Chaucerian Imperfections: The Other And The Turbulant Self, Ahmed Seif
Chaucerian Imperfections: The Other And The Turbulant Self, Ahmed Seif
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is interested in forms of “imperfection” in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. I define “imperfection” as an authorial gesture performed to narrate an idealized virwhile depriving it from its idealism. The imperfection of a virtue, however, does not happen absolutely. It is the character’s incomplete, distorted, or decadent command of a given virtue, rather than the viritself, that makes it imperfect. Consisting of three chapters, the thesis examines Chaucer’s imperfection of things idealized within two medieval spaces: a) the ecclesiastical institution of Church and b) the secular institution of Knighthood. This is why the thesis settled on the Prioress’s …
How The Soul Slips In: Virginia Woolf's (Un)Natural History Of Dogs, Allison Castle Combs
How The Soul Slips In: Virginia Woolf's (Un)Natural History Of Dogs, Allison Castle Combs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dogs have a crucial place in articulating ideas about class and sexuality in Woolf and her milieu. Her works move from considering dogs as representative instruments of class and gender in Mrs. Dalloway, to thinking more complexly about the dog/human boundary in Orlando. Human-to-animal ontologies are an evaluation of human biopolitical affiliations, where human social categories and function are embedded and reflected in canine behavior. The “anthropological machine” and the fabulated nature of the human world is exposed in contact zones associated with problems of sexuality, class, and gender, as these internal and external distinctions are able to evade human …

By exploring the intertwined histories of the automobile, policing, criminal procedure, and the administrative state in the twentieth-century United States, this Essay argues that the growth of the police’s discretionary authority had its roots in the governance of an automotive society. To tell this history and the proliferation of procedural rights that developed as a solution to abuses of police discretion, this Essay examines the life and oeuvre of Charles Reich, an administrative-law expert in the 1960s who wrote about his own encounters with the police, particularly in his car. The Essay concludes that, in light of this regulatory history …

Voter Welfare: An Emerging Rule Of Reason In Voting Rights Law, Samuel Issacharoff
Voter Welfare: An Emerging Rule Of Reason In Voting Rights Law, Samuel Issacharoff
Faculty Articles
For the first time in at least a generation, the central focus of voting rights law has returned to the issue of eligibility to cast a ballot and the act of voting itself. Unlike in prior generations, the fights over voting are centrally part of a partisan battle for electoral supremacy and are not organized around perpetuating the historic sub-ordination of minority populations—whatever the localized impact on minorities that the new voting rules may trigger. In the partisan environment, courts face claims of exclusion that only imperfectly map onto constitutional prohibitions of discrimina-tory intent or statutory protections of minority voting …

Feasibility Study Of Renewable Energy Systems For Off-Grid Islands: A Case Study Concerning Cuttyhunk Island, Marvin Alexander Görgen
Feasibility Study Of Renewable Energy Systems For Off-Grid Islands: A Case Study Concerning Cuttyhunk Island, Marvin Alexander Görgen
Open Access Master's Theses
Renewable energy can be a promising approach to supply energy for remote areas and islands, address price volatility of fuels, hedge against supply insecurities, and reduce CO2 emissions. Renewable energy has the power to create self-sufficiency in terms of electricity and the ability to be cost-effective and competitive in many areas. However, renewable energies are site specific. It is necessary to assess each case study separately to examine the available resources, environmental constraints, and socio-economic factors. Site assessments include resource characterization, technical practicability, economic feasibility, and market conditions.
The objective of this thesis is to assess the feasibility of …

Saffron Extract And Its Active Constituents As Preventative And/Or Treatment Agents For Prostate Cancer Using In Vitro And In Vivo Models, Faisal Fayih Albaqami
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Saffron extract and its active constituents were evaluated as chemopreventatives and/or treatments for prostate cancer. Different models of prostate cancer (in vitro and in vivo) were used for studying saffron and its constituents’ mechanisms. In normal prostate cells, saffron extract, crocetin, and safranal, in non-toxic concentrations, possessed antioxidant properties against the reactive oxygen species induced by H2O2 which further supports saffron constituents as chemopreventative agents. Moreover, saffron and its active constituents produced cytotoxicity in prostate cancer cells through intrinsic apoptosis pathways. Potential efficacy in minimizing prostate cancer metastasis was also examined. Saffron extract, crocetin, and safranal decreased the migration and …
Representation Of The American South In Marvel Comics, 1963-2016, Katherine Gill
Representation Of The American South In Marvel Comics, 1963-2016, Katherine Gill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My work tracks the role of the American South and Southern characters in Marvel Comics, from 1963 to 2016. This thesis spring from a simple question: how stereotypical does this Northern industry portray the American South? To achieve this goal, I read a lot of comics, applying literary theory (such as Patricia Yeager and Tara McPherson) as well as American cultural studies (1980s televangelism and the history of human trafficking in America) to my findings. After reading multiple comic books from multiple sources, I settled on four different texts, each with a unique approach to portraying the South: the portrayal …
The Acute And Chronic Muscle Adaptations Following Six Weeks Of "No Load" And Traditional High Load Resistance Training, Brittany Counts
The Acute And Chronic Muscle Adaptations Following Six Weeks Of "No Load" And Traditional High Load Resistance Training, Brittany Counts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Muscle growth is postulated to occur through mechanisms initiated by local muscle tension. This appears to be true, independent of the external load, provided sufficient tension is achieved. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to remove the influence of an external load and compare the acute and chronic muscle adaptations of “No Load” training to traditional High Load training. METHODS: Thirteen participants completed six weeks of thrice weekly unilateral elbow flexion exercise. Using a within subject design, each arm was designated to either the No Load or the High Load (70% one repetition maximum) condition. The No Load condition …
Cortex Necessary For Pain — But Not In Sense That Matters, Adam J. Shriver
Cortex Necessary For Pain — But Not In Sense That Matters, Adam J. Shriver
Animal Sentience
Certain cortical regions are necessary for pain in humans in the sense that, at particular times, they play a direct role in pain. However, it is not true that they are necessary in the more important sense that pain is never possible in humans without them. There are additional details from human lesion studies concerning functional plasticity that undermine Key’s (2016) interpretation. Moreover, no one has yet identified any specific behaviors that mammalian cortical pain regions make possible that are absent in fish.
Devaluation As A Strategy To Address Behaviourally Whether Fish Feel, Robert Ian Bowers
Devaluation As A Strategy To Address Behaviourally Whether Fish Feel, Robert Ian Bowers
Animal Sentience
Failures of behavioural studies to address the question of whether fish feel pain have left scientists arguing on the basis of other criteria, including anatomy. I draw an analogy with a debate concerning the breadth of stimulus-response learning among nonhuman animals and propose an experiment that harks back to one solution to that debate: the devaluation paradigm. By changing the value of a noxious stimulus after training, one can differentiate a directly evoked response from a response to an intermediate representation, the pain.
Bound Bodies: Book Use And The Early Modern Reader, 1450-1660, Emily Rendek
Bound Bodies: Book Use And The Early Modern Reader, 1450-1660, Emily Rendek
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the act of reading during the early modern period. Examining both the text block and the margins of printed pages, this project contends that early modern reading practices create a hybrid book/body circuit. The texts selected for this project provide a depiction of not only how the act of reading functioned during the early modern period but also reveal the manner in which reading was presented to audiences and readers on the stage and printed page. This project resists a linear, chronological narrative of the act of reading and instead makes evident different versions of reading and …
Efficacious Uncertainty In Two Animal Texts: The Lives Of Animals By J. M. Coetzee And "The Animal That Therefore I Am (More To Follow)" By Jacques Derrida, Kristofer Jon Reed
Efficacious Uncertainty In Two Animal Texts: The Lives Of Animals By J. M. Coetzee And "The Animal That Therefore I Am (More To Follow)" By Jacques Derrida, Kristofer Jon Reed
Theses and Dissertations
Jacques Derrida divides all texts into two categories in light of human encounters with animals. On the one hand are texts produced by those who may have devoted thought and attention to animals but have not imagined that animals might have a gaze of their own directed back at humans. On the other hand are texts produced by those whose thought and attention to animals has indeed been troubled, perplexed, and complicated by the recognition of an animal’s reciprocal gaze. Derrida’s own text, “The Animal That Therefore I Am (More to Follow),” in which he distinguishes between these two kinds …

John Wolcot And “The Anecdotic Itch”: Peter Pindar, Biography, And Historiography In The 1780s, Dafydd Moore
Professional Services
John Wolcot, under his nom de plume of Peter Pindar, was one of the most popular satirists of the late eighteenth century. Today his work is primarily known for his anti-ministerial satires during the 1790s and discussed in terms of its radical credentials in ways that have narrowed our understanding of his achievement and interests. This essay reads three of Wolcot's key poems from the 1780s in terms of his focus on the use of anecdote in writing history and biography, and his self-conscious interest in writing about great men. In A Poetical and Congratulatory Epistle to James Boswell, Esq …

Multifunctional Nanocarriers For Cancer Therapy, Bei Cheng
Multifunctional Nanocarriers For Cancer Therapy, Bei Cheng
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is one of the leading causes of human mortality and mortality in all diseases. There has been a boost in developing nanocarrier-based therapies for treating cancer or other diseases during the past decade. One of the major advantages about nanocarrier (with the size range from 1-1000 nm) lies in its ability to specifically target tumor and maximize drug accumulation in tumor foci through the enhanced permeability and retention effect. Advancement in nanotechnology has opened a new paradigm in pharmaceutical field. But new challenges have to be overcome in order to fully exploit the technology and improve safety in clinical …

The Effect Of Proanthocyanidin On Formaldehyde-Induced Toxicity In Rat Testes, Eni̇s Uluçam, Elvan Bakar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: This study investigated the effect of proanthocyanidin (PA) against formaldehyde (FA)-induced lipid peroxidation damage and morphological changes in rat testes. Materials and methods: Twenty-one Wistar albino rats were randomized into 3 groups: control, FA, and FA + PA groups. Plasma and tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and total sialic acid (TSA) levels were measured. Testes tissues were observed by light and electron microscopy. Results: TSA (plasma and tissue) levels decreased and MDA (plasma) significantly increased (P < 0.05) in rats treated with FA compared to the controls. Tissue MDA levels were not significantly different. Several necrotic changes were observed in testes tissues by light and electron microscopy. Disordering in epithelia of seminiferous tubules, vacuolization between germinal epithelium cells, and separated basement membranes were observed by light microscope. Immunopositivity in Leydig cells decreased in the FA group (P < 0.05). In the FA + PA group there were more immune Leydig cells reacting immune-positively than in the FA group (P < 0.05). Ultrastructurally, FA also caused disorganization and loss of mitochondrial cristae, and dilatation in endoplasmic reticulum in testes. Conclusion: The results suggest that PA has a protective effect on FA toxicity in testes.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Vitiligo is a common depigmenting disorder. The damage can also occur in similar ways to melanocytes within other organs. We evaluated the brainstem and auditory pathway functions by evaluating brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and whether there is any relationship between auditory functions and autoimmunity. Materials and methods: Forty patients with vitiligo and 20 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Thyroid functions and autoantibodies were examined and BAEP tests were assessed by a neurologist. Results: Antithyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and antithyroglobulin (anti-TGA) antibody positivity was higher in the patient group (P < 0.05). A negative correlation was detected between anti-TPO and lead III, IV, and V latency and I?III interpeak latency (IPL) of the right ear together with lead IV latency and I?V IPL of the left ear in the patient group. When each BAEP parameter was compared between the two groups, more abnormalities were detected in the V latency and III?V IPL of the left ear together with IV and V latency of the right ear. Conclusion: In this study the presence of a correlation between increased anti-TGA and anti-TPO levels and BAEP parameters may be related to an autoimmune-mediated mechanism. However, further studies are needed to be performed in a large patient series.
