Transformational Leadership: Transmitting An Educational Reform Agenda In A Low Performing Urban Middle School Using Innovative Strategies, Such As Hip-Hop And High Interest Curriculum, Shango A. Blake

Education Doctoral

After 12 years since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind legislation and six years of Race to the Top national educational policy, both designed to address the educational achievement gap and improve many of America’s failing schools, the persistence of failing schools in urban communities continues to exist. This problem demands bold, innovative, even non-traditional initiatives. The research of this dissertation, called the Queens Middle School (QMS) Study, looks to determine the strategies implemented by a transformational leader at a low performing Queens, New York middle school, 10 years ago, in a manner that reveals new educational models …

Community colleges have become a major national- and state-level focal point to increase the number of credentials awarded. Academically underprepared students may not be entering community colleges to earn a credential. This quantitative study examined students enrolled in community college Educational Opportunity Programs (EOPs) in the State University of New York from the perspectives of student-defined goal completion, self-efficacy, and perceptions of the EOP. The study used secondary data available from the State University of New York’s Office of Institutional Research as well as an online survey instrument. Results of the study showed a multivariate relationship between goal completion, enrollment …

School Principal Support: A Qualitative Study Of Teachers’ Lived Experiences In Urban, Suburban, And Rural Schools, Larry C. Schmiegel Dec 2015

School Principal Support: A Qualitative Study Of Teachers’ Lived Experiences In Urban, Suburban, And Rural Schools, Larry C. Schmiegel

Education Doctoral

This study sought to understand, through their lived experiences, teachers’ perceptions of school principals’ personal support and professional support and what influence, if any, it had on the teachers’ level of commitment to their schools. Teacher consistency and proficiency contribute to an increase in student achievement; however, 50% of educators in the United States leave the profession within their first five years of employment. The literature lacks specificity with regard to teachers’ perception of support from their school principal. This study explored the following research questions: (a) How do teachers describe school principal personal support and professional support? (b) How …

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Prophet Muhammad’S Leadership Behaviors: A Model For Islamic School Principals, Asif I. Padela Dec 2015

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Prophet Muhammad’S Leadership Behaviors: A Model For Islamic School Principals, Asif I. Padela

Education Doctoral

The Muslim population in the United States is expected to double over the next two decades. As the population grows, there will be a corresponding growth in the size and number of Islamic organizations, especially Islamic schools. Islamic schools were first established in the 1930s by the Nation of Islam and were followed by the establishment of Sunni Islamic schools in the 1970s. Islamic schools, similar to traditional schools, are operated by principals. Literature on educational leadership illustrates a vital role that principals play in schools. However, there is no Islamic educational leadership model that assists the work of principals …

BACKGROUND: M-M-R(TM)II (MMRII; Merck & Co) is currently the only measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine licensed in the United States. Another licensed vaccine would reinforce MMR supply. This study assessed the immunogenicity of a candidate vaccine (Priorix(TM), GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines [MMR-RIT]) when used as a first dose among eligible children in the United States.

METHODS: In this exploratory Phase-2, multicenter, observer-blind study, 1220 healthy subjects aged 12-15 months were randomized (3:3:3:3) and received 1 dose of 1 of 3 MMR-RIT lots with differing mumps virus titers (MMR-RIT-1 [4.8 log10]; MMR-RIT-2 [4.1 log10]; MMR-RIT-3 [3.7 log10] CCID50) or MMRII co-administered with hepatitis A vaccine …

Hvdc Systems Fault Analysis Using Various Signal Processing Techniques, Benish Paily Dec 2015

Hvdc Systems Fault Analysis Using Various Signal Processing Techniques, Benish Paily

Doctoral

The detection and fast clearance of faults are important for the safe and optimal operation of HVDC systems. In HVDC systems, various types of AC faults (rectifier & inverter side) and DC faults can occur. It is therefore necessary to detect the faults and classify them for better protection and diagnostics purposes. Various techniques for fault detection and classification in HVDC systems using signal processing techniques are presented and investigated in this research work. In this research work, it is shown that the wavelet transformation can effectively detect abrupt changes in system signals which are indicative of a fault. This …

"Speak, Hannah, And Do Not Be Silent": Pseudo-Philo's Deconstruction Of Violence In Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum 50-51, Benjamin J. Lappenga Dec 2015

"Speak, Hannah, And Do Not Be Silent": Pseudo-Philo's Deconstruction Of Violence In Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum 50-51, Benjamin J. Lappenga

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This article argues that the movement from Hannah’s silent prayer in 50.5 (‘Hannah did not want to pray out loud’) to her bold declaration in 51.5 (‘I will speak my words openly’) interrupts a narrative trajectory involving violent zeal in Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum. Throughout the narrative, the prayers of key individuals for God’s merciful action on behalf of the people are rendered efficacious by acts of zeal (zelus) that are both public and violent (47.1–3). By contrast, Hannah’s act of silent prayer (framed as ‘zeal’ in 50.5) is accepted as the accompanying act for the people’s prayer (51.2). This vicarious …

The Effects Of Nutrition Pertaining To Fitness And Health, Daniel Swem Dec 2015

The Effects Of Nutrition Pertaining To Fitness And Health, Daniel Swem

University Honors College

The current research is focused on how nutrition influences both fitness and health. It is important to understand the difference between the two terms. Fitness relates to a person’s ability to perform specific tasks whereas health is a condition of being free of disease or illness. Pertaining to fitness, this study primarily focuses on cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and body composition. (The other components of physical fitness are muscular endurance and flexibility). This research will attempt to answer some highly researched questions. How important is the timing of pre-exercise and post-exercise meals? What foods are beneficial for those seeking to …

Outbreak: Emergency Room Overcrowding, Mary Elizabeth Sum

University Honors College

A phenomenon referred to as emergency room (ER) overcrowding, which is defined as, “the demand for emergency services exceeds the ability of physicians and nurses to provide quality care within a reasonable time” (Sinclair, 2007), is happening around the world today. This problem causes much grief for the patients trying to receive quality care from the affected hospitals, and therefore hospitals are looking for any solution to solve this problem. The research was conducted by a literary review by utilizing the CINAHL and the Nursing and Allied Health Collection database. It was conducted to discover any evidence of ER overcrowding, …

Human Resources’ Role In Avoiding Conflict In The Workplace, Brad Morris Dec 2015

Human Resources’ Role In Avoiding Conflict In The Workplace, Brad Morris

University Honors College

Psychologists have proven there are many causes of conflict; the vast majority of these causes can find their roots in displaced anger or a buildup of stress that leads to an unhealthy release, such as a display of hostility. Human Resource professionals are expected to find a way to limit, control, and eliminate these situations before they become a problem. Avoiding situations of work place conflict, especially violence is one of the most important duties for a corporation; these issues can be avoided by the Human Resource Department with relative ease by hiring the right people, as to ensure the …

Implementing Undercover Anti-Bullying Teams; A Restorative Intervention Program To Address Bullying Relationships In Schools, Dorry Lillard

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

Abstract

School bullying negatively impacts the lives of children, including the bullies, the victims and the bystanders. This project investigated the implementation process and perceived effectiveness of Undercover Anti-Bullying Teams. The "no blame" approach idea to healing bullying relationships originated by Bill Hubbard, was modified with a narrative perspective by Michael Williams, a counselor at a high school in Auckland, New Zealand. The purpose of this qualitative project was to gain insight from four practitioners, two in New Zealand and two in California, about their personal experiences with the implementation of this approach. The study found that Undercover Anti-Bullying Teams …

Exact Implicit Solution Of Nonlinear Heat Transfer In Rectangular Straight Fin Using Symmetry Reduction Methods, M. S. Abdel Latif, A. H. Abdel Kader, H. M. Nour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the exact implicit solution of the second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which governing heat transfer in rectangular fin is obtained using symmetry reduction methods. General relationship among the temperature at the fin tip, the temperature gradient at the fin base, the mode of heat transfer, 𝑛 and the fin parameters 𝑁 and ℰ is obtained. Some numerical examples are discussed and it is shown that the temperature of fin increases when approaching from the heat source. The relationship between the fin efficiency and the temperature of fin tip is obtained for any value of the mode …

Building Psychosocial Assets And Wellbeing Among Adolescent Girls: A Randomized Controlled Trial, K. S. Leventhal, Jane Gillham, L. M. Demaria, G. Andrew, J. W. Peabody, S. Leventhal

Psychology Faculty Works

We conducted a randomized controlled trial of a 5-month resilience-based program (Girls First Resilience Curriculum or RC) among 2308 rural adolescent girls at 57 government schools in Bihar, India. Local women with at least a 10th grade education served as group facilitators. Girls receiving RC improved more (vs. controls) on emotional resilience, self-efficacy, social-emotional assets, psychological wellbeing, and social wellbeing. Effects were not detected on depression. There was a small, statistically significant negative effect on anxiety (though not likely clinically significant). Results suggest psychosocial assets and wellbeing can be improved for girls in high-poverty, rural schools through a brief school-day …

"A System Appallingly Out Of Balance": Morgan V. State And The Rights Of Defendants And Victims In Sexual Assault Prosecutions, Daniel E. Doty

Alaska Law Review

In a series of three cases that culminate with Morgan v. State, Alaska's courts established a unique protection for defendants in sexual assault cases. This protection, which allows such defendants to attack their victims in court with previous reports of sexual assault that did not result in prosecution, is not afforded to defendants in other cases and is based on a dubious "general principle" that the credibility of sexual assault victims has "special relevance." The protection is problematic in several ways: it is grounded in erroneous stereotypes about the victims of sex crimes; it is detrimental to victims and …
