Pseudogymnoascus Destructans Transcriptome Changes During White-Nose Syndrome Infections, Sophia M. Reeder, Jonathan M. Palmer, Jenni M. Prokkola Nov 2016

Pseudogymnoascus Destructans Transcriptome Changes During White-Nose Syndrome Infections, Sophia M. Reeder, Jonathan M. Palmer, Jenni M. Prokkola

KIP Articles

White nose syndrome (WNS) is caused by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans that can grow in the environment saprotrophically or parasitically by infecting hibernating bats. Infections are pathological in many species of North American bats, disrupting hibernation and causing mortality. To determine what fungal pathways are involved in infection of living tissue, we examined fungal gene expression using RNA-Seq. We compared P. destructans gene expression when grown in culture to that during infection of a North American bat species, Myotis lucifugus, that shows high WNS mortality. Cultured P. destructans was grown at 10 to 14 C and P. destructans growing …

A Bio-Wicking System To Mitigate Capillary Water In Base Course, Chuang Lin, Xiong Zhang Nov 2016

A Bio-Wicking System To Mitigate Capillary Water In Base Course, Chuang Lin, Xiong Zhang

CESTiCC Project Reports

Water within pavement layers is the major cause of pavement deteriorations. High water content results in significant reduction in soil’s resilient behavior and increase in permanent deformation. Conventional drainage systems can only drain gravity water but not capillary water. Both preliminary lab and field tests have proven the drainage efficiency of a newly developed H2Ri geotextile with wicking fabrics. This bio-wicking system aims at resolving the potential issues that the original design may encounter: (1) H2Ri ultraviolet degradation, (2) H2Ri mechanical failure, (3) loss of drainage function under high suction, and (4) clogging and salt concentration. Both elemental level and …

Fluctuating Temperatures Alter Environmental Pathogen Transmission In A Daphnia–Pathogen System, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake Nov 2016

Fluctuating Temperatures Alter Environmental Pathogen Transmission In A Daphnia–Pathogen System, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake

Faculty Publications

Environmental conditions are rarely constant, but instead vary spatially and temporally. This variation influences ecological interactions and epidemiological dynamics, yet most experimental studies examine interactions under constant conditions. We examined the effects of variability in temperature on the host–pathogen relationship between an aquatic zooplankton host (Daphnia laevis) and an environmentally transmitted fungal pathogen (Metschnikowia bicuspidata). We manipulated temperature variability by exposing all populations to mean temperatures of 20°C for the length of the experiments, but introducing periods of 1, 2, and 4 hr each day where the populations were exposed to 28°C followed by periods of …

Hydrodeoxygenation Of Pinyon Juniper Catalytic Pyrolysis Oil To Hydrocarbon Fuels, Hossein Jahromi, Foster Agblevor Nov 2016

Hydrodeoxygenation Of Pinyon Juniper Catalytic Pyrolysis Oil To Hydrocarbon Fuels, Hossein Jahromi, Foster Agblevor

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

As a renewable source, biomass is an essential option for diminishing dependence on conventional fossil fuel energy sources. Pyrolysis is a promising technology for the conversion of biomass into liquid fuels. However, several challenges associated with using pyrolysis oils such as their high acidity and low energy content inhibit their direct use as transportation fuels. We conducted a batch hydrodeoxygenation of pinyon juniper catalytic pyrolysis oil using Ni/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst to improve the following properties of the oil: heating value, acidity, oxygen content, water content, and viscosity. During the hydrogenation process, the influence of four experimental factors; temperature, catalyst loading, residence …

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John Jackson Nov 2016

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John Jackson

Librarian Publications & Presentations

One of the five strategic goals of the William H. Hannon Library is to contribute to “formative and transformative education of the whole person through outreach and programming.” Through events such as the annual Haunting of Hannon, the Hannon Human Library, and the Spring Women’s Voices series, the library outreach team at Loyola Marymount University seeks to create experiences that reach beyond connecting students to information resources and highlight the library as a transformative force in student life. Measuring the success of these experiences requires targeted evaluation methods similar to those used for library instruction. This presentation will outline the …

Limited parent/caregiver (P/C) knowledge regarding BCAA inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) could negatively impact patients' serum BCAA levels, resulting in adverse health outcomes. This study's purpose was to identify relationships between P/C's demographics and understanding of BCAA IEM to patient's serum leucine level. Participants included P/C and patients with a BCAA IEM. During patients' appointments, questionnaires were administered to P/Cs eliciting understanding of BCAA IEM and demographics. Regression analyses estimated relationships between P/C understanding of BCAA IEM and demographic factors to patients' serum leucine levels. No correlation was observed between P/C understanding of BCAA IEM and patient's serum leucine level. …

Intermediate Filament Protein Synemin: Regulation By Exogenous Factors And Role In Astrocytoma Cell Proliferation Through Interaction With Protein Phosphatase 2a, Madhumita Paul Nov 2016

Intermediate Filament Protein Synemin: Regulation By Exogenous Factors And Role In Astrocytoma Cell Proliferation Through Interaction With Protein Phosphatase 2a, Madhumita Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Intermediate filament proteins (IF) are cytoskeletal proteins that are primary determinants of the mechanical strength of tissues. IF proteins also modulate signaling pathways involved in cell death, survival, and growth. These proteins are expressed in a tissue specific manner and their regulation is strictly controlled in embryonic development and pathological conditions. Synemin is an IF protein that, unlike other IF proteins, is expressed in a broad range of tissues rather than in specific cell types. Synemin is expressed in all muscle types, glial cells of the retina and optic nerve, hepatic stellate cells, some mature neurons of the peripheral nervous …

Clementine Hunter's African House Murals: How Personal Memory And Fictional Narrative Interact To Create A Biographical Representation Of Plantation Life During The First Half Of The Twentieth Century In Rural Louisiana, Mary Aubrey Landrum Stafford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this thesis, I present research on Clementine Hunter's African House Murals, a set of nine panels that depict an overview of plantation life in rural Louisiana during the first half of the twentieth century. Hunter is classified as a self-taught artist of place, but is also known as a memory painter. Hunter relied on her personal memories and experiences growing up and living at Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana for inspiration throughout this monumnetal work. However, a character by the name of Francois Mignon played a large role in the final product. During the 1930s, he began re-crafting the …

The Higher-Level Phylogeny Of Cerambycidae Sensu Lato And New Insights Into The Structure Of Tufted Antennae, Stephanie Haddad Nov 2016

The Higher-Level Phylogeny Of Cerambycidae Sensu Lato And New Insights Into The Structure Of Tufted Antennae, Stephanie Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles) is a species-rich family of mostly wood-feeding beetles containing nearly 35,000 species. It belongs to the superfamily Chrysomeloidea and includes many ecologically and economically significant species. The higher-level phylogeny of Cerambycidae has never been robustly reconstructed using molecular phylogenetic data or a representative sample of higher taxa, and its internal relationships and evolutionary history remain the subjects of ongoing debate. As such, the systematics and evolution of Chrysomeloidea were reviewed herein to provide context for reconstructing the phylogeny of longhorned beetles using molecular phylogenetic data/analyses. The first higher-level molecular phylogeny of Cerambycidae was reconstructed via analysis of …

Quantitative Proteomic Investigation Of Disease Models Of Type 2 Diabetes, Mark Gabriel Athanason Nov 2016

Quantitative Proteomic Investigation Of Disease Models Of Type 2 Diabetes, Mark Gabriel Athanason

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

PANcreatic DERived factor (PANDER, FAM3B) is a member of a superfamily of FAM3 proteins that are uniquely structured and strongly expressed from the endocrine pancreas and co-secreted with insulin. Unique animal models available to our lab have indicated that PANDER can induce a selective hepatic insulin resistant (SHIR) phenotype whereby insulin signaling is blunted yet lipogenesis is increased. The complexity of the biological networks involved with this process warranted the logical approach of employing quantitative mass spectrometry based proteomic analysis using stable isotope labeling of amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) to identify the global proteome differences between the PANDER …

The Effects Of Synthetic And Dietary Therapeutics On Learning, Memory, Motor Coordination, And Seizure In An Angelman Syndrome Mouse Model, Stephanie Lynn Ciarlone Nov 2016

The Effects Of Synthetic And Dietary Therapeutics On Learning, Memory, Motor Coordination, And Seizure In An Angelman Syndrome Mouse Model, Stephanie Lynn Ciarlone

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic and neurological disorder presenting with severe developmental delay, ataxia, epilepsy, and lack of speech. AS is associated with a neuron-specific loss of function of the maternal UBE3A allele, a gene encoding an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Currently, no cure exists for this disorder; however, recent research using an AS mouse model suggests that pharmacological intervention is plausible, and can alleviate some of the detrimental phenotypes reported in AS patients.

Although there is no curative treatment for AS, seizure medication and behavioral therapies are most commonly prescribed in order to minimize symptoms. However, these options …

No Help On The Hard Problem, Derek Ball Nov 2016

No Help On The Hard Problem, Derek Ball

Animal Sentience

The hard problem of consciousness is to explain why certain physical states are conscious: why do they feel the way they do, rather than some other way or no way at all? Arthur Reber (2016) claims to solve the hard problem. But he does not: even if we grant that amoebae are conscious, we can ask why such organisms feel the way they do, and Reber’s theory provides no answer. Still, Reber’s theory may be methodologically useful: we do not yet have a satisfactory theory of consciousness, but perhaps the study of simple minds is a way to go about …
