impact Of A Constructed Wetland Biome On The Ecosystem Health Of Cedar Run, Thomas Vasilopoulos, Casey Lee

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

A wetlands ecosystem is defined as “an area saturated by surface or groundwater at a frequency or duration sufficient to support...a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions” (Batzer and Sharitz, 2007). Wetlands serve as biofilters and thus have been used to treat sewage and wastewater, as well as to restore the health of polluted water systems. Solly Walker and Lorinda Palin, owners of a certified natural and biodynamic farm called Avalon Acres located in Broadway, Virginia, constructed a wetland two years ago, using the stream, Cedar Run, that flows through their property. Pollution from agricultural …

Reintroduction Of Brook Trout To The South River Via Upwelling Springs, Sydni L. Reinhold Dec 2016

Reintroduction Of Brook Trout To The South River Via Upwelling Springs, Sydni L. Reinhold

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Populations of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, throughout Virginia mountain streams have seen a rapid decline due to warmer conditions, decreased oxygen levels, and changes in the main stem streambed (Hudy et al., 2008). Current solutions have stocked more tolerant adult brook trout in the main stem rivers, which is costly and must be repeated yearly (Lennon, 1967). Finding an environment conducive for stocking brook trout eggs rather than adults would be ideal because they would return to this viable location to spawn, making them a self-sustaining population which is less costly and easier to implement. Upwelling springs connected to the …

The Fate Of Icd-1 During Misfolded Protein Induced Apoptosis In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kyle H. Perez Dec 2016

The Fate Of Icd-1 During Misfolded Protein Induced Apoptosis In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kyle H. Perez

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Severe misfolded protein stress initiates cellular responses that often result in the death of the affected cell, typically by apoptosis. An essential aspect of apoptosis is caspase-mediated cleavage of proteins that, once cleaved, further propagate death. One heterodimeric structure putatively targeted in this process in the nascent polypeptide-associated complex (NAC), a translational chaperone thought to help prevent misfolded protein stress in the ER. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the beta subunit of the NAC in C. elegans (ICD-1) is cleaved during the induction of apoptosis, with the hypothesis that ICD-1 is cleaved during stressed-induced apoptosis to …

The Hemostatic Effects Of Acute Exposure To Colored Cornstarch Powder During A 5k Run, Robert C. Allsbrook Dec 2016

The Hemostatic Effects Of Acute Exposure To Colored Cornstarch Powder During A 5k Run, Robert C. Allsbrook

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

PURPOSE: To examine the acute hemostatic effects of particulate matter (PM) in the form of colored corn starch powder during a 5 kilometer race. METHODS: 10 recreationally active adults completed two 5k runs, one with color and one without color. 10 mL blood samples were taken 6 hours prior to the trial and immediately following the trial. PAI-1 activity, FVIII antigen, and tPA activity were measured using an ELISA. RESULTS: No significant main effects or interaction effects (P<0.05) were observed among any of the variables although a trend (P = 0.082) was observed for increased PAI-1 activity during exercise in the color condition. CONCLUSIONS: There is a trend towards increased PAI-1 activity levels during exercise during color runs that could be due to increased inflammation. Furthermore, the lack of increased FVIII:ag and tPA activity suggests that the intensity of the exercise may not have been adequate and further research should be conducted in this area.

Using Brain Stimulation To Enhance Working Memory: A Charged Topic, Michael Christopher Stefan Trumbo Dec 2016

Using Brain Stimulation To Enhance Working Memory: A Charged Topic, Michael Christopher Stefan Trumbo

Psychology ETDs

Although working memory (WM) training programs consistently result in improvement on the trained task, benefit is typically short-lived and extends only to tasks very similar to the trained task. Pairing repeated performance of a WM task with brain stimulation may encourage plasticity in brain networks involved in WM task performance, thereby improving the training benefit. In the current study, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was paired with performance of a WM task. In Experiment 1, participants performed a spatial location-monitoring n-back during stimulation, while Experiment 2 used a verbal identity-monitoring n-back. In each experiment, participants received either active (2.0 mA) …

Mitigating The Impacts Of Human Land-Use Change On Biodiversity: With A Focus On Large Migratory Herbivores, Kina Rebekah Murphy Dec 2016

Mitigating The Impacts Of Human Land-Use Change On Biodiversity: With A Focus On Large Migratory Herbivores, Kina Rebekah Murphy

Biology ETDs

Land-use change, commercial over-harvesting of species, and climate change are recognized as the main drivers of biodiversity loss. As a result, it is estimated that 30% of the planet’s biodiversity may go extinct by 2050. This dissertation focuses on how to mitigate the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity. I focus on large migratory herbivores because they are among the most heavily impacted by global change due to their large home range requirements. Habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting, and human-wildlife conflicts are among the biggest threats to large herbivores and result from land-use change. For this reason, my first chapter focuses …

Factors Influencing The Timing And Frequency Of Moose-Vehicle Collisions At Urban-Wildland Interfaces In Subarctic Alaska, Jacobus Cornelis Noordeloos Dec 2016

Factors Influencing The Timing And Frequency Of Moose-Vehicle Collisions At Urban-Wildland Interfaces In Subarctic Alaska, Jacobus Cornelis Noordeloos

Natural Resources

Wildlife-vehicle collisions concern road engineers, wildlife biologists, and the motoring public. In Alaska, moose-vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the most commonly reported type of wildlife-vehicle collisions. Each year an average of 101 MVCs were reported in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), resulting in damages amounting to $3,000,000/yr. This thesis describes the spatial and temporal patterns of MVCs in the FNSB and uses these patterns to infer the interactions between human and moose behavior that cause them. The analytical approach used combined spatial and temporal records of MVCs collected by the Alaska Department of Transportation with spatially explicit data describing topography, …

Mechanisms Of Modulation Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Arianna L. Demmerly Dec 2016

Mechanisms Of Modulation Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Arianna L. Demmerly

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Inappropriate expression of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system is associated with nicotine addiction, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other disorders. Modulators (drugs) have the potential to restore circuit properties that arise from inappropriate expression of nicotinic receptor's. Compounds that interact with allosteric sites have a distinct advantage over agonists and partial agonists, in that, they retain normal activation patterns by allowing binding of the endogenous ligand. Positive allosteric modulators boost the receptors ability to respond to agonist. Studies of these modulators constitute a first step toward the identification and development of better compounds that minimize signaling errors …

Cloning And Expression Of Bovine Alpha S1 Casein Peptides Of Variable Size And Position Of Sppep Inhibitor Sequence, Avleen Kaur Vishram Dec 2016

Cloning And Expression Of Bovine Alpha S1 Casein Peptides Of Variable Size And Position Of Sppep Inhibitor Sequence, Avleen Kaur Vishram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eurygaster integriceps Puton (Sunn pest) is the most damaging insect pest of wheat in areas of North Africa, Eastern Europe and Western and Central Asia. Sunn pest injects an enzyme characterized as a prolyl endylprotease (spPEP) into wheat grains that digests the gluten protein (Darkoh et al., 2010). Previous studies have shown that casein peptides generated by Lactobacillus species have inhibitory effects on human (hPEP) and bacterial prolyl endoproteases (bPEP) which makes casein a good natural candidate to inhibit spPEP. Developing biopesticides for food products from αS1 casein is complicated due to some allergenic amino acid sequences. Ruiter et al …

Moose Abundance Estimation Using Finite Population Block Kriging On Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, Graham G. Frye Dec 2016

Moose Abundance Estimation Using Finite Population Block Kriging On Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, Graham G. Frye

Mathematics and Statistics

Monitoring the size and demographic characteristics of animal populations is fundamental to the fields of wildlife ecology and wildlife management. A diverse suite of population monitoring methods have been developed and employed during the past century, but challenges in obtaining rigorous population estimates remain. I used simulation to address survey design issues for monitoring a moose population at Togiak National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Alaska using finite population block kriging. In the first chapter, I compared the bias in the Geospatial Population Estimator (GSPE; which uses finite population block kriging to estimate animal abundance) between two survey unit configurations. After …

Colonization Experiences Of Alaskan IñUpiat And Model For Decolonization, Ukallaysaaq Thomas Okleasik Dec 2016

Colonization Experiences Of Alaskan IñUpiat And Model For Decolonization, Ukallaysaaq Thomas Okleasik

Rural Development

This project explores a potential method for examining American, Alaskan and Iñupiaq colonization with a process for decolonization to help restore authentic community self governance that addresses modern socioeconomic challenges and opportunities on terms that will best work in indigenous villages sustainably and effectively. The focus is on Iñupiaq peoples; however, it can be adapted for use by other indigenous peoples. The six-step decolonization process begins with building awareness and understanding the many layers of colonization - both from the colonizer’s perspective and perspective of those subjected to colonization. The decolonization process continues by encompassing healing, revitalization, vision, strategy and …

Seasonal Thermal Habitat Use And Bathymetric Distribution Of Burbot In Tanada And Copper Lakes, Alaska, Heather L. Scannell Dec 2016

Seasonal Thermal Habitat Use And Bathymetric Distribution Of Burbot In Tanada And Copper Lakes, Alaska, Heather L. Scannell

Fisheries

Burbot Lota lota are a cold water, benthic, primarily piscivorous species that inhabits lakes and rivers throughout their Holarctic distribution. Habitat requirements for Burbot are still poorly understood, in part due to the disregard this species has received in fisheries management plans. From June 2009 through September 2011, I investigated the seasonal movements and bathymetric distribution of Burbot in Tanada and Copper lakes, Alaska, using archival tags programmed to record water depth and temperature. One hundred and forty Burbot (70 in each lake) were surgically implanted with archival tags, and 1 year later fish were recaptured to retrieve the archived …

Effects Of Variable Maternal Diet Conditions On The Reproductive Success And Development Of The California Sea Cucumber (Parastichopus Californicus), Charlotte Marie Regula-Whitefield Dec 2016

Effects Of Variable Maternal Diet Conditions On The Reproductive Success And Development Of The California Sea Cucumber (Parastichopus Californicus), Charlotte Marie Regula-Whitefield

Marine Biology

Anthropogenic and natural climate change is altering the biology and ecology of marine organisms, which can be reflected in the supply of primary production that provides food for consumers. Primary producers differ in their biochemical composition, and marine food webs are thus based on specific combinations of producers that provide key nutrients such as dietary fatty acids (FA). Some FA cannot be synthesized by marine invertebrates, and must be acquired directly from diets. Reproductive processes in marine invertebrates are often timed to correspond with seasonal patterns in primary production, such that dietary FA and other nutrients can be partitioned to …

Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho Dec 2016

Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho

Arctic and Northern Studies

The effectiveness of a state's natural resource management is rendered meaningless if the particular resource migrates into another state's jurisdiction. In the case of marine mammals, inadequate management of the species anywhere along their annual migration could make food insecure for the regional human populations. My research evaluates to what extent International Environmental Agreements have been able to manage transboundary challenges to food security. Two case studies, the Polar Bear Agreement (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000) and the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (International Whaling Commission, 1946), are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using Ronald Mitchell's four factors …

Thus Mara’s illness and the vandalisms proved to …

Breeding Ecology Of Whimbrels (Numenius Phaeopus) In Interior Alaska, Christopher M. Harwood Dec 2016

Breeding Ecology Of Whimbrels (Numenius Phaeopus) In Interior Alaska, Christopher M. Harwood

Biological Sciences

Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus breed in tundra-like habitats, both beyond treeline and within the boreal forest of interior Alaska. Despite their widespread distribution and designation as a species of conservation concern, their ecology has been particularly understudied in Alaska. During 2008--2012, I initiated the first dedicated study of Whimbrel breeding ecology in Alaska, and the first such study of any boreal-breeding shorebird in the state. Within a habitat mosaic of forest, woodlands, muskeg, scrub, and ponds within the floodplain of the Kanuti River in north-central Alaska, Whimbrels bred in the three largest (of nine) patches of discontinuous tussock tundra. These Whimbrels …
