Ethanol Extract Of Mangosteen Peel Reduces Histological Count Of Alveolar Macrophage And Pulmonary Alveolar Space Size In Male White Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) Exposed To Cigarette Smoke, Anna Lewi Santoso

Folia Medica Indonesiana

This study aims to analyze histological alveolar macrophage cell number and width of pulmonary alveolar space white male rats given ethanol extract of mangosteen peel and then exposed to cigarette smoke. Smoking can reduce antioxidant and increases free radicals, so it is recommended increasing the antioxidants found in many mangosteen rind. This research was an experimental laboratory using the randomized post test-only control group design. White rats male were chosen randomly into 5 groups (K1, K2, P1, P2, P3). K1 (control-), only the Na-CMC 0.5%, K2 (control+) given Na-CMC 0.5% solution and smoke, P1, P2, P3 given the ethanol extract …

A Field Inventory And Collections Summary Of Herpetofauna From The Sutter Buttes, An "Inland Island" Within California's Great Central Valley, Eric O. Olson, Jackson D. Shedd, Tag N. Engstrom Nov 2016

A Field Inventory And Collections Summary Of Herpetofauna From The Sutter Buttes, An "Inland Island" Within California's Great Central Valley, Eric O. Olson, Jackson D. Shedd, Tag N. Engstrom

Western North American Naturalist

The Sutter Buttes (Buttes) are a small, isolated mountain range in the Great Central Valley of California. Systematic study of the fauna and flora of this unique habitat has been limited by the private ownership of the entire mountain range. As a result, much of our knowledge about the herpetofauna of the Buttes is based on isolated observations and scattered museum records, most over 4 decades old. In this study, we present an updated inventory of the herpetofauna of the Buttes, based on a 2-year field survey within the boundaries of the first publicly protected property within the Buttes (Sutter …

The Apocalypse Narrative And The Internet: Divided Relationships In New Natures, Brooks Scott Benadum Nov 2016

The Apocalypse Narrative And The Internet: Divided Relationships In New Natures, Brooks Scott Benadum

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project proposes that one factor of growing societal interest in the apocalypse narrative is rooted in these stories reflection on our new landscape of telecommunication flows embodied in the Internet. The apocalypse narrative has steadily been growing in popularity, and many academics have offered potential explanations. While other analyses predominately focus on the actual apocalyptic event itself as representative of various societal fears, this project aims to focus on aspects of how we adapt to being in the new apocalyptic landscape, and how this reflects on our own adaptation to being in the new landscape of the Internet. This …

‘These People Have No Clue About Us, The Land, Or How We Live!’: Second Generation Human Rights Along The Texas–Mexico Border, Jennifer G. Correa Ph.D, Tola Olu Pearce Ph.D Nov 2016

‘These People Have No Clue About Us, The Land, Or How We Live!’: Second Generation Human Rights Along The Texas–Mexico Border, Jennifer G. Correa Ph.D, Tola Olu Pearce Ph.D

Societies Without Borders

In this study, we wish to turn attention to how the international human rights framework, developed under the auspices of the United Nations in 1948, is being used by different communities, in particular, the Texas-Mexico border. We emphasize that while the articles contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have, at times, served as a protective platform upon which activists have been able to build, these articles cannot responsibly be imposed without attending to and incorporating the voices of those on the ground. Using both qualitative and ethnographic methods, our objective is to amplify specific voices by analyzing how …

Engineering Small Molecule Based Dimerization To Induce Translation And Provide Optogenetic Control, Catherine Wright Nov 2016

Engineering Small Molecule Based Dimerization To Induce Translation And Provide Optogenetic Control, Catherine Wright

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

We wanted to develop a system that combines the spatial control of photoactivation and control of translation to build a tool to spatially control translation in neurons. This kind of tool could be used to investigate the role of spatially controlled translation of any protein in neural behavior. In this way the development and growth of neural processes could be studied to elucidate the mechanisms for spatially sensitive events such as pathfinding, repair, or long-term potentiation.

Chemically induced dimerization was used to install a switch into the activation of translation for specific genes. An abscisic acid (ABA) dependent dimerization of …

Current And Emerging Uses Of Statins In Clinical Therapeutics: A Review, Jonathan T. Davies, Spencer F. Delfino, Chad E. Feinberg, Meghan F. Johnson, Veronica L. Nappi, Joshua T. Olinger, Anthony P. Schwab, Hollie I. Swanson Nov 2016

Current And Emerging Uses Of Statins In Clinical Therapeutics: A Review, Jonathan T. Davies, Spencer F. Delfino, Chad E. Feinberg, Meghan F. Johnson, Veronica L. Nappi, Joshua T. Olinger, Anthony P. Schwab, Hollie I. Swanson

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Statins, a class of cholesterol-lowering medications that inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, are commonly administered to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Statin use may expand considerably given its potential for treating an array of cholesterol-independent diseases. However, the lack of conclusive evidence supporting these emerging therapeutic uses of statins brings to the fore a number of unanswered questions including uncertainties regarding patient-to-patient variability in response to statins, the most appropriate statin to be used for the desired effect, and the efficacy of statins in treating cholesterol-independent diseases. In this review, the adverse effects, costs, and drug–drug and drug–food interactions associated with statin …

The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione Nov 2016

The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione

Dissertations and Theses

The incidence of autism has increased tremendously over the past 20 years; however, the tools used for diagnosis and educational identification have largely remained the same. Diagnostic and educational decisions are based on observations and interactions to identify hallmark skill deficits associated with autism. Research demonstrates behaviors are affected by the environment, and real-time data collection is more accurate than reflective methods.

The problem is current autism diagnostic and educational identification tools lack essential features. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), considered the gold standard, relies on contrived settings, and lacks an observational comparison to same aged peers. Autism behavior …

The Interplay Of Tlr9, Myeloid Cells, And A20 In Periodontal Inflammation, Katie E. Crump, Jennifer C. Oakley, Xia Xia-Juan, Theandra C. Madu, Swathi Devaki, Erin C. Mooney, Sinem E. Sahingur

Biology Faculty Articles

TLR9 deficient (TLR9-/-) mice are resistant to periodontitis, a disease characterized by a dysbiotic microbiota and deregulated immune response resulting in tooth loss and various systemic conditions. However, the mechanisms and biological pathways by which TLR9 instigates periodontal inflammation are yet to be identified. In a ligature-induced model of periodontitis, we demonstrate TLR9-/- mice exhibited significantly less alveolar bone loss compared to their wild-type (WT) counterparts. Consistent with the disease phenotype, gingival tissues showed significantly more inflammatory cell infiltrate in the WT ligated but not in the TLR9-/- ligated mice compared to their unligated controls. Peritoneal …

Enhancing Developing Relationships With Skin-To-Skin Contact, Dorothy J. Vittner Nov 2016

Enhancing Developing Relationships With Skin-To-Skin Contact, Dorothy J. Vittner

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 15 million premature infants are born annually around the world. It has been optimistically yet incorrectly proposed that healthy preterm infants without major complications eventually catch-up developmentally to full-term infants. Maternal touch, especially during skin to-skin contact (SSC) has the potential to reduce adverse consequences of prematurity. The aim of this dissertation is to increase understanding of mechanisms that link parent infant contact to bio-behavioral responses for parents and their healthy preterm infants. This study is an important step in exploring oxytocin as a potential moderator to improve infant developmental outcomes and the effects of SSC on the mother, …

Buddhism And Women-The Dhamma Has No Gender, Chand R. Sirimanne Nov 2016

Buddhism And Women-The Dhamma Has No Gender, Chand R. Sirimanne

Journal of International Women's Studies

The increasing influence and relevance of Buddhism in a global society have given rise to a vibrant and evolving movement, particularly in the West, loosely called Socially Engaged Buddhism. Today many look to Buddhism for an answer to one of the most crucial issues of all time—eradicating discrimination against women. There is general agreement that Buddhism does not have a reformist agenda or an explicit feminist theory. This paper explores this issue from a Theravāda Buddhist perspective using the scriptures as well as recent work by Western scholars conceding that there are deep seated patriarchal and even misogynistic elements reflected …

Dignity And Empowerment: An Exploration Of The Microcredit Experiences Of Women In Rural Bangladesh, Rahima K. Lipi Nov 2016

Dignity And Empowerment: An Exploration Of The Microcredit Experiences Of Women In Rural Bangladesh, Rahima K. Lipi

Journal of International Women's Studies

Modern microcredit, as a tool for economic and social development, emerged with the assumption that it would promote women’s empowerment. Some researchers have found that microcredit has had a significant amount of success. However, some of these supportive studies have also ignored the subjective history of the participants. A second critical view of microcredit presents the practice as a Western World notion which exploits women as a tool of the market economy in order to gain profit, arguing that it has failed to provide an alternative to women’s vulnerability and survival. This article focuses on the drawbacks of both approaches. …

Effects Of Armed Conflict On Agricultural Markets And Post-Conflict Engagement Of Women In Export-Led Agriculture In Nepal, Bishnu Raj Upreti, Yamuna Ghale, Sony Kc

Journal of International Women's Studies

Nepal entered into a new era after ending 10 years of civil war through signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the government and the rebel radical Maoist party in November, 2006. Women’s positions were constitutionally secured and space widened for the engagement of women in the broad social, political and economic spheres. Therefore, the post-conflict context provided tremendous opportunities for women to engage in high value commercial agricultural business. The main objectives of the study were a) to examine the effects of armed conflict on agricultural markets, and b) to analyse the state of women’s engagement in high value …

Rural Women Artists: A Visual Analysis Of The Mural Art Forms Of Santhal Pargana, Jharkhand, India, Pallavi Rani, D. Udaya Kumar, Saheb Ram Tudu, Shilpi Bora

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women are the pioneers of traditional mural art practices in rural India. Warli art, Gond art, and Madhubani paintings are examples of their artworks. The women belonging to the Santhal region in eastern India, are highly skilled in rich rural vernacular art. Murals are generally created by them during local festivals and marriage ceremonies. The women of six districts that comprise the Santhal Pargana (Dumka, Godda, Deoghar, Jamtara, Pakur and Sahibganj), decorate their mud houses during these occasions with visual borders and motifs.

A pilot study was carried out with the women artists to research these murals. The framework for …

The Role Of Religion In Mitigating Cancer Disparities Among Black Americans, Samar Hennawi Nov 2016

The Role Of Religion In Mitigating Cancer Disparities Among Black Americans, Samar Hennawi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The long history of racism has created cultural barriers that prevent some Black Americans from seeking cancer treatment. Fatalism, physician mistrust, low levels of social support and self-efficacy, are the most cited cultural barriers in the literature. Black Americans’ religious beliefs and church involvement have historically helped them in their struggle against racism. A quantitative and a qualitative comparison studies examine the role of Black cancer survivors’ religious beliefs in their fight against cancer. The quantitative comparison study finds no difference in the cultural attitudes between Black and White cancer survivors. However, the qualitative comparison study between the same two …

Literary And Theatrical Circulations In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Rwanda And Burundi, From The Belgian Colonial Empire To The Africa Of The Great Lakes., Maëline Le Lay

Artl@s Bulletin

This article on literary and theatrical circulations in Africa’s Great Lakes region begins by retracing the history of these practices, taking several examples from the colonial period. It then analyzes contemporary modalities of the circulation of texts (via procedures such as reprising narrative patterns and adaptation), and cultural actors, in the different transnational arts networks that are more or less closely tied to the humanitarian sector, or to international cooperation. Finally, it proposes a critical questioning of the concept of artistic circulation.
