Zulkifly, Kamarul A. Khalid

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Hydroxyapatite (HA) has osteoconductive properties and is widely used as a bone graft substitute. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous product with osteoinductive effects. Hypothetically, a combination of both would augment the bone formation effect of HA and widen its application in spinal fusion surgeries. This study aimed to compare new bone formation with HA granules alone and in combination with PRP versus an autologous bone graft during a lumbar intertransverse process spinal fusion. Methods: A total of 16 adult New Zealand white rabbits underwent single-level bilateral intertransverse process fusion at the L5–L6 vertebrae. One side of the spine …

Alarm Fatigue In The Ward, J Edworthy, M Kristensen, E Ozcan Nov 2016

Alarm Fatigue In The Ward, J Edworthy, M Kristensen, E Ozcan

School of Psychology

This article addresses the need of including acoustical perspectives in the debate on alarm fatigue within the healthcare domain. We show how conceptualisations and proposed solutions to alarm fatigue are unequally distributed across what could be called the ‘alarm chain’: a generic model of the core structural elements and dynamic relations that constitute any alarm scenario. A focal point in the alarm chain – the ‘alarm mediation cleft’ – seems to divide the alarm fatigue literature from the segment of the alarm literature that deals with auditory alarm design. The current healthcare discourse on alarm fatigue is centred around the …

Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

I had moved to Atlanta the age of 21 in 2003 with my aunt. Though I was 21 physically, emotionally I behaved at the level of a 14-year-old. I also lacked basic social skills and maturity. While others around me often pointed it out, I could not understand what they were talking about. So my aunt often role played by showing me how I would act. That got me interested in wanting to improve my social skills.

Meanwhile I had attending various programs at the Emory Autism Center where Toni Thomas and Dr, Lauren Castriota taught the difference between what …

Recreational Harvest And Incident-Response Protocols Reduce Human-Carnivore Conflicts In An Anthropogenic Landscape, Jarod D. Raithel, Melissa J. Reynolds-Hogland, David N. Koons, Patrick C. Carr, Lise M. Aubry

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Conserving viable large carnivore populations requires managing their interactions with humans in increasingly anthropogenic landscapes. Faced with declining budgets and escalating wildlife conflicts, agencies in North America continue to grapple with uncertainty surrounding the efficacy of socially divisive management actions such as harvest to reduce conflict. We used multistate capture–reencounter methods to estimate cause-specific mortality for a large sample (>3500) of American black bears Ursus americanus in north-western New Jersey, USA over a 33-year period. Specifically, we focused on factors that might influence the probability of bears being harvested, lethally managed, or dying from other causes. We further analysed …

Effect Of The Butyrate Prodrug Pivaloyloxymethyl Butyrate (An9) On A Mouse Model For Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Jonathan D. Edwards, Matthew E.R. Butchbach

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an early-onset motor neuron disease that leads to loss of muscle function. Butyrate (BA)-based compounds markedly improve the survival and motor phenotype of SMA mice. In this study, we examine the protective effects of the BA prodrug pivaloyloxymethyl butyrate (AN9) on the survival of SMNΔ7 SMA mice. Oral administration of AN9 beginning at PND04 almost doubled the average lifespan of SMNΔ7 SMA mice. AN9 treatment also increased the growth rate of SMNΔ7 SMA mice when compared to vehicle-treated SMNΔ7 SMA mice. In conclusion, BA prodrugs like AN9 have ameliorative effects on SMNΔ7 SMA mice.

Animating And Exploring Phylogenies With Fibre Plots, William D. Pearse Nov 2016

Animating And Exploring Phylogenies With Fibre Plots, William D. Pearse

Biology Faculty Publications

Despite the progress that has been made in many other aspects of data visualisation, phylogenies are still represented in much the same way as they first were by Darwin. In this brief essay, I give a short review of what I consider to be some recent major advances, and outline a new kind of phylogenetic visualisation. This new graphic, the fibre plot, uses the metaphor of sections through a tree to describe change in a phylogeny. I suggest it is a useful tool in gaining an rapid overview of the timing and scale of diversification in large phylogenies.

The Role Of The Egf Receptor And Its Ligands In Differentiation And 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Toxicity, Christina M. Campion Nov 2016

The Role Of The Egf Receptor And Its Ligands In Differentiation And 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Toxicity, Christina M. Campion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a highly lipophilic polyaromatic hydrocarbon and a persistent environmental contaminant. In the human epidermis, TCDD causes enhanced proliferation and altered, accelerated differentiation. However, epidermal differentiation, mediated by calcium (Ca), opposes and attenuates proliferative signaling, driven by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Using a monolayer cell culture model, confluent NHEKs were treated with high Ca (1.8 mM) or TCDD (10 nM). EGFR down-regulation, signaling, and proliferation were then examined to assess the proliferative capacity of differentiating skin versus pathophysiological, TCDD-mediated differentiation. We found that while Ca and TCDD caused marked (~50% and ~30%) loss of [125I]-EGF binding, …

Insect Consciousness: Commitments, Conflicts And Consequences, Colin Klein, Andrew B. Barron

Animal Sentience

Our target article, “Insects have the capacity for subjective experience,” has provoked a diverse range of commentaries. In this response we have collated what we see as the major themes of the discussion. It is clear that we differ from some commentators in our commitments to what subjective experience is and what the midbrain is capable of. Here we clarify where we stand on those points and how our view differs from some other influential perspectives. The commentaries have highlighted the most lively areas of disagreement. We revisit here the debates surrounding whether the cortex is essential for any form …

Do We Need Demographic Data To Forecast Plant Population Dynamics?, Andrew T. Tredennick Nov 2016

Do We Need Demographic Data To Forecast Plant Population Dynamics?, Andrew T. Tredennick

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

  1. Rapid environmental change has generated growing interest in forecasts of future population trajectories. Traditional population models built with detailed demographic observations from one study site can address the impacts of environmental change at particular locations, but are difficult to scale up to the landscape and regional scales relevant to management decisions. An alternative is to build models using population-level data that are much easier to collect over broad spatial scales than individual-level data. However, it is unknown whether models built using population-level data adequately capture the effects of density-dependence and environmental forcing that are necessary to generate skillful forecasts.
  2. Here, …

The Delta And Yoknapatawpha: The Layering Of Geography And Myth In The Works Of William Faulkner, Phillip Gordon Nov 2016

The Delta And Yoknapatawpha: The Layering Of Geography And Myth In The Works Of William Faulkner, Phillip Gordon

Study the South

William Faulkner, that great voice who raised what he called his “postage stamp of native soil” to the heights of mythic significance, only rarely wrote about the most mythic space in his native state of Mississippi, the Delta. Born in New Albany, a town in the heart of the hill country, and raised in Oxford, his life resided mostly east of the great line of bluffs that stand sentinel over the low bottomland of the Delta.
