Altering Metabolism In The Tumor Microenvironment To Enhance Anti-Tumor Immunity For Lung Cancer, Cara Schafer Jan 2016

Altering Metabolism In The Tumor Microenvironment To Enhance Anti-Tumor Immunity For Lung Cancer, Cara Schafer

All ETDs from UAB

Overcoming cancer cell immune escape represents a fundamental obstacle in the treatment of cancer. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO)-expressing myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are known to induce oxidative stress and alter amino acid metabolism within the tumor microenvironment (TME). The tryptophan (Trp)-catabolizing action of IDO not only promotes T cell tolerance and evasion but is also associated with impaired quality of life in cancer patients. We have previously demonstrated that a novel combination therapy, consisting of MDSC-depleting gemcitabine and a superoxide dismutase mimetic, prolonged survival of tumor-bearing mice by enhancing CD8+ memory T cell metabolism. We identify that combination therapy inhibits IDO …

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries Jan 2016

Sensation, Intuition, Space, And Time In Hegel’S Philosophy Of Subjective Spirit, Willem A. Devries

Faculty Publications

The subject of space, time, sensation, and intuition in Hegel is complicated, more so in Hegel than in Kant, and for good reason. Hegel rejected Kant’s Transcendental Idealism; besides the subjective reality Kant attributed to space and time, Hegel also attributed to them a truly objective reality. According to Hegel, space and time qualify finite things as they really are. Moreover, I shall argue, space and time, in Hegel’s view, have two different modes of subjective presence. We can illuminate these distinctive modes of subjective presence by comparing Hegel’s with Wilfrid Sellars’ strikingly similar arguments against Transcendental Idealism.

Staphylococcus aureus is known to cause disease in both human and animal populations. Many of the virulence factors important for S. aureus pathogenesis are found on mobile genetic elements known as S. aureus pathogenicity islands (SaPIs). SaPIs can transduce into surrounding cells, giving those cells the ability to produce virulence factors. Derepression allows SaPIs to be excised from S. aureus genome to initiate mobilization. Derepressors have been identified for multiple SaPIs, but it remains unknown if the same SaPI can be derepressed by multiple derepressors. It has been shown that SaPIbov1 can be derepressed by the type 1 dUTPase from …

Soft Robotic Grippers For Biological Sampling On Deep Reefs, Kevin C. Galloway, Kaitlyn P. Becker, Brennan Phillips, Jordan Kirby, Stephen Licht, Dan Tchernov, Robert J. Wood, David F. Gruber Jan 2016

Soft Robotic Grippers For Biological Sampling On Deep Reefs, Kevin C. Galloway, Kaitlyn P. Becker, Brennan Phillips, Jordan Kirby, Stephen Licht, Dan Tchernov, Robert J. Wood, David F. Gruber

Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications

This article presents the development of an underwater gripper that utilizes soft robotics technology to delicately manipulate and sample fragile species on the deep reef. Existing solutions for deep sea robotic manipulation have historically been driven by the oil industry, resulting in destructive interactions with undersea life. Soft material robotics relies on compliant materials that are inherently impedance matched to natural environments and to soft or fragile organisms. We demonstrate design principles for soft robot end effectors, bench-top characterization of their grasping performance, and conclude by describing in situ testing at mesophotic depths. The result is the first use of …

Sequential Release Of Nanoparticle Payloads From Ultrasonically Burstable Capsules, Stephen Kennedy, Jennifer Hu, Cathal Kearney, Hadas Skaat, Luo Gu, Marco Gentili, Herman Vandenburgh, David Mooney

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

In many biomedical contexts ranging from chemotherapy to tissue engineering, it is beneficial to sequentially present bioactive payloads. Explicit control over the timing and dose of these presentations is highly desirable. Here, we present a capsule-based delivery system capable of rapidly releasing multiple payloads in response to ultrasonic signals. In vitro, these alginate capsules exhibited excellent payload retention for up to 1 week when unstimulated and delivered their entire payloads when ultrasonically stimulated for 10–100 s. Shorter exposures (10 s) were required to trigger delivery from capsules embedded in hydrogels placed in a tissue model and did not result in …

The experiment was performed on five groups of PIC x Penarlan P76 crossbred piglets fed with the following diets: standard diet (control group) and standard diet supplemented with 1% (group I), 2% (group II), and 3% (group III) of water extract of chicory root inulin-type fructans. The animals from the group IV were fed with standard diet supplemented with 4% dried chicory roots. To analyze immunolocalization and expression of AQP2 …

The Place Of The Dog In The Family: A Comparative Case Study Of Dog Adoption, Angela Cora Garcia Jan 2016

The Place Of The Dog In The Family: A Comparative Case Study Of Dog Adoption, Angela Cora Garcia

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper explores how perspectives on the appropriate place of the dog in the family shape the practice and experience of dog adoption. This research is based on a comparative case study of a traditional shelter and an independent animal rescue organization. The data were collected through participant observation and interviews with directors and volunteers at these organizations, and with people who adopted dogs through shelter or independent animal rescue organizations. The independent rescue organizations tended to use “dog-centric” discourse to describe the relationship between the dog and its prospective family, while the traditional animal shelter and some adoptive families …

Metapopulation Viability Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois: Potential Impacts Of Habitat Change, Christopher D. Robinson, Joanne C. Crawford, Lyann Corcoran, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen Jan 2016

Metapopulation Viability Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois: Potential Impacts Of Habitat Change, Christopher D. Robinson, Joanne C. Crawford, Lyann Corcoran, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

Swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) in southern Illinois exist as a metapopulation due to fragmentation of the bottomland hardwood forests in which they live. This fragmentation makes their persistence in Illinois uncertain. We used population viability analysis (PVA) to estimate the probability of persistence of the swamp rabbit metapopulation in Illinois, using a habitat suitability map we created and life history parameters drawn from the literature. We varied the parameters used in our PVA from 50% to 150% of the initial value to compare their effects on extinction risk and to direct future management and research. We tested the …

Differences In Memory Functioning Between Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And/Or Focal Epilepsy., Sylvia E Lee, Michelle Y Kibby, Morris J Cohen, Lisa Stanford, Yong Park, Suzanne Strickland

Publications

Prior research has shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy are frequently comorbid and that both disorders are associated with various attention and memory problems. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted comparing the two disorders in one sample to determine unique versus shared deficits. Hence, we investigated differences in working memory (WM) and short-term and delayed recall between children with ADHD, focal epilepsy of mixed foci, comorbid ADHD/epilepsy and controls. Participants were compared on the Core subtests and the Picture Locations subtest of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS). Results indicated that children with ADHD displayed intact verbal WM and long-term …

Enhanced Cognition And Hypoglutamatergic Signaling In A Growth Hormone Receptor Knockout Mouse Model Of Successful Aging., Kevin N Hascup, Mary K Lynn, Patrick J Fitzgerald, Shari Randall, John J Kopchick, Heather A Boger, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R Hascup

Articles

Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHR-KO) mice are long lived with improved health span, making this an excellent model system for understanding biochemical mechanisms important to cognitive reserve. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate differences in cognition and glutamatergic dynamics between aged (20- to 24-month-old) GHR-KO and littermate controls. Glutamate plays a critical role in hippocampal learning and memory and is implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Spatial learning and memory were assessed using the Morris water maze (MWM), whereas independent dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, and CA1 basal glutamate, release, and uptake measurements were conducted in …

Soluble Amyloid-Β42 Stimulates Glutamate Release Through Activation Of The Α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor., Kevin N Hascup, Erin R Hascup

Articles

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and hippocampal atrophy. Soluble amyloid-β (Aβ)42 and plaque accumulation is implicated as the neurotoxic species in this disorder; however, at physiological concentrations (pM-nM), Aβ42 contributes to neurogenesis, long-term potentiation, and neuromodulation. Because Aβ42 binds the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) located presynaptically on glutamatergic terminals, involved with hippocampal dependent learning and memory, we examined the effects of the human, monomeric isoform of Aβ42 on glutamate release in the dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, and CA1, of isoflurane anesthetized, 6-9 month old male C57BL/6J mice. We utilized an enzyme-based …

Judging The Limits Of Cooperative Federalism, Eric M. Adams Jan 2016

Judging The Limits Of Cooperative Federalism, Eric M. Adams

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

I have often wondered whether the history of Canadian constitutional law might best be taught by traversing a footbridge of metaphors. In the “Two Row Wampum” of treaty relations, the “compact” of Confederation, the “watertight compartments” and “balance” of the division of powers, the “living tree” of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the “architecture” of our parliamentary structures, Canada’s Constitution has found expression in constructs of the imagination as much as commands of the text. Discerning meaning from abstract constitutional provisions invariably requires a turn to external principles and ideas to guide interpretation and to shape a …

Structural Cooperative Federalism, Kate Glover Jan 2016

Structural Cooperative Federalism, Kate Glover

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This article considers the status of cooperative federalism as a legal principle in Canadian constitutionalism. It argues that our understanding of cooperative federalism – often called the “modern form” of federalism in Canada – is enriched by looking to constitutional contexts beyond the division of powers. This article focuses on just one of those contexts, that is, it explores the lessons to be learned about cooperative federalism from the text and structure of Part V of the Constitution Act, 1982.

Carter V. Canada (Attorney General), The Constitutional Attack On Canada’S Ban On Assisted Dying: Missing An Obvious Chance To Rule On The Charter’S Disability Equality Guarantee, David Lepofsky Jan 2016

Carter V. Canada (Attorney General), The Constitutional Attack On Canada’S Ban On Assisted Dying: Missing An Obvious Chance To Rule On The Charter’S Disability Equality Guarantee, David Lepofsky

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Is it important only to legal scholars that the Supreme Court decided Carter v. Canada (Attorney General), — the landmark, assisted dying case — under the wrong Charter provision? In this case, when the Court struck down the Criminal Code provision that makes it a crime to assist another person to end their life (section 241(b)), it found an unjustified violation of Charter section 7. This provision guarantees that no one will be “deprived” of their “life, liberty or security of the person”, except “in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” The Court did not consider whether the impugned …

Anthropocene Anthropology: Reconceptualizing Contemporary Global Change, Amelia Moore Jan 2016

Anthropocene Anthropology: Reconceptualizing Contemporary Global Change, Amelia Moore

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

The Anthropocene is the scientific label given by earth scientists to the current epoch of unprecedented anthropogenic planetary change. The Anthropocene is also a political label designed to call attention to this change and evolving notions of agency and responsibility in contemporary life. This article critically explores what I call ‘the Anthropocene idea’ and the condition of ‘Anthropocene spaces’ through selected anthropological writing about recent planetary change and through analysis of current events in a specific ‘vulnerable’ location. By considering recent events in The Bahamas, I arrive at an orientation that I call simply Anthropocene anthropology. Rather than advocating for …

Impact Of German Sources Of Capital On The Namibian Economy, Vladimir Chlouba Jan 2016

Impact Of German Sources Of Capital On The Namibian Economy, Vladimir Chlouba

Economics Honors Papers

This work examines the impact of German sources of capital on the Namibian economy. Two sets of equations are tested. The first set tests the effect that German development assistance and German capital goods have had on domestic GDP. The second set tests the effect of German development assistance on the Namibian government’s capital formation outlays. The German independent variables are subsequently compared to global sources of capital in order to determine whether the German sources demonstrate a comparatively higher significance. Furthermore, the effects of official development assistance are disaggregated by type to test for aid’s fungibility. This analysis enables …

Beasts, Brides, And Brutality: The Intersection Of Animalism And Gender In European Fairy Tales, Rachel Matson Jan 2016

Beasts, Brides, And Brutality: The Intersection Of Animalism And Gender In European Fairy Tales, Rachel Matson

English Honors Papers

This thesis, a comparative study of published fairy tale collections across three nations and three centuries, argues that fairy tales were, in their time, highly charged ideological interventions in period debates about gender, class, and nation. In this thesis I recover not just the historical context of each collection but also the circumstances of production for their print publication. The variables that form the basis of this comparison include: whether stories in a given volume were collected from informants or invented by a single author; the level of attachment of the collector to nationalist movements; and the layers of editorial …

Appendix A – A Brief Introduction To The Religious Faiths And Spiritual Beliefs Included In The Primary Religious Education Program, Ken Badley, Dana Antayá-Moore, Amy Kostelyk

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Religions and spiritual beliefs answer the profound questions we ask ourselves: What is the meaning and purpose of my life? Who am I? What is right and wrong behaviour? Of course, in a resource like My Place in the World and in this Teacher’s Resource Guide, we can barely scratch the surface of the beliefs, traditions, and practices of the faiths and spiritual beliefs discussed. Nevertheless, in this part of the Teacher’s Resource Guide, we provide information about each of the faiths included in the student resource. We present the information in chronological order of the appearance of each major …

Tip Enhanced Laser Ablation Sample Transfer For Mass Spectrometry, Kermit K. Murray, Suman Ghorai, Chinthaka A. Seneviratne

Faculty Publications

© 2015 Materials Research Society. Mass spectrometry is one of the primary analysis techniques for biological analysis but there are technological barriers in sampling scale that must be overcome for it to be used to its full potential on the size scale of single cells. Current mass spectrometry imaging methods are limited in spatial resolution when analyzing large biomolecules. The goal of this project is to use atomic force microscope (AFM) tip enhanced laser ablation to remove material from cells and tissue and capture it for subsequent mass spectrometry analysis. The laser ablation sample transfer system uses an AFM stage …

Comparison Of Electrophysiological Auditory Measures In Fishes, Karen P. Maruska, Joseph A. Sisneros Jan 2016

Comparison Of Electrophysiological Auditory Measures In Fishes, Karen P. Maruska, Joseph A. Sisneros

Faculty Publications

© Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016. Sounds provide fishes with important information used to mediate behaviors such as predator avoidance, prey detection, and social communication. How we measure auditory capabilities in fishes, therefore, has crucial implications for interpreting how individual species use acoustic information in their natural habitat. Recent analyses have highlighted differences between behavioral and electrophysiologically determined hearing thresholds, but less is known about how physiological measures at different auditory processing levels compare within a single species. Here we provide one of the first comparisons of auditory threshold curves determined by different recording methods in a single fish species, …

Coloration In The Polymorphic Frog Oophaga Pumilio Associates With Level Of Aggressiveness In Intraspecific And Interspecific Behavioral Interactions, Sandra P. Galeano, Kyle E. Harms

Faculty Publications

© 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. Intraspecific morphological variation may correspond to behavioral variation that helps determine the nature of species interactions. Color variation among populations of variably toxic organisms has been shown to associate with alternative anti-predator behaviors. However, the effects of these alternative behavioral tendencies on the outcomes of interspecific interactions other than predator–prey remain largely unexplored. We investigated how coloration and body size variation in Oophaga pumilio, one of the most phenotypically diverse amphibians known, associated with territorial aggressiveness and how this association influenced the outcome of agonistic male–male interactions with conspecifics and heterospecifics of two sympatric species …
