An Hf/Uhf Dual Mode Rfid Transponder Antenna And Hf Range Extension Using Uhf Wireless Power Transmission, Mustafa Murat Bi̇lgi̇ç, Korkut Yeği̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
An HF/UHF compatible RFID transponder antenna is designed, simulated, and measured for dual band operation and HF range extension. A dual mode compatible RFID transponder antenna has the benefits of each mode and eliminates the disadvantages of single mode operation. One of the major drawbacks of UHF antennas is their poor performance when the tag is placed on or near metallic objects. To overcome this shortcoming, two-layer substrate with degenerate grounded is used and a 4-turn spiral antenna is placed on the top and bottom parts of the substrate for HF operation. The co-existence of both antennas affects standalone performances …
Practising Teaching Using Virtual Classroom Role Plays, Barney Dalgarno, Sue Gregory, Vicki Knox, Torsten Reiners
Practising Teaching Using Virtual Classroom Role Plays, Barney Dalgarno, Sue Gregory, Vicki Knox, Torsten Reiners
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Practice in the role of the teacher is an essential part of teacher education, however professional experience placements are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Consequently, additional university-based teaching practice, such as classroom role play with student teacher peers is important. Classroom role plays can be effective but there are limits to the realism of the experience and such strategies are not feasible for students studying at a distance. This article reports on a study in which a classroom in the virtual world of Second Life was used to house role plays of student teachers in preparation for their first professional …

Slowmation: An Innovative Twenty-First Century Teaching And Learning Tool For Science And Mathematics Pre-Service Teachers, Kathryn Paige, Brendan Bentley, Stephen Dobson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Slowmation is a twenty-first century digital literacy educational tool. This teaching and learning tool has been incorporated as an assessment strategy in the curriculum area of science and mathematics with pre-service teachers (PSTs). This paper explores two themes: developing twenty-first century digital literacy skills and modelling best practice assessment tools. In the growing debate about the impact of multi-model representations, researchers such as Hoban and Nielsen, and Brown, Murcia and Hackling emphasise the development of conceptual understandings and semiotics. This paper focuses on PSTs’ experiences of and reflections on Slowmation as an educational tool. Data was collected from a cohort …

Adventurous Lives: Teacher Qualities For 21st Century Learning, Julie Faulkner, Gloria Latham
Adventurous Lives: Teacher Qualities For 21st Century Learning, Julie Faulkner, Gloria Latham
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
What kinds of teachers are needed for 21st century learners? While there is recognition that curriculum content, classroom practices and learning environments must alter, there is less attention focussed on the teachers’ dispositions for negotiating uncertainty. In this paper, the authors turn their attention to the importance of teachers’ lives and mindsets to meet current, emerging and future challenges. Using a narrative inquiry approach, they elicit and examine three of these essential qualities: adventure, resilience and creative problem-solving. These characteristics emerge from interviewing a small group of beginning and experienced teachers who were questioning normative practices and exploring possibilities …
Kindergarten Children Demonstrating Numeracy Concepts Through Drawings And Explanations: Intentional Teaching Within Play-Based Learning, Philemon Chigeza, Reesa Sorin
Kindergarten Children Demonstrating Numeracy Concepts Through Drawings And Explanations: Intentional Teaching Within Play-Based Learning, Philemon Chigeza, Reesa Sorin
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Using both child-guided and adult-guided learning, Intentional Teaching in the early years can be a powerful tool for enhancing young children’s numeracy skills. As Epstein (2009) notes, this can include providing “opportunities for children to represent things by drawing, building and moving” (p. 47). This paper investigates how kindergarten (four-five year olds) children represented and demonstrated numeracy concepts through their drawings and explanations, completed for a research study that used arts-based strategies to enhance children’s environmental understanding. This research study involved kindergarten children in Australia creating and exchanging postcards (drawings and explanations) of their local environments with their peers in …
Feedback On Second Language Pronunciation: A Case Study Of Eap Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Amanda Baker, Michael Burri
Feedback On Second Language Pronunciation: A Case Study Of Eap Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Amanda Baker, Michael Burri
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In the modern English language classroom,
Abstract: In the modern English language classroom, teachers are often faced with the challenging task of supporting students to achieve comprehensible pronunciation, but many teachers limit or neglect giving students feedback on their pronunciation for a variety of reasons. This paper examines the case of five experienced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructors who strive to provide feedback on specific features of pronunciation that negatively affect students’ comprehensibility. Results derived from semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews reveal that the teachers use similar approaches to select and provide feedback on problematic features …

A Common Language? The Use Of Teaching Standards In The Assessment Of Professional Experience: Teacher Education Students’ Perceptions, Tony Loughland, Neville Ellis
A Common Language? The Use Of Teaching Standards In The Assessment Of Professional Experience: Teacher Education Students’ Perceptions, Tony Loughland, Neville Ellis
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
There is a strong critique of the reductionist, technical and instrumentalist impacts of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers from critical policy researchers in education. At the same time, advocates of the standards espouse their potential as providing a common language of teaching. We argue that both views are based on logical rather than empirical warrants. Therefore, this study sought to gather empirical data via a survey of 229 teacher education students followed by focus groups in an endeavour to record their perceptions on the use of the standards as assessment criteria for professional experience. The findings are that a …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Soybeans have been a favored livestock forage for centuries. However, only a few studies have been conducted to estimate the forage quality of soybean by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). In this study, 353 forage soybean samples were used to develop near-infrared reflectance (NIR) equations to estimate four forage quality parameters: crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). Samples included 181 recombinant inbred lines derived from PI 483463 (G. Soja) × Hutcheson (G. Max), 104 cultivated soybeans (G. Max), and 68 wild soybeans (G. Soja). Two NIR equations developed for CP and CF …

Throughout its half a century of development, stem cell research has included two main fields: embryonic stem (ES) cell research and the reprogramming of body somatic cells. In the present review we focused on stem cell reprogramming and its relation with otolaryngology. The human body somatic cells are transformed into pluripotent cells by three basic methods: the somatic nuclear transfer method, the somatic cell fusion method (getting cellular pluripotent capacity in cellular reprogramming), and by transcription factors influencing the body somatic cells to generate reprogrammed induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. ES cells and iPS cells have pluripotency and differentiate into …

Inheritance Of Fuzz And Lint Fiber Initiation Of Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.), Adem Bardak, Yüksel Bölek
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Fibers of cultivated cotton are classified into two types, lint and fuzz. Fuzzless seeds are cotton seeds lacking fuzz on almost the whole surface of the seed except for small amounts of fuzz at the micropylar or chalazal regions. Fuzzless seeds provide a number of advantages such as avoiding delintation processes and increasing the quality of feed rations. Therefore, it is important to develop varieties having seeds without fuzz but with high fiber ratios. This study, in which three different F2 populations have been developed by using three distinct genotypes as parents, was conducted to investigate the quantitative inheritance of …

For a long time, arbitration was the only game in town for parties who wanted more flexibility in the adjudication of their disputes. They faced a dichotomous choice between accepting the public court system and its attendant procedural rules or opting out entirely and resolving their disputes in arbitration. Private process, however, "has migrated in surprising ways into the public courts: despite public rules of procedure, judicial decisions increasingly are based on rules of procedure drafted by the parties . . . ." This sort of private procedural ordering gives parties the ability to unbundle the off-the-rack procedures applied in …

Finding Aids
The John F. Welsh Collection of Libertarian and Individualist Thought consists of books, periodicals, and pamphlets that discuss various aspects of the history and theory of individualist and egoist anarchism. Since its origin in 1987, the Collection has expanded to include literature on Ayn Rand and Objectivism, the Austrian School of Economics, Libertarianism, and the egoist thought of Max Stirner. Dr. Welsh's initial advocacy and continuing contributions to the Collection have produced the greatly expanded "Liberty Library," which houses not only the Welsh Special Collection, but also other collections donated by authors and collectors of libertarian, individualist, and anarchist literature.

Shaking The Foundations Of The Law: Some Legal Issues Posed By A Detection Of Extra-Terrestrial Life, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
In order to properly address the legal issues posed by a proper detection of extra-terrestrial life (not just a mere serious possibility, as with the recent discovery of actual water on Mars), because of its extraordinary character it is necessary to briefly revisit the foundations of ‘the law’ as a social construct, and explore its relationship to ‘ethics’ as another social construct. The type of ‘law’ being discussed here is, of course, man-made, and made to deal with human activities, including human reactions to (other) events. Human-made law has for example been defined as “the principles and regulations established in …

Preserving Prairies: Understanding Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Invasive Annual Bromes In The Northern Great Plains, Isabel W. Ashton, Amy J. Symstad, Christopher J. Davis, Daniel J. Swanson
United States National Park Service: Publications
Two Eurasian invasive annual brome grasses, cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus), are well known for their impact in steppe ecosystems of the western United States where these grasses have altered fire regimes, reduced native plant diversity and abundance, and degraded wildlife habitat. Annual bromes are also abundant in the grasslands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), but their impact and ecology are not as well studied. It is unclear whether the lessons learned from the steppe will translate to the mixed-grass prairie where native plant species are adapted to frequent fires and grazing. …

For group-living mammals, social coordination increases success in everything from hunting and foraging (Crofoot and Wrangham in Mind the Gap, Springer, Berlin, 2010; Bailey et al. in Behav Ecol Sociobiol 67:1–17, 2013) to agonism (Mosser and Packer in Anim Behav 78:359–370, 2009; Wilson et al. in Anim Behav 83:277–291, 2012; Cassidy et al. in Behav Ecol 26:1352–1360, 2015). Cooperation is found in many species and, due to its low costs, likely is a determining factor in the evolution of living in social groups (Smith in Anim Behav 92:291–304, 2014). Beyond cooperation, many mammals perform costly behaviors for the benefit of …

Transformative governance is an approach to environmental governance that has the capacity to respond to, manage, and trigger regime shifts in coupled social-ecological systems (SESs) at multiple scales. The goal of transformative governance is to actively shift degraded SESs to alternative, more desirable, or more functional regimes by altering the structures and processes that define the system. Transformative governance is rooted in ecological theories to explain cross-scale dynamics in complex systems, as well as social theories of change, innovation, and technological transformation. Similar to adaptive governance, transformative governance involves a broad set of governance components, but requires additional capacity to …
