The Relationship Between New Nurses Who Volunteer And The Caring Behavior New Nurses Exhibit In The Practice Setting, One Year Post Graduation, Nicolette Fiore-Lopez

Theses & Dissertations

Volunteering is engaged in by millions world-wide and nurses comprise a significant portion of those who provide their professional talents, unpaid, to the underserved in local, national and international efforts. Nurses who have engaged in volunteer activities anecdotally describe personally transforming experiences gained through their efforts and for many nurses volunteering becomes part of their professional mandate. Although many social disciplines have studied volunteering, to date there has been a paucity of research on nurses who volunteer. The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of novice nurses who volunteer and determine the influence of volunteering and associated …

Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo Dec 2015

Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This paper begins from one of the most commonly found questions in phenomenology, “What is Phenomenlogy?”, to argue that phenomenology is a trans-disciplinary approach to engaging with the products of human culture. This approach is characterized by paying particular attention to the distinction between facticity and transcendence within “lived experience” so as to help us better articulate and evaluate the promises that animate every human institution. Such a task necessarily requires inter-disciplinary input and helps us engage in our lives—in our shared cultural life—differently.

Career Success Of Underrepresented Minority Groups, Lavonne D. Slaton Dec 2015

Career Success Of Underrepresented Minority Groups, Lavonne D. Slaton

Student Scholarship

This study examines how individual experiences influence career success. In contrast with previous researchers' definitions of career success, this research is intended to focus on a broader range of subjective career success criteria by focusing on individual experiences and the fact that career success means whatever the individual under consideration defines it as. A rigorous qualitative study based on surveys and interviews with 38 individuals including underrepresented minorities was used to explore their definition of career success, their education, transition into the workforce, diversity, workforce experience, and what fostered or hindered their career success. The research revealed five characteristics common …

A Regional Approach To Analysis Of Food Security Framework And Policies Of The Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas), Hannah Elizabeth Shear

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food security is always a concern for consumers, but especially for those in West Africa, where the population of food insecure people has continued to grow over the past decade despite attempts by initiatives such as the World Food Program and the establishment of Millennium Development Goals. The people of West Africa are subject to repetitive natural disasters and are often in political upheaval. Many economic policies have been established to mitigate the impact that production disasters have on the consumers; one of these policies is the utilization of regional food reserves.

In 2010, the Economic Community of West African …

Analysis Of Ac/Ds Activation Tagged Mutants In Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum), Ipeleng Randome

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a crop of immense economic and nutritional importance worldwide and also a good model organism for genomic studies of other dicot species. The recent completion of the tomato genome sequence is a great milestone towards learning about the tomato genome. Elucidation of the function of the different genes using different functional genomic tools is therefore important in adding to this resource. To this end, we have developed an Ac-Ds transposon ‘activation tagging’ (ATag) system to be able to transpose transposon inserts, bearing a strong 35S-enhancer element, all around the genome. An Ac-Ds ATag construct was used …

Disaggregating The Effect Of Drought And Heat Stress During Flowering On Spikelet Fertility In Rice, Lisa Straussberger Dec 2015

Disaggregating The Effect Of Drought And Heat Stress During Flowering On Spikelet Fertility In Rice, Lisa Straussberger

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Due to rice’s wide geographic distribution, extending from 50°N to 35°S, rice is

forecasted to be the most vulnerable crop to warming global climates. Previous studies have

predicted lower rice yields and increasing rice yield variability due to higher frequencies of heat

stress events, and a higher variability in precipitation patterns due to global warming. As such,

understanding the effects of drought and heat stress intensity and frequency on rice yields is of

upmost importance to feeding the growing global population.

Given that drought and high-temperature stress often occur together, it is essential to

disaggregate the two individual stressors and …

Comparison Robustness Of Automatic Voltage Regulator For Synchronous Generator Using Neural Network And Neuro - Fuzzy Controllers, Abdulrahim Thiab, Yasir Thaier Haider Dec 2015

Comparison Robustness Of Automatic Voltage Regulator For Synchronous Generator Using Neural Network And Neuro - Fuzzy Controllers, Abdulrahim Thiab, Yasir Thaier Haider

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Neuro - Fuzzy controllers can be used as intelligent controllers to control non-linear dynamic systems through learning, which can easily accommodate the non-linearity’s, time dependencies, model uncertainty and external disturbances. Modern power systems are complex and non-linear and their operating conditions can vary over a wide range. The Nonlinear Auto-Regressive Moving Average (NARMA-L2) model system is proposed as an effective neural networks controller model to achieve the desired robust Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) for Synchronous Generator (SG) to maintain constant terminal Voltage. The essential part of Neuro-Fuzzy comes from a common framework called adaptive networks, …

Intelligent Neural Network With Greedy Alignment For Job-Shop Scheduling, Fatin I., Safanah M. Raafat

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Job-Shop Scheduling (JSS) processes have highly complex structure in terms of many criteria. Because there is no limitation in the number of the process and there are many alternative scheduling. In JSS, each order that is processed on different machines has its own process and process order. It is very important to put these processes into a sequence according to a certain order. In addition, some constraints must be considered in order to obtain the appropriate tables. In this paper, a 3-layers Feed Forward Backpropagation Neural Network (FFBNN) has been used for two different purposes, the first one task is …

Thermocouples Data Linearization Using Neural Network, Karam M. Z. Dec 2015

Thermocouples Data Linearization Using Neural Network, Karam M. Z.

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Thermocouples are usually used for measuring temperatures in steel industry, gas turbine, diesel engine and many industrial processes. Thermocouple usually have nonlinear Temperature-Voltage relationship (mV=f(T˚)). However, on the monitoring side, it is required to have the inverse relationship [T˚=f-1(mV)] to determined the actual temperature sensed by the thermocouple. In this work the neural network is fully utilized to represent the required inverse nonlinear relationship of different and most popular thermocouples (K, J, B) Types. Levenberg Marquardt is used as learning process to find these neural networks. It is found that each type of thermocouples under test can be represented by …
