The Dove® Campaign For Real Beauty: What’S Next For Inclusivity?, Kelly Indermill
Journalism
This study analyzes the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, examining the brand’s overall implementation of the campaign, as well as its successes and failures. More than ten years after the launch of Dove’s first campaign, the advertising world has greatly evolved. In an ever-changing media world, Dove took the first step towards an attempt at an all-inclusive advertising campaign. This study examines the degree to which Dove’s innovative campaign set the bar for future advertisements. It demonstrates the importance of corporate social responsibility, brand management, inclusivity and the two-way symmetrical communication model.
Developing Lockdown Policies, Charles J. Russo
Developing Lockdown Policies, Charles J. Russo
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Hardly a week passes without reading or hearing about a school being locked down because of concerns for the safety of students, teachers, and staff. The increasing number of events that prompt lockdowns presents a sad commentary about today’s world. Aware of the very real possibility of threats of violence on campus, district leaders must ensure that they have current policies that cover the safety and risk management issues associated with imposed lockdowns.
The Protection Of Privacy In On-Demand Audiovisual Media Services, Katarzyna Chałubińska-Jentkiewicz
The Protection Of Privacy In On-Demand Audiovisual Media Services, Katarzyna Chałubińska-Jentkiewicz
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
The Internet allows the provision of on-demand audiovisual media services to an extent which was not possible in the past due to technological limitations. Such varied services are subject to different legal regimes. The basis for these differences can be found in taking responsibility for the content of such services. The medium used to transmit the content cannot be the sole decisive criterion for assessing whether liability associated with the provision of a given type of service is within media law, or if it is excluded from it. The article considers regulatory differences with respect to on-demand services with regard …
The Nursing Documentation Dilemma In Uganda: Neglected But Necessary. A Case Study At Mulago National Referral Hospital, Grace Nakate, Diane Dahl, Pammla Petrucka, Karen B. Drake, Ruby Dunlap
The Nursing Documentation Dilemma In Uganda: Neglected But Necessary. A Case Study At Mulago National Referral Hospital, Grace Nakate, Diane Dahl, Pammla Petrucka, Karen B. Drake, Ruby Dunlap
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
In Uganda, nursing documentation still remains a challenge, in most of the government hospitals and some private hospitals, it remains at a manual (non-technology driven) level and omissions have been observed. Nurses continue to capture standard elements in their documentation. A mixed methods intervention study was conducted to determine knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards documentation, including an evaluation of nurses’ response to a designed nursing documentation form. Forty participants were selected through convenience sampling from six wards of a Ugandan health institution. The study intervention involved teaching nurses the importance of documentation and using of the trial documentation tool. …

While Docent Americana ostensibly travels home to help his friend, he is also trying to cope with challenges in his own life. He suffers from bipolar disorder and although he is receiving treatment for it the stresses of the experience trigger a manic episode that threatens his personal stability and his relationships with those around him. An Unnamed God is set in western Kentucky, affording a glimpse at the slow decay of rural communities as …
Corporate History And Curatorial Practice At Buffalo Trace Distillery., Stephanie Rose Schmidt
Corporate History And Curatorial Practice At Buffalo Trace Distillery., Stephanie Rose Schmidt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work seeks to explore curatorial integrity in public museums and corporate history institutions by discussing historic preservation and display at The Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY. The history of curatorial narrative in public museums begins with elitist displays of state treasures in 16th century Europe and develops over centuries into publicly held, education based institutions. Emerging in the form of factory tours during the Industrial Revolution, many corporations today have moved beyond basic advertising and toward meaningful positioning of their company, not only in the market place, but also within community and national identities. A National Historic …

Mechanisms And Intervention Strategies For Alcohol And Hiv-Antiretroviral Therapy-Induced Liver Injury., Hridgandh Donde
Mechanisms And Intervention Strategies For Alcohol And Hiv-Antiretroviral Therapy-Induced Liver Injury., Hridgandh Donde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic alcohol consumption is a leading cause of liver disease and liver-related death worldwide. Alcoholic liver disease includes, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis and ultimately fibrosis and cirrhosis. Emerging evidence has established the important role of the “gut-liver” axis in the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Our recent work indicated that chronic alcohol induced perturbations in the gut microbiome and consequent changes in fatty acids have a major impact on the development of intestinal barrier dysfunction and ALD. The aim of this study was to investigate whether treatment with tributyrin - a butyrate prodrug results in protection against ALD in terms …
Atmospheric Nitrogen Assimilation In Ustilago Maydis., Michael Cooper
Atmospheric Nitrogen Assimilation In Ustilago Maydis., Michael Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for all living creatures. Ammonium is one of the most efficiently used and thus preferred, sources of nitrogen. As with other dimorphic fungi, yeast-like cells of Ustilago maydis, a fungal pathogen of maize, switches to filamentous growth when starved for nitrogen/ammonium. U. maydis carries two genes, ump1 and ump2, encoding ammonium transporters that facilitate both uptake of ammonium and the filamentous response to its absence. While no obvious phenotype is observed when ump1 is deleted, cells without ump2 are unable to filament in response to low ammonium, although they can still grow. Surprisingly, …
Places In The Polity Of Rhetoric : Topoi, Evolution, And The Fragmentation Of Discourse., Benjamin James Bickel Wetherbee
Places In The Polity Of Rhetoric : Topoi, Evolution, And The Fragmentation Of Discourse., Benjamin James Bickel Wetherbee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation integrates classical rhetoric with postmodern understandings of textual fragmentation. “Places in the Polity of Rhetoric” follows two mutually constitutive avenues of inquiry, one of which stresses the importance of understanding textual fragments as rhetorical topoi—that is, as generative “places” that allow writers and speakers to economically evoke larger fields of cultural meaning in the space of a single word, phrase, or image. The other stresses the evolution of rhetorical culture that emerges through the interaction between human agents, who use these topoi for rhetorical ends, and discursive agents (topoi themselves) who use human rhetors to propagate …

"If We Don't Talk About It, They'll Never Go Away" : An Examination Of The Experiences Of And Reactions To Stigma By A Diverse Population Of Adoptive Parents In The United States., Jessica Rae Newton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adoption challenges the traditional Western notions of kinship and family formation. Because of this, adoption has become a stigmatized status in American culture. Utilizing a grounded theoretical approach, this study examines the experiences of stigma by adoptive parents in the United States and the ways adoptive parents react to and manage this stigmatization. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of 17 adoptive parents living across the country. It was found that adoptive parents experienced stigma through comments made during their interactions with others, which fell into four categories: hesitation toward the birth parents, suspicion of the costs, assumptions …
Genomic And Transcriptomic Analyses Of Microbotryum Lychnidis-Dioicae Provide Insights Into The Biology Of A Fascinating Fungal Phytopathogen., Su San Toh

This study made use of the Silene latifolia/Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae phytopathogen system as the focal system to establish the first reference genome for Microbotryum violaceum sensu lato. In silico analysis was performed on the genome assembly to identify various characteristics of the genome. Using RNA-Sequencing technologies on the Illumina platform, we collected transcriptomic data for both in vitro and in planta life stages of the fungus, providing the most comprehensive look at the gene expression and regulation of this fungus. Due to a lack of identifiable domains on the predicted genes, gene set enrichment analysis was done in …
The Ras Effector Nore1a Forms A Tumor Suppressor Complex With Brca1., Nicholas C Nelson
The Ras Effector Nore1a Forms A Tumor Suppressor Complex With Brca1., Nicholas C Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ras proteins function as molecular signaling switches that can stimulate multiple mitogenic pathways in response to extracellular signaling. Oncogenic activation of Ras by structural mutation is a highly transforming event in ~1/3 of human cancers. However, aberrant Ras activation can also promote oncogene-induced senescence. This Ras-induced irreversible growth arrest is a physiological process that acts as a barrier to malignancy. The mechanisms by which Ras drives senescence and how this process is bypassed during Ras-driven transformation remains poorly understood.
Although mutations in the RAS gene are extremely rare in human breast cancer, the Ras signaling pathway is constitutively activated in …

Network Neutrality And Consumer Demand For “Better Than Best Efforts” Traffic Management, Rob Frieden
Network Neutrality And Consumer Demand For “Better Than Best Efforts” Traffic Management, Rob Frieden
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
INTRODUCTION The Internet increasingly offers a preferred medium for access to video and other types of high value content that may require Internet Service Providers (“ISPs”) to use special efforts to ensure superior quality of service (“QOS”). ISPs have made substantial investments in infrastructure upgrades to satisfy growing demand for networks capable of delivering bandwidth intensive traffic at higher transmission speeds. Additionally, they work to accommodate consumer expectations of having content access anytime, anywhere, through any medium, via any device, and in any screen presentation format. Early adopters of new video delivery technologies rely on both wireline and wireless alternatives …

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
INTRODUCTION Quietly reading a book by a window in your apartment isn’t necessarily a “private” act. Many living in densely packed locations like Manhattan inevitably wonder whether eyes peering through telescopes or watching digital camera screens find them, linger for a time, capture images or generate fantasies about who and what they are. That appropriation reality popped into public view in 2013 when Martha and Matthew Foster discovered images of themselves and their children, Delaney and James, in Arne Svenson’s photography exhibition The Neighbors mounted at the Julie Saul Gallery in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The Fosters lived in …
Sensationalism Falling Through The Cracks: Why The Legal Profession Must Broaden Ethical Standards For Legal Commentators, A. Augustus Lasala
Sensationalism Falling Through The Cracks: Why The Legal Profession Must Broaden Ethical Standards For Legal Commentators, A. Augustus Lasala
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
INTRODUCTION Whether it was O.J. Simpson, Casey Anthony, or Scott Peterson, history has shown that Americans love an exciting criminal trial. As a result, in the United States, the coverage and analysis of high-publicity criminal cases is ever-growing, creating many opportunities for attorneys to work in media as legal commentators. The term “legal commentator” has no precise definition, but generally entails attorneys making statements in the media that contain legal analysis. When attorneys speak in the media they simultaneously act in two roles: as a licensed attorney who has professional responsibilities and as a journalist who must meet viewership requirements. …
Internet Privacy Enforcement After Net Neutrality, Thomas B. Norton
Internet Privacy Enforcement After Net Neutrality, Thomas B. Norton
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
In March 2015, the Federal Communications Commission reclassified broadband Internet access service providers as “common carriers” subject to obligations under Title II of the Communications Act. One such obligation is to comply with the Act’s section 222 privacy provisions. As a result of reclassification, the Federal Communications Commission claims privacy enforcement jurisdiction over a broad swath of companies that formerly fell within the Federal Trade Commission’s regulatory reach. The Federal Trade Commission and industry players have been outwardly critical of this effect. This Note explores the resulting tension between the two agencies and proposes potential resolutions for it.
Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Scaling-Specific Features Of A Gene Regulatory Network In Drosophila, Honggang Wu, Renjie Jiao, Manu, Jun Ma
Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Scaling-Specific Features Of A Gene Regulatory Network In Drosophila, Honggang Wu, Renjie Jiao, Manu, Jun Ma
Biology Faculty Publications
A widely appreciated aspect of developmental robustness is pattern formation in proportion to size. But how such scaling features emerge dynamically remains poorly understood. Here we generate a data set of the expression profiles of six gap genes in Drosophila melanogasterembryos that differ significantly in size. Expression patterns exhibit size-dependent dynamics both spatially and temporally. We uncover a dynamic emergence of under-scaling in the posterior, accompanied by reduced expression levels of gap genes near the middle of large embryos. Simulation results show that a size-dependent Bicoid gradient input can lead to reduced Krüppel expression that can have long-range and …
The Hashemite Kingdom Of Jordan And Its Role In Middle Eastern Geopolitics, Elizabeth Heckmann
The Hashemite Kingdom Of Jordan And Its Role In Middle Eastern Geopolitics, Elizabeth Heckmann
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Middle East is notorious for the seemingly endless series of conflicts, instances of internal unrest, and political insurrections it witnesses. From the Gulf Wars in the late 20th Century, to the Arab Spring that began in 2010, to the rise of the Islamic State in 2013, it appears that almost every state in the region is inescapably engulfed in violence and instability. However, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has proven itself to be the exception to that rule over the years. While Jordan is not unfamiliar with domestic conflict and political unrest, the kingdom has demonstrated a remarkable resilience …
