Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two synthetic aziridinomitosenes (AZMs), Me-AZM and H-AZM, structurally related to mitomycin C (MC) were evaluated for their anticancer activity against six cancer cell lines (HeLa, Jurkat, T47D, HepG2, HL-60, and HuT-78) and tested for their DNA-modifying abilities in Jurkat cells. Cytotoxicity assays showed that Me-AZM is up to 72-fold and 520-fold more potent than MC and H-AZM, respectively. Me-AZM also demonstrated increased DNA modification over MC and H-AZM in alkaline COMET and Hoechst fluorescence assays that measured crosslinks in cellular DNA. Me-AZM and H-AZM treatment of Jurkat cells was found to sponsor significant DNA-protein crosslinks using …

Method Assessment For Microalgae Quantification In Wastewater Treatment And Biofuel Production, Kristen S. Harrison

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is growing interest in the use of microalgae for wastewater treatment and biofuel production. However, there is not yet a reliable, user-friendly method of quantifying the biomass and lipid production of a large sample of algae. This study aims to establish and validate new methods for green microalgae quantification using the Microplate reader and the Coulter Counter. Chlorella vulgaris was chosen as the ‘ideal’ algal species for wastewater treatment and biofuel production due to its structure, lipid production, and pollution removal ability. Three traditional quantification methods -- microscope cell count, lipid separation, and chlorophyll extraction -- were compared to …

PHOSPHO1 is one of principal proteins involved in initiating bone matrix mineralisation. Recent studies have found that Phospho1 KO mice ( Phospho1-R74X) display multiple skeletal abnormalities with spontaneous fractures, bowed long bones, osteomalacia and scoliosis. These analyses have however been limited to young mice and it remains unclear whether the role of PHOSPHO1 is conserved in the mature murine skeleton where bone turnover is limited. In this study, we have used ex-vivo computerised tomography to examine the effect of Phospho1 deletion on tibial bone architecture in mice at a range of ages (5, 7, 16 and 34. weeks of age) …

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

In recent years, we have seen scientists attempt to model and explain human dynamics and in particular human movement. Many aspects of our complex life are affected by human movement such as disease spread and epidemics modeling, city planning, wireless network development, and disaster relief, to name a few. Given the myriad of applications, it is clear that a complete understanding of how people move in space can lead to considerable benefits to our society. In most of the recent works, scientists have focused on the idea that people movements are biased towards frequently-visited locations. According to them, human movement …

Quiet-Sun Network Bright Point Phenomena With Sigmoidal Signatures, David L. Chesney, Hakeem M. Oluşeyi, Norton Brice Orange, Patrick R. Champey

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Ubiquitous solar atmospheric coronal and transition region bright points (BPs) are compact features overlying strong concentrations of magnetic flux. Here, we utilize high-cadence observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory to provide the first observations of extreme ultraviolet quietSun (QS) network BP activity associated with sigmoidal structuring. To our knowledge, this previously unresolved fine structure has never been associated with such small-scale QS events. This QS event precedes a bi-directional jet in a compact, low-energy, and low-temperature environment, where evidence is found in support of the typical fan-spine magnetic field topology. As in active regions …

Small Business Transformation: Making Entrepreneurial Ventures Profitable, Alexis Quiterio

Senior Honors Projects

“Small Business Transformation: Making Entrepreneurial Ventures Profitable.”

The marketing model is an analytical tool that can transform an archetypal business into a prosperous one. It is through identifying opportunities within a business through segmentation, targeting and positioning that one can distinguish what market they are in, who they are targeting and where they want to position themselves within that industry. Once those elements are determined, the marketing mix, which includes product, price, place and promotion, can be analyzed and fulfilled.

This study evaluates and rebuilds an at-home fitness business, for a mother of three, examining the confluence of the business …

Aggregate Settlements And Attorney Liability: The Evolving Landscape, Lynn A. Baker Dec 2015

Aggregate Settlements And Attorney Liability: The Evolving Landscape, Lynn A. Baker

Hofstra Law Review

This Article was prepared for the Hofstra Law Review conference on "Lawyers as Targets: Suing, Prosecuting, and Defending Lawyers." Over the past several decades, attorneys involved in mass tort settlements, especially those representing the plaintiffs, have faced an increasing number of large-dollar liability claims centered on the aggregate settlement rule: that is, the state equivalents to Rule 1.8(g) of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. During this period, courts have held that fee forfeiture, potentially totaling millions of dollars, is an appropriate remedy for violations of the Rule, even in the absence of any demonstrated economic harm to the …

Lawyers On Trial: Juror Hostility To Defendants In Legal Malpractice Trials, Herbert M. Kritzer, Neil Vidmar Dec 2015

Lawyers On Trial: Juror Hostility To Defendants In Legal Malpractice Trials, Herbert M. Kritzer, Neil Vidmar

Hofstra Law Review

In contrast to medical malpractice, legal malpractice is a phenomenon that has attracted little attention from empirically-oriented scholars. This paper is part of a larger study of legal malpractice claiming and litigation. Given the evidence on the frequency of legal malpractice claims, there are surprisingly few legal malpractice cases that result in jury verdicts. There are many possible explanations for this, one of which reflects the perception that lawyers are held in such low esteem by potential jurors that they risk harsh treatment by jurors when they are defendants in legal malpractice trials. Because we could find no empirical evidence …

The Litigation Privilege: Its Place In Contemporary Jurisprudence, Louise Lark Hill Dec 2015

The Litigation Privilege: Its Place In Contemporary Jurisprudence, Louise Lark Hill

Hofstra Law Review

Historically, lawyers have been immune from civil liability for statements related to litigation which may injure or offend an opposing party during the litigation process. This protection is referred to as the “litigation privilege,” which originated in medieval English jurisprudence and continues to be recognized in the United States today. The rationale supporting the litigation privilege is that the integrity of the adversary system outweighs any monetary interest of a party injured by her adversary. Remedies other than lawsuits are available to parties who feel they have been damaged “by malicious statements or conduct during litigation.” For instance, misconduct in …

A No-Fault Remedy For Legal Malpractce?, Melissa Mortazavi Dec 2015

A No-Fault Remedy For Legal Malpractce?, Melissa Mortazavi

Hofstra Law Review

The last forty years have seen a marked rise in legal malpractice lawsuits. Recent numbers show that no abatement is in sight; instead the number of large legal malpractice claims is steadily increasing. Although lawyers have a personal interest in limiting liability, they also have a professional one in protecting clients from harm arising due to malpractice. But how can the legal profession curtail and manage malpractice liability while also providing relief to injured clients? Applying existing tort scholarship on no-fault alternative systems to professional legal services, this Article argues that no-fault may be a viable option in many common …

Interpreting Unique Colloidal Response Of Tio2 Nanomaterials To Controlled Sonication For Understanding Their Assembly Configuration, Siyang Wu Dec 2015

Interpreting Unique Colloidal Response Of Tio2 Nanomaterials To Controlled Sonication For Understanding Their Assembly Configuration, Siyang Wu

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

It is important to determine the assembly configuration of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) particularly between aggregate or agglomerate because the assembly configuration greatly influences their fate and transport behavior in the aquatic environment. Aggregated particles are more subject to segregation upon changes of environmental conditions (vice versa) than agglomerated particles. As a strategic tool for investigating the time-resolved reversible segregating and assembling behavior of ENMs and thus estimating their assembly configuration, controlled sonication process was proposed. It was hypothesized the unique colloidal response of ENMs to sonication, with respect to changes in size, might be their intrinsic property associated with assembly …

Regional Stratigraphy Of The Marble Falls Formation And Underlying Late Mississippian To Early Pennsylvanian Deposits, Fort Worth Basin, North-Central Texas, Usa, Beau Daniel Berend

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The Early Pennsylvanian Marble Falls Formation in the Fort Worth Basin (FWB) of North-Central Texas was deposited in a broad carbonate ramp system during the initial stages of Ouachita orogenesis. It extends across an area of more than 15,000 square miles and comprises an assortment of facies that vary considerably across the region due to high-frequency sea-level fluctuations. The Marble Falls has been studied extensively in outcrop around the periphery of the Llano Uplift where it was informally divided into lower and upper members separated by a regional unconformity representing the Morrowan-Atokan boundary. A sequence of the Marble Falls Formation …

Developing A System To Arrest Transformation Using A Zebrafish Model For Melanomagenesis, Cory Haluska Dec 2015

Developing A System To Arrest Transformation Using A Zebrafish Model For Melanomagenesis, Cory Haluska

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The recent emergence of RNA-guided CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system adapted from the natural defense mechanism found in bacteria and archaea has made the manipulation of genetic loci more feasible than ever. Using this technique we attempted to eliminate a target sequence of about 20 nucleotides from the promoter of the protein ICER (Inducible cAMP Early Repressor) located just upstream of the start sequence. ICER is a small transcription factor and supposed tumor suppressor protein that comes from the CREM (cAMP Responsive Element) gene. ICER has been found to be absent in tumor cells, marked for degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasomal pathway. …
